I loved the opportunity to work with the children and met some amazing coworkers that became friends. The staff working with the patients are generally very genuine and care so much about the patients and the success in the care and treatment of the patients; however, due to turnover and other reasons for lack of staffing, management started hiring just anyone and not listening to the staff who are training new staff when they were telling them how unsafe the new staff member was in terms of being able to care for the patient and remain safe for themselves or assisting in keeping other staff safe, as taught. So, more injuries occurred, more unsafe staffing situations, and more rifts between the staff on the floor and the management. And when that would happen, staff on the floor would be written up or there would be a unit wide email or statement about how we needed to make sure we increased personal protective equipment or some other added job that staff would do instead of addressing the root issues of the inadequate staffing, inadequate protective gear, inadequate training and lack of support when reviews are being given of the new and ill-prepared or incompetent new staff. 
Management is not supportive at all, and they are all in cahoots about it. It's one thing to understand that it's a business and it needs to function a certain way for that to work and be profitable, but it's also a hospital for children and that needs to be considered when management refuses to listen to floor staff about the concerns they have for safety, staffing, and the patient care. 
A lot of hostility is present between floor staff and management due to the frustrations above not being addressed and concerns not being supported by leadership that is also rarely present let alone any actual help on the unit when it's needed. 
Also, if looking for a position here, consider how you might cope with the hostility between nurses and providers who don't respect nursing staff, disregard family, staff, and patient concerns.
All of the above is important to consider when looking to work in this environment, and none of that touches the problems that come with caring for these patients as a "job hazard", or the conflicting emotional struggles during and after the patient escalations and interventions. 

I loved my job at Children's. I worked in the behavioral health unit and everyday is different. I have been punched, kicked, spat on, called all kinds of provocative names, i've been threatened, and I have had patients throw things at me.  Mind you, these kids are can be anywhere from 5 years old to 17 years old. Our job is to maintain a safe environment, and report anything that the patient may be doing to try to harm themselves or others. You have self defense training before you can be put in a room with a potentially violent kid.you could do  1 of 3 things, sit in a camera room and monitor patients and track their actions every 15 minutes, roam on 2-5 rooms every 15 minutes and track what your patient is doing, or sitting (If a patient is violent or a flight risk) you will sit in a room with a patient for your 8 hour shift. in the event a patient becomes aggressive or violent, security is called and the staff will try to de-escalate the situation and if all else fails the patient will be put in 4 point restraints until they can calm down. Although this may sound scary to some people, the unit is not crazy all the time. There will be weeks or months with out any violent patients and we will just have patients who are in the hospital for having suicidal thoughts, who are bullied, or who have other mental health issues. The unit can be very fun due to the people you wok with or sometimes you can just have some pretty cool and down to earth patients who you play games with and talk to for most of your shift. There may be some weeks where we have a lot of patients who are aggressive or just want to run out of the room. I personally loved my unit. The nurses and other Constants, and PCA's were a pleasure to work with and for the most part you are working with people with similar personalities as you. there are so many people with different backgrounds and the unit works well to bring out the differences in each other in a positive way. I'd recommend this place to anyone who doesn't mind craziness and doesn't like spend everyday doing the same thing.

I enjoy helping people & I have a lot of empathy for children & their families.  I found working at Nationwide Children's Hospital to be very self rewarding.  I have good interpersonal skills, I get along well with others while getting the job done.  I am adaptable to all kinds of change & remain patient care focused.  I always try to remain positive even when others are negative.  I normally love working at Children's Hospital & I have received some great reviews from working there before.  However, I didn't have as good of experience this last time when I worked in Endocrinology.  My supervisor did not like me & I could not win with her.  She displayed favoritism towards  others & it was very cliquey there.  I saw myself making the same mistakes as others but theirs were laughed off & forgiven & mine were punished.  There are people in that department who don't do anything but constantly look for things that others did wrong so they can lay the blame on them, instead of being focused on patient care.  I feel like I was set up & sabotaged there.  I do not feel this way about Children's Hospital as a whole, just the Endocrinology department there.  The acting chief in that department does not know what she is doing & she looks to blame everything that goes wrong on the nurses.  The department is very unorganized & all they do is throw the blame around, the supervisor knows this but never does anything but hire more people, that there is no room for & not enough computers for.  She gave me a warning for wearing the wrong color pants but let the other LPN's where whatever they wanted.  The tasks, responsibilities, the schedule & where we were supposed to be at changed every day, minute by minute.  The supervisors know this but don't care to fix anything.  I love working at Nationwide Children's Hospital but their Endocrinology department is horrible.

First, the security management has had ZERO actual law enforcement experience, and they believe that one or two Columbus Police officers on special duty is sufficient to deter or handle a real threat. Plus, the hospital administration is so “woke” that they are too afraid to offend anyone by allowing the security personnel to be armed while IN A VERY HIGH CRIME AREA OF COLUMBUS and that the sight of a firearm might just scare the children and families!

They expect their security to confront possible armed subjects, patrol surrounding high-crime neighborhoods and in some occasions even stand in front of known gang members trying to enter the hospital during lockdowns!  

The security management have no real concept of security and no stones to stand up to hospital leadership in order to attain it. For example, they punish the security officers for “congregating” at checkpoints where they absolutely should have more eyes at those locations to be on the watch for suspicious activity. Instead, they look at it as being lazy and a waste of money. 

The turnover and burnout is beyond pathetic. The policies on time off are absolutely obscene!  You have to use earned time off for any federal holiday you take off.  And, in some places in the hospital, you need to put in at least a 3 week notice to take time off!

The ONLY plus for working at NCH is if you have kids. By taking them to any NCH facility for healthcare you don’t have much of a bill in the backend. 

My typical work day includes assisting the nurses and doctors in the ICU. I do an extensive amount of blood work, changing and turning patients, stocking critical and emergency equipment at the bedside, ensuring that all medical equipment and devices are in good working order, and assist the front desk.

I have learned a great deal while working at Children's, and also have had the ability and opportunity to pursue continued education through the hospital and on my own.

My manager is one of the most caring people I have ever met, and she is great at making the work place feel like a fun place to come into. She also excels in keeping everyone on task and keeps us feeling motivated to do our best work in order to ensure the absolute best outcome for all of our patients.

My co-workers are hardworking, attentive, and always ready and willing to answer any questions posed by family and staff. This helps to ensure a great learning environment for staff, and also puts families at ease to know exactly why the staff provides care in the way that they do.

The hardest part of my job can be the volume of patients on the unit, as well as the necessity to float to other units one may not be familiar with. However, I find my job is the most enjoyable when our units are busy, even if I am working on a floor that I am not familiar with.

I have no typical day.  Every day is a juggling act in research.  My best friend is my calendar and a to do list!  Many of days I will have to stop what I doing to rush to something else that has become priority, and I have to place a “bookmark” in my work to come back to when I finish the task that needed to be addressed.  
Day to day operations could be any of the following:
New activation of protocol (working with the sponsor on start-up essential documentation); training pharmacy, clinical staff, working with the Biosafety officer to write an IBCSC application, breakdown the protocol for feasibility meetings, IRB application, and Sit Initiation visits.
Enrolling Patients and maintaining patient files in accordance to the protocol, GCP and HIPPA guidelines.
I have sub-sites that I oversee, ensure that data is being completed in a timely manner, and in accordance to the protocol.  As well as coordinate any amendments that occur that need to be submitted to our sub-sites.  Maintaining sub-site regulatory records.
Mentoring new research coordinators
Training the Clinical Research Staff on OnCore; this is a data base that NCH is implementing for the Oncology studies to house all regulatory documentation, patient information, has the capabilities of creating CRF forms and patient calendars for real time use, as well as running statistical reports, and dumping into the DSMC.


NCH was vastly different than many of the other positions I’ve held as an RN. There is a great working culture, very positive and patient safety focused. My manger and team was amazing and upper management is better than most.

Benefits, however, are terrible- the worst I’ve ever had in almost a decade of nursing. No maternity or paternity leave, which I feel is a true outrage given that this is a CHILDREN’S hospital. I chose the “low” deductible plan, low being $2,700. A nearly impossible number to reach for a single woman who only has check ups and therapy. I was paying $135 per therapy appointment due to my deductible until I realized that I qualified for caresource a few months before my departure. I canceled my health benefits 3 months prior to leaving because I couldn’t afford to pay full hourly rate for my weekly therapist appointment which I needed to survive and cope with the difficult case loads, poor work life balance, and understaffing.

Overall, I would recommend NCH for their positive work culture- so much better than working with adult populations. Highly recommend reviewing benefits prior to hire. I would recommend just purchasing your own through marketplace or being carried by your spouse’s coverage if that is an option.

This probably varies between departments, but in my experience, those who "blended in" and followed pre-made flowsheets and joined pointless committees were rewarded, while those who tried to innovate and asked questions were punished. Management was more interested in receiving pats on the back with constant surveys to monitor approval than actually making changes to help employees. When disapproval was noted on surveys, individual employees were singled out and told why their input was "wrong." After asking questions and trying to improve my situation, I was punished and a backlog of "offenses" that had never been a problem were brought up and used as ammunition for reasons why I should be fired. When I complained about this, other employees similar "offenses" (ie: absences for last minute doctors' appointments and ill children) were suddenly brought up as being worthy of "corrective action." For a hospital that supposedly prides itself on mental health and wellness, the department I was in was very good at using the sequelae of my mental illness against me when leveeing punishments and gaslighting me to no end, saying that my experiences were "untrue." Overall toxic environment unless you can blend in and are a company man through and through.

Overall, my experience with Nationwide Children's Hospital has been exceptional. The hospital's commitment to providing top-quality care and conducting groundbreaking research makes it an incredible asset to the community and a leader in pediatric health.

I love my job and the work I do, but the division/dept I work in has some issues. A big thing that gets propagated in interviews is the idea that your colleagues are your family, but in my experience many have been the kind of family you avoid at the holiday gatherings. Dept leadership also shows a lack of accountability and favors the doctors' opinions rather than others' most of the time. There have been issues with a doctor's competence and wrongful billing and nothing was done despite multiple people bringing it up. Overall, it's a beautiful children's hospital with a lot of room for lateral advancement specifically, but there can be some dept specific problems. The health insurance also is a quite high deductible plan and I know a lot of colleagues who have had issues getting very basic things covered through it. There is also no maternity/paternity leave beyond FMLA, and before you can use STD/LTD you have to burn through all your PTO before the disability pay kicks in. You're expected to take PTO for every hour you're not at work, like leaving early for a doctor's appointment. For a hospital, and one that has "balancing life and work demands" as one of the values for employees, in practice there is no value placed on employee's health or "life demands".
