Typical day at work:
Every day is different, which keeps the job interesting. A typical day includes assisting residents, collaborating with coworkers, communicating with families, and making sure residents receive the best care possible. It's a fast-paced environment, but everyone works together to make sure the residents' needs always come first.

What I learned:
Working at Railside Assisted Living Center has strengthened my communication, time management, and problem-solving skills. I've also learned the importance of teamwork, compassion, and building meaningful relationships with residents and their families.

Management:
Management is approachable and supportive. They encourage teamwork and are willing to listen when employees have questions or concerns. They want both the residents and staff to succeed and create an environment where everyone feels comfortable asking for help.

Workplace culture: The workplace culture is one of the biggest strengths of Railside. The staff genuinely care about the residents and treat them with kindness, patience, and respect. Just as importantly, the staff care about each other. Everyone is willing to jump in and help when someone needs assistance, answer questions without judgment, and work together as a team. It's refreshing to work in an environment where coworkers support one another and want everyone to succeed.

Hardest part of the job: The hardest part of the job can be balancing multiple responsibilities during busy times while ensuring every resident receives the attention and care they deserve. It can also be emotionally challenging when residents experience changes in their health, but it reinforces how meaningful the work truly is.

Most enjoyable part of the job:
The most rewarding part of the job is building relationships with the residents and knowing you've made a positive difference in their day. Working alongside such compassionate, dedicated coworkers makes the experience even better. The teamwork at Railside is exceptional, and it's comforting to know that if you ever have a question or need help, someone is always willing to step in and support you.

I've had a wonderful experience working here and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a rewarding career in senior living.

One of the biggest things I've learned is the importance of teamwork, communication, and attention to detail. This role has helped me grow professionally while gaining valuable experience in organization, problem-solving, compliance, and customer service.

Working with the residents is the easiest part especially with no mandations. 

The hardest part is the micromanaging, whole staff write ups for things outside of our control, conflicting employee handbook and rules, microaggressive group texts from management, constantly understaffed sometimes to the point of being unsafe for residents and staff, unfair pay amoung staff, petty cliques and high school drama. The point system and lack of regard for sickness and well being of the staff that leads to compromising the health and safety of the residents. The building is old so some residents have little hot water and in a memory care lockdown unit the lights blink because the electrical system is going bad. Upper management fails to answer phones during emergencies such as power outages and the building isn't equipped fully with a generator. When the power goes out it puts residents at risk because they don't have access to their oxygen and cpap machines as well as electric beds and recliners dont work so residents get stuck. But management doesn't care and refuses to answer phones during those periods. The low pay and overall lack of support from upper management is the reason for high turn over rates. 

Management continues moving residents in that require more care than we are able to give due to lack of staff with no regard to the safety of the residents and staff.

Probably one of the worst jobs I have ever had in my life. Understaffed and under appreciated. From day one I could never please the manager. The co-worker I worked with daily had it out for me since I arrived. Constantly pointing out to the manager my wrong doings even if they were accidents and wasn’t even nice to the residents. Constantly talked about other staff and residents behind closed doors and just was not a good work environment. I was not properly trained whatsoever even though I had no prior experience in said position. The manager did not have time to help me and just would make point of how I was not doing good enough and that the residents complained about me. Made note to bring up my personal phone usage any chance they got although everyone on staff uses theirs religiously also in front of them in meetings but only my usage was a problem. On the bright side, I taught myself and learned so many things to what’s required of someone in this position. Thankfully other surrounding companies hire aides so that not everything falls on just your shoulders. Very unprofessional behavior all around and I feel sorry for a select few co-workers that were nice to me. Don’t waste your time if you’re not perfect in every way and can’t act superficial in order to be accepted in the work place. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
One of the best parts for me is the relationships I build with the residents. Making a daily difference. Learning from their life experience personal growth and teamwork.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I would have to say emotional strain and  behavior challenges. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
For the environment I would say Fast-paced but home-like. Physically active and emotionally involved. For culture team-based (when it’s healthy) Compassion-driven  sometimes high stress 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Morning shift, usually the busiest. 6am clock in, get report from the nights shift check assignment sheets, and Care plans answering call lights toileting, brief changing showers if needed or showered scheduled residents dressing, and grooming, assisting with one person or two person assist get residents to breakfast. if you are med tech passing medication‘s.Clean rooms laundry charting. a lot of redirecting if you are in memory care, activities support. In the afternoon. Toileting ,rounds Lunch more call lights. Assist with activities, monitoring behaviors.

Work-life balance
Work-life balance at Heritage Senior Communities is not fair. You are consistently needed to stay late, come early or pick up all your days off.

My pay and benefits at Heritage Senior Communities were wonderful! I was well taken care of financially.

In terms of job security at Heritage Senior Communities, I think you will always be needed. Very secure for work load.

Management
In general, managers at Heritage Senior Communities are amazing depending on how much of yourself you are willing to give. The Office Manager is amazing, always helpful and kind to everyone.

Culture
Collaboration with my colleagues at Heritage Senior Communities was good. Those of us who worked the floor became like family. Working short staffed and all we made the best of every day!

Overall
My experience working at Heritage Senior Communities was good and bad! I enjoyed my coworkers and my residents but I feel as though the environment has gone down hill. If you aren’t willing to constantly put in an excess amount of hours than you are not considered to be a valued employee and they show you that with how you are treated.

I recently left my position at GrandPines assisted living  and would not recommend it as a place of employment.
The most pressing issue during my tenure was the persistent problem with short staffing and high turnover rate. This resulted in a constant state of being overworked, with unrealistic expectations placed on the existing employees. The workload was unsustainable and directly contributed to low morale and high turnover.
The overall culture was also difficult to navigate. I found the work environment to be unsupportive and, at times, hostile, lacking professional communication and a respectful atmosphere among management and HR. There was little to no investment in creating a positive and collaborative workplace.
Furthermore, it was disappointing that the company offered no benefits to its employees. This lack of basic support, such as health insurance or a retirement plan, combined with the other issues, made the role feel undervalued and unstable.
Ultimately, if you are looking for a stable workplace with a positive culture and basic employee support, this is not the right fit.


The best part of the job were the residents and most of my coworkers.  Management is poor and cliquy.  Lots of nepotism!  You can’t trust management.  There is no one (in management) you can voice concerns to in confidence.  Your concerns will not be addressed anyhow.  Management supposedly frowns upon gossip and drama in the workplace, however, that’s where the gossip and drama tends to occur the most.  Management has been overheard on several occasions, by several different employees, bad-mouthing and gossiping about staff.  No one is exempt.  Very unprofessional!  You, as an employee, either learn to ignore it, or leave.  Management will keep you walking on eggshells.  

The job (Med Tech) is a busy role but great overall.  Weekly mandates.  Severely understaffed, so the residents don’t get the amount of attention they deserve.  The Aides are paid a lower than average wage.  Pay is above average for nursing staff.  Medical and dental benefits are basic.  You aren’t given any sick days, and it takes forever to accumulate any time off.

-typical day was 730-4. Cleaning 5 or 6 rooms, doing laundry, taking care of sanitations, etc. Very little time to engage with residents. Learned how to not lose it under a lot of stress. The most enjoyable parts of the job were engaging with residents and the good coworkers. The worst part was the lack of communication and the lack of ability to get rewarded based on your work. After 30 days, they say there is a raise, but it is like 2 percent of what you make, which for me would have been an increase of less than 30 cents per hour. If you want housekeepers to stay, consider making the work atmosphere better for them. Yes, workers in other positions say that we all work  together as a team acting like they do as much as we do, but I don't recall seeing them clean up human feces. Housekeepers are so overworked. Thanks. 

Heritage Senior Living is a family based organization and you absolutely  get that feel as one of their employees. Edgewood Assisted Living is offers a home like atmosphere to both the residents and the staff. Offering the staff a home a way from home. The management team is above any I have ever worked with before, they do not just sit in their offices, they are all active on the floor with the staff and residents. The administrator is also a nurse and helps us to answer lights and even helps us to give baths and toilet the residents, this was a first for me! We are able to buy our lunch for only 2 dollars, and it is actually homemade food, not the nasty food you get at most places it's better then the stuff I can make at my own home! I have been so blessed to work here, it is no wonder that they have staff who have worked as aides for 17 and 18 years. I pray that I can learn as much as I can to be here as long as them. Best part is that they told me in orientation they have no capped wages.
