The Inpatient phlebotomy department is always short staff. They run with 7 ppl for morning rounds but a lot of the times ends up with 5 ppl to do rounds for the whole hospital. You only draw blood in the mornings but in the evenings/nights we also do EKGs. If you're interested just know theres always call ins on all three shifts so we're always short. New employees will start then never come back because of how short staff it is, or realizing they can't handle to work load when theres a call in. There is "4"-3 phlebotomist of evenings but a lot of times it's 3-2 people for the entire hospital in the evenings, The manager state that is enough coverage for the entire hospital when "looking ahead". FALSE because they always put last min time labs which causes us to be busy. But they don't know because management always leave by 3:30PM Mon- Fri. LOTS of STAT EKGs in the evening and I'm telling you I have never had so many STAT EKGs before in my life working at a hospital. Where most of the time it's sinus rhythm and most of the patients are sleeping or eating or in the bathroom. Lots of them will be mad about the EKG order because it was clearly not a emergency. It's a learning hospital so everything is STAT by the Providers (Residents). Gets very overwhelming. Especially when they put lab orders to poke the same patients multiple times in the same day. Like ordering a BMP then an hour later orders a CBC then later blood cultures. They simply don't care as much for the patients there. At Hennepin the RNs are required to draw their own labs. STAT labs are for RNS. We do not draw STAT labs. But a lot of time those RNs will leave it for us to grab when we go and collect timed labs and routines. Some RNs will try to stop you to go draw and some even try to guilt trip us into doing so. But there is a squad of RNs who only draws blood that they can contact but they simply don't.
Those who call in, calls in a lot because of FMLA coverage and they simply been there for 30-40+ years. So that won't change. Management does nothing about staffing. But hire people with no experience just for to add more work and burden on us. You really only need to say you drew blood before once in your life to get hired. You don't even have to be good at it for them to hire you because they need you more than you wanting this job. Management is horrible. Parking, you have to sign up on the waiting list to get contract parking which takes about 2-3years, good luck. Otherwise "discounted" parking ramps vouchers are at $40 for 5 tickets. That's correct.

I worked at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) for a period, and I can say that while the work itself can be rewarding, it’s also very challenging and not for the faint of heart. In the med-surg units, the patient load can be overwhelming. On any given shift, nursing assistants are responsible for up to 16 patients at a time, depending on the unit assignment. The job is physically demanding, and at times, patients can be difficult to manage—both verbally and even physically abusive. Unfortunately, this kind of behavior is often considered "part of the job," and staff are expected to cope with it as best as they can.

While some of the RNs and other assistants may be willing to help when available, don’t always count on it. It can feel very much like a "sink or swim" environment, where you're left to manage things on your own for large parts of the shift. In terms of teamwork, it really depends on who’s working with you—some staff members are great, but others may not offer as much support.

One of the bigger issues I faced was the disorganization of the entire facility. There’s not a lot of structure in the orientation process, which led to a lot of important information being missed or glossed over. It was hard to feel truly prepared for the demands of the job, and this added to the stress I felt. For new employees, it can feel like you’re constantly trying to catch up.

Ultimately, I’ve decided to leave HCMC for my own well-being. The stress, combined with the lack of proper training and support, made it unsustainable for me. If you're someone who thrives in a chaotic, high-stress environment and can handle tough situations on your own, this might be the right fit for you. However, for anyone looking for a more structured and supportive workplace, I would say proceed with caution.

Daily interaction with multiple universities and colleges related to student rotations within the hospital and ambulatory clinics.  Nursing students, especially, were the bulk of the profile for unit/clinic rotations.  Multiple opportunities to engage in scheduling rotations, identifying opportunities for students on various units and verifying with their instructors and unit managers.  Scheduling of meetings to solidify recommendations for students/academic institutions. Daily capture of numbers of students in the institution at any given time.  Documentation of hospital-required identifiers, for example, background checks, etc. Very detail-oriented tasks which were relied on heavily for documentation, both for community-related statistics as well as tax benefits. The hardest part of the job was the time element involved for turnaround of information.  The most enjoyable part of the job was meeting the students and their instructors and being part of the process of fulfilling their dream to become a health-care provider.

Many other duties as well:  Chairperson of the DAISY Committee; multiple opportunities for graphic design tasks; responsible for scheduling retreats, scheduling educational requirements/opportunities for nursing staff and management; scheduling of various meetings; preparing statistical data for reporting; development of various packets and rolling those out; etc.

I was hired as a cancer registrar in training. The person who I thought was supposed to be training me told me right from the beginning that me being hired was a "nuisance" and that she "didn't have time to train me". I asked my manager several three times for proper training (I was taking online courses as well, to become certified) because the way the actual world works, you don't get hired and know how to do the job immediately- no matter what it is. Anyhow, in the end I was let go because I wasn't "understanding" the job, although I never did get any training more than a piece of paper with some dates and what I should know by then. I wish I had the documentation about when I asked for training, because I was told that I may have had a good unemployment case. Hopefully they never, ever hire someone without training again, because I honestly have anxiety when I think about working there, and how awful my co-worker was to me. Hopefully the two openings they now have are for 1) someone who is already a registrar and knows how to do everything the job requires without training and 2)the other opening is for the existing registrar who should not be able to work with other people.

The doctors are great, the clinical staff is wonderful, but the training in the cancer center is a joke.

A typical work day consisted of patient insurance tracking/census of hospital demographic and insurance data.  I learned about several discount programs within the hospital and other clinics within the Metro area.  Procedures on how to access patients for approval of health care programs.  Programs included county health programs such as Medical Assistance, Emergency Medical Assistants Programs, Hennepin Health Care.  Learned how to work within the Epic software system when dealing with billing and account adjustment in the Revenue Cycle Management department.  The work culture provided a group that was always willing to help complete a task, provide needed information, as well as receiving support from other department hospital or clinical staff.  The hardest part of the job would be to get a patient to comply with what documentation was necessary to obtain for approval of insurance programs that they were eligible for.  The most enjoyable part of this job was getting to know the functions of the financial healthcare system, and helping patients to know that there were healthcare programs to help them because they were uninsured.

Overall, I enjoyed my time working at HCMC. I learned so much from the providers, social workers, NPs, and other support staff. It was here that I quickly gained immense knowledge of how a medical record is constructed and where one is to look for critical information re: diagnoses and procedures. Learning about the SOAP medical record format in college was a breeze after landing this opportunity. The hardest part of the job was finding a suitable location for typing on a laptop whenever the physician conducted an interview in a patient's room. One has to learn how to type quickly on the fly, regardless of how comfortable it may or may not be. The most enjoyable part of the job was seeing the finished product - a note which, to the best of my ability, captured the patient's subjective complaints/concerns, the physician's objective findings, the physician's assessment, and the physician's plan henceforth. I received a lot of positive feedback from the doctors and this was encouraging. It was a wonderful experience to work alongside the physicians and they were more than happy to share their knowledge with me.

As amedical assistant I was miserable. I lived kind of far away and drove to Minneapolis every day. I had to pay for my parking tickets to get free parking. I was expected to do more than what my title already did. I feel bad for most of the medical assistants that are still there. Being a medical assistant has taught me alot about other people. But I will admit working for hcmc with all the different cultures was a really big turn for me. I was extremely closed minded about it at first. Then I met the team and who I would be working with and I actually enjoyed it. Do I miss the team I was with? Yes yes I do. Would I ever go back? Not without some changes on the parking aspect and the policy. I was paying $100 dollars a month for parking tickets. Contract parking is the same price. I feel if your an employee at the minneapolis campus you should have automatic contract parking for free. Your working for them. People have kids to care for and could really use that money to pay for alot of stuff. 

The therapists in this facility provide wonderful patient care.  They have a positive attitude and try to help their patients' overall health.  They concern themselves with the overall safety of a patient's living environment as well as mental and physical health.  This clinic is patient oriented and provides a positive experience for it's visitors.  A typical day of volunteering here includes assisting physical therapists with patient care and clean up, as well as helping to complete projects that the therapists do not have time to work on.  I've learned a lot about the process of evaluating and treating patients in this clinic and really enjoy observing the process of patient care.  The hardest part of this job is trying to find work to do when no therapists are treating and there are no projects to work on at which point I look for areas that need cleaning, organization, etc.  Overall this experience has had a positive and educational impact on my knowledge of physical therapy and working with people in a health care setting.

The clinic I work in is wonderful. I work one on one with a provider. We are the only two in our little clinic. We see patients for everything from physicals to sinus infections. I do POC testing and lab draws as well as check pt's in. I also am in charge of ordering all supplies for the clinic and keeping track of vaccination and medication expiration dates as well as re-ordering them.

The management is fair. We are not the only clinic that the manager is in charge of and because we are so small we can be forgotten at times.

My one and only co-worker is the provider and she is wonderful. She is compitent and friendly and really cares about the patients. A pleasure to work with.

The hardest part of my job is the ordering. While I know how to do it, there are times when it is hard to figure out what an item is by the description in the computer. It has been a challenge but even mistakes are correctable.

The best part about my job is working with people and the variety of skills I get to use.

Provided internal customer service as a Payroll Administrator on a short term temporary contract; Trained and assisted hospital employees with navigation through the newly implemented benefits system.  
Transitioned into a permanent position as a Patient Services Coordinator; provided administrative assistance to two nurse coordinators, responsible for scheduling all procedures (EPIC software), patient check-ins, insurance verification, co-pays and receipting, and creating new patient files. Expedited medical record requests and delivery of reports and x-rays to referring physicians.

The management team was very understanding and flexible with me while accommodating some of my personal family needs at the time.

The most difficult part about the job was seeing people in pain.

The most rewarding part of the job was having the opportunity to support a knowledgeable staff of Nurse Coordinators and GI Lab physicians.
