A typical day at Jacobi Medical Center can be at times hectic and there are days when there are no unusual occurrences to report. However, at a moments notice all hands are on deck.

I have learned over the years how important it is for each individual to do his or her part for the success of the operation

I have also learned it is important to promote good management skills for example; knowing the job you have been hired for, understanding the culture and environment in which you work, knowing the policies and procedures of an operation and the application of diplomacy when necessary in order to achieve the best possible results. Having good management skills is also helpful in the relationship between management and  staff. Often time staff will be more cooperative and productive when good management skills displayed shows a confident leadership.

A great place to work where all staff members work together for the common goal of serving the community with professional and optimal health care. Your efforts and service is recognized by upper management and rewarded accordingly.

The hardest part of the day can sometimes be the clientele depending on the circumstances or the purpose for their presence at the facility

 The most enjoyable part of the job is knowing that at the end of the day regardless of the type of day it has been is that everyone worked together for the best possible out come and everyone pulled his or her own weight.

Good place to learn since you see a wide variety of patients. 

Nurse management is toxic and unhelpful. They ignore the unsafe staffing and gaslight all the new grad nurses into thinking everything is fine. I don't regret working there since it gave me a lot of experience, but there is a reason they are always hiring new grads that don't stay more than a year or 2 until they can find something better. 

The nurse residency was a joke. My cohort sat in a classroom on computers for 2-3 months without an instructor primarily. The nurse educators belittled new hires for asking questions when they managed to show up to the class. They always seemed angry to have to do something. Often they forgot to show up. It was ridiculous to hire only new grads into a residency and then be angry at them for asking questions in a classroom.  

The experienced nurses and travelers on the floor were way more helpful teaching newbies and the only reason why I stayed. The attendings were also very nice and would answer questions for the nurses if you needed it. 

Jacobi has everything a good hospital should have, but nothing a great hospital needs. The facilities, the expansive, green campus, the services offered, all make for what should be a global trendsetter in healthcare. Unfortunately, the parts, particularly the human forces behind the facilities, are less than the sum of the whole.

I would be remiss if I said my time spent at this place was all awful. I've made some friends here, grown professionally, and seen what would be described by some as miracles of modern medicine in the face of great catastrophe.  But even the best Jacobi has to offer cannot erode the reputation it has garnered as being one of the worst health care facilities in the nation. 

If I were dying, if I were critically wounded, and needed to be stabilized, I would not want to be anywhere else. But as a work place, as a patient requiring outpatient care, as a human being, I would strongly advise you to look somewhere else for what it is you need.

A typical day at work: following safety protocols and quality control measures, collecting patient samples by performing venipuncture, ensures patient specimens are labelled and documented accurately.  

I believe in patient-centered care.  Showing that every patient matters by maintaining accuracy and professionalism, which impacts patient outcomes. 
 
Good management promotes clear communication to ensure staff feel safe, supported, and valued.  

A positive work environment ensures team work collaborations, respect, and accountability.  

The hardest part would be handling high workloads while maintaining accuracy, especially during short-staffed periods and busy shifts.   

The most enjoyable part is knowing that your work helps in the diagnosing and treatment of patients.  

Verify Immunizations records with CIR for infants, children, and adults. Administer immunizations. Provide vital signs, blood sampling rapid strep test, rapid HIV test, EKG, urine tests, blood sugar test. Provide triage walk- in patients and also do telephone triage. Take care of multicultural patients using language line (Albanian, Spanish, Chinese, Bangladeshi, African etc.)


Provide triage patients with HIV/AIDS. Administer medications and give treatment and discharge patients. Teach patients about HIV/AIDS and about  medications. Provide a broad range of care services in areas of vital signs, EKG, blood sampling, IV, IM, SC, ID 
injection. Assist with colposcopy and GYN procedures. Update
PCMH project related to patients with DM, HTN, chronic smoking,
 VL, CD4 and HIV medication adherence. Ensure the timely implementation of infection control. Participate actively in departmental conferences, seminars and other educational programs
  to improve the quality of patient care

What is the best part of working at the company?
Nothing at all. Not even the pay, orientation was horrible they make you wait three weeks for your first check and then they don’t use a punch in clock. It’s a time sheet you fill out but one of the nurse educators get there by 6am to observe times individual staff comes into work.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management, HR and Nursing education is so disorganized and unprofessional.  Yet they want you to be organized and professional with them their late and it’s okay but if your late you get written up on orientation. SMH.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I really don’t have any comment besides it’s unprofessional. SMH…

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
There is NO parking and paid parking be all taken so at 6:45am I am stressed to the max. Nursing educators wait to see what time you come on the premises

As part of the Ambulatory Care Leadership team, I'm responsible to attend morning huddle each morning to review the overall operation of the entire facility; inpatient, outpatient, Emergency Department, Admitting and Environment of Care.  I work collaboratively with the Physicians, Nursing and Executive leadership to ensure the HIV Adult and Pediatric Service and Outpatient Surgery departments ensure best practice and effective patient flow.  

Each day I'm faced with many challenges and we learn new ways to achievement our goal. I enjoy working for Jacobi Medical Center and having the flexibility and support to achieve the many tasks.  Although the hardest part of my daily task is completing the multiple challenges in a timely fashion while following up on the daily operation, staffing and attending meetings, it also drives me to pursue smarter and more efficient.

I've worked here for a few years and I actually like what I do. Management on the other hand are not the best, they're unorganized, not helpful, non appreciative of their employees. They also make changes everyday on how to handle different things that you have to ask the previous shift everyday to explain what we need to do. Also, there's those who've been working here for 20+ years and feel there entitled to tell you what to do and they aren't even your supervisor! Too many wanna be chiefs and not enough Indians. Worked through the Covid-19 and never got paid extra for that nor did we get anything for "Lab Week". In order to get things done you either have to complain or threaten to leave. Overall there's a few good hard working, dedicated workers that actually do their job and are helpful. The rest either are lazy or have big egos or both. 

I enjoyed providing nutrition education to those who needed it. Often times, however, patients did not follow-up for a second appointment, and many did not come for the initial nutrition consult as well, since it does not seem as imperative as a doctor's appointment. It was hard that the show-rate was low and they triple-booked appointment times to make up for this, which was stressful, since if/when everyone showed up, it was stressful. And when people didn't show up, I still needed to get my productivity numbers up, so I would seek walk-ins—that was also unpredictable, but it helped. Days that I worked along side a speciality clinic I had the best show rates. Overall a fulfilling job, although the waiting room was hectic at time (for multiple practitioners) and as I said a poor show-rate, follow-up rate made my role feel less impactful at times.

Pros:
Got the opportunity to learn more about what to do and expect in a
medical records office.

Manager was nice and never lost patience despite stressful and busy role he had.

Work was relatively easy and co-workers were nice. Typically easygoing work environment.

Cons:
Absentee management due to high demand and emergencies that occurred at work.

No career advancement unless you're a nurse or took the civil service exam. After I completed internship, I was out of work.

Could've learned more tasks especially while working in the medical records copy room. Can get boring and sometimes I almost fall asleep.
