Kindred at Home

Kindred at Home was a very nice and well put together company until the last few months. Being overworked for months, only to have a practical tease of a decent work schedule before having more work piled on, as the general manager over the entire intake would state as a compliment (as she has not been there most of the time during the brute of the work and later hours), while being understaffed and underpaid with only verbal compliments as a "reward" versus raises/bonuses which the staff would much more prefer considering the quantity and lack of consideration the company as a whole has had for their employees. The company as a whole has seemingly done their employees "dirty," as many would say, and seemingly only care about their profits versus their employees well being (mentally and physically).

The manager of the E-Referrals Team as well as Intake have tried their best to accommodate their employees considering the circumstances and have stuck with them through it all despite being overworked as well. They have worked in office with their employees during late hours (as late as 11:30pm a few months ago) and have provided tremendous support during times as such. They have also worked tirelessly trying to get approval for more positions/openings so more individuals can be hired to give us the extra support we need, which has been successful over the last 2 months or so. We now have a team that stays a little later than the 9:30-6:30 employees, although they still end up staying a little later too and will be once more branches are piled on us as our "reward".

Overall, it seems the employees of Kindred at Home are underappreciated/undervalued by the company as a whole, very obviously taken for granted considering the lack of consideration for employee well being and pay, and are considered as someone who can simply be "replaced," as long as the company is making money.



Job Security - this is becoming a touchy subject within the last few months as now two intakes have been fired, Alabama and Winston Salem, yet statements are being made not to worry, that our job is secure. The inconsideration of this company truly comes into play here. During this time of the COVID-19 Virus, where jobs are not hiring, virtually everyone is having financial issues, and so on and so forth, the Winston Salem Intake Team were told that their last day is May 22nd. During a time of uncertainty of when jobs will be hiring again, unemployment is at an all time high, as well as financial issues, the company has decided to let another intake go, trying to consolidate their branches into one intake (again, this is where the understaffed, underpaid employees come into play). Packages are being provided for these employees as well as the opportunity to apply for other positions within the company, but to an extent.

Truly, the main perks of working for Kindred at Home is the ability to work from home (as long as you are working efficiently), working with great and understanding management (specifically Intake and E-Referrals Team managers), and some of the nicer sales executives.

I hope this company can get it together and do what is right for their employees as an employee's happiness and well being reflects the care the patients receive.

I was recruited to help open Gentiva's first Start Up hospice in Eastern NC. Working for Gentiva was the most rewarding experience I've ever had professionally. I felt super supported, compensated well, & was surrounded by people who worked hard to provide excellent care & customer service to their patients and referral sources. Then.......Kindred bought us. And EVERYTHING went downhill.  

Micromanaging their employee's to the 10th degree, having their hospice sales people become more like car sales people. The rewarding interaction I was able to have with patients and families was gone. I was told to increase sales calls, hand in referrals and move on to the next sales call. I was told I would no longer be meeting with pts/families to learn what they needed most from hospice. So therefore, I was unable to communicate to our clinicians the specific ways that we could assist these patients & families with their end of life journey.  Referral sources started sharing with me the negative feedback they were receiving from our patients/families regarding their hospice informational visits and their starts of care.  

The kicker occurred when I handed in my resignation. My Area VP of Sales appeared shocked and shared how they didn't want to lose me. She said, "Will you please consider talking with our Regional VP of Sales before you make your final decision about leaving?" The next morning, I missed a call from him and then received an urgent text about how he is trying to reach me and to PLEASE call him asap. I did and it was a productive conversation. He also reiterated how much the company didn't want to lose me. I am a top producer within my region. He asked me to think about what it would take to "retain" me and that he would like to talk again the next morning. I have to say, I was feeling a bit hopeful. I LOVE what I do, but not the new framework (limited pt/family contact) that they were adopting. I spent time that day putting some thoughts together and writing up an email to my RVPS. I even had some co-workers read & proof it and they all said the proposed ideas I had could positively affect our branch. I ended my day looking forward to my scheduled conversation with my RVPS the next morning. But that call never occurred.  

I received a call after-hours that night from my Area VP of Sales. With no explanation, she says, "We've changed our minds and have decided to accept your resignation.' I then proceeded to be spoken to as if they were firing me or something. I gave my heart, soul, blood, sweat & tears to my hospice branch from the first patient I brought in. To be treated by this new Kindred Hospice leadership the way I was treated is uncalled for. Unfortunately, it reflects everything about Kindred Hospice that I came to know in my final 6 months with them. No matter the words they use or how often they say it, their actions say that they don't care about their employees, but only about the almighty dollar. They have taken something so beautiful, helping people with end of life care for their loved one, and turned it into a business focused solely on profit.

Good place to work if you like a employment that costs you money, don't need any leadership at all, don't ask questions, enjoy living in poverty, like to work 7 days per week 16 hours per day, and don't have a life outside of work. But, here you won't have time to have a life of your own anyway. 

They say, Oh, call when you do an admission, yet there is no one that you can talk too. My "Clinical manager was never there, when she was there she cried all of the time because of the workload, she quit three weeks into my employment so I've never had anyone to ask questions to. The QA people are ridiculous, nit pick everything and you end up reworking admissions otherwise know as Starts Of Care (SOC's) more than 5 times. 

The QA and coders (who have absolutely NO clinical knowledge or experience) assess the patients you have seen from charts alone and insist you downgrade the patient's actual abilities so they can get more money from medicare, medicaid and insurance. They will tell you to state that the patient has to have someone else administer their medications simply because they use a walker, and if they use a walker they can not dress themselves, bath, etc. BTW, you don't get paid to keep reworking the SOC's. 

They get upset with you if you don't schedule at least 5 visits with a patient, even if they don't need it.  Some of the things they want you to do approaches fraud. Then the scheduler is constantly moving your patient's to other days, even if you have already made appointments to see them at a particular time and day, the patient will just disappear from your schedule. Then you have to be on call from 5 pm til 8 am and they still expect you to work the next day even if you have been up all night with the calls coming in.

They like to have you do tons of paperwork, stating the exact same things on multiple different forms. Geesh, you' think they would  understand that the information should be put in a database and accessible to all the different forms, but no. They use computers, but not the way computers should be used, nothing is networked or shared between forms. The only thing they use computers for is to fill out a myriad of forms restating the same information as stated on the first form and three or four other forms. You do an SOC, 25 pages, the restate a lot of the same information on at least 4 other forms. Very unorganized, Don't even get me started on a discharge. You get paid piece work, like the way the old sweat shops used to pay their employees.

And I have left a lot out, just because I don't have the time to list all of the con's.  The pro's, You get an old beat up IPad with a battery that goes dead in about four hours to do your work on.

Required to cover the entire county, other disciplines required to make not cover a portion but productivity requirements were the same.   Cold, uncaring upper management that only looked at numbers.   Our business is people yet “management “ lacked greatly in their own people skills dealing with staff.   I have worked for Kindred in almost every environment from long term accute care ( therapist and director) to rehab/SNF ( therapist and director) and then to home health.   I have never felt more disrespected and demeaned than I did working in the home health division.   The management in this environment has no clear understanding what an SLP does.    I was hired because of all the various certifications yet questioned on the cost and application of my skill.    Unfortunately, I do not think in the region I was in this will ever change because the inept kept getting promoted.    What I don’t understand is how a company can see my position regular change(approx  every 2 1/2 years ) because of burn out and see that there may be a problem with management , not the staff member.   It is sad that as a Zkindred employee in all of their environments I was treated was such little respect.   The staff  I worked with in home health were wonderful.  My fellow therapist ( in all disciplines) and nurses were skilled and carrying.   We, out in the field, worked wonderfully together.   We made s great team.  Unfortunately management didn’t feel it was necessary to to be a part of team.  They seemed to forget that we are all the customer.  We are deserving of respect.    Ironically, my education level, experience, knowledge, and patient care, are not what matters.   What matters, is the bonus at the end of the year for management team.   How much they can save from the budget, do their bonus is bigger, regardless of the backs that had to be walked on to get there.   I assure you no one below management ever received a bonus or s pay raise which was controlled by the annual reviews that numerically allowed for no raise.   When I was part of management my team ALWAYS recieved s bonus if I did.   I would not have been successful if it were not for my team.    I think management needs to be told that.  They need to realize that their success only exists because of the people out in the field who are dealing with the ( customer) that keeps the company running in the black

I chose not stay through my 90 day orientation with this company. You are not paid for the hours you spend charting, driving, or for extended visits. There is a constant lack of communication among the office staff, which the RNs inevitably pay for in the end. I was told on orientation "We like to keep CHF patients through three cert periods." I'm sorry, what?! No, you discharge when the patient is ready, not when you've made all the money you can. You had a full day? That sucks for you, they're not going to leave the office to do a visit so guess who gets a phone call after their work day was supposed to be over? You. Skilled nursing is going to discharge, but PT/OT are still in? Don't even think about it. PT/OT will do a discipline discharge so they aren't stuck with the OASIS discharge. Every. Single. Time! Nursing is constantly overwhelmed. If the patient is not homebound, MCPs are VERY insistent that you find a way to keep the patient. Very shady and I question their ethics. If a patient refuses anymore visits, they will often call and try to coerce the patient into keeping them so that they can make money, even if there is no skill. I left out of growing concern for my license and felt that the company was not practicing ethically. Numerous calls being transferred to your phone that can be handled by office staff, but they choose to forward the call to you so they don't have to deal with it...while you're in a visit trying to focus on your patient. Constant interruptions during visits from the office because of this! If an issue is found during other discipline visits (PT/OT), they will call you not to notify you, but to have YOU call the physician because they don't feel they should have to deal with it and say "It's a nursing thing". Thank god the medicare rules are changing in January because this company is shady all the way around! I have left this company and am with another home health agency where things are done right and I feel at ease. Kindred may seem like a good place to work on paper or interview, but look at their history of fines, lawsuits, and violations and ask yourself, "is this worth my nursing license?"

I work in a NC home health branch and was hired in November of 2019.   I have 10 years of experience in home health working both the field and clinical manager office positrons. I was previously a home health DON for an agency in the panhandle. My biggest issue with this company is the “top down” and spreadsheet culture. This means direction comes from the powers above who are out of touch with what goes on at the branch level.  There are spreadsheets for spreadsheets and expectations that said spreadsheets and repetitive tasks be done without question. Never mind there is a faster, cheaper and more efficient way to achieve the same objective they want.- it must be done the long complicated way because “that’s policy”. Corporate creates complicated metrics that are monitored that do nothing for the overall goals. Example- there is no reason to create a spreadsheet to be emailed around to 25 people containing patients who are on a service hold. That is already done DAILY by the clinical manager AND the scheduler. Why on earth are we wasting a 3rd persons time in central intake by having them do it too?  Spreadsheets are made, updated, and emailed around with daily admission info- again a simple report that our EMR creates with a few clicks. Instead we print that report out and manually transfer the EXACT SAME data into excel to be “sent up” some of this data entry nonsense takes an hour or more. You are paying me a lot of money to be a data entry clerk. When I could be doing skilled clinical management tasks. Just Email the report from the EMR and save productivity time and subsequently a lot of money.  Corporate’s nonsense is costing them millions. Be open to feedback from the people doing these types of silly tasks. They know how to get it done quicker, cheaper, and within all guidelines needed. There needs to be a culture shift soon. 

Work-life balance
Sales reps are expected to be available 24/7. While the ability to create your own daily schedule is nice, the shorter days are definitely outweighed by the late night calls and weekend work to handle incoming referrals and other things

Pay & benefits
Benefits are really expensive and the health insurance is pretty awful. Doesn’t cover much of anything.

Management
Management only cares about the numbers from the sales team. Subpar patient care and mistakes on operations side go unnoticed or brushed under the rug but if your 1 referral short for the week/month the sales team is drilled for it. Expected to sell a service where quality scores are dropping rapidly and anytime issues are brought to managers attention you’re told to stay in your lane basically.

Culture
All that matters is numbers... How many referrals you get and how much money you can bring in for the company. Don’t complain or comment on issues with patient care or anything on operations team because they don’t care and just want you to bring in referrals

Overall
A year or so this company truly cared about patients and put their care first. Over time it has become clear that patient care comes second to getting enough referrals in the door. It’s so difficult to sell a service where quality scores are dropping drastically. Whenever issues are brought to light about issues with clinicians or operations teams you basically get told to stay in your lane and just bring in referrals. There’s no room for career advancement in the sales role here. It’s sad because it used to be easy to sell quality patient care but the cracks are getting bigger and bigger everyday and selling this company gets harder when patients in the community have growing complaints. There is so much clinician turnover it’s hard to keep up with who is seeing patients and what employees are even on your team

But no that was not good enough.  I was expected to have no life. 

At first, it was good.  They let me build up hours.  And I was very much a self starter.  They never took my training paperwork.  Just gave me some training with a good RN, then let me go.  I did not mind this because I a self starter.  And I eventually worked up to 33 points a week.  Finished my SOC and charting day off.   Was very productive.
If I didn’t take whatever they threw at me while I was in the field, I was complained to.  The “RNs” in the office have so many Quiet times during their day, that to call in report is impossible!  I’m in the field alone unless it’s Quiet time in the office.  
My last week. I did 44 points, I was told I had to score 30 points a week for full time.

I worked 44 hours, drove 402 miles!  It still wasn’t good enough! My boss was angry I wouldn’t take more patients on the 8th day in a row she forced me to work!  Because they get all these SOCs, and LPN calls off all the time.  So send RN visit, on top of their other visits.
I asked for flextime for the extra hours , and they seemed surprised.  Was told nurses usually don’t take flextime by another nurse.  It’s not encouraged.  

And the constant push for SOCs, but not enough LPN or staff to make visits!  Unsafe!
I was very heartsick leave.  Because I liked my patients and the LPNs I worked with. Because if they had just stuck to the 5 to7 points daily, I would of been fine!  But no! 

Biggest disappointment since I returned to Florida.

Pretty sad I was in a job I was enjoying, and had to quit because I Could not safely do more than 35 points a week.

The company managers I are 2-faced and you must be careful.  Employees are often misled with empty promises, hand shakes or verbal agreements mean nothing.  You will often see a manager switch from email or text to a phone call so that nothing is documented when they are being shady.  They will use people like slaves, work you to death when they need you and send you home when they dont.  Manager would micromanage for productivity and have no value to the patients or therapists. Forget about a raise so negotiate high at interview.  And your hours are dependent on case load.  I was hired as a FT employee but averaged 18-30 hrs a week.  Some weeks were as low as 2-3 hours.  Poor management by local Office and Regional Managers. Zero Marketing, and No appreciation for employees or their patients.  Samples of Racial preferences from Office manager and closed minded prejudices from Regional Manager.  Both were closed minded to recommendations based on your position in Company...Advice flows down, not up dispite experience and/or education.  

Know your Employee Rights as well as Medicare and PT license regulations since this company Likes to overlook them.  I had to report company to PTBC and CMS as a whistle blower.   And monitor your paychecks, PTO, worked hours, etc as somehow adjustments are made.  And unusual activity at corporate level as well as tax identities, etc are multiple and with some agencies, unknown.  I never figured out this, but I think it's that theres so many changes with the company that government agencies cant keep up. 

Definitely the worst company/experience I ever worked for.  I should of trusted my instincts, but gave these people too much of a benefit.   Buyer Beware

The management was unconcerned about patient care my patients were missed for over a week of visits. The office was more concerned about their own power over the field staff and trying to ensure that field staff knew that they inferior to them. There was a lot of scapegoating when the office screwed something up such as caring for patients and scheduling. There was favoritism. Admissions were given to only those they deemed Worthy. Charting was redundant and took hours. The pay was not worth the work. You got .9 points for one visit which is fine if you don't take care of your patients check their Vital Signs contact their doctors, however if you did care the time it took to do the visit the paperwork and communication was much more work than 0.9 pts. Management talks about documenting and teaching yet when looking at their visits that they may have formed in the field there was no teaching very little documentation. If you did an admission, recert, roc, you can expect to get it back to perform Corrections in 2 to 4 weeks. Then office management wants it back the day they send it back to you within a couple hours when you're out in the field working with patients. They have too many people working in the office and one hand doesn't know what the other hand is doing. You don't make enough money for the hours you put in and you can't supplement those hours with a part-time or PRN job because you too busy on the computer. All the office personnel, are Buddies.
