I selected both "Stressful" and "Relaxed" as descriptors of the culture, which might seem contradictory - but reflects two different parts of the work here. The first describes parts of the work that are unavoidable. Any social services provider will always have many day-to-day hardships and stressors; being a government agency in 2019, especially in the mental health system, has pronounced these ever more so. 

However, the second descriptor more reflects much of the team focus and togetherness that is embedded deeply in the culture here, and has continued through recent organizational challenges. I cannot personally bear witness to many of the challenges that my co-workers of color may face, but I have also seen much empathy, support and difficult discussion take place. Overall, I feel this is a place of understanding, compassion, and continual movement towards healing and unity. 

Job security is less than it traditionally has been, as the entire public mental health system is undergoing severe financial challenges. Pay raises are currently minimal for the same reason; however, starting wage/salary is very competitive for many roles. There has been a significant number of layoffs and retirements in the past few years, and we have lost a lot of experienced and valued team members as a result. However, management has responded well and we are continuing ahead with not only our day-to-day services, but also our in-process projects aiming to meet the needs of Kent County in the future. 

There is an extraordinary amount of attention paid to work/life balance here. Most of your potential co-workers are very aware, empathetic and understanding (a bunch of social workers - go figure!). Many good senses of humor here. Remote work and flex scheduling policies are very accommodating. Excellent benefits (very competitive medical plans, no employee premium for dental or vision, retirement account matching, etc.) Many non-managment employees here are union (UAW Local 2600).

Working for community mental health can be tough and underappreciated. But it is vitally important to some of our most vulnerable neighbors, and can be incredibly rewarding.

I got this job right out of college, thinking it would be a great starter job. Please know that to work at Network180, you HAVE to have a passion for crisis work. This was not explained to me prior to working there. Additionally, you're made to feel smaller if you don't have your master's degree. I worked in one of the psychiatric clinics, and the doctors were allowed to treat and speak to support staff anyway they wanted and we were told to just take it. My biggest problem that I personally had was I was dealing with a lot of chronic health problems that they stated they would work with me upon hire. They did not. I ended up getting fired for attendance due to my health issues when I repeatedly tried to get accommodations. I was in the middle of getting PTO gifted to me by HR when I was fired. My supervisor there told me the week I was fired I had "nothing to worry about" and that my job was secured. 

My biggest issue in general with this institution is that they are a company that has to worry about finances, so, at the end of the day, they will prioritize their budget over getting someone the correct level of care. For example, we were always told to try to talk the doctors down in the level of care suggestions because places like PHP or crisis residential were cheaper. It is understandable to worry about funding, however, at a CMH, a client's wellbeing comes first, regardless. 

The only pro is that there are some wonderful folks that work there. But there is a clear ranking, and if you aren't at the top, you are at the bottom.

There's a lot of stress in the world of mental health and substance use services, and you're going to find that with any employer in that arena.  This employer works well with staff to provide accommodations and really tries to develop and maintain their staff long-term, for multiple reasons.  They invest a great deal of time and energy (and money) to train that staff, so it behooves them to get a return on their investment (i.e. retention).  You can see that in the number of staff that have been here for 10+ years.  There's always opportunity for movement within this profession, but also within the agency.  The compensation is very respectable, especially when you look at other jobs in the market that are offering considerably less for similar work.  The staff are highly respectful of one another, and get along great, which I think you would expect in an agency whose mission is to improve the lives of others.

I worked in 2 areas within this organization and my total employment time was around 8 years.  I now have an LMSW but started with LLMSW and had supervision to gain full licensing through this employer.  I worked in the network180 Access Center doing crisis evaluations and referring to different levels of care for 5-6 years.  This was an exciting job but I ultimately changed to a slower-paced role in a different department.  I am relocating to a different state but would continue working here if I did not have to move for personal reasons.  As an LMSW or LLMSW this is a great place to see many different types of clients with various presentations and to get to know the system in Kent County.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Network 180 is an outstanding organization to work for offering excellent compensation with generous PTO and health coverage. Other benefits include HSA savings account and other retirement plans including 401K.

I currently work in our call center which can be challenging.

We strive to provide services to our community that include but not limited to mental health and substance use disorders.

The job is rewarding when it comes to helping the community. However, I get the feeling that this company is prejudice, why I feel like this is because they made promises to me that they could not keep. I was very flexible with this company, I worked on my birthday, I was at work helping them out when I should of been at home with my sick kids however being a single mother, I needed to do what I had to do. But they did not care, they treated me like I was a number at this company. You would think as is a company that strives and helps out with the mental health community, that they would not treat their employees like this? The pay is not even the best to be treated the way I did. Please look else where.

The job was so easy, but management was…questionable. Very ridged, they don’t like being questioned. I never took a lunch but would take 1-2 breaks a day and would often go on walks. On more than one occasion, my supervisor would call me on my break and ask me where I was. Sorry but if you can’t function without me for 15 mins there is a bigger issue at hand. Doctors are disrespectful and rude, very entitled with big egos. I really wanted to have a good experience here but unfortunately that did not happen. 

Working at Network 180 may initially appear attractive given the meaningful mission, decent benefits, and flexible scheduling, but a deeper look reveals systemic issues that made many roles burdensome and unfulfilling. According to numerous employee reviews, compensation was often below industry standards, especially in entry-level roles like peer support or clinical coordination, where staff were struggling to manage caseloads on salaries around $25,000 a year. Insufficient support, and a mismatch between mission and reality.

Pros include excellent pay and benefits. Most positions allow for some flexibility and remote work eventually. Current leadership tends to make decisions with blinders on, no bedside manner, little regard for how this may effect consumers and no apologies. It was not always this way and my hope it will not always be this way either, but right now, I cannot honestly recommend this company to my worst enemy.

I have worked at network180 for over 15 years.  Seen lots of changes with management, employees, funding, electronic health records and so much more.  If you want an easy, relaxed, non challenging  position this is not the place for you!! You will work hard, but its worth it because of the mission we have to serve the consumers in kent county in need. We help people with mental health issues, developmental disabilities, and substance abuse needs an do make a difference in people lives.
