I was a consultant there, 2003-2008. - Poorly managed. Product line shrunk as chunks of the business were sold off in order to stay alive. (Line is personal lines such as homeowners, etc.) Typical insurance company where too many people stayed too long and were too comfortable. Many of the good people left, because they could (common story). Don't get me wrong, there were people who remained who worked hard but all too often no new ideas were presented by them or by management. In today's world if you stagnate you die - and so this is the story of One Beacon.
Insurance has for years been insulated. Downward pressure by out of control product prices mixed with some deregulation is now rocking this once insulated industry. Newcomers as well as established companies exploiting new technologies, processes and methodologies are setting a pace which companies such as One Beacon are incapable of matching. One Beacon's failure is wholey due to poor management - period!
I tried to changed things while I was there but it was like trying to teach a caveman about aerospace; management is conceptually incapable of understanding today's ways.

Coming to OneBeacon from my last employer was like a breath of fresh air!

Employees are valued and opportunities abound in Specialty units. (commercial middle market & personal lines were sold off to become a true Specialty Insurance Company - so those ex-employees will most likely have a different opinion).

Flat corporate structure in my business unit with little to no micromanagement. Everyone is valued for what they bring to the organization - and all employees are expected to "think like an owner".

Great work/life balance and good pay and benefits. It's fun to come to work again after suffering under the draconian environment at another insurance company.

Overall, this is a good company to work for.  The company culture is a good one.  Management cares that you do well.  You are often left to do your job without being micromanaged which is a very big positive in my book.  The company also has a gym onsite which coworkers find a pleasant amenity.

The biggest downside is that there isn't much room to make your way through the company.  When you do happen to get into a new position, the training you receive leaves much to be desired as it is almost nonexistent.  Also, when compared to other companies, you often find the compensation to be lagging behind the competition.

Excellent work environment. Had a relaxed quota to reach everyday and as long as you reached your quota management left you alone to do your job and wasn't breathing down your neck. Well stocked "break/snack" room which you were allowed to go to whenever you needed. As long as you did your job there was no one wanting you to account for every minute of your day. Honestly there were days that I took two hour paid lunches and as long as my work was done by the end of the day nobody minded. If I didn't move out of state I'd probably still be working there. Best "9-5" job I've ever had.

This is your warning. Do not work here. Management is incompetent. Turn over is atrocious from senior claim level management to entry claim level. They rarely promote from within and do not facilitate any career growth within the company - in fact they tell departments not to hire from other departments due to the turn over. The customers are awful. There is no work life balance. Benefits are terrible for an international billion dollar company. “Unlimited” pto doesn’t exist, you get more work if you take off more than the allowed days and you can’t roll over any unused days or get paid out for your unused pto.

A culture shock. Extremely micromanaged. Poor on-boarding process. Extreme Lack of Diversity. During my tenure it was nothing unordinary to hear insensitive remarks towards minorities who I also heard referred to as "Colored People".

It seems this company did not hire anyone since the 70's. The atmosphere desperately needs diversity training. Daily unconscious bias. Felt like I time traveled to when segregation was first lifted.

No minorities in managerial positions, no minorities in senior roles, none in the building. It's time to grow as people, this place is stuck in the 50's. Wouldn't recommend!

Answering and making calls, to claimants, providers, other insurance companies and police departments.  Taking recorded statements and typing them up.  Gathering documents and putting them in the system with a brief summary.  Faxing and mailing documents, gathering all information collected for the claim and taking it to higher management for review.  Paying lost wages and medical bills. Typing up documents to send to claimants, providers, insurance companies, employers, etc.

Main responsibility:
Coding/Unit testing
Production support for urgent ticket

Flexibility in using tools available to solve problem. Eg, write a natural program or use SYNCTOOLS for reports.

Progress report/meeting to manage tasks.

Mentorship :, Senior employees may be required to help junior employees.

Challenge:
Verbal communication, especially in giving a presentation.

I enjoy coding/test and getting results. And delving into a production problem and finding/fixing the root cause.

I have been here for 7 years and there are good and bad things about this company. There is no advancement in my position, that may be the biggest con. My manager does give us a flexible work schedule, where as long as we do our 8 hours a day it's fine to adjust accordingly.

I learned alot being in this position now that my work in independent from my group. I am solely responsible for all the 1099 work and very organized with backup for auditing purposes.
