Experience will be different for some. I was told I'd be building my book of business and the clients are mine. I can work a lot or a little. The truth is that the commissions are yours (IF they pay them in full or even at all) but the clients don't go with you if you leave. They have a time match system. If you work for a year, and quit, you get your small renewal risiduals for a year, 4 years matched for 4 years. After 5 years you're permanently vested. But how many people do you know who keep the same insurance for 5 years, or even 3? Especially with a new agent constantly trying to sell them a new policy to get a higher commission after you leave? It's also really working on the honor policy. They don't have the best track record for paying commissions, even as an active agent.  
Communication is a disaster. They're behind the 8 ball pretty consistently when it comes to answering questions. Your leader's leader won't want to answer your questions, so if your leader doesn't know and won't try to help you get help, you're out of luck.  Your very simple, basic cookie cutter website, won't be available when they claim it will be.  You'll have to chase.  Consistently problems accessing things online (internal, carrier,  etc), which will cost you time to get fixed.  Many carriers don't answer your questions. They send questions out to agents like you who work with them regularly. Good luck selling a policy when you don't have all the answers your client is asking.  
Carrier appointments can take 3 days to 7 weeks and some can decline you, esp as a new agent.  Most will take about a week.  State appointments can take a few days to a couple of weeks, depending. Some carriers charge you to sell their products, but not most. Non resident agent state fees are $60-$300 annually,  on average.  
Be prepared to put in 50-70 hours a week when you're brand new for tiny/micro results, unless you have prior sales experience.   
Doing contacting (HST and carriers) can be a full time job for your first week and a half to two weeks, and learning new products and navigating individual carrier sites is a lot at first, too. 
Just be prepared to go about half a year on starvation wages (at best) unless you've got significant prior sales experience. 
You'll have to find your own leads by knocking on doors (or whatever methods you can find) and then by working them. Free leads are aged, so be prepared for at least 95% of them to not be interested, not answer you or to just be time-wasters.  Paid leads are $18-$20 with no guarantees, but lead credits are helpful if you can sell to get them.  
The training culture is positive for the most part.  Trainer was good, but the methods they teach are clearly outdated. What worked 8-15 years ago isn't as effective in the up and coming tech world.   The game has changed and you'll have to find your own ways to keep up until you have lots of referrals.  
There's a good reason 95% of new agents fall off within a few months.   
But we're going for the dream, right? Work hard up front to enjoy 20-30 hour flexible weeks later, making 6 figures.  

When you are contracting they scurry you in to complete all the contracts neccessary and to assign them as the upline and the assignee of your commissions. There is a lot of confusion and you are consistently told that you need a company like them to get a start in this business, not true. Most carriers allow agents to contract direct and you don't need a company like HST. They use this family culture idea to draw in unsuspecting new hires when in reality you are a number in the over 100,000 people they have hired since their inception in 2007. You DO NOT own your business nor your clients. When you get released they DO NOT release your clients to you. They keep them and if you are fully vested after 5 years then they will continue to pay commissions (so they say.) It is hard to trust a company when they can't seem to pay their brokers for their business. How can an anyone trust them to pay them when they are not being paid as an active agent. You might as well say goodbye to your money when you join this company. They place you with leaders who push push push short-term medical on you as the main focus. They will assist all day when you sell that but when you sell ACA and need assistance it is crickets. They keep a portion of your commissions from the already tiny amounts for ACA and for Short-term. I was able to see street commission levels and some of the policies you write they keep close to 10% of your money. There really is no support to justify the amount of money they keep from your commissions and they focus on what lines their pockets and not what is actually best for the client. They are money focused and not client focused. Towards the end of my time with them it was embarrassing to say I was with them because they are just another agency pushing junk insurance on Americans and telling them they build plans based on their needs. That is a lie because short-term is close to the same cost as some ACA plans and is not mean't to be long-term. It does not cover a range of concerns most people face and can leave them in the doghouse when big events occur. If you are recruited, run! Find somewhere local whose focus is on real insurance and build a business on honesty and integrity. I am glad I am gone and representing an agency that actually cares for their people and their clients.

I contracted with HST a little over 1 year ago and the only thing that I have been disappointed in is that I didn't contract sooner!! HST is a company that is full of good people who are consistently encouraging your success. This is a career ideal for people who are ready to invest in themselves in order to create a well balanced work and social life, strong residual income and pursue the want of being a part of a company that treats you like family! The most comforting thing I have heard in the past year is that "we love you where you are". The sales world can be a dog eat dog world but since you are your own boss everyone cheers you on when you make that first sale, when you get that second promotion in 6 months or when hit your partnership bonus (weather you hit it in 6 months or 6 years). The beauty of it is that it doesn't matter where you are on the leader board, if you are happy HST is happy too. No great success comes easy so you should expect to get out what you put in. HST does also give you access to technology that is consistently evolving in order to keep the most competitive edge on our ever changing market. This allows us brokers to help our clients stay up to date which puts a great amount of value on you and your business. I have found my best and last career and am grateful for it everyday!

There is no typical day at work. You wake up, mondays you have meetings, the rest of the week you are marketing for your business which ever way you see fit. I personally just pick up the phone and work. You create appointments and go meet your clients in person or over the phone.

I learned so much from this company about the sales industry. I created my own website, flyers, postcards and found creative ways to market yourself. You have to be resourceful, creative, money conscious and patient. You must be willing to invest time and money but the rewards are worth the time and commitment.

The hardest part of the job is to get started. You are payed 100% commission and if you don't have money in your savings it's hard to start a book of business and worry about the next pay check, although it can be a motivator to put in that extra work necessary to make a sale.

Paydays are Monday but what they don’t tell you is it is often the 2nd or 3rd Monday after a sale until you get the first half of commission.  You must be licensed and appointed in all 21 states they serve before you can even manage your own business in a state you ARE licensed in. Until fully licensed, appointed, and trained in all 21 states to underwrite and enroll, you must transfer the applicant to someone who is, to finish the enrollment, and even then they in turn must get the carrier on the phone. IOW, it’s all done manually even though these are simplified issue products.  No instant decision e-apps.

The management and training are good, and the leads are free, but dispositioning a call as Not Interested is frowned upon which results in those leads remaining in the dialer so it quickly fills up with uninterested leads that they keep calling making it difficult to make a sale.

A typical day consisted of dialing prospects and selling final expense policies,and a daily meeting to brush up your skills. Management were very good teachers, the people were great.However  I would not advise working for this company, paying 275 a month for leads that were often beat up or aged with very low compensation made making any substantial amount of money difficult. Guaranteed issue paid very little, and with losses from covid one company capped our commissions. I left which gave me a great sense of relief. I would advise working in peoples homes and buying your own leads,that way the leads are yours and your not dialing through the same leads other agents have called. Another drawback was having to pay for your license in 21 states which for me exceeded 1800 dollars. Look elsewhere, especially if you are experienced.

The company allows you to have an agency with agents under you, without the hassle of starting and running an agency.  I love that!!!  However, managers are so busy recruiting around the country that they are hiring people in states they do not live in and will not visit for training.  Make sure you only join a team if your manager lives within 1-2 hours of you and DO NOT join a team if your manager just became a partner or is not a partner yet.  Some managers will send you a contract right after you apply and promise lots of supports just so you will sign up under them.  That is a red flag!  Once you sign that contract that manager "owns" you so interview with OTHER HST managers and find one that is located in your area.

I was told a lot of things to get me in the door. These things turned out not to be correct. Eg) you'll make around $50,000 your first year and an additional $20,000 during open enrollment. I made about $30,000 my first 16 months.

I was told to make calls. "You will see money in your bank account if you make 100 calls a day."

I made 200-300 calls per day. I worked 6 days a week. 

You have to stay for 5 years before the clients become yours. 

The commission you will receive is much lower than street level (what you could get if you got appointed on your own).

You will get free leads as well as access to paid leads as well as a free CRM and training. My leader (manager) provided EXCELLENT training.

You will hear a lot of lies but apparently, some people make a lot of money.

The amount of training and support these people offer is off the charts. While I am a 1099 employee, they still offer an abundance of training and programs designed to promote my success as an individual. They do not set unrealistic goals and the amount of sales required to remain contracted is minimal, very minimal. This makes it ideal for someone who can't afford to jump right in and may need to maintain another full time income position. The bonus programs and path to partnership make a 6 figure income not only possible, but reality for many, most without college degrees. It should be the last stop on my lifetime career path.
