This is my first job as a PA out of grad school. I love the variety of urgent care and the ability to use the full scope of my skill-set, without the high stakes or risk of ER work. The 12 hr shifts are long, but I prefer working 7/14 days with 12 hour shifts than a typical 8-5 every week. Coworkers and on-boarding staff have all been wonderful. Manager and regional manager are excellent and helpful. Pay is hourly and sign on bonus was nice as well. Incentive bonuses are a nice touch, but can be difficult to meet all the criteria to get them. Offices are staffed with 1 provider and 2 MAs at a time. Working independently is something I value a lot, being able to make all the calls has been a perk for me. And there are always providers on call for any issues and office manager responds quickly for the most part. Biggest downside is the check-in process which is all digital, no front desk or billing staff in person and no real training. Luckily I am tech savvy and was able to pick it up quick but frequently have to help patients get checked in and put out fires when people get frustrated with check in. There is a lot more to this job than just clinical work, including relational skills with patients, training inexperienced MAs, putting out fires, tech, billing, and insurance work. But as a new grad with no experience I was able to pick everything up and am comfortable working here now.  MSKS is desperate for providers so they will put in the effort to hire staff and keep providers happy, don't be afraid to ask for a larger sign on bonus, relocation assistance, whatever you need. Contract is 2 years with 6 month notice before leaving and PTO requires 3 month notice, which is a downside but the schedule makes it easy to get a whole week off if needed. Overall would recommend if you are looking for a place to practice independently how you want and use a large array of skills with all patient populations.

Pros: Hourly pay with incentives, overtime bonus, travel reimbursement and sign on bonus, independent practice, ability to use all skills, DOT certification, great experience, most staff are friendly and reasonable. 

Cons: Pay is lower if you don't meet incentives, long commitment, difficult to get PTO, lots of non clinical work, must be tech savvy or learn to be, inexperienced MAs. 

The job is just ok overall. The pay and work schedule are good. You have helpful on-call staff (NP or physician) to call anytime you need help. It's a good job to have to gain experience right out of NP school. 

Downsides: Overall, the company doesn't care about you as a person. Money (patient volume) comes 1st. You're expected to sign a contract that threatens you with them contacting the board of nursing or you paying thousands of dollars for breaking it. Staff is expected to work no matter the conditions, plumbing issues for weeks, power outage (paper charting). You're expected to work your tail off.  I know we're held to a higher standard but if you're very sick or need to be hospitalized , you're still expected to work or find your own coverage for your shift. You'll be made to feel guilty if you don't. The NPs at some of the busier clinics (Pelham, Montgomery, Millbrook) might see as many as 50+ patients a day & be the only NP there. Your team might be good or bad. Some of the medical assistants are great & some are lazy & should've been fired but get to keep their jobs, making things difficult for everyone else. Xrays are done by medical assistants with no medical background (most of them). The xrays are often "limited" because parts are cut off or artifacts such as bracelets, belts are left on the patient. Clinical managers aren't very helpful; expect attitude or excuses most of the time.  You're expected to do telehealth for some of the other clinics in addition to seeing patients at your clinic. You're not asked, but told to do it. It's not as bad if your clinic isn't that busy, but a lot to manage if your clinic is. You're asked to work extra shifts on your off days but can decline. You're expected to add extra tests, meds, & labs to get your bonuses. No place is perfect but weigh the pros and cons before coming. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
The care the company projects to the patients and includes the staff as well—
They provided training at their headquarters in Birmingham Alabama for 2 days for Providers and MA -I don’t know the training days for them
The ability to basically run your own clinic / urgent care with tremendous support from an on call system starting with experienced NPsPAs 
To the Doctor on call to the Medical Director- all are knowledgeable and great teachers 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Learning the computer -system is logical but there is a learning curve which comes with working. 


What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The company has a nicely structured chain of command but it does not feel like the corporate management style as it seems like your family or friends are in these positions.
The MAs are eager to learn from the providers and peers.
Nicely integrated providers NPs and PAs - good teachers and mentors for new hires no matter what ones experience level joining the company.
I felt welcomed and supported and that seems to be true of my training colleagues at Headquarters.
I feel the company does a great job of screening their applicants. Additionally training them and a nice package to retain them. 


What is a typical day like for you at the company?
The usual fire up the computer a few minutes before seeing patients- looking over the inventory-supplies etc.
Then getting ready for the urgent care typical work- it maybe very busy to not as busy as a bus load coming in at one time.
There is an added plus of x rays in house and there is a radiologist reading every film.
We see the typical urgent care illnesses and injuries.

Upon being hired you are made to feel that you are apart of a family. Once you get in and work for a couple of months, you realize that you are just another warm body to fill a position. Do not ever get sick. They are the least understanding in that situation. They are ALWAYS short staffed. Management lies to you about getting you help in the clinic to help. They have unrealistic expectations about getting your weekly inventory completed by 11 am during a busy flu season. Most of the time in the "smaller" clinics there are only a provider and two medical assistants. During flu season you can see 50+ patients a day. You are still expected to complete inventory by said time. They will not approve you to come in early to get it done either. Then you get yelled at and threatened to be written up if you can't get it in in that time frame. Most management staff come into the clinic to criticize your every move. When you are busy and need a little helping hand they sit on their tails and watch you bust yours. Heaven help if someone in your immediate family dies. You are responsible for your shift, even if that means missing the funeral to be at work. I thought I was going to be able to make a great career working here, but I was so wrong. Also, they pump you up about making bonus every month. Well, they are constantly changing things to make it nearly impossible to make that bonus. You are also expected to sell a certain amount of pre-packed prescription medications. You are threatened with disciplinary action if you don't meet that amount weekly. Only thing I can suggest is if you like being constantly criticized and talked down to and belittled, then this is the place for you! If not RUN AWAY, RUN FAR AWAY!

As a revenue cycle specialist don't expect to ever feel caught up. There are too many denials for the two RCS to ever catch up on. You will be writing some off for timely filing especially having to answer the phone every three minutes. You work a rotating schedule so usually it is just you and a coder so the influx of calls can delay you from getting a lot of daily work done. The management understands this is a concern and hired someone else to help Mon-Fri to answer the phones but sometimes that is still not enough staff for the phones. Don't forget collection calls on Mondays~ you definitely won't get a lot done while these are going on but management tries to do these calls at the end of the day and typically they only last 1 hour to 1.5 hours. 

I say reliable because there is always work to be done and every now and then overtime opportunities to reach certain goals set by upper management. 

The PTO is accrued per paycheck and is a percentage based off the amount of time worked per pay period. Due to you working 10 hour days, the 40 hours of PTO per year is really 4 days BUT since you work a rotating schedule you can switch with your counterpart and may not have to use PTO. Also you are already off 3 days a week and at least one of those is always during the work week so you have time to plan doctors' appointments and such in order to use PTO for actual personal time off. They match 100% up to 3% for the 401K and half a percent up to 5%. 

The CEO truly cares about all of his employees but he is very busy. A great family man that is an honor to work for!

I haven’t even worked here for a month & I am already experiencing MULTIPLE issues with training.

1. Orientation day was a joke. Screen sharing & being told what to complete. You only got paid for 3 hours, but in reality it took more like 4-5 because of trying to figure out the system.
2. Online training. While completing online training, if you didnt get every part of a question right in certain modules, it would not let you pass. On 1 question I spent over an hour trying to figure out the answer because it gave me a video & expected me to know the correct order. Not very versatile learning.
3. When I tried to reach out about assistance with the training system, my POC was out of the office until the next week.
4. But if I fell behind on my training, I received multiple emails and calls where if I didn’t respond in 30 minutes, another person would reach out, asking if I was still interested in the position. Not very proactive.
5. Some of the training modules are not selecting the correct answer, regardless if you sign out & sign back in. Which oh, by the way, when you click back, or sign out for any reason, it doesn’t save your progress for the modules. An average module ended up taking me an hour and a half to two hours, when it should be 45 minutes.

If the company wants to hire people with little to no experience and training, they need to be more versatile with their training programs. I can’t speak much besides training, but so far it is not going well.

Started out as Urgent Care. Then added telemed. Then primary care. And DOT exams. Just too much to do to keep all of the patients happy. Urgent care visits had to wait behind primary care visits. And all of your patients who are already roomed and waiting to be seen have to be put on hold if a telemed visit comes across. And at the end of what is likely to have been a really frustrating day, you still get to clean the office and toilets. The only people who truly got treated like "family" were the people who worked in management at the corporate office. That being said, since I left this company, because the turnover was always so high, they now require NP's to sign employment contracts which hold you monetarily liable if you do not work the entire length of your contract. And the money you have to pay back is stupid high. No recognition on NP day for NP's. No recognition for Medical assistants on their day each year. Nothing. Even though every single office is only operational because of the NP and medical assistants. Oh, and they installed cameras in all of the offices so they can watch you and hear your conversations the entire time you are at work. Extremely poor management. Back to the contracts....if they treated you well, people would stay and they would not have to have these contracts which hold you liable for so much money. The last time I saw the contract, I believe it was 10k if you left before your first year or two was up. Crazy!!!

This COULD be a great company to work for. The job is pretty straight forward, kind of fun, and definitely rewarding. However, this company is full of micro-managers and corporate suits at higher levels instead of healthcare professionals. As a provider or a medical assistant, you will receive no support. No incentives for working telemed or for days where the patient volume is so high you can’t sit down for 12+ hours and have patients getting angry with you all day. You get a “bonus” based on patient surveys which usually are not great due to short staffing and the company’s no contact registration process. Sick or hurt people want to walk in and see a smiling face, not a screen.  They think it’s okay to have one MA working alone in the clinic all day long during telemed, completely disregarding the  safety and well-being of their employees. On top of that, the pay just flat out sucks. It’s not worth it whatsoever. Somehow the company is still building more clinics despite the ones already built being run by skeleton crews. It won’t be a shock when this company runs itself into the ground. It’s an okay place to build some skills and experience, but keep in mind the hiring process is long & the training process is lengthy and requires travel & a week in a hotel. My advice: just don’t. 

I would strongly caution providers, especially new grads, to carefully review the employment agreement and understand all notice requirements before accepting a position with this company.

In my personal experience, the workload was extremely heavy, with high patient volume and limited support. As a new grad provider, I often felt overwhelmed, mentally and physically burned out, and not adequately supported for the level of responsibility expected.

The employment agreement includes a long notice requirement, and when I was no longer able to continue working under those conditions due to health and safety concerns, the situation became very stressful. I felt pressured and concerned about potential professional consequences.

I also had concerns about the productivity expectations and whether they aligned with my comfort level as a provider.

Overall, based on my personal experience, I would not recommend this workplace to new grad providers unless they fully understand the contract, workload, support structure, and expectations beforehand. I strongly recommend having an employment attorney review the agreement before signing.

A medical assistant should not be "demoted" from a team role by another teammember just because they've been with the company longer. Especially when the MA is already more qualified and been working the position for months! 

Management is very sneaky- They give half truths to your questions or just don't get back to you on your concerns at all. Make a mistake? Expect to do multiple training courses with no forgiveness and be replaced without warning months later. 

It's not about patient care quality, it's about their time and how fast can we herd them through like cattle. They put too much stress on things like a patient survey going out the door and not properly training a MA. Because of my training and previous experience, I know how to do a manual BP, draw blood, follow sharps safety, etc. However, I found myself doing multiple roles because my teammates were not exercised in their medical skills. 

Every workplace has their negatives, but this place will wear you down. If you are an empathethic person with passion for helping people and good at your job, this place will rob you of that joy. It's not suppose to be that way. I loved my teammates, but micromanagement of the wrong things causes too much strain on the good workers.
