I typically begin my work day with an arrival time of 7:00 am. Sign on computer. Check telephone messages and address any urgent messages immediately. Replenish doctors lounge. Answer telephones. Assume daily tasks which are prioritized at the end of the day prior. Assist in last minute urgent inquiries all of which is done with frequent interruptions throughout the day.

While working in healthcare I have learned the importance and value of  patient care and customer relation and the role I play to assure that they recieve the attention and needs they expect while visiting the facility.

It is my duty and responsibility to have a professional and respectful relationship with management and to adhere to all policies for a comfortable and effective work environment. Managment should also be available to assist with issues employees may have with managment and/or coworkers to prevent esculated incidents and sometimes unnessary disciplanary action. 

In dealing with co-workers, sometimes co-workers become friends and you should be cognizant as not to allow the friendship to effect the ability to perform and complete daily tasks effeciently and effectively and to remain professional at all times. Also after working at a facility for a long period of time your co-works become your work family and as in family you assist when, where and how you can. There is no "I" in TEAM!

The hardest part of the job is dealing with the english barrier with individuals with very strong accents from a foreign dialect perspective. It can become very frustrating. However, the task at hand is to decipher the message that is being delivered and assist. 

The most enjoyable part of my job is working closley with physicians and working with managment who recognize and acknowlege a job well done!

A typical day at Holy Cross Operating Room, begins for me at @6:30am, I first check equipment , make environmental rounds, and await assignment at 7am. I generally touch base with all General Surgery rooms to make sure they have all proper supplies and equipment for their cases. I then go to my assigned room if I have one and proceed to open after checking to make sure patient has arrived and nothing has changed about posted case. My day is usually either a full case load day or If I've been kept free I do lunch reliefs and continually check on my General Surgery rooms. I am usually available to help all rooms since I scrub all specialties. Since I am the Senior Lead Tech. I often converse with the Dept. Head , and also the Education Nurse daily. We train Nurses, ORTs, Medical Students and P.A. Students,sterile technique and scrub technique. My co-workers are a diverse group, young and old,coming from many different nationalties and cultures.We are a Catholic Hospital, but I having been in the Washington/Baltimore area for over 40yrs I have worked at 4 of the community Hospitals as well as some of the University facilities.I have learned many things over the years, most importantly that change is good, and always be willing to learn new things within the OR. Management is actually very good at Holy Cross, they show a real concern for Patients and Staff,and Physician satisfaction.

Frequent turn over is not an accident. The patient acuity is low and it is simple to be a nurse if everything else is appropriate. However assignments are often split, particularly in ICU where you have to cross the hall to see your patients. Simply put, you cannot sit outside your room and see both patients. Your back is turned to one of them. And to make matters worse, your patients can also be multiple doors down the hall, so you wouldn't be able to hear a monitor either. Furthermore, you could have three icu patients to one nurse with one or more being intubated and needing to be weaned from the ventilator. So essentially you cant adequately monitor a patient being weaned from sedation or from a ventilator. Whenever one says something about an assignment being unfair or inappropriate it is met with silence or resistance.  There is absolutely no regard for patient safety when the unit is above 90 percent capacity and on holiday weekends. Poor morale about unit organization and  lack of follow through on promises. The only good part about this place is your coworkers who are in the trenches with you. They are cool and easy to work with.

A typical day at work is usually an 8-12 hour shift in the emergency department during which I complete patient charting and various other secretarial tasks. I spend a majority of the shift on the computer, as well as accompanying physicians to see patients and transcribe their complaints. I've gathered an extensive medical vocabulary while working as a scribe, as well as observing and learning the technique of various medical procedures. The management is very cooperative and efficient. I work under a head scribe who organizes our work schedules, as well as under the attending MD for the ED. My co-workers are all a pleasure to work with. Everyone who works in the ED is friendly and productive, taking the time to have light-hearted conversations while completing the tasks at hand. There isn't really a difficult part of my job because everyone I work with is helpful, the tasks required of me are not too challenging, and the hours are always reasonable. The most enjoyable part of working as a scribe is the personal interaction with the physicians, learning information that will be beneficial in medical school, and having the chance to interact with co-workers and learn about everyone outside of their professional life.

A typical day at work for me starts with greeting my co-workers, checking and responding to my office emails, and sorting through work to prioritize my day.

My 20 years working experience provided me with the knowledge of effectively operating an office of a maximum of 130 employees ranging from an office manager to a unit clerk.

While managing I am able to juggle and utilize my time to ensure accuracy and timeliness when preparing for meetings, conferences, training, and supervising.  Ensuring upon my return that all work and assignments are completed at the end of the day.  

My co-workers are a great asset to me and the office, which places me at ease on those days that I am in the field for 6 to 8 hours of my working day.  

The hardest part of my job came when I had to leave due to the company losing its contract and my job becoming obsolete.

I truly enjoy my job when I stepped in the office and the CEO offered me a raise and praised me and my staff for outstanding work performance.

TYPICAL workday: After picking up assignment for the day, proceed  to assigned unit and set assignment of 25-40 patients.  Determine admissions and potential discharges.  Review admission status making necessary corrections. Complete assessments and discharge planning.  Treatment team huddle about 3 hours into shift.  Arrange discharge planning.  Respond to insurance reviews and authorization  requests. Complete 3008, 1823, PASSR as required. Provide patient/family education.  Collaborate/ coordinate with providers.  Document all work in EHR.
The leadership is FANTASTIC!  No micromanagement but always available to support and be a resource for challenges.  Very open to observations and opinions.  The staff was extremely welcoming and helpful in assisting with increasing proficiency.  The hardest part of the job was not being on the same unit daily and each unit being structured differently.  Resources were not always easy to locate.   The most enjoyable part of the job was the TEAMWORK that was exhibited not just talked about.

A typical day at work begins with 0700 huddles with AM and PM staff which addresses any updates or concerns,  Leader rounding on patients and family to address any concerns or recognition of staff.  Participate in multidisciplinary  rounding with team members.  Attending scheduled hospital wide management team meetings.   Meeting with the unit managers to discuss staffing and upcoming surveys.  Daily reviews of staffing needs.  Create agendas for staff meeting and other unit meetings.  Meet 1:1 with the CNS and NP on the unit to review patient and staff outcomes. 
Currently the "hardest part of the job" is the collective bargaining process.  The most enjoyable part of my job is mentoring and coaching of staff and discovering ways to improve the different processes to ensure patient safety.
The workplace culture is one of collaboration and respect of each other.  It is truly a great place to work we focus on quality patient outcomes and staff engagement.

I had requested to work nights as I had just had a baby and did not have childcare nor was comfortable with daycare in one so young. I spoke with my supervisor and she said it was fine. I started on nights after maternity leave and the supervisor left because she was being worked too hard and had too many responsibilities and was being stretched too thin. Anyway come to find out she never changed my work status to nights and I was still rotational. New management said I had to work days because they were short, I explained my situation and they said they did not care and to put my baby in daycare. They put me on days without my knowledge and long story short tried to write me up and turn me into the bad guy. Got out of there quick! Compensation is fine but GOOD nurses are worked harder than the below average ones because "they can handle the stress". Not worth it. Also day shift ALWAYS has 6 patients on a tele floor! Unsafe!

The culture here is extreamly toxic and upper management allows it. After leaving recently I realized how much this company destroyed my mental health and just general happiness in life. Nothing is ever enough for this company or its managers. It has really gone down hill the past few years. If you have any other option I would go elsewhere. The turn over rate is extremely high which is a big red flag. My department lost about 25 employees just in the last year that I worked there. That is just my department. And every year it was the same. Don't even bother making friends with your co workers. They never stay. It's so exhausting. We have went to HR and upper upper management to try to fix the problem. Nothings changes, no accountability taken by management, they tell the workers, "your happiness is in your own hands. What can you do to make this a better workplace for yourself." 

I have to say that Holy Cross Germantown was one of the friendliest hospitals that I have ever worked.  My supervisor was very nice and supportive, I felt very welcomed as a new employee.  Pay was ok.  

That being said, because it's a new hospital, they are still working out all of their issues.  The computer system is a COMPLETE BEAR!  I felt overwhelmed by the EHR all the time, would have to stay after work for up 2 hours to complete my charting if I got an admission at the end of my shift frequently.  Once in a while ok, but all the time is too much after 12 hours already.  But that's everywhere these days. 

If you choose to work here, like I said great co-workers, welcoming environment, but be prepared for frequent change as they work out their issues and possible cancelling due to fluctuating census.
