I am an honored member of the Maimonides Medical Center team of Recreational Assistants in the children's department. It is a prestigious position, and I am proud to be one of this amazing team.

A typical day at the hospital in my department is quite fast paced and full of things to do. It includes visiting with patients in their rooms and performing one-on-one sessions at their bedside, just to talk or play a game. This helps the child take their mind off the pain and worry they may be experiencing. In addition, we staff the playroom where patients can come and play, or select a toy/game to take back to their room. At the end of the day, it is our responsibility to clean the toys in a proper fashion in a safe way.

The management is very connected to the employees and volunteers, and we know that there is always someone to turn to when we have a question or concern. The staff is really culturally diverse, which is a huge plus and a great benefit, as it helps to prepare us for what the real world out there is all about.

The hardest part of the job sometimes, is seeing the young children in pain or crying, with their weak bodies and big eyes... But it is at those moments when we are most needed. We are taught to separate our emotions and to behave proactively, jumping in to save a child from pain and to help him or her through the tough experience. And doing that is definitely the very best part of being on the Maimonides Medical Center team of Recreational Assistants.

Horrible. Almost everyone I worked with left. I ended up in the ER during my shift with an anxiety,high BP,high HR and abnormal EKG. Even only thinking about work, working short staffed and constantly floating to other units to take 8 pts and a charge , because there was no regular staff  ,was giving me palpitations. I was forced to resign a month after my ER visit to have a better life. In MMC , there is no support from the management. Why did I last for so long? Because of my single parent situation, health insurance and because I believed things would get better, like they promised year after year.  I didn't know that work shouldn't be like that. I didn't want to believe that it was an abuse. I heard that it was bad like that in all the hospitals. I started believing that nursing job required you to be stressed and unhappy. We had no secretary on the floor and no phlebotomist for 4 years. Nurses were supposed to do their work for free. Usually, only 3 nurses were covering the unit where we had 20 bedbound, vented patients. If you are super lucky, you get 4 RNs. There was 1 nurse's aide for the unit. Now, I feel like I was hypnotized and finally, I woke up. It feels like it was a bad dream. I believe have a PTSD. Done with hospitals. It's better to mop the floor for a minimum wage, with a nursing degree than to work like I did as a nurse there, even if they pay me a million. 

A typical day at work is filled with filing, answering phones, being attentive to patients that come up to the window, being a liaison between them and the doctors, data entry to ensure that we have all correct information regarding patient demographics, etc.  I learned how to handle critical situations and handle them on my own without the assistance of the manager or any of the staff, but I also learned how and when to direct the situation to another member of my team when I am unsure of the solution to the problem presented in front of me; ensuring that the problem is taken care of in the most effective manner.  Management could be a little more supportive as we have limited staff that run the office, but the overall workplace culture is friendly.  The hardest part of the job would be the last minute schedule changes that we are to adhere to in order to support the Doctors, then that means we have to change around our personal schedules as well and those of the patients; which can be frustrating on both ends.  Overall, the most enjoyable part of my job is when a patient expresses an immense amount of gratitude towards my patience and understanding when I aid in their inquires as if they were my own.  I believe is sets me apart from others and creates a stronger a patient to staff  relationship.

New York Community Hospital is a small facility where nursing and auxillary staff work closely together. All materials needed for job completion is always close at hand. My colleagues and I take the care of our clients very seriously. At the begining of every assignment, each patient is assessed, and immediate needs are adressed. During the shift,focus assessement are perform every two hours.We love taking care of our patient's needs in a timely manner, because when they are satsified our job becomes much more enjoyable.
Registered nurses work side by side with PCAs and Nurses Aids. They willingly provide guided skills practic oppurtunities, and inspiration to those who wants to advance their career. This is testement of how I develop my nursing skills.The hardest part of the job is having a dissatified client.
Lunch time at Community Hospital is usually a joyous ocassion. The Cafeteria serves free lunch, coffee, and tea. Here, a venue is provided for social conversation with collegues.
On the downside Community Hospital offers little or no oppurtunites for entry level Nurses.One of the reason being it is not a teaching hospital. Other than that, New York Community is a great place to work.

Pros: Friendly and helpful team members,  most of the people you dealt with are nice and respectful. Won’t expect phone calls after work since other people will be working in night shifts. A good place to start for work to get experiences. Offers 4 weeks of paid vocations. 

Cons: Insurance is terrible since the IT department is not in the union. Doesn’t allow even 1 minute late to your shift start time, come in early to your shift time is the only option. Some people could be annoying where they will call you to come over for not knowing how to turn on the computer/monitor by pressing the power button. No matter how well and how much you performed on your work, you will not get your chance to be promoted. The manager is micromanaging everything, easily angered, nitpicking, and doesn’t appreciate your work. Job distribution is not fair: the new comer does the most work and will get the most blames. Tons of unwritten rules that you must follow here as they do not have the patience to speak with you nicely the second time when you violated it. Politics is all around between different teams, be watch out when dealing with other team members, they are alway the pain in the neck when you asking them to do something.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I found quite a few inspiring people who made the work day go smoother. I felt accomplished for all the work I put in when supplies were low or scarce, equipment went unrepaird and unavailable, and staffing was subpar.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Never an adequate supply of cooling and heating. Rarely having blankets, diapers, blood collection vials, chux or gowns. 
Sometimes the electricity would go out on units with no corrections until the morning staff did something about it. Water supplied were cut off at times for maintenance upwards of 7 hours. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
There is a considerable amount of juvenile clique behavior and prejudice both cultural and linguistically among those who are undereducated, feeling entitled and are lazy. 

There are also many, many people who make the job a great experience, however it's important to bring the sunshine even though the overall mood and dirtiest of this place can bring you down to its level. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Rewarding. Busy. Frustrating. Motivating.

A typical day includes visiting patients, reading them their rights as a patient. Document any complaints, Data entry, assist patients in areas where they may need help and retrieve items for them that was put away in storage.

I learned how to navigate the base of Maimonides computer system. I also learned how to balance my relationship between the patients and nursing staff.

I was not too familiar with the management but from my first impression it was ok.

My co-workers were warm and friendly and very helpful when I didn't understand something in particular or getting familiar with the hospital environment.

The hardest part of the job is when things are slow and there isn't much to be done. In that instance I get bored

The most enjoyable part of the job is when I put a smile on the patients and co-workers face for doing a good job. When I recieve a thankyou, I know that I'm doing my job.

A typical workday involves quite a few meetings with clinical and front-line staff to discuss status of current initiatives, potential issues that warrant investigation, frequent web conferences with outside agencies, data analysis etc. My professional growth centers around strategic planning, leadership development, motivational skills, innovation, and advanced project management. My co-workers are highly intelligent professionals who are invested in improving quality and patient safety. Senior medical and nursing leadership are actively involved in the majority of performance improvement projects. The most difficult aspects of the job are related to limited resources due to financial challenges. The most enjoyable part of the job is recognizing that you have made a difference in patients lives by implementing processes that enhance quality care delivery, patient safety,and improve the patient and family experience.

Maimonides Medical center is very business oriented. The focus is to get the patients out as soon as possible. I begin my day at 7, it is  very busy. I am always on the go and hardly ever sit down. We are always in constant communication with the staff. There are biweekly meetings and management encourages continuing education. My co-workers are amazing, educated workers. We realize that in order to accomplish our work we must all work together and my co-workers do that very well. The hardest part of the job is to care for the extremely ill patient. Sometimes there is a time sensitive situation and one must balance the care for these patients and prevent them from dying while caring for the other patients. The best part of the job is communicating to my patients. I love listening to their stories and enjoy learning about people. People in general are fascinating to me. By the time my patients are discharged, I feel very close to them and miss them. Every patient touches my heart

My typical day at work was very flexible I have all was been a hard worker who is unafraid to get dirty and put in extra hours or shifts. One day I might have opened at 4:30 am to set up everyones work station and make sure everything was operational. Another day or the same day I might have stayed and provided hand to hand meals for patients or even did the lowest but most valuable job of washing cooking utensils and equipment. Management was great I was promoted with in fast for my efforts and hours and they always let me know I was a valued team member. The hardest part of the job was only something i had to learn then it be came easy  which was Jewish culture I had never work directly with the Hasidic Jewish community before. The job became more enjoyable with the diversity I learned cooking and cleaning were seconded nature as in high school I wanted to be a chef.
