This is not the beloved Children's Hospital of New Orleans. Over the years at the Children's Hospital of LCMC, leadership has gone from bad to worse. They are very good at walking the fine line of what is technically legal while abusing staff. Leadership are made up of friends. They find anything at all to give ongoing negative critique to employees to crush their spirits, limit merit increases, and or find ways to fire them if they feel threatened by those seasoned and experienced. No common sense at all. What was previously low morale became no morale.

Cafeteria food used to be delicious, lovingly cooked by locals with local flavors. Often employees would buy extra plates for dinner. Now it is out-sourced to a northern chain, clueless to the culinary tastes of locals even though they receive tons of suggestions. They think lots of salt and pepper equals well seasoned food, no flavor-just lots of salt and pepper. Bring your own if you end up here. Not only does it taste poorly, you end up feeling bad, especially if you work weekends where they see what's leftover, which at times should have been thrown away.

No room for advancement. Poor pay. Poor benefits, and a worse Benefits Dept ever. From start of day to end, it's rush rush rush, no opportunity to just take a break to breathe. Every minute is regimented and scrutinized, stalkers and spies are some of the coworkers. No venting allowed or you'll be told on.

And if you are ill or injured, you get threatened with job loss. There is no 'light duty' unless you're special.

Best day there was my last day!

In the beginning, the job was great. It felt like it was where I belonged. After 3 months, it turned into a nightmare due to a condescending and controlling manager messing people over on the schedule. A typical day was busy with call lights ringing and new admits arriving. The easy part of the job was vitals, blood sugars. The hardest part of the job was answering multiple call lights while the nurses just sat nearby not helping , giving CHG baths with little to no linen, collaborating with other techs to create a balanced schedule just for it to be completed rearranged and screwed over by managers with no explanation, working on a unit of 16 by yourself several days in a row with no help from nurses so rounds would take extremely long to complete, family members congregating in the patients room to where you can’t get to the patient to do your job, staffing pulling you from your unit to unit and/or calling you off for your entire shift and/or pushing your scheduled time back for your shift leaving you on standby. Workplace culture was very messy and confrontational. 

The management team for my
department is generally approachable and supportive, which I do appreciate. However, there are several ongoing issues that make the work environment challenging.

One major concern is the lack of flexibility in scheduling. Although I consistently work part-time hours, the department only offers full-time or PRN positions and has not been willing to accommodate a formal part-time role. This creates unnecessary limitations for staff who are already functioning in that capacity.

There are also noticeable disparities in facility investment. While other floors and departments have received significant updates and renovations, my unit has not been remodeled despite clear need. This contributes to a feeling of being overlooked and impacts day-to-day working conditions.

Additionally, turnover in all our critical care departments appears to be high. This often results in heavy reliance on agency staff, which can affect team consistency and overall workflow.

Overall, while there are some positives, particularly with management, the lack of flexibility, uneven resource allocation, and staffing instability make it a difficult place to work long-term.

Provided enterprise-level support in a large healthcare environment, supporting critical systems and end users across multiple facilities.

Gained experience working with Epic systems, identity management, and large-scale deployments including domain migrations and system standardization efforts.

Role required strong troubleshooting, communication, and coordination across technical teams and clinical staff in a high-availability, mission-critical environment.

Helping the patients in that community - it is a very loyal local population that trust and entrust their lives to the care of healthcare professionals-

The company was going thru a major merger so many times you find yourself mix in the shuffle of changes -

Most of the staff have worked in this particular facility for many years-many members are almost like a big family,  and many are used and set in their ways at approaching multiple processes- so, as in any facility with that culture,  there are  pros and cons to that work environment scenario .

Go with an open mind , focus on the task at hand, deliver care in the most effective and timely way- always in a  caring and most respectful way to others

The work can be meaningful because you are part of a system that serves the New Orleans community, and there are opportunities to learn a lot depending on your department and manager. Like many large healthcare organizations, the workload can get heavy, communication can vary by location, and staffing levels may not always match the demand. Pay and advancement can also depend heavily on the specific role. That said, the experience can be valuable, especially for someone trying to build a career in healthcare administration, patient access, clinical support, or operations. I am in a customer service  support as a help desk technician which makes my day different form stressful if any of the application goes down that creates a problem for patient care to a calm day when user just forgets their password which is more than 50% of the time.  The telephone rings constantly which makes the day goes fast.  The only problem is when you are trying to work and Active directory which takes your undivided attention and you constantly gets telephone calls and you have to stop to address an issue.  So pretty much you have to be able to multi-task at any given time.   Really this is not a hard job so i cannot describe the hardest part.  When the servers crash and the users can't login and everyone is frustrated and calming everyone now maybe a little challenging.

I really enjoy my job so i really wouldn't call it stressful but challenging is a better word and/or description.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Your job is your second home. It's less stress when you are appreciated and recognized for what you do. Also, when the environment is over all comfortable 
and your co-workers are like your second family makes it easier. I believe every department should have huddles and incentives like employee of the month which LCMC practice.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Not being able to always be effective at your job by lack of supplies, or not being able to help every patient that comes through the door. Sometimes coworkers are stressed and don't realize it may affect other employees and patients.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Great company with a lot of room to grow. It also is a teaching facility so you can advance  if you desire.

A typical day involved preparing and processing various tissue specimens, including surgical, frozen, and autopsy samples, while maintaining lab quality standards. I learned to work independently, troubleshoot technical issues, and manage time efficiently. Management was supportive and professional, providing clear expectations. The workplace culture was friendly, respectful, and collaborative—everyone helped each other. The hardest part of the job was maintaining speed without compromising precision during high-volume days. The most enjoyable part was being trusted to run the lab and feeling valued by both colleagues and supervisors.
