Kennedy Care

Kennedy Care provided me lifelong friends: but not due to our mutual effort towards the company’s mission; rather, in retaliation to how we collectively were being mismanaged and mistreated by those who supervised us. In the finance department, I was lucky to work within the bubble of my team and supervisor - who genuinely cared for my well-being and growth as an employee. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for many of my peers or for my treatment as an employee from those above him (more specifically, from our CEO, at-the-time President and those who are part of and joining the “privilege -pack” within the office). Yes, Kennedy Care has been around for 15 years - but its business plan, office structure and management styles have been inconsistent every 6-12 months in response to its lack of retention and respect of its staff. In my short 8 months there, I experienced TWO WAVES of drastic transition and complete change of structure. From people quitting to people being purposely isolated over the weeks and eventually fired - very little of the retention problem results from growth of its employees. For example: of the TWELVE administrative employees who have left Kennedy Care between February and December of 2018, I can honestly only count TWO (which includes myself) of the departures as movements towards increasing their careers as the main reason. The remainder realized that they could not operate under this system and I supported their decisions due to their treatment. 

Ultimately - this is an organization that craves extreme-growth at a time when their current business plan, treatment of their staff (both administrative and field) and day-to-day practices are 1) extremely reactionary 2) “high school-like” drama-filled and above all 3) unprofessional. I would not recommend anyone to work for them in any other department than the finance department - and even then, this department is under-appreciated, over-worked and especially treated as less-than due to educational standards.

Paper education DOES NOT EQUAL success. Honesty, empathy for ones team, a hard work ethic and a shared drive to always improve oneself - THAT is what brings success. I hope that my friends who are still there will receive better treatment than those before them and I wish the management and human resources staff the best of luck in their self-reflection.

The first word I remember being a theme was transparency and that the company wants to make sure everyone is on the same page. That was often rarely the case, during my time there which was 10 months in my role, they changed the structure 3 times. The restructure always came as a surprise to us and we never were able to say what we thought would work- as the people in the roles they were changing. Mind you me being in my role for 10 months far surpasses what the average 4 months lifespan of a care coordinator. I knew that the job was going to be very much a "crisis mode" job because that is the nature of home care and working directly with people, however I did not expect that the vast majority of the crisis would be coming from the office and not the actual work. With constantly shut doors and beyond useless leadership it was non stop chaos. Then came the empty promises that things are changing and getting better but I still found myself working 55 hours a week trying to keep all my scheduled filled and juggle other tasks that were not in my job description:  training new people (did that 5 times) one of which was my general manager, who made at least 40k more than I did. Was there ever recognition for that additional work?  No, not in the slightest. It was brushed over just like anything else the low level employees were doing in the background. I am so sad that this company turned out to be such an incredible let down like this because I was so excited for the opportunity when I first got the job. Also I was going say a con is that benefits don't start for 90 days but to be honest no one works there that long so that is a smart move on their end.

I learned so much more than I bargained for during my time as an employee,  I was drawn in my how "up and coming" the company appeared and I was also drawn to the decent salary they were offering. I really enjoyed working with my co-workers and doing a lot of problem solving. The location downtown was nice- I get to participate in community events and could take walks on my incredibly rare lunch breaks/breaks in general. I really liked getting to work with direct line staff, and making sure they were as happy as I could make them as well as interacting with the clients- I would have liked to have gone seen them in person more but that was also few and far between.  Near the end of my employment I was finally able to work on projects but after months of overworking myself and being consistently stressed it was too little too late.

This company puts on a great front.  Management is awful.  CEO means well and has a great heart, but "upper management" is a joke.  "Upper management" and CEO are basically best friends, therefore as an employee you are unable to take concerns you have with the boys "in charge" to the CEO because CEO will take his "besties'" side in every situation. The turn over rate in both office staff and caregivers is absolutely embarrassing. When you pay your caregivers low, hire desperately, and treat employees like dirt, it is common sense that employees will not stay long.  When turn over rate is frequent, then clients are unhappy with the inconsistency that Kennedy Care provides.  That was a frequent complaint that I dealt with on a daily basis.  Some advice I would give to the company is, treat everyone equally and with respect.  Otherwise Kennedy Care will not last.  There is a reason Kennedy Care can not keep staff.  The workplace culture is tense and negative.  "Upper management" is condescending and has an ego out of this world.  Another piece of advice to the CEO's best friend, You Do NOT know everything.  There were several people in the office when I worked there, that had years of experience in the field than he did. But my personal opinion, because I was a female, he did not respect my opinion or ideas.
The company has a lot of potential, but management needs to make some drastic changes in order for the company to sustain success.  A home health care agency is a business, but remember on a daily basis, you are there to care for people, not worry about getting as much money as possible in your pocket.  Promising clients things just for them to sign a contract is desperate.  Promises being made, then not being able to provide that is setting Kennedy Care up for failure.  I would not recommend this company to take care of any of my loved ones, or anyone I know to work there.
Kenney Care is a joke, sadly.

I've been with Kennedy Care for several years, and I've never felt more valued as an employee or as challenged in a position. My daily tasks and goals are consistent and clear and I always find things to keep myself busy. I feel appreciated by my supervisors, co-workers, and direct reports. This type of positive environment really keeps me motivated.

The most challenging part of my work involves ending my day. I get so excited and productive that I sometimes look at the clock and have to remind myself to find a good stopping point.

The company provides paid time off, flexibility to work from home when necessary, snacks and coffee in the kitchen. Management strives to make sure workspace are comfortable and personalized to meet our needs. Employees that work 30+ hours per week are offered Medical, Dental, Vision, and Supplemental benefits. 

We have a culture of people first, which is a value that our CEO exemplifies. This isn't specific to our clients/customers. We aim to make every interaction we have a positive and productive one. This happens to be my favorite part of working at Kennedy Care focuses around the relationships I have built with our admin staff, field staff, clients, and vendors. I work on the Finance Team and do not get to meet many of our caregivers or clients. Whether it is in person/e-mail/phone, every interaction is a chance to develop great relationships! I want the other side of the conversation to know that Kennedy Care truly values them and their time.

What is the best part of working at the company?
While the mission is honorable and the owner has a heart of gold, my program Director turned out to be self-serving and lacking integrity. I resigned after enduring 4 months of abuse by the Vice President of Ooerations. He was summarily dismissed after an investigation but what my Program Director did to me was far worse. The mission is important and the need to care for our veterans is righteous. I pray this Director has a moment of clarity and integrity returns to her.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Top heavy executive staffing that is detached from those putting in the front line work.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
When the executives aren’t undermining the integrity of their subordinates, the owner established a family first mentality. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
No longer an employee. When employed, I gave everything I had and even worked when being abused by a Vice President of the company. I was struggling with my own Combat related issues but was dedicated to every veteran on the roster.

What is the best part of working at the company?
My clients I took care of! The only good part about working for them. They never had many clients in my area. I ended up getting sick and having seizures.  I was hospitalized for over a month and sent to rehab. When I was on LOA I was taken off and made to resign. I never received Unemployment after working for almost two years.  I didn't appreciate how I was treated.  I was told I could return back to to work after my six months of not  driving . In reached out and was turned down! 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The lack of responses when I reached out to Administrators about any issue. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I have no idea I got hired over phone.  And also the office is located in Ann Arbor ,Michigan 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I had two regular clients Monday-Friday
 I even went back to back daily.

The culture and leadership at Kennedy Care are toxic. The CEO and COO have a codependent relationship and there is no confidentiality. Leadership discusses politics and religion, in the workplace, which can create a hostile environment if you have differing opinions. The COO has hired all of their friends to work in high level leadership roles, creating a high level of conflict of interests, and making it difficult for new leaders to manage their direct reports. Family members of leaders are favored in the hiring process, not providing equal opportunity. When issues are brought to the forefront/presented to the COO, they are dismissed if they do not meet their agenda. Would highly recommend avoiding this company, especially if you’re looking for a successful career in Human Resources.

Kennedy Care, Has been a great place to work for, 
flexible scheduling, good pay, great management, quick response times to questions, or concerns. 
A typical day at work basically consists of light duty housekeeping and companionship throughout the shift,  
I have learned a lot from my clients about who they are and what they have done in their lives. 
Management has been Great!! A big help when needed.
The workplace culture seems to have strong leadership, and great client and employee relationship.
Their is nothing hard about my job!
The most enjoyable part about my job, Is getting to see my clients daily and doing the things for them that they may not be able to do anymore, and to make their day and life a little easier. and the companionship with the clients listening to their stories and what they have been through in life. 

A typical day for me is arriving at my clients apartment on time clocking in and taking out the trash if it's sitting by the door. Drive client to errands such as the post office, bank, drug store, and grocery store. I assist client at the grocery store by pushing grocery cart and unloading groceries on the belt at the check out lane. I load groceries into the car and unload the groceries and carry them in the apartment and put them away. I am also a companion there are times when my client don't have many errands to run and just wants to go out to eat. I enjoy having lunch with my client he is very knowledgeable on current events and its fun listening to him voice his opinion.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I have a regular schedule and can pick up shifts whenever I have extra time, even in different cities My schedule coordinator always returns my calls and texts.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Most shifts are 2 to 4 hours long and far apart. It's difficult to get 8 hours in one day. I drive almost two hours total to get seven hours. The company does not pay me for driving 35 miles one way for a short shift three times a week. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I've never seen or been there. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Drive 40 minutes to client and complete the client's needs. Drive 45 minutes to another client and complete client's needs. I use two separate applications for each client daily.
