A typical day at work -

High stress, low motivation due to poor, management,  low morale, disorganised, unsupported, a counselling service - but not counselling due to 100's of policies and procedures which are impossible to stay within the constraints of due to overlapping and lack clarity. Then when you don't meet the unworkable constraints you are pulled in for meetings with the awful HR department who don't have a clue about the BACP framework all counsellors should be adhering too.

what you believe you learned - Absolutely nothing,  in fact the opposite.  Kooth drained all my self worth, confidence and tried to force me into counselling theory that went against practice. This left me feeling low, depressed and anxious on a daily basis. 

management - Upper management don't listen,  or rather cover their ears.  Middle management are power hungry and their ethos seems to be that they are above all the hard workers on service delivery , flexing their position by micromanaging, giving contradictory information and being under qualified.

workplace culture - Toxic, undervalued and judgemental. The only staff that are genuine are those on service delivery who seem to do everyone's job, work excessively and end up being ill because of this. 

the hardest part of the job - All of it. You are constantly on the phone to multiple services, often  due to ungenuine service users who cannot be traced due to lack of IP addresses.

the most enjoyable part of the job - Absolutely nothing.  Actually,  logging off at the end of a shift. 


I was really interested in working for Kooth after hearing first hand from young people I had worked with how much of an impact Kooth had on them in a positive way. This made me go and learn more about the service and I became really interested in applying to work for Kooth as I was interested in the online nature of the support that young people can receive. 

I like the ability to be home based, but that I never feel isolated. I have a supportive team around me and I like that my experience and ideas are welcomed as the organisation looks to grow and support both staff and service users more holistically. The senior management team, especially the CEO and COO are really committed to promoting the values of the organisation and have been taking the time to get to know service delivery staff better and to understand what are important issues on the ground. 

My advice to any experienced practitioners, from a range of relevant backgrounds is to consider coming to Kooth. I really value the breadth of experience across all of the practitioners and members of the wider Kooth team and have learnt from all of my colleagues and continue to value the experience and knowledge of those around me.

Kooth is a supportive, forward thinking work place with great values and ethos.  Opportunity to work with a great team, who are dedicated to the mental health and wellbeing of service users.  I was attracted to the role as it fits into my other work roles, and it is home working.  They provided great initial training, and all the equipment needed to work from home.  I really enjoy the work, as the company are committed to their staff, in supporting young people and adults with their mental health and wellbeing.  Full training is giving and this is ongoing throughout the year.  There are so many CPD opportunities.  I really appreciate how valued the management make staff feel, which brings the whole team together - which can sometimes be difficult for online companies to do.  The Kooth management team get this really right.  
If you are passionate about working with young people and adults, and supporting their mental health and wellbeing; and are looking for a company who invest in you, and genuinely support their staff, then Kooth is the place for you!

The work-life balance is a complete no-go as you’re working such long hours, mainly from 2- 10 pm with a 20-minute food break in between. You are expected to hit a good number of KPIs within those working hours and if you don't achieve this it will be pulled up by managers to improve which is degrading in itself. What Kooth lack in understanding is that this is a high-pressure job role and as counselling practitioners, it is not normal to work back-to-back with clients this way and follow KPIs (well not in my career anyway). You are made to feel like a robot! You are also MADE to take on high-risk clients into your caseloads without any options and very little warning to reduce waiting times and structured support sessions.  I was completely unprepared for what I was walking into in this role, they say they are not a crisis service but they most definitely are - be warned!  
Any person who has family commitments or does not enjoy working long hours I seriously would consider this role before working for Kooth. Never have I left a counselling role and felt so bad about my own mental health and overall well-being. 

Kooth is great, there is a real sense of community in house and all management feel approachable and inclusive to the team. I feel valued at Kooth and that my ideas are heard, even if they can't always be carried forward. The job allows me to challenge my engagement strategies and utilise my work experience to date in engaging young people and professionals which is what I love. My manager is so supportive and whilst I would like to see an option to progress that is linked to my role, I do believe that Kooth is a place I want to stay and see what progress opportunities arise. I have learned so much in this role from colleagues and the training they offer is beneficial and meaningful with the addition of extra training outside of the mandatory schedule. I haven't quite reached my potential in the company with all my thoughts and ideas BUT I want to hang around to get there and that is what makes Kooth plc a fab organisation to work for and I have worked for a few!

For those who are self-starters & are passionate about the mental health of the youth of today & tomorrow then this job is for you. You clock in & go through a checklist of ways to show that you are online & ready to work. Go over your chat schedule to ensure you have set alarms & check emails to make sure there are no updates from your previous shift. This is exactly what California as well as other states have needed for decades now. I'm ecstatic to be a part of this movement towards a better future for our children & the youth we serve. Worst part of the job is doing crisis intervention & deescalation when that isnt even close to what the app is intended for. Thankfully that has changed, but it has left so many of us conflicted. I am ready for the change! The work culture is just amazing & Im noticing more integration throughout all the teams mingling & getting to know each other on a personal level. Such an awesome team!!

Working online for Kooth is challenging and involves working with a lot of risk a bit like childline but text based.
There is a lot of senior management who are very well paid and also the technical teams are paid appropriately. I do this work because it fits in with my child care but will leave as soon as I can. The company does not honour its frontline staff - it recently benchmarked its salaries with NHS banding’s failing to realise that NHS pay is balanced by conditions of service- you can’t have one without the other. The conditions of service for the lower paid frontline staff are terrible.
2 weeks sick pay so you can’t afford to take time off even if you are unwell (that’s the worst) it is old fashioned in its approach to management of h is gy qualified staff
It serves a purpose for me in the short term but I will be looking elsewhere when I can

I’ve found working at Kooth absolutely great! Everyone is so supportive and there’s a real sense of community even though we’re all based across the country. At the moment there’s multiple wellbeing programmes happening within the organisation and it’s really lovely to see. I feel incredibly valued at Kooth and that all of my ideas are heard and listened to by other members of my team and also by management. I have also learnt so much since joining Kooth, and there are multiple training options and support available, and I really do feel as if this role challenges me everyday which I love. No two days are ever the same! I don’t feel as if I’ve reached my potential in the organisation yet, and I’m so excited to see what it looks like when I do. Really do recommend Kooth as an employer! 


Kooth do not support the wellbeing of their staff and is a very high pressured, highly stressful job with no autonomy or support to promote staff welfare. There is an undercurrent sub culture  of bullying and intimidation towards anyone who speaks their mind. 
There are extremely rigid KPIs that staff have to meet regardless of whether it is safe for us to do so & the outcome of these affect salary and progression. Home /work life balance is near impossible because of the constant meetings and emails. Salary is poor compared to the increases in cost of living and other similar companies.

I was sceptical of working from home but I am so glad I went for it. Love Kooth values and the work done with young people, Proud to work for Kooth! It can be a busy place to work but no two days are the same which I find is what keeps me interested. The training provided is exceptional and the support from the teams and management are great. The culture is one that puts Young people at the heart of everything we do and the expertise in the team and their passion shine through. I am so glad I made the leap, I love my job :)
