A typical day at work:
The day can swing hard between calm and chaotic. Some shifts feel smooth and organized, while others feel like you’re putting out fires with a spray bottle. A lot depends on staffing and how well the team is communicating that day.

What I believe I learned:
I learned how to adapt fast, think on my feet, and work through situations where the resources or support weren’t always ideal. It taught me a lot about prioritizing and advocating for what patients actually need, not just what’s convenient.

Management:
Management can be hit or miss. Some leaders are visible, supportive, and willing to step in. Others feel disconnected from day-to-day realities, slow to respond, or inconsistent with expectations. Communication could definitely be tighter.

Workplace culture:
The culture varies by unit and shift. When you have a good team, it feels amazing—super collaborative, everyone has each other’s backs. But there are times when morale dips, cliques form, and you can feel the burnout in the air. Consistency is the biggest issue.

The hardest part of the job:
Hands down: the workload during understaffed days. It’s draining trying to uphold high standards when the support and resources don’t always match the expectations placed on you.

The most enjoyable part of the job:
The good coworkers genuinely make it worth it. When the team is flowing, communicating, and supporting each other, the entire shift feels lighter. Those moments remind you why you do the job in the first place

as a tech u want to feel important just as much as the pharm d ...well here ur treated like kids .... the pharm d talks to u like your children because they're  so use to the old techs not doing what they are told .   they care more about appearance than they do about the actual work life . they don't want you to even look professional . they rather u wear uniformed high school kids clothing unlike smocks or scrubs or professional dress clothes in uniformed colors . this was the worst pharm tech job i had.   everyone complains .... and almost every old employee is now gone (2014 JUly) ! that should tell u A LOT ! new people came & left so quick it was sad. and they pay terrible . no OVERTIME or u will get written up . 

oh write ups were the most petty thing i have  seen . it was like working in a high school classroom environment. and unlike other jobs where u get a grace period ... there is NONE ! 

WITH THE TRAFFIC THEY HAVE SURROUNDING THE HOSPITAL CAMPUS u would at least think they would care enough to consider it. the worst congested area i have seen .  Leave extremely early to be on time because its ALWAYS something goin on down that area ALWAYS !

and beware of the neighborhood ... pray you get off early! 

OH AND ALSO one pharmacy will have u feeling like ur a cashier rather than a certified pharm tech ( monument )

count ur cash register / help patients  or get ready to product dispense or in take an Rx .... answer phones (they phone watch too because no one picks them up )

just the insurance really , the convenience of food places they have for lunch , the hospital outpatient experience and u do get to experience working with a wide range of different drugs and its generics .... and if ur a people person you will love working with the patients

TRUST ME THIS REVIEW IS NOT OVER EXAGGERATED

Been here for 25 years. Leadership use to care about the employees. They showed appreciation through holiday parties, benefits fairs, employee appreciation etc. I was also easy to be promoted based off of experience and years of service. So many climbed the corporate ladder just from having experience and not always the education. Once jhh built the Zayed and Bloomberg building the culture changed. Old Leadership was thrown out and new leadership was brought in. The old Leadership had built employee, leader relationships and new the employees on a work and personal level and actually showed empathy and concern not only with their work but them well being. This new Leadership don't care about anything but numbers. Everything is a number. Patient Care has turn more into a competition again other local hospitals. They run it more like a hotel than patient care. They also add  a million other duties onto job descriptions bc they have staffing issues. So you will find yourself doing 3 other ppl jobs including yours. Management will deny your pto request and have you working non stop bc they are too cheap to hire the amount of needed staff. They would rather burn out the staff that they have then get upset when the staff gets burned out and sick and need medical leaves. They don't even want to compensate your fairly to the amount of work that they add on to you. The non union staff really need a union bc without a union they can do whatever they want to do to you. This is a very toxic workplace. They don't even promote within unless you are part of a click. They will hire less experienced ppl, tell you you are not experienced but ask you to train the new person. I can't wait to find a new job and kiss this toxic place goodbye forever. People come and go. High turnover rate. You have been warned. 

On arrival to work, I check my work email to see if there are additional work requirements for the day. I then make a list of what is to be done on that day along with the time frame, it should be accomplished. I then check with my supervisior to discuss the pervious work day and any other issues. 
My job entails explaining and recruiting new study participants for the ongoing study. I also follow up pervious participants either via email or phone call to either remind them of their future appointments or to clarify some information. 
The informed consent along with the study's objectives are explained to the potential study participants and a copy of the signed informed consent is given to them if they agree to participant.
There is the patient questionaire which each study participants are required to fill out and I am available for any questions.
Every 3 months, blood samples are withdrawn by me and carefully processed in the laboratory as well as stored. 
All the data that is gotten is scanned into the database and then analyzed.
I learnt that a team working together for the common goal is more likely to succeed with minimial stress. 
I am priviledged to have wonderful coworkers who are willing to answer questions as well as assist if needed. 
The hardest part of the job is a hard question to answer but it can be challenging to report to different principal investigators simultaneously but I have been able to overcome the challenge by working faster, smarter and with more precision.
I enjoy the patient contact, it is a rewarding experience for me when the participants is satisifed with the level of care given.

Hopkins is an excellent organization going through the pangs of change. If is a good the place is to work depends on your function,  If you are a 'line worker' and unionized, you get fair wages and management doesn't make you work too hard.  If you're exempt professional (non-clinical) you'll work hard and long hours for less than market wages.  But, you won't be required to improve or advance, only to keep working and not questioning.  Change comes slowly to the place.  The physicians and nursing 'rule the roost' and it's hard to make changes and extract performance for anyone.  HR is rather ineffective and overburdened.  If you go in with too low a salary, they will not let you get large increases.  For example, if you go in with a position you are overqualified for and accept a lower salary to get in, when you do get the job you are fit for, you will receive a lower salary than coming in from the outside because they won't let you 'jump that high'.  Many people leave, then come back in order to get a raise by 'coming from the outside'.  It's hard to get hired from the outside, however, as current employees are given preference.  It is very decentralized, which is good and bad.  Advantage is you get to work with VERY smart people.  Everyone is over-educated.  If you don't have 'letters' you can put behind your name, you'll be the underdog in a company where employees have strings of degree designations behind their names.  This is clinical and non-clinical.  It's good hard work.  But pay is low.  Benefits are great, however.  If you're young go in now and stay.  If you're older, you may want to re-think employment, unless you're coming in at a senior level.  It's hard to advance within the organization.

Johns Hopkins Hospital is a great place to get psychiatric nursing experience, particularly because they have specialized psych units including a pain/geriatric psych unit, schizophrenic inpatient unit, eating disorders/mood disorders inpatient unit, acute psych unit, and psych ED. Additionally, they provide opportunities for day hospital experience. With that said, there is less teaching about psychiatric disorders and their management, and more encouragement for the RNs to get through orientation just to complete tasks (i.e., pushing meds, following through with orders, etc.). There is some learning just by being exposed to different patients with different disorders, but the organization and psych department in general, needs to provide staff with more training and exposure to education - this would not only improve patient care, but improve RNs clinical expertise and skills. Most people take positions at this hospital to LEARN and unfortunately within the psych department, nursing is seen more as expendable and just staff to complete tasks. Many units are short-staffed and people are quickly replaced, only for other staff to leave. 

The point system is in humane for human beings. U get occurrences for everything. If you’re sick , have an emergency and have to leave work, forget to clock in or out by accident, running late, etc you get occurrences. After 3 you’re written up. The pay sucks for everything they want you to do. They lie about your job description when they hire you then once you’re in you are their slave. And once you open your mouth on what they’re doing to you, you’re the enemy.You are constantly pulled and tugged around in different departments because 
of call outs and everyone gets on FLMA
in order to not get occurrences when they call out. There favoritism for those who kiss butt. And tons of micromanaging. The supervisors don’t do anything other than walk around and give orders and don’t jump in to help you with anything. They add on new doctors as well as overbook and doublebook in order to get more money but don’t provide the help needed to run that many patients. It’s very overwhelming for one person alone and they only give you excuses as to why they can’t send you help or only state that they’re trying to hire more people. The hiring process is grueling because you’re waiting about a month in order to collect all the data they ask you for. Vaccines are mandatory for working there no matter how you feel of you will lose your job. Employee parking is over a mile away from the building . You only get 30 minutes for lunch which it’s impossible to leave and most of the time you’re working through it it they still deduct from your pay. There are tons of mandatory meeting before and after work and all just to constantly drill you about surveyors coming and audits . You are not human there. You are a robot. Remember this

The work was gradually less rewarding and administration frequently frustrating

It's been 6-7 years since I left so this all info from that time:
Workload was very high much of the time.  There were frequently empty medical social work positions which increased work load on those still on staff.  Administration and administrative issues were endlessly frustrating.  The pay is very low and opportunity for pay increases/raises was virtually non-existent - in fact, they were non-existent.  The only increases possible were standard of living wage/salary increases annually which should be standard anyway (as indicated in the name).  

Positives - I worked with some incredible colleagues and mentors.  I made some lifelong friends.  I learned a tremendous amount which has served me well since.  There are good educational benefits as part of the employee benefits package as well as CEU and other educational opporunities offered frequently on campus.  I almost never paid for a CEU during my time there (which is good because I couldn't afford it).  

My best advice as a medical social worker I suppose would be to not waste too much time there.  If you're new to the field then get in and get the experience, connections and education and then get out.  Once you have a clinical license and more experience you could come back and get better pay along with the decent benefits package but staying long term financially is a wasted investment.  
 

I was there working for the Administration, some of whom loved the work that I did; some of whom were jealous of the work I did, and some of whom didn't care about the work I did.  As a business consultant, I found that the end users (mainly the doctors and nurses) appreciated the time I spent with them to get the work done (i.e., get them paid); however, there were several individuals who were dead-set against certain staff, and as a result, made sure not to get the doctors or nurses paid.  

At the peak of the season, with JHMI staff (doctors and nurses) going through digital changes, some people in Administrative were being very petty, and charged staff with unworked hours (subtracting from their actual hours worked versus the hours recorded by the faulty Kronos system), making them responsible for problems with the HRIS system that did not account for these issues. 

In a 40+ plus hour workweek, taking away as little as 15 mins per shift could amount to staff not being able to pay for their lunch and/or parking fees.  They were, for example, charging staff for not being on their property when the nurses and doctors were on their campus, just not at their floor yet.

More importantly, staff (including upper management) usually complained to me behind closed doors. However, the one thing that bothered me throughout my stay is that they hired the wrong payroll person who was not a good fit for the job (so said the staff and upper management nurses).  Hope this review gives you a reason to work for JHMI now; pay is getting better in time, but they are also working against a legacy system that has been built over time.

Working for Johns Hopkins has been a learning experience with many ups and downs.  My first job was in Behavioral Health Outpatient Department.  This job afforded me to learn many different software programs and how to manage the programs intake and discharge processes and make suggestions on how to better the process.  My ideas were welcomed with open arms and suggestions were taken seriously and even implemented.  My typical day would consist of welcoming our patients, getting ready to support therapists for groups, making sure the patients had what was needed for the day, prepare paperwork for patients that were starting and/or ending the program, setting appointments on EHS.  The end of the day was typically for scanning in documentation and preparing to the next day.

Currently working in Occupational Health has taught me how to multi-task and be able to pivot on a dime.  Our department medically clears newly hired employees and keeps all current employees up-to-date with their medical requirements, does yearly compliance appointments, return to work appointments, worker's compensation, accommodations and blood borne pathogens appointments.  A typical day would include scheduling all these types of appointments, keep track of inventory for medical supplies and immunizations and order anything needed, answering telephones and keeping track of employees needs.
