Can never stay well staffed, always long wait times for patients calling in and then we have to transfer the patients to another queue to wait longer just for them to speak with a nurse even though the patient just needs to be told they have negative test results or to schedule a COVID test. Very unnecessary for the patients to wait ridiculous amounts of time on hold when PSR’s are more than capable to do so. Everyday we are yelled at or sworn at by patients because for years they have been told “we’re working on it” but things never change and the patients are never talked to about it so it shows the patients they can disrespect staff without any repercussions. We are constantly micromanaged by under qualified management who don’t even know answers to simple questions which leads to them asking another manager what the answer is or they just give us the wrong answer and then we get in trouble because we were given the wrong answer. Only aloud 10 minute breaks, only one minute and 30 seconds from one call to the next. We can’t even get to know coworkers because we’re not aloud to have a 2 minute side conversation or you get yelled at, even going to the bathroom you have to tell your supervisor....the last time I had to ask to use the bathroom was in middle school. But management are not always available when you need them...practice what you preach!! Protocols are very unorganized and not spread to all employees on what the correct protocols are so not only are things done incorrectly countless times a day but patients are always told different answers about things and it makes us look stupid. It’s all about numbers and how fast you can get the patient off the phone so you can get to the next. With that pressure it’s leading to poor quality notes and patient care. Patients ask for calls back and they never get a call back. Management plays favoritism, smiles in your face to then turn around and act like we’re in grade school and talk bad about you. Very unorganized and burn out rate is high. Management needs to look at the amazing employees that leave the company because of this and fix it. We lose way too many great, hardworking employees due to this. How they pick supervisors in this department is beyond me because they don’t have a clue on what they are doing and more than half of the employees in this department are far more qualified with degrees, many more years of experience and more compassion than the poor excuses of some supervisors in this department. The CEO needs to actually take time to look at what is going wrong because I’m not sure how much longer until this department completely falls apart. It’s sad, it’s really a good place to work but as the years go by it just gets worse. 

I have been a HIM specialist for almost 12 years and with that came a lot of change in the dept.  The management has changed over, the dept. is mostly made up of all new people, besides myself and two other people.  I feel that is time for a change for myself to grow as a professional and advance to another career.  A typical day of work for myself would be to process release forms, scan in new patient records, problem solve errors that the EHR can not solve, answer policy and procedure questions for my newer coworkers, answer phone calls from clinical staff, patients, physicians and outside sources and also complete the metrics of productivity for the dept.  I have learned that I have leadership skills that I could use in the future, that my coworkers and managers value me as a trusted resource and also that when the tough times come, I am loyal and help to solve situations that were out of the dept.'s control.  I really respect my management team as they have worked hard to help the dept. become a well oiled machine.  I feel comfortable going to them for anything that I need assistance or feedback with.  My coworkers are a great group that I really enjoy knowing.  As a group of 15+ they are fun, respectful and hard working.  Everyone works as a team.  The hardest part of my job is the constant changing of policies regarding the release of records.  Our company legal dept. is always finding different ways of processing HIPAA regulations and so each time a change happens, I must retrain my coworkers and work with management to update the manual of policies.  Also, because of recent changes in closing clinics, the work load of transferring 4,000 patients has been put on the HIM dept. to process.  Unfortunately, we were not given much help outside of our already fully staffed team.  The most enjoyable part of my job is the occasional team exercises we do that build up moral and allow us to relax a little bit in between large amounts of productivity.

The company as a whole has a cool mission and lots of decent, kind hearted people. They throw some fun activities to try and boost morale which is appreciated. However, working patient facing in the Healthcare Center is so disorganized. There are different expectations for different people IN THE SAME ROLE and there is no accountability for both employees or patients. It’s turned into a free for all with no slap on the wrist for employees who consistently make mistakes and make more work for others, or employees that get away with shopping online or playing on their phones instead of helping their fellow co workers. This goes the same for patients. They can treat our staff terribly and nothing happens. Unfortunately, this place got hit hard after Covid and I still don’t think they’ve recovered. The management I feel does care but there’s no time for them to do so and be around to help due to always being in meetings, or having to help room patients because of our MA shortages. There are so many workflows that aren’t efficient and in turn are minimizing our quality of care. No room to really move up. No platform to express ideas for change, and if there is you don’t feel heard. They do have good benefits and pay overall well. If that’s what’s most important to you… 

Over stressed , over worked , and underpaid ! Save your time and look elsewhere. This company sells you on “A Great Place to Work” since a certain year ... but the problem is they are growing too fast and don’t care about the bottomline. Patients can treat the employees however they want and you’re expected to “swallow that pill” . No support from management ever . All sites are a mess. So unorganized.  Patients are constantly complaining bc they wait days to get their questions answered through Martin’s Point famous Portal , which has no IT support. God forbid you try calling in about a question ... patients have been hearing the same lie for a year now -“we are working on it “ .Patients walk in off the street and expect to be seen the same day and that exact minute , but Martin’s Point isn’t urgent care. So we just have to deal with it.  Off site HR, members services, HIM, and all other dept don’t have a clue what is going on either. This place is a joke . So much “lip service” going on and it’s no wonder so many employees are unhappy , but let’s make them take a survey and offer free lunch to get great results to become a certified Great Place to Work again . Talk about forced results. If you want to go home drained everyday , exhausted, and underwhelmed with your job then go ahead .. apply.

Great company to work for. Unless you're a medical assistant. You get the brunt of most of the work, no opportunity for growth or promotion-- which of course is very typical of medical assistants. The pay is better than all of the other hospitals and offices in Maine, but nationally falls a bit short. There is a feeling of pride and "family" they like to develop, which is fine. The core values sound like we're in a cult, but they do make sense to a degree. A lot of it is mostly talk. Annual merit raises, annual bonuses etc. Pie day is a big deal here, but there's no option if you're gluten free. In fact, any time they get food for the organization, they won't go out of their way to make sure you can eat if you have any allergies. Management "tries" to offer support and say you're valued, but there is no action behind their words. They keep leading you on until you realize you've been there 5 years and nothing to show for your hard work except stress and back pain. Oddly, I still highly recommend this company if you have any interest in Healthcare. After working for other companies, this is by far the best in Maine. 

I was an employee for just under 19 years. I transitioned the department from a Materials Management operation with a staff of 6 in 1993 with a storeroom and courier - to a decentralized operation utilizing PCards and staff of 1. In 2003 the department began to grow and expand inventorying for each of the outlying clinics to a department of 4 in 2012.
I enjoyed seeking out and developing long-term relationships with many local vendors to support our business; even though we rebid major business lines every three years.
Most recently, I was working on developing both a contract and Asset tracking system.
Martin's Point's primary line of business is to provide health care for military retirees and their families. Due to DoD budget cuts, my position was eliminated. The three buyers that I hired & trained, now report to the VP of Support Services (who will absorb my position).

The organization has been facing great change because of the financial and economic times. As a result, decisions in hiring seem to take a long time and recently there have been a number of cuts in staffing. In particular, there has been some high turnover in management (seems like they don't stay more than a couple years).

I will say that Martin's Point:

(+) It pays quite well which can make it very attractive.

(+) The mission and many of the people are dedicated, ambitious and compassionate .

(-) Depending on your job you may or may not experience the politics (e.g. a long delay in decision-making) as well as quickly know what landmines to watch out for.

Martin's Point has much to offer...A piece of advice for one to succeed at Martin's Point - you'll need to be very adaptive, patient with the decision-making (tends to take up a lot of meetings) and be able to handle a heavy workload (not the greatest work/life balance)

The pay is fine if you can deal with being manipulated and treated like a ‘business need’ at all time. They are extremely focused on making the company money, and that’s about it. Hours and shifts change constantly and they refuse to do any sort of set schedule, and they don’t give a flying f*ck about your needs if it doesn’t benefit their scheduling needs. This company will order food for employees but then treat you like yesterday’s garbage if you blink the wrong way. Very two-faced and unprofessional.

I enjoyed working at Martin's Point Healthcare. It was a company that was based on the Values that the company made. I worked on a great team of 6 phone representatives. With the team that I worked with we worked very close with one another and was always there to help each other and to learn from each other. I answered between 50-75 calls a day depending on the daily call volume assisting new members with the plan as well as members that have been on the plan for years. We answered questions about claims, providers, health benefits, copay and coinsurance costs as well as anything else we could help them with. I believe in assisting members and patients from the second they make the call with questions or concerns to the very end. I even would go above and beyond to call providers offices for members if needed or call the pharmacy as well about medications.

This organization claims itself as a great place to work, and that's true for some. But there's also stratification where a few people are chosen as superstars,  able to move through the ranks despite often anti teamwork behavior while most others are left behind . Salary people get far more respect and benefits than hourly despite the importance of the hourly people who offer face patients/members to offer excuse for system breakdowns caused by the salary people.   It's frankly like being stuck in a caste system such as in India. People are stuck under job titles 
Hourly people very rarely move into Salary jobs.  In addition,  the age discrimination is rampant.
