One of the most negative environments to work in. The job itself is fun, fast paced, and you can provide good patient care. Management micromanages you and threatens to write you up, fire you, or not renew contracts over anything even something as simple as a patient review of 4/5. They act like they care, they talk about "positive vibes", but all of their actions promote a toxic work environment. Aside from the threats, you're constantly short staffed, and then scolded for not doing your job as an NP plus your MA's work. There is no such thing as a lunch break, you eat a bite between patients if you get a chance. Because of their threats to write you up and the micromanaging, turn over rate is high. Forced to take patients till the minute clinic closes, meaning some days you don't leave till an hour after closing. Providers are salary, they are not paid extra for the extra work. Expected to see 10 patients in an hour because there is no organization and patients are not given time slots. Instead patients are given the unrealistic expectations that anyone can be seen right away even if you have 6 people come in at the same time. Patients will then complain about wait times on their reviews, and management will tell you your patient reviews are not up to "the company standard of 4.8" knowing the scores are lower due to things that are out of our control, but they don't care. MA's are not trained properly or might have said something to the patient which leads to bad patient care, which ends up as a bad review. To which the NP has to be ultimately responsible for even if they had nothing to do with it. They will talk to the MA about it but the NP has to carry the bad review as a part of their provider score which they will then be told they are not up to the standard of the company which just leads to more threats of a write up. Normal companies review a worker once a year, at most quarterly. Not this place, they review you weekly, meaning you could be told your not up to standard at least once a week. How do they expect to retain staff when the number 1 thing promoted is being written up. People should not have to work under constant threat and worry about job stability. It's sadistic!

There is a reason this company is constantly hiring. They hire under qualified MAs and expect them to be on their own after minimal inconsistent training. The hours are horrible and shifts always end up being closer to 13 hours. You get one 45 minute unpaid break for the whole shift and sometimes if it is busy you won’t even get one, and most of the time the break isn’t until the late afternoon. Clinics are super understaffed and if you try and tell management you need more people they will just tell you you’re doing fine and move on. Staff is incredibly unprofessional on Slack which the company is obsessed with. You are expected to react to and respond to messages on Slack even on your days off and if you do not respond quick enough you will get called out by managers. They guilt you for calling off if an emergency comes up or you get sick. Your schedule can also be changed at the mercy of the HR team if they need extra coverage or whatever comes up. A lot of the time they don’t even ask and you just get an alert that your schedule has been changed. They might send you to other clinics that might be further away as well. This can mess up your schedule sometimes and you end up working multiple weekends in a row which you are just expected to be ok with. The work load is incredibly mentally and physically demanding and not worth the pay/benefits. Management gossips a lot and talks badly about other staff. There is a lot of favoritism and if you aren’t a favorite you’ll definitely know. There are very unrealistic expectations for the staff and little support from management. Everything is scrutinized and you’ll get LOA’s for any little mistake. Very toxic and difficult place to work. 

I realize the state of healthcare by working at this company. management is totally disconnected from reality. No work/life balance at all, for instance their float policy works well for scheduling because they just take from one clinic and send them to another. They allow patients to walk into the clinic minutes before closing with no regards to the fact we work close to 13 hours with One45 minute lunch. I’ve met some of the most dedicated workers that are burnt out. If they were to focus on clinic staffing ONE at a time instead of floating workers all over the place it would be a smooth process. Writing things into “policy” is how they get away with abusing their workers. Furthermore, You are required to work back AND front which would be awesome if the FRONT wasn’t so chaotic. there are plenty of ppl who enjoy the front desk why not create a pool of workers for that purpose. I have years of experience in healthcare on the clinical side I am not a unit secretary. I am not a cashier as you also have to collect money from patients. A lot of the managers should throw on scrubs and spend a day shadowing not watch the cameras go physically be a front line healthcare worker. Bottom line for the amount of starting pay and expected outcome it isn’t worth the stress and it doesn’t seem like it will change. I’ve dedicated my
life to being in service of others as a healthcare worker. However when I see that management cares more about money over ppl policy over workers I leave.  This by far was the WORST company i’ve ever worked. I was so excited to start until I saw behind the curtain, i pray for change for those still employed there they deserve so much more. when companies lack compassion for employees it’s A BRIGHT RED FLAG. 

So, here is the deal about MEC- it is truly a "get what you give" kind of job. If you work hard, are reliable, and have a truly positive supportive attitude, then the sky is the limit. However if you're a big whiner and drag your feet, or call off work often, then absolutely do not bother. This healthcare establishment is the best I have ever worked for (and thats after working for multiple hospitals/doctors). People REALLY actually care here. A LOT. About their patients, about each other... it's amazing. So if you're one of those people that need that toxic non stop complaining environment, or are the type to say "I'm not doing that. That's not my job" then definitely do not apply to MEC. Even if you fake being a positive person or someone who really wants to work here on your interview, but then fail to give it your best once here, they will find out and they will not keep you. That's what I love most about this place! They do not tolerate garbage employees at any capacity and they mean it. If YOU ARE the type that is positive, can be counted on, and are willing to work under pressure then THIS is the place that will catapult you into the best time of your life- financially, professionally and mentally. MEC is changing the healthcare game in a BIG way!  

MEC has a family-oriented mentality and is extremely supportive when it comes to any issues or concerns you may have. The teams get along well and work together, which makes the day go by quickly and smoothly. We work 12s during the week and 10s when it is our weekend and you don't work every weekend which is a huge plus! Working 3/4 days a week ensures you have a good work/life balance and MEC is also great about giving you your requested time off. I don't dread going into work like most of my other jobs, now I'm ready to take on the day and take care of patients! As an MA, you learn a copious amount daily and get to do many different tasks, so you will never be bored! HR and management does their best to communicate and they are very responsive once you reach out to them if you ever need to. Everyone has difficult days at work, but knowing that I have my team to support and get me through the day always helps. The best part of my job is that I get to help patients everyday and make a positive impact in their lives! MEC loves seeing you grow within the company and they have many different opportunities to advance. Overall, a wonderful company to work for and I love my experience so far. :)

I was so excited to work here as a medical assistant. They told me 2 weeks of training, which is more like 3 days of training! My first 2 days of training was a lot of information, but they wanted me to get on the floor and start triaging by my 3rd day. Super nervous but I still pushed through even though I barely knew what to do and how to chart correctly. Then whenever I made a mistake, they made me feel like I was dumb for not understanding it. super mentally draining.  

Then on week 2 the staff was making subliminal messages on slack about me. Talking about me and laughing like that was professional to do. They then called HR same day and told them lies that was not true about me. I made sure I went home to my family and updated them about what was going on, they were shocked. I come from a family full of nurses so the way the company was handling things was sketchy. Another day goes by, and I then get a call while at work saying that the rumors are still spreading and that I had to go home because of it. It's like I was in high school all over again. HR did not come to the location to investigate the situation any further or talk with me, I just get sent home because of what everyone else is saying. No documentation of the situation or nothing just going off of what others were saying and I get sent home confused about everything. I liked my job but everyone made me so uncomfortable every day it was something.

A typical day at Midwest Express Clinic begins between 7:30 and 7:45 AM, and while the role has provided valuable clinical exposure, that is largely where the positives conclude.
The management style is highly involved—some might say excessively so—leading to an environment where employees often feel the need to second-guess their every move. While the clinic culture appears pleasant on the surface, this is almost entirely due to the camaraderie among coworkers, who do their best to support one another despite the challenges.
Despite frequent claims of valuing their employees, the company’s actions consistently reflect a different set of priorities. Providers and medical assistants are regularly expected to operate with minimal staffing and little acknowledgment, while the overwhelming focus remains on maintaining favorable patient reviews. Unfortunately, this emphasis on optics often comes at the expense of sustainable workflows and a healthy work environment.
Medical assistants are routinely assigned responsibilities far outside their job descriptions—tasks that would typically fall under management or marketing—and this additional workload is not accompanied by appropriate compensation or recognition. The overarching message is clear: profitability and public perception are valued far more than employee wellbeing or clinical quality.

When I started working with MEC I was assigned a trainer at my home clinic who made sure I was spectacular working front and back desk. I felt comfortable working independently before the 2 weeks of training were up and I was confidently working with a great team, no matter which clinic I was working from. For perspective, I have been working in healthcare for 5 years and in many different offices/specialties, so I know urgent care is the place for me. This never means I stop learning which is another thing I continue to do at MEC! With the help of our many overachieving employees, including medical assistants, providers, imaging techs, etc, most will enjoy or are willing to reach out to demonstrate clinical and administrative tasks. Personally, one of the best benefits of working at MEC is all of the opportunities to work your way up professionally, while continuing education in the field, so if you have the compassion and motivation to be in healthcare, I highly recommend starting or continuing with Midwest Express Clinic! 

I didn't mind the urgent care aspect of working this job and the pace was great considering your shifts are open-close typically. However, the need to be as fast as possible is not only unfair to the employees but the patients as well. This caused so much burnout and stress especially when everything you do is being micromanaged. They expected you to send a message for every single thing you did (including going to the bathroom), take 5 minutes maximum to triage, get a patient history, as well as vital signs and any lab tests done, and make zero mistakes in charting after being there for a couple of weeks. They would let entire families be seen together and then say you take too long to triage. On top of this, lunches were 45 minutes with no wiggle room and they kept changing the clock in times to earlier and earlier extending the shift. The shifts were supposedly 12 hours but they always ended up being much longer especially on busy days considering we have to clean the clinic as well (no cleaning crew). Overall, the people (MA's/Techs and providers) were great for the most part but management and the people above management were awful.

This company is run by some of the worst leaders I've ever seen. Leadership sends out constant threats of termination to employees. This occurs daily to weekly. There is mistrust between management and the providers/MAs who work there. The attrition rate is very high here as a result: there is constant turnover at every clinic. The company acts like they are doing things for the well being of patients (this is false). They will do anything they can to keep patients coming through the front door, even if the patients require higher level care and need to be evaluated in an emergency department. This demand comes from management with no healthcare experience or medical background. They routinely do fake phone calls/audit staff members. You are penalized if you get patients better and you have a low volume census. Multiple staff members have voiced their concerns, with no improvement shown by its leaders. It's no wonder that everyone leaves for something better (to be fair, it doesn't take much).
