Highgate Senior Living

I entered my position at Highgate with the promise that it was an environment that i would be supported and that teamwork was the absolute number one goal. That couldn't have been further from the truth. the leadership of this company from the top down is absolutely unprofessional and extremely chaotic and unorganized. I was met with hostility at every turn. Even with the title of ED, the ED of the building is not in charge. she is controlled and run over by corporate management. she is unwilling to stand up for her team, or participate in the building census or overall success. Her sole focus seems to be on the residential dramas of who's toast didn't get toasted enough and what residents were at odd with each other. She offered no support for her team and has zero issue letting team members take the fall for her short comings as a leader of the building as long as it made her look good to the district management team. The ED and corporate management team made it impossible for me and other good department leads to do their jobs successfully  at every turn.  Any good leadership that this building has had has seen has been run out by lazy complacent management that has been there far too long. The corporate management team also forces team members to come on to sites like indeed and other rating sites to give positive reviews even if its not truly how they feel. This company has exponential potential at being one of the best communities in the valley. Unfortunately, with the current leadership both in building and out of building (corporate), i don't see that happening anytime soon. I hope this company can get the right leadership in place so it can soar to its actual potential. 

Hired in October 2019. Things were good at first despite only 1 week of formal training. Most of the staff was friendly and supportive; a few were openly resistant to new ideas and opportunities.
Then came COVID.
Not only was it hard to convince residents on safety precautions. some of the staff were, again, openly resistant to protocols. Plus most workers were tasked to do jobs outside their departments, particularly Dining. We went from serving in our Dining Room to delivering meals to rooms. It was difficult but manageable, particularly for those of us that really cared about getting hot food to residents. Direction from our officers and other communities was spotty and often contradictory. In fairness, we were all making everything up as we went along. But the stress of the blind leading the blind, coupled with the residents not being mindful of safety was immense.
When we reopened the Dining Room on a limited basis, our workload tripled. Dining services was, and has always been understaffed. All other departments had to act as servers - taking orders, delivering food, breakdown, clean-up and resetting the room twice each meal period. It often fell to one person having to do all these tasks by themselves. So spending 5 hours a day in Dining meant your own department suffered. The stress and anxiety has been unbearable. Lack of clear direction and support from the ED, as well as constantly changing procedures and unclear communication, makes for an extremely difficult time.
Hopefully things will get better. Someday.

Working at Highgate was a nice enough experience. I loved working for the residents that live here as they are the reason I stayed for the most part. Our ED is sometimes nice enough most times but doesn't really interact much with the residents and check on what can be improved upon which is a lot. I worked in the kitchen as a server from June of 2019 to March of 2020 and came back due to another job not working out. I put in 12 hour days most days I worked and due to covid felt overworked and not properly equipped to handle this situation and often overwhelmed where to the point of I didn't want to come in. I didn't really feel like I got the thanks I thought others did and saw several cases of favoritism. The residents were always so nice to me and I'll cherish the memories I have with them forever but the management team needs to reevaluate their way they approach some team members and take into consideration team members opinions DO MATTER and should be what you take into consideration instead of what you think is best for you. I ran my butt off for this place and felt like I got nothing in return. I put in days where I was the only server working because of call offs or no call no shows but thats beyond the point. It'd be great for a high-schooler looking for extra money or someone who's looking to work early mornings starting at 7 and get off at 3 to have some daylight left. but I wouldn't necessarily say a feasible career for someone who wants their employer to care. Overall this job made me realize that I love the elderly but if you want to love your job and get the thanks for the hardwork you put in, look elsewhere. 


Great community of residents for sure . I wish it would of worked out but unfortunately a little unorganized and don’t see the error in communication or new hire employee basic training structure. I was told to shadow a employee and when I arrived early and was there for some time after starting shift I was not able to get someone to let me in and left , ok called the next morning was asked to come in then to shadow . I showed up and the employees some super cool and the persons supposed to shadow never spoke to me and left the room and didn’t return . Orientation was a lot of talking and not learning anything that would of been helpful to actual job and it was like 4 hours . Then first night was terrible the person I shadowed did something uncomfortable that I was sure was not appropriate and wasn’t sure how to go about it then was never paid for my multiple trips to their establishment or for my first night working which was hands on and physically interacting with residents . When I felt uncomfortable to return and didn’t I was called then treated as I had lots of excuses which was not the case !!! Poor communication between director and trainer to the new hires would of been good and maybe more friendly willing employees to help those hire employees or just throw you to someone and then wish you luck . 

Worked at Highgate for 1 year then came back again to work and I've never seen a place go downhill in a little amount of time. Food quality for both residents and workers is subpar since the cooks were fired. The caregivers are over-stressed and told that they need to work more hours to compensate for the ones lost because of employees quitting. the building is bordering a health code violation with roaches and breaking pipes. The management does nothing and sits on their butts 9 am - 5 pm telling others what they're doing wrong. Not one manager besides memory care seems to care for their employees.  Hostility between workers is toxic beyond belief. The Main rules and operations coming from the home office make their workers quit on them (not the ones pertaining to the laws of the residents, but the cutting corners to make a larger profit).  Workers feel overworked and underappreciated and feel as if a one-day weekend is enough to give the workers a mental break. The best part of working is getting a sense of love when handling the lovely residents. Although some are definitely unfit for residency.

My favorite part about my job by far was the residents. Left because the good workers were constantly overworked and picking up slack and there was no reprimand for the awful employees who would constantly come to work late, call-off, or not even show up at all and when they would not even work or do the bare minimum. Management will hardly ever seem appreciated for picking up said extra slack (no thanks to their help) but will reprimand you for the tiniest of things that most of the time were out of your control. Constantly got called in on my days off because we were always understaffed, the days i was scheduled i would usually have to work doubles because of call offs, and for your “manager” to see you struggling and then leave for the day when you got there before them?!… unacceptable in my eyes. Working with the constant feeling that no matter how hard you work yourself its never good enough really messes with your mental health. There was ALOT of turnover and for good reasons.  If the place was managed better and certain higher ups would’ve helped when we were struggling it would’ve made a big difference not only for us but for the residents.

I worked here for almost a year. Love the residents and how rewarding it was to see them everyday. But, unfortunately management was one of the worst I have seen. Lots of favoritism towards care partners from the main coordinator, causing leads not to do their jobs successfully or correctly; or in some cases throughout the time I was there, doing their job at all. Along with the management problem, it also includes changing employment status from full-time to part-time without any consultation or saying anything for that fact even as I kept asking for hours over and over. 
I worked over in the cottage side, and it was very hard to get help for transfers. Especially from leads and care partners from the manor when there was short staff on my side and we were both occupied with residents. 
I made some great friends and relationships with some co-workers and Residents, but it really was more stressful days/nights without anyway to have days to yourself because of lack of management. Hopefully other people will have better experiences.

Highgate Senior Living is an incredible organization that concerns itself as much with team members’ success as they do with the health and well-being of the residents. There’s an overwhelming amount of compassion and I love that team members are encouraged to grow and advance in the organization rather than hire leadership from outside the company. The training and support I’ve received to do my job well has been far greater than any other company I’ve ever worked. Like any job, there are tough days and coworkers who make your day less than great; however, I love that everyone is given the chance to grow and improve with the ultimate goal to help each resident live a life of purpose. 

Recently Highgate switched to a review process for team members that occurs every six months. Now I know what to work on and don’t have to wait a year to hear whether I’ve made progress toward my goals. I’m especially excited by the raise that comes with a review every six months. 

I feel valued at Highgate and am proud to tell others that I enjoy working here.

I enjoyed working at Highgate the first 2 weeks out of 4 months being employed. My training only lasted 2 days before they put me on the schedule by myself. When I had a family emergency and gave more than 2 hour notice of calling in prior to shift, Highgate still makes their workers come in and work. Med tech's there are not very experienced, especially in emergencies. Med tech positions seem seem to be offered based on seniority and not actual work experience. Med techs don't offer to help, they go home at an earlier time when they are done with their work and except the caregivers to handle emergencies. Highgate does not seem to value your personal life outside of work, only value the shifts that need to be covered. Most likely will schedule you on the floor by yourself, leaving the shift to be short staffed.

I worked at the Yakima, WA Highgate. It started out great. the residents are absolutely amazing, I loved working with them. And a couple of my co-workers were great as well. But the management is terrible. They don't train well, and they don't use logic when they do. They would rather run the center as a medical institution versus the resident's home. When those changes came, it turned the place upside down and made the work environment so chaotic that no one wanted to work in it. The management also plays favoritism with certain employees, so beware, if you dont fit in that clique, you will become everybodies slave, and thats not just from my own experience but from several others experience as well.
So if you want to work somewhere with no chance for advancement, no chance for a pay raise, and having to deal with constent stress and highschool drama, apply at Yakima, WA Highgate Senior Living.
