I worked for LearnWell for around 9 months. I honestly had a great time and enjoyed what I was doing. However, I got attacked by a student in my 6th month there. It was a pretty severe attack and my manager (the best I’ve ever had) did offer for me to go home for the day but I stayed. From then on I felt the hospital higher ups did not respect, value, or care about me much at all. As a teacher for LearnWell you are NOT safety care trained - meaning you are not taught how to defend yourself against attacks or how to put students in restraints (which can happen multiple times a day). I felt completely unsafe in that environment and the hospital did not care that I felt that way. 

All of this is to say that if you get into a good hospital/ facility, you will have a great time at this company. LearnWell seems to mostly care about their employees (issues with PTO and snow days are annoying) and you have complete freedom with your teaching (besides hospital restrictions). It can be a challenging and very rewarding environment that I would recommend to anyone willing to accept the risks (high risk of a traumatic event).

A typical day at Learnwell:

Arrive sometime between 7:30-8:00.

Enter building and pass through hallway where intake patients are sitting in a small room or in the hallway itself. They are locked in and your job is to let yourself in with your card and make it out the other door without letting them escape. No security person in the building. 

8:00 Check emails, take care of billing paperwork, make copies for the day's classes. 

8:10 Pretend to look busy

3 one hour "classes": Students are marched down to classroom or you go down to the ward. Some are dressed, some are in paper scrubs, all are there for trauma, no one there is in the headspace to "learn".  Techs sit in the back of the room and will NOT assist in classroom management or assist the kids on their work. Often times, they will talk over you as you are trying to teach. 

After the kids leave, they throw away their work without even looking at it. 

Constant "code green" being called which means all hands on deck because someone was trying to escape or was flipping out. Sometimes the code is coming from your room. 

Day ends at 4:30 PM. Because no one is onsite and low morale, LearnWell employees leave as early as 3:00. 



I've never felt like I was meant to do something more than I do at my job. I'll give one down-side to the job first: the pay is not very high. (But teachers don't typically go into the profession because it's a high paying job, am I right?)
Every site is different, but at my hospital my coworkers and I work really well as a team. It is such a unique experience given the population that I work with. LearnWell allows me to be creative and do what I feel is best for my students but also provides me emotional and physical support every day. My manager makes it clear that she is there for me every day and shows that she cares. The hospital staff are also really friendly. We are able to work as a team in and out of the classroom. It can be emotionally/mentally taxing. You see and hear children from the ages of 5-18 struggling every day on the job, but that makes me a more humble, open-minded, and empathic person. I would recommend this job to anyone in the field of education that is willing to go out of their comfort zone and work with a high-needs population. It is such an awarding job and you will never feel unsupported. I plan to stay with this company for as long as possible.

If you're looking for a growing company, LearnWell is a great option.  

Here's a couple of observations that I've made:

1.  Internal promotions
I have only seen promotions from within (so far) at every level.  Teachers become Associate Managers, Regional Directors, etc.  Therapists become supervisors too.

2.  Flexibility/Trust
Managers seem to simply trust their employees.  The company works remotely and we have clear goals.  I complete my tasks and my manager seems happy with my progress.  It's that simple.

3.   Transparent
I was surprised when I first started, the COO gave me an introduction that involved some revenue expectations, goals, and even where we need to improve.  This may sound basic but most companies don't give that type of transparent outlook to their employees (NOTE:  I'm not even a manager).  This is important because it gives the employees a clear sense of what we are all trying to achieve as a team.




The job, working with adolescents with mental health issues is about what I expected. What came as a pleasant surprise was the level of cohesiveness and support thecompany’s management creates for all the different hospital sites. They have group phone calls and video check-ins twice a week and every week all 50 teachers at different sites in the “region” send out a Weekly Reflection, a quick email describing the highlights of each teachers week, the things they want to work on doing better, the lessons they are using and how they are working out. All this information is remarkably useful to help get a sense of how work at your site compares to others, to learn from other teachers’ experiences, to gather suggestions for activities that work well with this difficult population, and most of all to feel part of a group of dedicated colleagues and an accessible , caring management staff: something you rarely  get teaching in schools.

The day to day is easy. Plan lessons, logging things into the computer.. but when it comes to the staff (that isn’t a part of LearnWell) they are just so cold and standoffish. Another teacher and i had a student who was in crisis and the therapist sent them BACK into the classroom. The rest of the day was difficult to get through due to the lack of help. They treat the kids like they’re in a prison. No bathroom except during the only designated hour. Can’t even get up to get water. God forbid they eat a snack before break. The ONLY perk is the flexibility and simplicity in the job. Trust, I can go on.. but they’re not even worth the essay. 
  
The cons:
Unfriendly staff 
Incompetent/naieve teacher 
You can sense the fakeness from day 1
Site Manager isn’t approachable in the slightest 
Therapist get upset over petty small things 
No support from staff (site staff)

Let me clear: LEARNWELL ISNT THE PROBLEM. it’s the SITE and THEIR staff. 

Learnwell is a great employer if you are a teacher wanting to leave the classroom. They are understanding when it comes to burnout. The interview process is thorough and they make you feel comfortable. It took about a month to complete the interview process and onboarding. There are slow periods where you will not get much work so this is only for those looking for flexible part time work. If you are wanting more stable hours, it may not be the job for you. However, it works great with other part time positions as there is a lot of flexibility.  So it works out great for me! During busy periods, you could have a full schedule (30 hours). It really depends. The management team responds to emails quickly and are always available for support.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Since I'm dealing with adolescents, sometimes their emotions can cause stress for me, but I have been trained for these situations by LearnWell, and I can always reach out for immediate help.

Professional and relaxed; courteous; friendly; helpful; patient; compassionate

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
In person or online, I work with teenagers. Hours depend.

LearnWell is a rapidly growing company that serves populations in need. Each day is unique and busy. They frequently promote from within and I have witnessed so many teachers have better work/life balance after retiring or leaving the public school. If you are looking to truly teach and not have to teach inside a box, LearnWell is the place for you. There is no better feeling than knowing you have made an impact on a population who truly needs it. 

They are a wonderful company – but your position could fluctuate from full-time to part-time. I really enjoyed my position-I was the only teacher – so it could get lonely- but the company itself was fantastic.  My supervisor was terrific and honest. The behavioral health center contracts out the position to them -the number of students can cause your position to fluctuate year to year- especially if new -but if you want a part time position and still be able to teach -this is the job for you- co-workers are awesome! I took a new job because I needed full-time.
