Administration places unrealistic expectations on staff without providing added support or resources when there are tight deadlines for something important. Employees are required to set performance goals to attain each year, but due to heavy workloads, some are set up to fail and are not able to meet these goals-especially in nursing.

An OHSU “affiliation” Tuality can’t do anything without OHSU’s approval. To be honest, Tuality wasn’t exactly seeing net gains in recent years, and OHSU wanted to expand their patient base to the Westside. Thus, the perfect partnership. 

Chief Executive Officer: This CEO has been at Tuality for over 30 years (but in this capacity since the fall of 2013). His concern is the HCAHPS scores (patient satisfaction surveys, i.e. how staff treat and provide patient care in order to receive higher hospital ratings for reimbursement money from the government). This hospital survey system is one of the ways the hospital uses to gauge whether they will match employee 403b funds each year. An extremely high importance is placed upon raising these public scores, and the CEO expects staff to bend over backwards to go out of their way to treat patients with the utmost respect and care. Yet he will chew-out and belittle administrative support staff (including his own), and yell at other Administrators behind closed-door meetings. Real leading by example stuff.

Chief Clinical Officer: Poor leadership, stiff, cold shoulder. She has given supervisor and management positions to nurses with little to no experience. There is a lack of communication when staff are reassigned over departments, leaving opportunities for gossip. All-hands email to the organization will be sent out weeks after management changes. Some of the hardest working, most dedicated employees in nursing (not just clinical) are given the heaviest assignments-leading to burnout. Leaves of absence and turnover abound in her direct reports. 

Nursing: New graduate RNs get hired, get the two years’ experience they need, and typically move on to other hospitals. Probably because there aren’t many growth opportunities here. 

Human Resources: is a revolving door with turnover. The lead recruiter is hard to get ahold of; his voicemail box is always full, unable to take new messages; and good luck with an email response unless you request a ‘read receipt’. It’s always encouraging when you send paperwork to HR and they ‘lose’ it. 

Cafeteria: The menu is on a 2-3 week rotation. Mondays are ‘meatless’, Wednesdays are taco salad day, with the rest of the menu that day being bean-heavy. ‘No-fry’ Friday. The food lacks gluten-free options. I must say that the Food and Nutrition staff are phenomenal! Every single one of them are always helpful, and go out of their way to help me and my department with our needs. I was always so appreciative of this department and their Ancillary Administrator! Bravo!

As a patient, I don’t have any complaints. Except the time I was being loaded onto an ambulance at the 7th avenue medical building, getting rained on. The EMT apologized saying they have complained to Tuality that the awning doesn’t reach far enough to protect patients from falling precipitation, but that nothing had been done. 

Not everything about Tuality Healthcare is a negative. One good thing about a small company is that you are able to know almost everyone and build relationships, if you want to. However, this can also work against you if you have a negative reputation or stick with the gossip/drama crowd.

There are a lot of wonderful, hard-working people, who try and make it a better place. Some departments have a lot of great things going for them, with great managers and directors; however, nursing is not one of them.  Management needs to lead by example, and be held accountable.

Tuality Community Hospital is a wonderful place to work.

My first job there was as an Accredited Record Technician (ART) for Tuality Home Health.  A typical day was hectic with many interruptions, multitasking and prioritizing.  I managed the medical records for home health.  This included preparing treatment plans, processing physician orders, reviewing charts for complete documentation and timeliness of getting orders signed.  There was daily communication between myself and the professional staff (RN, OT, PT, Speech) regarding documentation issues.  

I managed the quality assurance program.  This included holding monthly meetings, recording minutes, identifying problem areas that needed improvement or working on ways to improve patient care and delivery of services.  

I learned time management skills, communicating with professionals regarding correcting documentation, improvement in documentation, etc., and managing the home health record, which is completely different than an acute care hospital record. 

The team at Tuality Home Health was wonderful and a great group of people.  We never had problems with personality conflicts.  

The most difficult part of the job was long work hours and very very busy days.

The most enjoyable part was working with a wonderful group of people.  

My second job at Tuality was as a medical transcriptionist.  I enjoyed the transcribing very much, learned a lot about how different types of reports are done and improved my medical terminology.  This job was very enjoyable and I really enjoyed being able to go home on time and not have to worry about forgetting to do something that could effect patient care.

I left the employment of Tuality when I enrolled in nursing school at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon.

-management is a joke. If you consider going to meetings all day being a manager then this place would be ideal. 
-concerns brought to direct manager ignored 
-constantly being lied to by manager
-unsafe staffing
-"it's not my job" is the culture of Tuality
-uneducated and untrained staff including charge nurses 
-directors of departments have no idea what their employees job function is
-lazy people get ignored and ride along day to day, those that work hard and do their job right get targeted of they speak up
-some CEO level staff do not like the opposite gender and treat them poorly
-horrible communication throughout the system
-I'm not sure if there are policies. My manager spends a lot of her time working on them yet when an issue arises there isn't a policy
-no opportunity for growth
-they waste money on consultants that come in and don't fix anything
-you will not be paid for attending off site continuing education and have to request the day off to be able to attend. But, if you are a manager or in the quality department then you will fly all over for lavish conferences.
-the good staff always leave

If you like working in an understaffed environment where staff will not be hired to save money, if you like quality care and customer service, support from management, continuing education and a happy workplace I would suggest to work elsewhere.

If you like to do as little as possible at your job daily, blame others and believe in the motto "it's not my job" then this place is for you!!!

After receiving the minimum, surface-level training required to complete the job, requests for additional training to attain deeper understanding of the legal and regulatory aspects of the job were repeatedly brushed off, due to lack of time and staffing.
Tuality cannot offer high enough wages to retain the employees with the expertise they need. They are in desperate need of people with expertise and knowledge of the legal and regulatory aspects of the job, but they hesitate to hire people with those qualifications because they think they won't stick around.
The relationship between Tuality and OHSU is complicated and confusing. Tuality and their staff are expected to mimic OHSU's policies and standards, even though they lack the resources that OHSU possesses. Communication between OHSU and Tuality is abysmal, and communication among the Tuality leadership is just as bad.
However, PLH (paid leave hours) accrue at a very generous rate starting the first day.

Assist the Director of Human Resources (HR) in day to day operations
Provide technical and administrative support to Employment Coordinator and HR Specialists
Administer the video badge program and train personnel on the system
Develop procedure manual for video badge program, suggestion program, etc.
Administer mortgage and employment verification
Revise filing system and the security procedures for HR building
Recommended and implemented space utilization changes
Coordinate wellness column for employee newsletter
Customer service, sort mail, answers phones, organize and maintain supplies
Maintain the suggestion program and provide assistance on the program
Assist the Employment Coordinator and Specialists as needed
Maintain computer logs, such as parking permits, applications, licenses, etc.
Provide assistance and training on the video badge program
Maintain the suggestion program and provide assistance on the program
Develop procedure manual as required, i.e., video badge and suggestion program
Customer service, sort mail, answer phones, organize and stock supplies


Working the 2nd shift in Medical Records at Tuality Healthcare was enjoyable to work due to the different varieties of the job each day. You had  your everyday tasks; scanning in Ambulance Reports into the correct patients electronic medical records, along with scanning in Emergency Department signed COA's. But every day you would get different walk-in patients either needing copies of their own medical records, or just have a question about a family member's records, and answering their questions for them. I enjoy helping people of the community, so to me that was the most enjoyable part of the job. That, and either a doctor or the Release of Information Department would be looking for a lost chart, and I would look take the time to look in the places the chart might be; and the majority of the time I would be able to find the "missing" chart, and that is also helping people, but this is helping the team of the Tuality Family. I got a lot of enjoyment in that also.

Everyday I looked forward to going to work.  My coworkers are very talented and warm.  In 21 years I experienced and learned so much, not just about my duties or position, but about myself as well. When I started, I didn't realize that there was competition in Healthcare.  I didn't realize there were so many Health Insurance products.  I became the "go to" person regarding Insurance among several clinics.
When I first started working at Tuality, Administration was very different than it is now that OHSU has taken control.  It is run much more efficiently then it was back then, but still strives to be a "Community Hospital"  
The most enjoyable part of my day was Checking In my patients at the Front Desk.  The Clinic Managers were approachable and easy to talk to.  they were excellent at helping you when you needed it.  
It was a very diverse environment and it seemed that we all got along as one large group.  We were a family, for the most part.

I was excited to work for this company, but ran into some serious ethical conflicts. They promised a caring family-like work envioment and delivered another. Training is not streamlined in the scheduling department and is at the will of one person. I witnessed a serious retaliation mentality and gossiping that is kept behind closed doors here. The Supervisor was a terrible fit for the role and had multiple issues with HR filed. Everyone in the office was always on edge and avoided conversations with each other due to fear of being chastised. The atmosphere really made working here uncomfortable to say the least and HR and management swept everything under the rug to avoid the conflict. The department I worked in has high turn over which I didnt understand at first but in hindsight, I now understand why. 

I am new to the position, which is a new position in and of itself. My manager did well to promote me/it prior to my arriving. Staff have been welcoming, although might not have the best idea of what I'm assigned to do. That's OK; work in progress. 
One of the trickiest parts of the job is that everyone works on wildly different schedules, allocating their time to the clinic as well as to the hospital. My own schedule has me in various locations so it has been slow-going developing the camaraderie that exists when you are in the (same) trenches with others on a consistent basis.
The compensation ie hourly rate is great. It is nice to belong to a union although I think they could bargain for better/faster accrual of benefits.

Working at this location for the past 10+ years has had both good and bad experiences. The organization was formerly known as Tuality, now Hillsboro Medical Center(HMC). Tuality was never perfect but in my opinion had better work culture and management back then compared to HMC now. HMC seems to be aiming for better future positioning with their OHSU partnership. However, what organization goals HMC has is very difficult to realize to everyone but management as there is no clear communication with staff. 

Some of the people working at HMC have been some of the best co-workers and colleagues I could ask for. I hope HMC improves as the people working there deserve better.
