The best part about this company was co worker's some of them, 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The worst part is that this is a mental hospital and no part of management cares about the employees mental health or wellness untill it's to late. They seemed to expect employees to work with mentally ill people while dealing with a large amount of mental stresses that will never get addressed or acknowledged. They only acknowledged that an employee was overwhelmed when they would either walk out, threaten to quit or have a breakdown on the clock. No matter how many times the employees asked to leave or be moved to another unit. By the time the issue is raised by management or recognized it was only because the employee had a breakdown or simply quit. So it would only get addressed because they were getting disciplinary action taken or they were asked to write an exit letter. Some units were very much unstructured and poorly staffed because of the turnover rate. They seemed to care more about employees just showing up than actually doing their job and that made very unsafe conditions at times. Overall management made the job very stressful. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The working environment was great if you had a good crew. But like all jobs you have high turnover and sometimes it was the blind leading the blind. Most so called shift leads got the position for being there a long time not necessarily for being a good worker so that caused some problems but other than that. You develop very good friendships that lead to a great working environment. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
For me it was good. Because I was good at my job.

I was the very first ward clerk. All of the other hospitals had one except for Highland. I was hired on a 6-month probation. Ended up working there 4 years (until we moved); wrote the training manual for future ward clerks and trained every one of them over the next 4 years. 

My daily routine: have all of the patients' charts organized, neat, up to date and ready at times for the doctors to have access to. I also had coffee waiting (plus appropriate charts) for each doctor when they made their rounds. I answered the phone at the nurses' desk; ran errands when necessary for both nurses and doctors. I sometimes delivered patients to lab or x-ray via wheelchair. I LOVED MY JOB. 

Because I was taking EMT training, the doctors often took me on rounds with them when we were not busy and I even was able to observe 2 surgeries and help put on a cast in the ER.  

I am sad that Highland Hospital is no longer. It has been replaced and now is called Grace Medical Center. 

The other ward clerks who came after me, did not like me because the things I did were not because I HAD TO or because it was in the manual. I did it because I wanted to. I am sure if someone else had written the manual, it would have been much shorter.

I have been a nurse for Highland for a few years now and have seen the shift in staff. Many of the great nurses who are proficient, caring, empathetic, and team oriented have either left Highland to work for another facility or they have transferred to offsite locations due to poor work/team culture and issues with management on multiple units. This has been very disappointing to experience. Due to the continuance of nurses leaving many of the units are understaffed and staff are underpaid. If u want to get a little extra money they offer extra shift incentives due to being short staffed, so they ask u to work MORE hours and pay u a little extra for the extra shift u work. Nurses are being burnt out and many of those who are left are not team oriented and will not help other nurses or techs. They come in, deal with only their pts, pass meds, and will hunt down a tech to toilet their pt or do any tasks they feel the tech can do and not them. I have seen patient care suffer due to this mindset and it is disturbing and disappointing. I am now joining the group of nurses who have left Highland due to this shift in work culture. It is mentally, physically and emotionally draining.

A typical day included caring for GYN/ONC female patients mentally, physically, and spiritually. The patients in our care were post ops, receiving chemo, or back for recurrent problems due to their cancer. I learned the essentials of caring for patients after surgery, how to communicate with patients and their families going through a difficult journey due to cancer, realizing nursing is not just about following doctor orders and passing meds, but rather it is the simple things of actively listening to your patients, becoming apart of their family, making sure they feel comfortable, and have trust in me to make sure they are receiving the best care possible so they can go back to have quality of life and live life to the fullest. With awesome co workers and a great manger, I looked forward to coming to work and being with my patients, knowing I was making a difference in their lives, while they inspired mine. The hardest part of my job was seeing my patients in pain and choosing to go hospice, especially our young ladies.

I have been working at Highland Hospital for almost 3 years and the only reason I haven't left is because I've been trying to get a better position at the hospital & HR is more favorable to current employees than outsiders. I work as an companion observer and I absolutely hate it. I'm trapped in a room most of my shift with senile and violent patients. I receive absolutely no help when I ring the call bells, they just sit at the front desk and ignore you. Once a patient had ripped a metal bar off the wall and was about to attack me with it, I had rung the call bell and literally had to run out the room because no one answered. The PCTs don't like to relieve you for your breaks or the end of your shift even though there supposed to. The pay is horrible, I'm literally a home health aide for the hospital and only make 10 cent more than minimum wage (which is 9.70 in Rochester, NY). No benefits are offered and there is no room for growth. The managers sabotage you when it comes to promotions because my position is a scarce position because its violent and horrible pay.

A typical day at Highland Hospital was a day when nothing went wrong. Because of the high standards of Highland Hospital and the those of the individual staff members a typical day went very smoothly.
I learned the value of organization, and accountability. 
Management never failed to set an example and do an admirable job in the face of such a highly demanding position in a very busy department. 
My co-workers were genuinely good people, who could be counted on to go above and beyond when the need arose.

Do NOT accept travel assignment at this hospital. Few things to consider if you accept a position there: 
-Nurses do first set is vitals in the morning
- Nurses have to do blood sugars if no “break nurse”. CNA’s don’t do it. 
- CNAs are not allowed to set up Tele monitors. Even if the lead falls off- RN has to fix it. 
- CNAs don’t empty foley or ostomy bags. 
- CNAs don’t record I&O- so, RN have to record oral intake and urine and stool on top of IV meds. 
- I change, reposition, feed, assist my patients all the time. 
- RN does lab draws if it’s not routine lab. 
- and, assessment is charted every 4 hours. 
- half of the equipment doesn’t work and the broken equipment stays in the storage with orange slip for weeks. 
- Management is a shame. They have all the time in the world to gossip and play “blame game”
- Travel nurses are treated unkindly. We are always last priority. 

I can go on and on. Little things like this takes our time away from proper patient care. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Diversity of staff and clients, taught me awareness of the people in the world. I received amazing training and became knowledgeable about Public Health in our communities. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Seeing people in pain.  High demand.  Accuracy was extremely essential. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Friendly and team oriented.  Communication of staff with one another was very good. Employees had great desire to help people,  everyone respectful of patients no matter why they were there, nor their income.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Each day require focus on cleanliness,  focus on duties for accuracy and efficiency.  Turnaround time for specimen processing important.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Some of my co workers were the best.  

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management was clueless as to what was going on. They were hiring people with criminal records and putting them with tweens. Hospital is nasty and has mice and roaches. Managers not being present in their units. Kids not getting appropriate psych care. Social workers used booklets as therapy. Psych Dr only saw them about 30 minutes once a week. Nurse practitioners were awesome though. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Poor. Staff is a revolving door. We joked about not even learning new employees names because they wouldn’t stay and they didn’t. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Sometimes it was a quiet night, sometimes it was chaotic.

I worked here on a med surg floor for only 8 months but enjoyed it overall. I worked overnights because the people are way nicer. During the day the nurse type A people and breath down your neck about the smallest thing. I used to work in emergency setting. So my scale of an emergency is not the same as a med surg nurse “emergency”. I don’t like drama. And days were all drama. I stayed out of the clicks and did not hang out with work people outside of work. As long as you work nights, it’s great!! The head manager is amazing and very flexible with scheduling as long as you give her notice. The ratio is 5:1 and it’s great. And the majority of the patients are really nice. Just your typical elderly people. I would definitely recommend working here!
