A Typical Day at Work:
A typical day involves providing therapy to clients, coordinating care with an interdisciplinary team, and managing documentation. My role also includes supervising staff, ensuring compliance with treatment protocols, and collaborating with other healthcare providers to deliver integrated care. Some days involve facilitating group therapy, conducting assessments, and troubleshooting administrative challenges.

What I Believe I Learned:
I’ve gained valuable experience in integrated healthcare, sharpening my skills in short-term, solution-focused therapy. I’ve also learned how to effectively balance clinical work with administrative duties and leadership responsibilities. The role has deepened my understanding of care coordination, evidence-based practices, and the importance of teamwork in delivering high-quality client care.

Management:
Management is supportive, goal-oriented, and non-punitive, balancing both clinical and operational needs. While challenges exist, leadership is open to feedback and continuously works to improve processes. There is a strong emphasis on professional development, providing opportunities for growth rather than punishment for areas that need improvement. You don’t have to work on egg shells or in fear of losing your job—licensed professionals are treated with respect and supported in their learning and development.

Workplace Culture:
The workplace culture is collaborative and team-driven, with colleagues who are passionate about making a difference. The interdisciplinary setting provides a unique opportunity to learn from other professionals, and there’s a sense of shared purpose in supporting clients. While the work can be demanding, the positive environment and team support make it a rewarding place to be.

The Hardest Part of the Job:
The most challenging aspect is managing a high caseload while ensuring that every client receives the best possible care. However, this challenge has strengthened my ability to prioritize, stay organized, and think critically under pressure. It’s a fast-paced role, but the skills I’ve developed make it all worthwhile.

The Most Enjoyable Part of the Job:
The most rewarding part is seeing clients grow, develop new coping skills, and improve their lives. Being part of their journey and knowing I’ve made a meaningful impact is incredibly fulfilling. I also love the collaborative team environment, where everyone shares the same passion for helping others, making each day both enjoyable and motivating. Flexible scheduling and generous holidays are definitely at the top of my list as well. If you're looking for work-life balance and a job that doesn’t require you to take documentation home, this is it!

Health insurance options are better than what you typically find in our area. Work-life balance is good. Most supervisors are flexible with scheduling if you have children or other family needs. You accrue a good amount of paid time off, even when you're just starting. You get all state holidays off (paid) also. Plus we get paid time off when there are hurricanes or other similar situations. You aren't expected to work frequent overtime, and if you do work overtime on occasion you are compensated. 
You're expected to be on the ball, and I like that. They used COVID-19 precautions and some are still in place. There's a small courtyard for lunches in back of Metairie and out front of Elmwood building, but lunch breaks are short . Short lunch breaks mean overall days are shorter. People generally work 7:30-4 or 8-4:30 here but there are many flex options as well for some positions.

It's my impression that the clinicians and management of JPHSA take their mission very seriously. It's a good place to work for people who care about people who need and receive services from this agency. Each division of JPHSA has a different atmosphere, depending on whether you are doing community-based work on clinical services at one of the health centers. I would not describe the environment as overly fun or laidback, but most employees are helpful and pleasant. Staying on top of things to make sure everyone has access to services and affordable health care matters to the people here. When I read some of these negative reviews complaining about the half hour lunch break, I think that I'm glad I don't have an hour lunch break that causes me to have to stay a half hour later each day, as is the practice at many work sites with the old "8 to 5" thing. I prefer to get it done and get going. I'm not looking for a job that meets all my socializing needs. 

I like that they are open to using technology to modernize. I like that they care about the quality of services they provide to people. It's important to me that everyone in a workplace pulls their own weight, and I like that they try to accomplish this. 
The work done here for people in the community matters. It's a decent place to work for people who pay attention to the quality of their work and actually care about people in the community. People who work here have to be willing and able to pick up new skills when called to do so. This is not a good fit for people who are distracted or don't really care about their work quality or others.

Scheduled appointments for staff and their patients, manipulated time allotted in urgent and emergent situations, and distinguished when situations that presented clear and present danger required immediate attention, demonstrated the ability to handle a crisis situation on demand as needed until a social worker is present, maintained the schedule for all clinical staff members to ensure smooth operation of the clinic on a constant basis, answered a multi-line phone system on a 3 ring policy and executed each call thoroughly, reminder calls to patients for appointments, revamped schedule when necessary if any clinical staff member is absent, and covering for the file room clerk, assisted payroll clerk with processing clocked hours from employees to distribute payment to those employees through the Quick-books software.

My review is based on the 12 years I worked there. This is a Local Government Entity that deals with Mental Health and since 2013 Primary Health. I did not like the treatment of older staff which came to prominence around 2013 were it, at the time, seem to me were being let go (fired). By 2014 I realized that the issue was retribution from management to staff that did not at some point supported the management. Mind this is a Civil Service place of employment. The new management started to slowly get rid of as many Civil Service employees as possible and replaced them with contract employees regardless of the status of the Civil Service employee. The way they get rid of Civil Service employees is by removing their title by which the seniority is lost and new new probationary period is started for say employee. A real dirty deal is what it is.

The IT department head is not a trustworthy individual in first place, this person came on board as a contract employee to managed 4 civil service employees. During the first year the IT manager got rid of three tenure civil service employees, by forcing all the IT staff to change job titles so he could control the tenure of the staff. This was done by the complicit actions of the executives at JPHSA. I fear that all this manager wanted was to bring in his own group of people to work there. One of the new hires, before i was let go, commented that he new the manager before he got hire which is against Civil Service rules. I would not recommend this place to anyone for employment.

This organization is well-regarded in community and has been in operation around 30 years. There's a FQHC with a health center site in Metairie and one in Marrero also. There are also teams that provide community-based behavioral healthcare. Some jobs take place in the community and some are in the offices or health centers. All positions vary depending on whether work is administrative or clinical. Routine, uncompensated overtime does NOT happen here for regular staff so work-life balance is okay.

The team is a pleasure to work with. However, the management and the priorities of the company are lacking. As a big company it has mostly business in mind and no interest in the people who work for them. Rapid flow of specialists, seems like the company doesn't value the people working there and all their devotion goes unnoticed. Limited time off. Basically they say it is ok to take some leave, but its really not. No overtime. Short unpaid lunch break.On top of your direct responsibilities you'd be expected to do extra work(not paid of course). They expect you to go above and beyond, but on the minimal pay and under loads of micromanagement.
