New Horizons In Home Care

At New Horizons it took me a couple months to get a grasp on who exactly was in charge, who I needed to call with questions, all the new apps I had to download for the job and email addresses for payroll, attendance,  milage, general questions, etc (north and south offices are different). After I figured that out, the job itself is easy to understand. A typical day is different for every caregiver because every client is different. Some days you'll be doing nothing but driving and going from place to place running errands. Other days you might be cleaning non-stop. Then you'll be sitting quietly with a client while they watch TV for 5 hours. It just depends. In this job I've learned more about myself than anything else. Patience and decorum are essential to being a good caregiver. Always remain professional and kind no matter what. If problems arise, you have a whole company full of people at your back ready and willing to protect you. Workplace "culture" doesn't seem to exist in my limited experience when I am in the field. Because its just me and the client. Though I'm sure its different in the office. The hardest part of the job is having to enforce your boundaries with people (clients) who love your company and who want you as their CG specifically. When a line is crossed and you must enforce a boundary, sometimes that means severing care with that particular client, and that is very to do. Emotionally and mentally it weighs on you, and it feels like you're abandoning them. Sometimes its just not a good match between client and caregiver and thats no one's fault. The best part of the job is 1. The independence and 2. The difference we make in people's lives. It's real and genuine. Sometimes they're so grateful to you for coming and it makes your heart hurt. Its very meaningful what we do, everyday. 

Getting hired is the easy part, but because they will literally take anyone. When you're hired they tell you how the job will be - but severely withhold the reality of how stressed you will be working for them, or what your tasks actually entail (including lying about how much overtime you will be required to do, your pay, benefit, etc.). Management doesn't care about YOU as a person, only as labor, and will constantly harass/hound caregivers for covering shifts, or shame you for calling in sick or not staying for overtime, regardless if it's your day off, outside of your availability, if you're sick or an emergency comes up.

The office work environment is unbearable and filled with fake people who will tell you one thing, and do another. The rumor mill and drama are absolutely terrible. And if you have a problem and go to HR? They will likely not help you at all, or give you a solution that is 100% unsatisfactory but offer you no other options. Management also plays favorites. If you're not "in" with certain people, expect to be excluded.

Getting paid is an entire ordeal. Your check is very likely to have mistakes or get printed when you want them direct deposited, or held back from getting printed if you haven't turned the paperwork in or had a mistake on it, which they will also hound you to fix. Of course, everyone is being severely underpaid, regardless of your experience. 

This company crosses boundaries it shouldn't and creates a hostile environment where you are constantly lied to, verbally abused, and harassed. They skirt around laws and do not leave a space for you to feel safe, wanted, or appreciated. And at the end of the day, if you try to say anything about it they'll pressure to leave or find a reason to have you fired. Definitely avoid this place and save yourself all the drama! 

When I am assigned to a client I go to their house and conduct any care needed. Some of the care requires continence care, house cleaning, companionship, running errands, medication reminders or assistance, or stand by assist. I have learned that everyone has different needs, and has their own way of doing things. I must work to please the client in their care, as well as make them as comfortable as possible. The management at this company is very nice, but as a caregiver we do not deal with them very often. As a caregiver we deal with scheduling mainly to fill the needs of all the clients in a reasonable manner. We do not work with others from our company very often, unless it is during a shift change on a continuous care client. We are not able to leave until another caregiver arrives for clients who are under full-time care. It can be difficult when another caregiver is late. One of the hardest things about the job is doing things as the client would do, without having much knowledge how they had completed tasks before assistance was needed. For the client, it can be hard for them to constantly have someone in their home, helping them out because they feel like they are less of a person due to lack of abilities at times. But our goal is seeing that the client is always comfortable and is taken care of to the best of our ability. My favorite part of the job is seeing clients who are under 24 hour care, gain the strength, health, and energy back that they had lost. To see a client get better and able to do more on their own, is very rewarding because we know that we have done our job successfully to help get the client to where they want to me.

This company has its ups and downs. You get to create your own schedule in that you get to pick what clients work best for you based on needs and hours available. Their benefits are unclear as they don't talk to you about them until after you have passed probation. You also have to wait for a representative to come to the office to talk about it which happened to be at my 4th month mark as I was leaving. They offer onsite training so just about anyone can work for them. BUT their office was always super hectic. It seemed like the office people had no life outside of work as they were on call for emergencies and  schedule changes 24/7. You don't really have a supervisor. You complete paperwork on site of your client as to what you did for them and how long you worked (making it very easy to lie about what you did) and then turn in all of your paperwork at the end of the week. I found this irritating as I had problems with people falsifying what they did for clients.There were always hours to pick up if you wanted them as new clients were entered or people flaked out. The problem with open scheduling was that not all schedules were filled because not everyone wanted to work nights or mid days.I feel like this lack of structure hurts the clients in the long run. There is also the emotional stress to consider. If you're not good with watching people suffer or waste away, this job is not for you. It's not always like that but those are the clients that need the most help. Overall, I did not have a bad experience with this company; just a little frustration. I loved my clients and wished I could have done more for them. It feels great to help people!

Poor management, poor training, inconsistent, payroll issues caused many other problems when payday came. Had to cut me three checks before they got it right. Apps that are being used for work are not user friendly and below basic. Not even showing accrued hours worked for pay period. So much wrong with this company. If it wasn’t for the fact i only do caregiving for my family member i would definitely not be putting up with the high level of incompetence and inconsistency in pay. 
Staff is mostly friendly but this does not make up for the way this business is ran. They spend way too much time on things that are not important like “badges and prizes” instead of spending the money to properly train staff, proper training classes so everyone is on the same page, a WORKING app/s, not giving MY information and phone number to third parties to have them call about random things and surveys. Gotten calls a few times now from businesses and some survey that revealed they got my number from new horizons that i am an employee of and that they are indeed not an affiliate. I shouldn't have to tell my employer not to give my number out. Also i get spammed in my email constantly by their stupid “Workplace” which is set up much like facebook but where people go to talk about caregiving related stuff or random thoughts and opinions or holidays or simply to rant. I am quite annoyed by how often i get notified to go onto the social media site. Not sure if i can block it or not or if its required to have but it’s beyond irritating and unnecessary. 

There is a lack of communication or understanding. Clients are often not told information or told after I’ve informed them of details new horizons was supposed to inform client of. You often have to repeat yourself of your cliental preferences (smoking/non, pets/non etc). You will see people get recognition for 90 days or anniversary date however your recognition announcement might not even happen. You are supposed to get yearly reviews (with the possibility of a raise) on your yearly anniversary date however, this isn’t generally followed so you might have to bug them to get a raise or feedback. Personally, my mentor told me they would show to my first client with the company so I felt comfortable and at ease with meeting a new client, this did not happen.  Including the training requirements to get my HCA everything has been taught through my own personal experience or training not at the help of New Horizons. Lastly, when I gave notice I was terminating my employment (within 2 weeks) I felt like they couldn’t get rid of me quick enough. I was instantly blocked (same day) from accessing my paycheck early and all other work related app. While I understand access to such things become restricted once employment ends I still had time until my resignation date

Working at New Horizons was an amazing experience. Management was very kind and supportive in all situations. A typical day at work, I would get to residents place and would start by asking them what their goals were for the day. We usually chatted while they were getting ready for the day and then I started on the activities they wanted to get done for the day. 
Again, management was GREAT. My first time trying to take a day off, I did not understand the time off policy and was past the “deadline” for taking the next day off. But, the scheduler was understanding and did not dock me, he took the time to help me understand the call off policy. 
Workplace culture: This company truly want the best for their staff. I had worked with a resident one day who spoke to me very poorly and called me slurs. I had gone to my supervisor at the time in which she responded by talking to the resident, helping them understand that they must treat staff fairly just how staff have to treat residents fairly. My supervisor then gave me the option of if I wanted to keep working with this resident or not.
Hardest part of the job: I personally did not find any of the job hard. There were challenges. But management made sure I had full time hours constantly since that is what I wanted and if a resident called out for the day, they gave me options to pick up extra shifts. 
The most enjoyable part of the job was learning new skills and gaining new experiences within the New Horizons Community. 


So I was hired before they had hired the Big Boss guy. I've never had a boss that had bs'd his way to the top and bs'd his way into thinking he was better than everyone there. Usually with other bosses I get treated well, equal (as a person), and they understood problems and helped solved them.
 Discovered upon his first week as my boss that he now has the ability to give write ups. To the point that the department thought there must be a quota on write ups per day. Not a good 1st impression on the first week.
Employee overturn are higher than ever. In one year he fired the 19-22 long term staff that was working there before him so he could get new replacements. 
I was there for years, I learned a lot on the job. I loved my job actually, not always other workmates. Most enjoyable part was meeting and talking with patients/residents/people that appreciate me the way I appreciate them. 
*Hardest part is when I knew I was going to be fired soon and I had to accept that. My love for the job slowly evaporated because HR/management don't care for the employees. *Several people complained and the ones who did got fired. 
*I stood up for myself several times and I know I was on the radar. 

Absolutely do not apply with New Horizons if you need consistent work hours. This is a "Door Dash" type of job, which was NOT made clear at orientation. You may be offered a shift, but anyone else can claim it if you don't respond the second you're notified. Multiple clients have asked me why they always get different caregivers when they've  repeatedly called the main office requesting the same individual for a set schedule. Also, the client can terminate you at any moment. I lost consistent hours for reiterating company rules to the client that my job wasn't to wash the entire households laundry (just the clients). The company promises bonuses and mileage reimbursement, but you have to check your pay stubs constantly due to promises often getting "missed."
This job won't provide enough hours to pay your bills, and yet bizarrely enough the company is constantly hiring new people when there isn't enough work for those previously hired. Save yourself the agony of losing money by waiting for shifts, and apply to any other job offering set hours per week. Leaving my full-time job for a New Horizons "position" was the BIGGEST mistake I've ever made. This company is far from their commercials.

The actual work is great. If you have it in your heart to care for other people, you will certainly do that here, and you will meet some amazing clients. You will learn a lot from caregiving. The caregiving aspect is not the problem here. The problem is New Horizons. They don’t value caregivers like they should, they do all these amazing things on PAPER, like giving you benefits and having incentive programs. But in reality, when it comes down to it they do not care about caregivers. Even though Caregivers RUN this company (can’t have a care company without them), they are treated like the lowest level employees and like they do not care about them at all. You will experience loss during this job and they won’t tell you when someone passes away that you cared for for years on end. You have PTO but good luck getting to use it or actually getting the money from it.  If you have concerns about a client’s health, good luck getting to talk to anyone from the company about it— and if you do, they won’t care. They take on WAYYYY too many clients and don’t know how to handle the load. They do NOT communicate with you ever, or your clients. No communication, no appreciation, no respect. If you want to caregive, do it somewhere else, I promise you will have a better time.
