What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part is the interaction with the patients, nurses and CNAs. You do more than deliver food trays. You assist as needed with adjusting the tray table, opening items on the tray and making sure items missing from the tray are reported and replaced. Some friendly conversation can often do a lot to make yours and the patient's day better

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part of the job is the accuracy and completion needed when performing each aspect of the job. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The Food Service Dept. employs a very diverse group of people. They range from High School Students working after school to Retirees earning some extra money to supplement their retirement income. There is a range of permanent hourly positions available that provide benefits and paid leave ranging from 20 to 40 hours per week.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You arrive wearing the required F&N attire. This is food service, so a hat or hair net is required. Two items necessary for the job are a "Vocera" (communications) and a barcode scanning device which need to be signed out. Hand hygiene and sanitizing is essential and performed through the shift. Prior to delivering certain food trays it may be necessary to contact a Nursing Assistant or Nurse prior to delivering a tray to a patient. In addition to delivering trays most positions are required to perform a "sweep". This involves going to an assigned area and removing the soiled dishes from a soiled tray cart and returning them to the wear wash area for cleaning. During the meal service there may be times that no carts ready for delivery. If needed, you help in putting away the cleaned items form the dish cleaning machine and storage racks is the dish room. Most positions also have a cleaning assignment that is performed in the room service area. At the end of shift the vocera and scanner need to be wiped down and put on to charge,

I work 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day. 
I am assigned to either the CT Simulator, Linac 1 or Linac 2. 
I love the Sim, mainly because I like being the first therapist the patient meets and I am very confident when it comes to making immobilizations and having them come out correctly. 
The Linac 1 treats mostly our Breast and Pelvis patients and only has MV imaging capability. 
The Linac 2 treats mostly SABR/SRS, H&N, Brain, Chest & Abdomen. This Linac has the ability to treat with a RapidArc, and image with MV, KV or CBCT.
I see about 30 patient's a day, per Linac, depending on the time of year. (Fluctuates between 20-40)
I work very closely with our 2 Oncologists, 3 Physicists and 3 Dosimitrists. 

Over the last 2 years I have grown into a very capable and confident therapist. I know what my strengths and weakness's are. I work hard to be an overall great therapist for my patients, my co-workers and myself. I love meeting and getting to know all of my patient's and the hardest part is when they finish treatment or pass away. Their stories and generosity will always stick with me.

I work mainly with 8 other therapists (11 total). Some I have a great relationship with. There are very large generational gaps within our department, as the work experience ranges from 2 - 25 years between the therapists, with all but 3 therapists only working at Maine General.

The most enjoyable part of my job is giving patient's the ability to decrease their pain, enjoy their life and become healthy once again. My job focuses on patient's and their needs and without them, I would have nothing.

I am an experienced RN, so routine visits were easy enough. I got training in  recert, but was expected to do discharge without training. Schedules were focused on productivity, pushing for 5 patients in a day without regard to travel times and the skilled nursing needs of patients (some can take up to 2 hrs for complex wound care + Foley change or PICC dressing change, or might need additional office hours calling PCP to verify new meds or report new issues or for additional time spent for discharges or recerts. Some payients requiring blood draw also require additional travel time to bring the specimen to the lab within the specified timeframe). I signed up for 32-hr work week but ended up being on the road/patient homes as much as 10 hrs in a day, and at times charting late an additional 1-2 hrs. Imagine working 4 days on a week expecting 8-hr days, but ending up with as much as 45 hrs a week. I quit after a few months. That slave work expectation is not sustainable for me. 
Schedulers might be getting pushed by managers to hit their productivity measures, but eventually, if those in the field are not getting enough support but on the contrary, are being asked to do more, then they can expect a high turn-around. You'd think they would have learned not to waste training costs by ensuring new hires are supported instead of pushed over the edge so early on. 
Pay was not that great for me to even want to hold on tight to that job.
It was chaotic. No structure. I don't know if all homecare services operate in this way. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
The people I work with are wonderful. Positive, supportive. Down to earth. The culture at MaineGeneral is top notch.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The needs of the organization make it difficult to get a good work-life balance. Shift work, no holiday or sick days, it is all PTO and you must use PTO if you are out.   If you don’t have enough it becomes a problem either at work with supervisors or at home or in your own well-being. I am told employees get 3 more days of PTO after 5 years. I hear from some departments that the increased productivity demands combined with lack of PTO and short staffing issues lead to stress. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Culture is very friendly, and supportive. Improvements are focused on processes not people. Encouraged to speak up. Beautiful hospital. Lovely grounds. Decent food in the cafeterias. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I travel to many different locations. I bring all my gear with me, from office to office. I meet with individual employees (up to 8 in a day) privately to support their wellness goals. I am at a desk most of the day. I also create and deliver wellness programs for small groups in person and online. Team meetings about once a week. Lots of autonomy.

Maine General has never provided the training necessary for medical professionals working in other sections of the hospital to understand or appreciate the unique needs of individuals with behavioral health disabilities. While the demands made by these individuals in our state capital have taxed the emergency department to an extreme, since the de-institutionalization from the state hospital in the 70's, MGMC has lost one opportunity after another, to improve the quality of care they could offer. The behavioral health unit seems to take a back-seat to the rest of the hospital. Little effort has been made to provide either education or cross-training for its other employees, in order to enable them to provide compassionate care to those with mental illness. It has led to decades of poor reception in the emergency department, when individuals with mental illness arrive there and require either medical or psychiatric care.

Many people may assume that the kitchen is an easy place to work. Honestly it's not a position for those that think it will be easy. Food Service workers can log nearly 6 miles a day on their feet and on hospital floors this isn't something that you consider lightly. It takes a toll on your body, no matter the age. In my particular case, I log more than those 6 miles, 5 days a week, just at work. It's very fast paced and you need to be able to focus. Not just on getting your job done but, on the dietary needs of your residents/patients. I think Maine General as a whole does OK taking care of their employees. Benefits are OK. I believe that my particular facility is in need of some new perspective with management, as concerns often fall on deaf ears. The hardest part of the job? Being on your feet for 8 hours a day. The most enjoyable? In my case, it's the residents, seeing them every day and knowing that you did them a good service helps make the long hours more tolerable. Extra Perks : there are discounts available ( I don't use them as I have no need) and Virgin Pulse. I use Virgin Pulse every day---my fitness tracker allows me to earn actual cash for all of those miles I put on my feet.

From my experience working for MaineGeneral your experience comes down to two things: What kind of management/leadership your department has and what your job is. In my case, my boss was as toxic as they come. But high ups let things slide when someone has been with the organization for a long time. Too many times people who are not fit to be in a management role are allowed to stay in that role anyway. You cannot claim to have good workplace culture when you allow management to drive people out consistently.

The job itself was pretty good aside from limited growth opportunities - but again these can be impacted by poor leadership. But being asked to do more work than one person should be, for not so great pay, you can only expect people to stick around for so long. But senior leadership also doesn't think additional head count is needed. They will watch people carry a huge workload and think saying 'thank you' will make up for it. When in reality they need to be fairly compensated or reduce work load. 

Where to begin... I was administrative staff and was required to work in one of the healthcare facilities in an "office" that was basically an oversized closet, with grossly inadequate space, equipment and ventilation. Very unhealthy air quality. The air was so bad it made staff members ill, not to mention working with poor ventilation in close proximity to ill patients where you are daily at risk of exposure to airborne and other pathogens. No one should be asked to work in such conditions and definitely not non-medical staff. 

The management's incompetence ranged from unprofessional and petty to downright financially disastrous (another story) and hazardous to one's health. I would definitely steer clear or, if you do consider a position with Maine General, ask a lot of questions and do your research before taking a job there. I never expected to be required to work in a space that lacked basic equipment and decent air, but there it is.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
My direct supervisor was awful to me and others ... my interview was questions about working in a hostile environment and how I could cope with that .. should've been my first red flag, she would audit my stuff and tell me I was way below the acceptable scores and tell she didn't know how I could've been a Coder for as long as a was (25years) and I would find errors in her audit and she act like it didn't matter and was always telling me I wasn't good enough and that she worried that I wouldn't be able to keep my job .. I had co-workers calling me crying because of the things she would say or how she would treat them ... I left and couldn't be happier now, no amount of money is worth that treatment. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Hostile ... when I was hired they said in the Orientation that they were going to focus on the turnover rate because it was so bad

Constant criticism from my supervisor

I come from a background where I have the education and experience to move forward into a medical position. I thought working at Mainegeneral I would get the chance to move forward and use that experience. Unfortunately it doesn't matter what your background is or if you are a good standing employee. You are not even considered if your education or work experience is not recent. No one gives you a chance to succeed or to move forward in your career. I took time off of my medical career due to certain circumstances. Now that I am trying to get back into the field I love, no one is even glancing twice at my resume because of the gap in when I did medical work. I shouldn't have to take another class to learn what I already know to be considered for a position in my field. There is no room to move up when you work here. It's sad because I don't want to leave Mainegeneral. But with the way I'm being handled, I may have to go somewhere where they will actually take my medical experience seriously.
