Marathon-Health

Marathon Health is a company that focuses on employer based healthcare. They partner with major businesses and organizations all across the United States and staff health and wellness centers with Marathon Health employees to provide primary care, occupational health, and several other healthcare services that the client may request for their employees (dependents at some locations).

They typically sign contracts with those companies every couple of years and most contracts are renewed but if the clients are not satisfied with their services after a few years, they can choose not to renew and this leaves the staff at that health and wellness center with one of two options; relocate to another site or find a new opportunity elsewhere. This doesn't occur very frequently but in my time here, I have seen it happen at least a few times. 

The health and wellness center model for most locations is pretty small. Most typically consist of 1 medical assistant and 1 provider and maybe a medical receptionist at some locations. Some clients may have additional services they wish to offer like mental health, physical therapy, and pharmacy services but these are typically the larger clients and locations in larger cities. 

The company is really focused on growth right now which typically isn't a bad thing but in this case, they seem so focused on catching up to Premise Health that it seems like they may have lost touch with the very thing that makes Marathon Health so unique and amazing, their people.

The company just merged with Everside Health and only a few months before that, they acquired Cerner to stay as competitive with Premise Health as possible. 
They are currently undergoing a restructuring/integration. There have been talks of layoffs/reduction in force for some business/corporate level positions as they integrate both teams but appears to only be applicable to corporate level roles, not clinical at this time.

 With any merge, there is always going to be change. It seems like the leadership team has the right intentions behind what they are doing but it has been echoed by several people within the business that the execution is not the best and many areas of the business currently feel like both organizations are competing against each other for their jobs. 

To stay competitive with their rival companies, I imagine they will continue to acquire other companies and complete additional mergers so if change is something that you don't like then I would put this company on your radar and circle back in a few years because they truly are a great company but they have a lot going on right now.

The company offers pretty good pay inline with market value for most positions although they are falling behind on some areas like nursing. 

The vacancy rate at Marathon Health is very low and the team is great at recruiting but turnover for many positions remains pretty high and doesn't seem like an area of focus at the moment.

The company isn't very open to hiring new graduates since many of their health centers require their employees to have a substantial amount of experience due to the autonomy of the job. 

Overall, I enjoyed my job and the team I worked with but back in January 2024, the company disclosed the potential for layoffs due to a restructuring and  I was advised it would be in my best interest to start looking for another job. I was lucky enough to find a great opportunity. 

When I joined the company I wish I knew about the upcoming merge & acquisitions before making the jump from my previous role because the company knew about this from the first day I had joined and several months later there are now talks of people's jobs being impacted and my role could have been posted as a contract opportunity during the interim of them figuring everything out.

 I write this review not to discredit the company by any means because there are some great things about Marathon Health but provide transparency so you can ask the appropriate questions and make the best informed decision for you and your family if this is a company you are truly considering. 


Overall, like other providers have said you do get more time with patients, and you have the health coaching model/wellness which is where Marathon started to help employer groups' bottom line on healthcare ,to offer a cheaper plan that helps patient's spent less so they don't go to the Dr that often, and prevention etc., however, it's still a numbers and ratings game like most other places. It's about what looks good on paper. It's not all that different than any other clinic/hospital except it is nice not seeing 25 patients a day, vs perhaps top end of 16 (if you are busy) and you have no nurse (just MAs at most offices - another challenge). Also too Marathon is a "customer driven" company. Ah wait, that doesn't mean patients folks. The "customers" are the companies or corporations that hire Marathon to run an office for the company's employees to utilize, and they are all about showing their worth to their customers. This can bog down change and progressive approaches in many cases as things at the office have to be "approved" by some head hauncho who doesn't know jack about medical office work flow.  Also they'll give you a shiny title of a Clinical Director which means besides your outreach duties and patient load, you do more paperwork and have more administrative responsibilities, get micromanaged weekly or monthly about what you should and shouldn't be doing. Unfortunately my time at Marathon was just all around disappointing. It could have been so much better, loved my patients there. Also, IMO their hiring is soft, so they tend to draw some NPs that are dysfunctional, lazy or complacent, working the schedule or system to see very little and do very little. (then other clinics get micromanaged??) They don't let employees go easily so if you do have someone dysfunctional, and unless it gets back to the "customer" where Marathon feels they may have a risk of losing a contract (is all they care about, and in that case they are gone fast), then you likely are stuck with a poor performing team member(if their patient ratings are ok). The CEO spends a lot of time patting himself on the back (pretending it's you) which adds to the frustration while real issues that just are not being addressed get lost in the diatribe.

I started with the company when it was Healthstat, and despite facing some challenges, there was a strong sense of teamwork and good morale. However, after the company was acquired during the pandemic, I observed significant changes. The company, now Everside (previously Marathon Health), seems to prioritize expanding its clinic portfolio over maintaining meaningful connections with clinic staff and focusing on patient care. While patient care is one of the company’s stated core values, there has been a noticeable shift towards emphasizing profits and growth.

As a provider, the role has shifted from focusing on patient care to prioritizing metrics and data entry to improve company statistics, often at the expense of quality interactions with patients. Additionally, corporate meetings are frequently scheduled, but they often feel disconnected from the clinic's day-to-day operations and patient needs.

Another area of concern is IT support, which has been inconsistent. While remote staff are promised support, the response times can be slow, and often the only solution offered is to "submit a ticket," without a clear timeline for resolution. This makes it challenging to keep operations running smoothly across multiple clinics.

While the pay is above average, the compensation structure is not complemented by additional benefits like bonuses, and the health insurance coverage could be better, especially for a healthcare company. Additionally, the reimbursement process for continuing medical education (CME) can be cumbersome.

Overall, if you are considering a provider role with Everside/Marathon, it may be worth evaluating the work environment and understanding the company's current direction. For those who thrive in a more patient-centered environment or desire a stronger sense of connection with colleagues, it may be helpful to explore other opportunities.

Mission statement mainly for marketing, mission not valued or implemented in clinical practice. Typical day at work includes patient visits in office: chronic, acute, and urgent care visits, psychiatric care due to psych provider shortage, chronic pain management, multiple telephone consultations, interpretation of diagnostic testing and lab reports, medication refills.

Most patients had health savings accounts so a lot of time is spent figuring out what medications, diagnostic testing, and services patient's are able/willing to pay for. Basically, its health care ala cart - what patient's select may not necessarily meet currently accepted standards of care.

Providers are on-call 24/7. 

Management: It was all about profits not people. Work Culture: same

Compensation and Benefits: Company paid less than agreed upon compensation. 

Job Work/Life Balance: Expected to put work ahead of life balance. 

Hardest part of the job: poor treatment by management and some patients.  Many patients were angry and complained about paying for medical services. Many patients complain if you can't give them what they want (when not medically appropriate). Such complaints are counted against providers by management. 

Best part about job: 1. providing medical care 2. quitting!
What I learned: Palidina Model for better health care was not working. Would not recommend working for this company.

As a People Experience Manager at Marathon Health, I get to do work I genuinely love for a company whose mission and values I fully believe in. Finding a position with Marathon was a total blessing for me. They fulfill every single ideal I have about how a well structured and supportive healthcare system should run. Leadership is just that, LEADERSHIP, not just managers and supervisors, but people who guide the way to help you be successful with the resources and understanding you need to be the best at your job. My coworkers were some of the best people I've ever worked with! I was never intimidated or worried about asking questions, and there wasn't a culture of fear about making a mistake or having to take a step back and do something over.  Everyone takes care of everyone, and helps one another bring out the best the can to serve the clients that contract with Marathon.  It was a delight serving the client I worked for, and the patients were great! It was SO refreshing coming being with Marathon, after coming from really terrible healthcare organizations in the past,  it was a breath of fresh air! Marathon epitomizes how a great health system should run, and reminds me of the "good ol' days" of when I started my career in the medical field, and there was a strong camaraderie and value of team work. 

When first applying at Marathon Health, I was skeptical and thought maybe some of what I read/interpreted was too good to be true. But I have been absolutely impressed by the culture here which demonstrates that if you invest in your employees, your patients benefit.  Every health center is a little different but our team is like none other- being small has its pros and cons, but ultimately management has our backs which really makes the difference. The most enjoyable part is the people I work with both the patients we serve, and the colleagues here.  They are generous with their CME time and money. The hardest part is navigating referrals (because we're independent, we have to communicate back and forth more with our patients and offices to which we've referred) and gaining experience with procedures because at our location there's less volume for this.

The most enjoyable part of the job is the time you have to spend with patients since appointment length is longer than usual. The focus on health and wellness is refreshing as compared to traditional medical practices. The company's mission and vision is empowering. The company has been voted as Best Places to Work and they tout they put their Ambassadors first. However, when working in the satellite health centers, you do not feel that you are put first. The company has become top heavy with administration and management positions and are often out of touch with how the environment and work at the health centers are. Account management is very slow and unresponsive in addressing issues causing high performing staff to get burned out and consider leaving. Very little oversight as to the performance of each health center and their compliance with quality and safety measures. The work is a slower pace and can tend to be boring for providers who seek a challenge. Overall, the mission and vision is great but the company is experiencing growing pains and the health centers' staff suffer due to management's reactive rather than proactive style to issues.

Healthstat was a good place to work, especially if your able to travel across the country and be gone from two days to sometimes two weeks. It has room for advancement into other departments and it does have good benefits. The biggest Downfall at this place would have to be favoritism and unfortunately the easiness for the upper management to fall prey to drama brought on from the contracted employees. 

A typical day would consist of going to the client's place of business an setting up for a health screening. This could be for one day or two weeks; also this could take place at one location or a different one everyday. This task was easy when you had great hardworking coworkers, which was most of the time. The most enjoyable part of the job was being able to travel and see places that I've never seen. Hardest part was at the same time, being away from the family. The Management above me were usually supportive, but would get sucked into the drama that might unfold while on the road. I learned how to fine tune my management and customer relations skills. I was Lead and had to take care of everyone on my team and make all the contacts with the client.

Open and transparent executive leadership that want to see all team members succeed in their respective roles. As a new hire in 2015, was approached by company CEO at an onboarding event. He took it upon himself to make personal introductions to everyone in the group. Company truly cares about their employees and wants to improve the delivery of healthcare in the US. Grateful for the time I spent at OurHealth, the relationships I built and the impact I was able to make with the platform I was given. Innovative strategy to improve delivery of care. Thoughtful communication from HQ and executive leadership who encourage feedback and collaboration from all team members, especially clinicians on the front line in the field.
