I have worked at Next Steps Community Services for a little over 2 years now at the Bethlehem Main House. I started as a DSP, was promoted to Team Leader, then Assistant Program Manager, and now Program Manager. I worked my way up the chain by showing up to work on time and showing my supervisors that I really cared about my job and that I took my work seriously. I'm proud to work for Next Steps and am truly grateful for the opportunities I have had here and the skills I have learned from my coworkers and supervisors. If you put in the work and show your supervisors that you truly care about what you do, you will move up in rank and you will be appreciated for your hard work. You get what you put in at Next Steps. Some go far and some do not make it very far at all. A positive attitude and strong work ethic means everything here. There are many opportunities to be had and lots of great learning experiences that can be applied to future jobs in this field. I think working as a DSP at NSCS is a perfect introduction into the field of human services. The new, high starting pay is amazing! There has never been a better time to start a career in human services than right now! The benefits and pay are excellent, and the staff are shown appreciation by management for their hard work. If you do a good job, you will be noticed for it and rewarded. Give Next Steps a try and give it all you've got. You will not be disappointed. This job can be challenging, but it is rewarding helping others who truly need it. I highly recommend NSCS to anyone that enjoys working with people and helping others. I applied to Next Steps after being unemployed for a decent amount of time. I heard about it from a friend who worked there and absolutely loved it. I wasn't sure if I was cut out for the job considering I had zero experience in Human Services. I felt very welcomed during my interview, onboarding and training process. I have been at Next Steps Bethlehem Main House for close to 8 months now and I love every second of it. The teamwork here is fantastic. Not only are the DSP's and Team Leaders great but Management and Leadership is the best I've ever experienced. I have never felt a passion for a job as I do this one. I have climbed my way slightly higher on the food chain as I am preparing to take on the role of Team Lead. Ive never felt more heard and appreciated then I do at Next Steps. I'm not saying this job can't be stressful because it absolutely can. As long as you have a positive outlook and a good work ethic I think anybody can excel here. This job is extremely rewarding. I can have a stressful day and still leave feeling good because I know I helped make a positive change in at least one persons life. The benefits and pay are a nice touch as well. Everyday is an opportunity to learn something new. I highly encourage anybody who enjoys helping others to apply! 

I have worked for Next Steps for a few years now. Most days the work is low impact and working with the clients can be fun, however, many staff are poorly trained due to there being no actual trainers and there is many loose ends so things can easily become unorganized. The pay isn’t great and unless you are living with someone else, paying for your own place will be near impossible. Highly recommend this for someone getting into the human services field, not for someone looking for long term employment as advancement in the company isn’t a given and can be rare. Those that do become team leads and managers are often not trained because of other issues through the company so lots of loose ends come up. The staff do, for the most part, try and make the best of what there is but the adult programs are definitely poorly funded compared to the adolescent programs. You will sit at the program most of the day and be expected to come up with quality groups for challenging individuals. It’s almost like being a teacher without the salary. 

As with any company, there is always room for improvement, but at Next Steps they go above and beyond for the individuals that they serve. In my personal experience at Next Steps, the treatment team (DSP's, Team Leaders, Clinical and Nursing) all work together to help each individual reach their goals. I have been in this field for a number of years, and this company does have the culture of respecting a work life balance. The typical day differs in each program, but there is a focus on social and emotional skill building as well as working with the individuals to have as much autonomy as possible.  The most enjoyable part of working at Next Steps is seeing the growth in the individuals that we serve and seeing the dedication that the staff having in supporting them. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
No support from bosses, training is a joke and they leave you vulnerable. Some managers take advantage of their staff on and off duty, very poor management. They don’t care about you as long as you cover shifts, just a pulse, and the clinician is not very helpful when you ask him for advice and guidance 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Right now we have enough staff but at times we are forced to work overtime and they don’t care about you or your family, no support from anyone, you are just a number 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic, the managers will pressure you and the director is no good at her position in my opinion, they joke with you and wait  pick favorites very difficult to deal with, that’s why I am looking for another job 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Come in and watch lazy people sit around and wait for the complaining to commence

If you work hard, you will advance. Due to constant call outs or people quitting, they constantly ask you to do overtime. People just burn themselves out. If someone who is well liked decides they don't like you, watch out. You will have a target on your back.  I just found some old paperwork from that job, and it literally gave me anxiety and made me sad. My supervisor blamed me for issues out of my control.  Imagine being told you are doing just fine and then all the sudden being hit with some sort of disciplinary action or vindictive treatment.  There were good days for sure.  But I often feel sick to my stomach when I think about my time there.  The clients were great though, challenging at times for sure. But if you have boundaries, respectful and are consistent you'll be fine.  There are a lot of great people there, but the bad ones just destroy everything.  

Management is the worse I have seen; they do not hold themselves accountable if they made a mistake on the schedule or if they gave you false information. Will disrespect you even after you stood your ground and voiced that you will not stand being disrespected. Will not treat you like a human being; they will purposely schedule you on days you requested off months prior, and place blame on you. You will work holidays, especially as a new hire - did I mention you do not receive holiday pay? If there is no staff to relieve you at the end of your shift, you are stuck there until someone shows up to relieve you. Literally- the worse job I’ve ever had; wish I had someone tell me to look for other jobs and not take this one. I hope this helps people like myself. 

Oh and the ‘benefits’ good luck with trying to sign up for their insurance. HR will not help you with the progress. This company claims they are there for you- one of the biggest lies they tell you.

Was promised a position upon hiring that was never given. You start the shift having to gather everything needed for your shift due to the lack of support from leads. However you get yelled at for being off of the floor. We went a few months without a manager, and I spent that time supporting my entire team, and the residents. Working up too 60hrs a week to help keep things running smoothly. Once we got a new manager they picked their favorites, and take everything they said as if it was the Bible. Everywhere has its gossip, however here? Is incredibly toxic. You'll be quilted into working hours even when sick. They'll take employees that never call out, and cause them to crash and burn. Write ups for things that they have no proof of, as they didn't happen. The residents are the only ones that make working here worth it. If you are someone that puts their heart and soul into what you do? Run. 

I have many years of experience working in the Human Service field and have worked with several different models in different states. Next Steps Community Services by far has been the most rewarding and diverse agency I have come across. The culture of the company fosters a team environment which includes many ways to spotlight and recognize employees for a job well done. I have not been introduced to any other place of employment where employee recognition is so prevalent. The "meet people where they are at approach" is taken and treatment to the folks we serve is definitely individualized. Highly recommended place to work.
