Marco Technologies

Marco was overall a sub-par employer given their reputation in the St. Cloud area. The work at the company is fast paced, was usually manageable. Prior to my leaving it was clear that the workload was getting too heavy and staff were starting to be added to teams to help, but quality incoming talent was rare, so it generally made work harder and I spent a fair amount of time cleaning up other people's messes alongside doing my job. Since Marco's pay is so low and given St. Cloud's reputation as one of the worse cities in Minnesota, we seemed to be scraping the bottom of the barrel for candidates.

Pros-
- 9-5 Meant 9-5 more often than not. I could drop my work at 5, head home and not have to worry about calls about it. Overtime happened on rare instances, but generally it was actively discouraged. I know this was likely a cost saving measure but it enabled a pretty solid work life balance.
- 401k match is good, but there's a vesting schedule.
- I can only speak for St. Cloud in this instance, but management generally treated employees well in terms of how we were treated as people. My supervisor was fantastic and did his best to ensure we weren't overworked despite our limited manpower.
- 15 days of PTO starting. It's about what I would consider to be industry standard. You're stuck there for a few years before accumulating any more annually. Carryover is as much as you earn in a year, but it's forfeit if you have any over that come your employment anniversary. 
- There are plenty of internal training opportunities.


Cons-
- Marco's pay is HORRIBLE for technical positions - can't speak to sales/admin/leadership. Comparable positions in other areas of the city pay around 30% more, but openings happen less often.
- Education benefits are barely there - Marco will only reimburse for certs if it directly relates to your position, and there is NO tuition assistance or reimbursement. 
- Advancement is difficult - you'll definitely get the skills to advance here, but not necessarily the opportunity to advance. I had to seek it out elsewhere.
- Clients can be hit or miss on quality, some will treat you like garbage while some are absolute diamonds. 
- As indicated before, the low pay really doesn't bring forth the best candidates on the technical side. I spent a lot of time cleaning up messes made by inexperience and ineptitude, and it got really frustrating when it was by people hired to work at the same level I was at.
- Company events were clearly more geared for sales, admin and management type of staff. As someone technical it was very difficult to get away from my desk to do any of the events the company put on outside of the lunch hour.
- No paid sick leave or paid family leave of any kind. You have to burn PTO if you or a dependent gets sick. There is bereavement leave if tragedy strikes in the family, but it's strictly defined to closer family with not a lot of consideration for those with larger, more extended families.
- No real flex scheduling to speak of. I could take any amount of PTO I needed to make appointments, but generally was only able to flex time in emergencies, but was generally given until the end of the pay period to make up any time missed or take PTO.
- Marco's work from home policy is ludicrously backwards for how technology oriented they are as a managed service provider. There's an unreasonable waiting period before you can even do it at all, and once you can it's initially only on an ad-hoc basis, getting scheduled telework approved requires a herculean effort and is nearly impossible without the full force of your supervisor behind you. The remote support Marco provides does NOT require support personnel to be in the office every day, and I don't believe Marco grasps this at all. WFH a couple of days a week would be a HUGE perk for employees, and most of my coworkers found that they were more productive working from home instead of in the highly visible St. Cloud office.
- Job descriptions are vague and don't capture even most of the scope of duties that you'll actually be doing day to day. 
- Management conducts an annual employee survey, compensation has been brought up multiple times but they have yet to take any action to raise wages in any meaningful way. Lower wages might have been okay when Marco was ESOP and there was the trade-off of actually having stake in the company, but that's not the case now that Marco is owned by a private equity firm.

I would say that I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Marco until the very last year which seemed to complete ruin my perspective of the place. For wherever reason, there always seems to be a huge focus for IT to do well there but they never seem to have any resources to really make them succeed. 
For instance: They like to hire people and put them into the work culture but the expectation is that they should know what they are doing right away without any experience. The training program is lacking in almost every regards and they decided to have someone that they took from sales and placed into a supervisor role assist new hires in becoming more comfortable in their roles. This creates a conflict has the new hires on dispatch seem to not know what is going on. even after being there for months and its made clear at times that the person who was put in charge of this has other priorities in mind that dont seem to be within his assigned duties. 
The management team promotes this culture that all suggestions are heard and everyone has a voice. That only seems to be the case if you agree with management. If you make a mistake, be prepared for management to be breathing down your neck at every opportunity afterwards.
That said, I have to say that the people whom I worked with made all the difference. My co-workers were kind and friendly and I had one or two that went out of their way to ensure that I knew what I was doing and would check up on me daily. If not for them, I don't know if I would have lasted even this long. 
All in all, Marco's mangement has shown that they don't see to care for the employee's opinions which is a shame as my co-workers are what truly make this place special.

When I first joined this company, it had a strong employee-centered culture. Leadership valued its people, consistently ranked among the top employers to work for, and maintained high employee satisfaction scores. Work/life balance was respected, and management made a conscious effort to protect teams from burnout by setting realistic workload expectations.

Over the past year and a half, however, the organization has undergone significant restructuring aimed at increasing growth and profitability for shareholders. During this process, many departments were required to reapply for existing positions, and several employees were laid off despite voluntary departures already reducing staffing levels. Employee benefits have also been reduced, including a decrease in the 401(k) match, little to no approvals for continuing education and certification reimbursement, and changes to insurance coverage that lowered organizational costs while increasing employee out-of-pocket expenses and reducing overall coverage. At the same time, the organization has continued to expand senior and executive leadership roles despite operating with fewer frontline employees.

Work/life balance has deteriorated substantially as workloads and responsibilities have increased without adequate staffing support. Operational changes occur frequently, with no change management process or sufficient time for employees to adapt before additional changes are introduced—sometimes reversing prior decisions entirely. As a result, employee morale is at a low point, and turnover continues to rise due to increasingly unrealistic expectations and ongoing instability within the organization.

With the position I was in I enjoyed what I was doing, and the majority of the people I worked with, but Management was slowly going down hill. In the last few months before I was let go, they canceled the 401k match, and the manager I had never really conversed with me unless I reached out to her. And despite no wrongdoing on my part, tenure didn't matter. I was told in no uncertain terms when I was let go and 2 people with less tenure on my team were staying it was because "I didn't bring as much to the table" as they did. When COVID started I was the only one on our team who still went into the office on the team I was on to make sure things there were taken care of, but none of that dedication made any difference and I was the one let go. If you aren't in daily contact with managers, even when your performance isn't an issue be wary. Management also likes to not address issues. Back at the end of February we were having issues with the manager I had, and I was addressing it with my managers boss. I hadn't recieved my annual raise the past May due to my manager wanting to "justify a higher raise." My manager kept giving me the run around about working with her boss, and when I was discussing these issues I found out that my manager hadn't discussed it at all, and to make matters worse, when my bosses boss is the one who took over after my previous manager was let go and never addressed the issue. I also found out after the fact that a coworker who'd started at the end of 2019 but was let go before I was and was training was being paid more than I currently had been making despite my 5 years of experience with the company, so pay wasn't as competitive for tenure as it should have been

Was hired for one position and accepted. After that I was told the position changed but I still went with it. Then, yet again, my position changed.

 HR was might as well have not even been there. I sent emails for help with things and never received an response. My entire team was brand new. My managers were salary so didn’t know how to show me to clock in. Reached out to HR, never got a response. There were other things like this that were problems because there was no onboarding at all. 

My position was new and was not anything like I was told it would be. My third day there my manager had to leave to go cover positions below him due to being short staffed. This happened over and over. I rarely saw anyone in management on my team because they were sent everywhere doing other positions because the company couldn’t keep employees. My manager was great and did the best he could to help me under the circumstances. 

I was able to work from home for my position because my particular manager was so flexible. I don’t know if this would be the case in other divisions. This was a huge perk as was the flexibility in hours. 

However the job itself was awful. The company constantly pats itself on the back talking about all their growth, meanwhile we could not service our customers. I spent my days getting yelled at by customers who had been strung along for weeks or even months not getting the services they had contracts for. 

All in all this was an awful experience and waste of my time. 

Marco is a growth company that has a strong culture, so if you want to work for a company focused on building new opportunities for employees, Marco is great.  Marco offers numerous training and certification opportunities to further share your career. 

On average, most people that get a job at Marco stay for a long time - with most of my co-workers having 10+ years with the company.

I have read other reviews and wanted to share my observations:
- Compensation:  Marco is a growth company which means most compensation plans have a competitive base salary with large bonus incentives when goals are hit.
- Benefits:  Over the past few years, there has been new benefits added and costs have been more heavily taken on by Marco than passing to employees
- Ownership: Yes, Marco was an Employee Owned Company and was sold to Private Equity in 2015.  Private Equity is simply the ownership structure and has a hands-off approach to management of the business. 
Most if not all of the culture programs that built our ESOP culture are still in place today. For example - we have a Peer Appreciation Program which is a fundraiser for United Way with each entry costing the submitter $1.  In 2020 during COVID we generated 8300 entries - which 
 shows how much comradery there is amongst team members.

Was once a great place to work until it was bought out and is now just a profit or loss figure on a financial conglomerates quarterly financial statement.   Upper management has lost touch with it's employees while trying to keep their owners complacent with their ROI losses.  While they still try to keep a "Responsible Community Consciousness", only their sales staff and supervisors are treated with respect and special treatment.  Basic working staff are no longer valued employees. They are just bodies at desks with an expense tied to them and are expendable to meet constant cost cutting measures to improve bottom line in the face of inflated goals and decreasing results.  There is a ever increasing double standard mentality and culture under the "Team Environment" that is touted as Marco's best work practices.  Who you are and who you can placate most humbly, without questioning backward moving decision making, unproductive work flow changes and inconsistent leadership direction is how you get ahead.  Your opinion is no longer welcome, you are just part of the hive.

Marco changes the comp plan every single year to chase private-equity targets (EBITA), and it didn’t just create chaos and it wrecked the entire organization from the inside out. The constant scrambling to please ownership destroyed stability, crushed morale, and pushed away good employees and loyal customers. The company has been losing market share year after year, and everyone on the inside knows exactly why.

Leadership is reactive, inconsistent, and completely disconnected from what employees and customers actually needed. Instead of building a real strategy, they kept moving the goalposts, tightening comp, and pretending it was “alignment.” It wasn’t. It was damage control. And it showed.

Working there made me feel insular, boxed-in, and cut off from growth — like the only thing that mattered was keeping up with whatever new plan came from the top. Leaving opened my eyes to how unhealthy the environment actually was.

Honestly, I feel bad for the people who are still there and haven’t looked outward. They deserve better leadership, better support, and a company that prioritizes long-term success instead of short-term private-equity math.

I have had the opportunity to grow my career at Marco over the last 12 years.  What stands out most about the company is the level of passion and enthusiasm people have over your personal and professional development.   Ask around and you'll find people always willing to help you even they are not the right person.  Super important in a growing company that Marco has maintained that identity. This is a fantastic place if you want to work for a growing company with a ton of opportunity and leave your mark, but if you are seeking to skate through your career going relatively unnoticed, not seek a challenging career, and not looking to make an impact on your work area then this may not be the place for you.  Some of the most skilled professionals I have met are at Marco and have a passion for continuing its culture of being a great place to work.   Marco also surveys its employees annually to understand how to  improve on its commitment to being a great place to work. We are always tasked with doing the right things for our long term  success, with our clients and our employees.

I have worked at Marco for 7 years and they have been some of the most challenging ( I LOVE a good challenge) and rewarding years in my professional life.  Marco is a growth company that sets the bar high for performance and expectations.  We take great pride in doing right by our customers and employees.  We survey our customers and employees regularly and take the feedback (both good and not so good) to continually improve not only the experiences our customers have with us but how our employees feel about the company they work for.  Soliciting feedback and taking action on that feedback is at the foundation of Marco.  

I feel fortunate to work for an organization that not only deeply cares for delivering the best services to our customers but also has its foundation built on continually improving the environment I work in and maintaining a high level of employee satisfaction.  

Do we work hard......YEP.....but it seems a lot less hard when surrounded by friends who pull on the oars right next to you.
