Typical day of work includes the feast or famine, sometimes more of one than the other, but never too dull a day.  Patients and coworkers keep it interesting.
  I've learned that there are things I can learn from everyone... Some like to teach.  some don't like to be bothered. It's working for people with people. I'd like to think we can all get along and for the most part, we do! 
 Management is sometimes a bit removed from the actual front lines...  I've worked at two hospitals and there may be this type of mentality of an (us vs them) that is realized at ANY place where the administrative and managerial staff aren't all that "present" unless there is some perceived reason whether handing new policies out or other "delegated work".  I'd like to think that we are all links and that as long as we are all connected, the wheel keeps going.  When a link gets a bit stuck or rigid , some lubricant may need applied to operate smoothly again.  Sometimes the link wants to abandon the others and then the wheel no longer is moving as the chain is no longer effective. One link does effect the rest of the chain.  Problem is it doesn't matter if it is a "master" link or not.  Same result happens.  Anyhow.
 My coworkers are great!  At least I think they are.  If I'm wrong... I'll let them tell you.  ;>)
 Hardest part of my job is that it hasn't quite raised the salary to accommodate the raising in prices all over the place elsewhere...  I don't like that the Orthopedic folks like to have lots of connected exams.   For example... someone may come in with elbow pain... the Orthopedic staff  would like to see wrist, forearm, elbow, and humerus films as well.  I'm thinking that there should be some way to actually hold up to our ALARA (as low as reasonable achievable) standard. To me it seems that there is a bit of unnecessary films, when 9 times out of 10..if there is a problem, it was where the pain was initially described by patient.  The only other gripe is when you are on portable exams... we use a pager to respond back for folks that need stat portable x-ray exams.  Multiple folks have paged for the same person to be done and when you are the tech and you have to stop what you're doing just to get the same information you already knew to be true prior seems to be non productive.  This was addressed (by me)  and for some time it got better.  Sometimes things change, sometimes they stay the same.   Sometimes... it is a back and forth thing.
 The most enjoyable part of my job is doing my job.  I love what I do and I can't necessarily force my happiness on folks.  I do treat others as I would like to be treated. I like when someone who came in upset can leave encouraged cuz there ARE people that still caring and respectful of other people.  I tend to share my faith in Jesus.  He IS for everybody, but not everyone sees Him the same way.  I don't think that will change before He comes back and clears things up. We can't force belief, just like we can't force x-rays.  The receiving party will feel violated, (exposed), no pun intended with the x-ray thing...okay, maybe just a little..  ;>)  I don't have too much negative to say actually.  This is a well known hand/wrist trauma clinic as well as a great heart and spine hospital as well.  I have never wanted to leave this place no matter how busy it got.  We weren't made to be lazy.  I'm hoping this review didn't get too off the topic. But I do like to add they have a digital portable machine for shooting portable x-rays.  I like that!  They are keeping up with the nicest stuff to work with.  Good people, Good tools, Good results!

This office has so much wrong from the top on down. Staff is racist. Providers always has negative things to say about patients that have state insurance. This office is very unprofessional and the management shows favoritism bully staff and discuss your personal/medical information to other employees. Everyone backstab and talk behind your back. Provider are inconsiderate of not only the patients time but their co-workers time as well. The MA does a 2 persons job. Management does not take up for their co-workers and if your friends with management you don’t have to do any work all day just walk around the office doing nothing or hanging in management office. Oh but you can come in on weekends to do overtime only if you are friends with supervisors. Everyone lies and no one takes accountability for their actions. Managers do not reprimand certain employees because they fear them. Medstar promotes high quality of patient care but that is a joke. It’s all about numbers and money. I wouldn’t even want to be a patient of this office not because the doctors are ever on schedule they run 1 to 2 hours behind on the daily basis. they don’t value patient time  The.  whole office front staff, MA’s , and providers violate HIPPA regulations on a daily basis. Providers will discuss the person medical information with staff and will say things like well if he got HIV he deserved it because of his lifestyle. Their is no team work no structure and no professional. This place is a complete joke. When you go to management about work related issues they ignore your issues especially if your having a issue with one of their friends. The office manager is a push over racist and doesn’t make her own decisions. She never makes any decisions without consulting with her friends that work their and she isn’t even medical. They lie to each other and they lie to the patients all the time. Management would  slander the reputation of Providers and discuss. personal information about providers with everyone in the office even the patients. No team work at all it’s always Pediatric  against internal medicine and front desk against  back MA’s If you speak up for yourself your retaliated on and in some cases will be fired. As long as your snitching and reporting back to management you will get overtime, raises and promotion. You can not trust anyone and the environment and workload has had staff quite. Benefits are good pay isn’t for what they expect of you and the environment is mentally stressful

Having worked on several units across the country, I can confidently say that this is one of the most challenging places to work as an L&D nurse. Almost always the ratio is 1:2, even when AWHONN Standards and common sense might suggest that a 1:1 ratio is most appropriate. Additionally, patients are not assigned but auctioned, so the combination of 2 patients could be pretty demanding (for example, a preeclamptic with uncontrolled BPs and a diabetic on an insulin drip, as I once had). Often my recoveries were 'abbreviated' to 1 hour, and I distinctly remember having 30 minutes to recover a patient post-cesarean, before I had to resume care of ("take back") my other (2nd) patient. The other nurses are in the same boat, which means that there is seldom someone free to help. More often than not, I was the primary and secondary nurse in a delivery or I'd be admitting someone out of triage with no one else free to watch my other patient. This is the only place I've worked where the charge nurse so seldom left the desk to help at the bedside and rarely (if ever) took a patient themself. The unit was frequently on divert and on-call managers were called in regularly, which helped but only slightly. On top of this all, the unit policies and practices, documentation, and setup (don't get me started on the fact that the rooms are kept empty of any supplies and the nurse has to "shop" for the room in order to stock it for each patient) additionally burden the already-strapped bedside nurse. The team of residents and attendings seemed to have little sympathy; every 20 minutes, one who was dutifully monitoring my documentation would call me to say that it was time to uptitrate my pitocin.

I walked into every single shift anxious and on guard, wondering if this would be the shift when something truly unsafe would happen. I am not exaggerating when I say that I am still -- 6 months later -- dealing with the PTSD and anxiety that I developed from my time at Medstar. Wait tables, apply elsewhere, move out of DC -- whatever you do, do not accept a position here.

Unfortunately, my tenure was brief, and I did not have the opportunity to experience the positive aspects of the workplace culture that I had hoped for. My personal experience was largely negative, which ultimately led to my decision to resign during my orientation period.

The most challenging aspect was a perceived disconnect between the company's stated values and the daily behaviors exhibited by staff at all levels, including management. I observed a lack of professionalism, particularly a culture of gossip that seemed to involve leadership. I believe management should model professional conduct and remain above such behaviors, and the absence of this created a stressful and unsupportive environment.


Based on my brief experience, the work environment felt unsupportive and, at times, adversarial. During my orientation, I felt I was not receiving adequate training or support from my preceptor. For example, I received disciplinary action for attending to another patient's mobility needs while my preceptor was occupied. This incident, among others, contributed to a feeling of being unfairly targeted rather than supported as a new hire, which was a significant factor in my decision to resign.

During my orientation, a typical day involved managing my full patient assignment, including medication administration and care, largely independently. I observed that my preceptors were often disengaged from the orientation process. Despite my efforts to perform my duties, I received feedback that I was not integrating quickly enough, which created a confusing and high-pressure dynamic. I was concerned that this lack of structured support could lead to patient safety issues, for which I would be held solely accountable.


They like to give this job on indeed the title of "medical receptionist" but once hired you work for a small call center of 23 girls, most of the time understaffed. You work in a basement that is damp and has mold related issues. You are required to answer 125 or more calls a day. Monday's and Tuesday's calls are back to back and you don't have a second to breathe in between, more or less be able to comprehend the disgruntled patients on the phone who can range from extremely rude to just okay. The call center is a demanding place to work but once you get the call process and structure down, then you are left with dealing with upper management who don't care about you as a human being, more so a manufacturing line in a warehouse. There is no room for advancement. You only see sunlight on your 15 min breaks and your very short 30 minute lunch, All of which they watch very closely in order to wrongfully terminate whenever they see fit. The turn over rate for this job is high due to lack of consideration to employees and the pay not being worth the amount of stress you get from the job. You are just a number here, play by the rules and keep your head down and make your numbers and don't mention that the India call center is scamming patients out of money by calling them and requesting payments over the phone for office visits rendered that have not been. I truly hope Medstar health comes in and revamps this Medstar shah group. They need all the help they can get. Overall moral is low and everyday is the same.

The PCMH program was a great program to assist patients in home and at the doctors office. I gained knowledge in case management with 50 patients ever month. Typically, I would begin my day, calling my patients to confirm doctors appts and the time for us to meet face to face, I will check emails, respond, attend meetings online and go to the office for supplies, fax reports and or send out mail for doctors offices and mailings. I would then spend the majority of my day traveling to doctors, meeting with patients, obtaining consents. Then, I would have to make phone encounters throughout the evening and diligently write care plans for the doctors. Into late hours of the evening, I then would go through the list of potential patients so that I can plan my phone calls, office visits and to have an inservice with the doctors, I worked with 30-40 doctors. The most enjoyable part of my job was meeting with patients, assisting them with better controlling the diseases, preventing them from readmissions to hospitals, obtaining home referrals for nursing, best doctors, magellan, physical, occupational, speech therapy, social work consult and pharmacy assistance for my patients. The hardest part of my job was that there was no turn off in hours, I had to meet with patients, or call patients whenever they were available and convince them to take care of their health over the phone.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I’m very experienced, professional, and honest. I was hired as host but used for other things. I would spend 12 hours doing things that weren’t in my initial job description. I understand improvisation and helping out, but we were used and our intelligence was played with. I pride customer service. The first time I spoke up and was able to do my actual job description, I made a difference on the floor and was told that by patients, and employees. Seeing people with no customer service skills and not professionally dressed serving the patients, standing around in the kitchen during down time not helping at all, was astonishing to me. They would mostly be young men as  standing around while women carrying boxing and restocking. There’s a guy who works 12 hours but since he serve and doesn’t have to be in the kitchen, he naps and leave premises while on the clock. I felt like as usual in this field, I was thrown into a position ran by friends and family. Dishonest, lack growth, basic customer service skills. Truly a heartbreak

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It’s hard to explain, but it’s ran as a joke. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
12 hours working hard, doing something that wasn’t explained during my interview watching young boys play around in the kitchen and hold up the clock for 12 hours

This organization employs some of the most intelligent individuals on this earth. Here, it is easy to come across extremely knowledgeable specialists in each and every area health care/ health science, and most importantly, they are all willing to share their wealth of knowledge with anyone who would like to know. Hands down, this organization is certifiably an amazing teaching network.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, management here is some of the worse management I have experienced in my entire career. Employees are provided very little work life balance and a plethora of tasks, with minimal instruction (no matter how well versed you may be in a task). Peer to peer relationships are hampered by strong cliques and requesting assistance/guidance from peers is returned with negative backlash and a sense that teamwork is only a term being used by the organization, but not applied by it's employees.

I can only assume all departments are not like this, however I can only speak concerning the one I am employed by. As an individual who has previously been employed by a few Fortune 500 organizations, I believe this organization has a lot of work to do to increase work life balance, create a "safe/open space" work environment and ultimately maintain employee retention.

You have 6 bosses that don't see any patients and thus do not bring in any money. The bosses just tell you to see more patients. It started out with treating patients every 45 min. Then 30 min. Then 15 min. In a 3 year time span. 
There is no opportunity for growth. They have you accrue 5 weeks of PTO but then deny requests to use it. Of the 10 coworkers I had, all of them had over 300 PTO hours saved up. I requested time off to sign papers to buy my house and was denied. My mother had to sign for me.  Then when you quit they only pay you out for 50% of your earned PTO. Unless you retire and then they give you 80%. Really nice way to say thank you for being a good employee and not using your PTO so that you could work and make them more money. I have regret about not calling out sick so that I could use my PTO. I was ultimately punished for being healthy. Use your PTO if you take a position. 
It depends on the office you work at and the manager. The managers are not trained to be managers. My boss had a health care degree with zero training in how to be a manager. It wasn't his fault he was a poor manager. He was never trained for that role. 
The medical benefits are really good. Job security depends on your office. I was transferred one year in because of hospital changes. That's the nature of all business. I pray for all the people who end up there working in a factory and all the patients who are billed for one on one care but are actually in a group setting.

My current function is social work/case manager on the Oncology/Stroke Unit.  I am responsible for early, proactive discharge planning based on a strong bio-psycho-social assessment of my client.  I work within an interdisciplinary team environment that includes physicians, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, and physical therapists.  Our team meets every morning to discuss the patients on the unit and the patients' individual needs as pertains to inpatient care and discharge planning.  My daily tasks include patient assessments, discharge planning, crisis management, referrals to community resources, coordination with insurance plans, and written and verbal communication with the medical team.  The hardest part of the job is balancing advocacy for the patient with strong fiscal management for the hospital.  The most enjoyable part of the job is working within such a wonderful, dedicated team of employees.  Overall, I have learned to manage chaos, work within a high stress environment and deliver excellent work in a timely manner.  The management team at Medstar is diverse and provides numerous opportunities for staff to initiate ideas and relay concerns.  Overall, Medstar Montgomery is a wonderful place to work.
