I had always dreamed of returning to my home town to work in VVMC with the desire to make a difference, and I could not have been any more misguided.
I left a beautiful east coast location to return home after receiving a job offer that was at best, a professional failure. During the interview, I walked around the facility and meet some of the staff where my reception was at best bitter sweet. My first week of orientation was nothing but a demeaning experience of being advised that I need to surrender my previous 3 years of critical care experience and learn "a new way of respiratory care". At this time is I realized what it truely meant to work for a facility that is not JCOH.
The co-therapist all have been there for a great number of years and refuse to allow more modern practices to be spoke of, (I.E using BAN nebs vs. inhalers for status asthmaticus patients). All therapist pick there own work assignment and heaven forbid if you attempt to assist with their work load with out their permission.
The department lead is poker faced and assumes no corrective action role. all rumors are assumed true and there for is quick to assign disciplinary action based on biased opinions.
The department as a whole received my presence as one would welcome a new onset of herpes. I was not permitted to express any opinions nor challenge my skills without any persons being offended. The department utilizes 2 sets of policies and procedures, one for the clinical and the other for sleep lab. these P&P's are interchangable and unchallengable and are able to be "tweeked" to the supervisors liking at any given time.
The department head is an RN whom has no previous respiratory experience nor does he exude any sense of ownership over the management of the department. The department medical director is a physician whom has been at VVMC for a very long time and though he does a decent job of accepting input from the therapist, he allows inexperienced "doctors" to manage the vents. Hyperoxygenation and nitrogen washout is very common practice with in the ICU and the preceding questions of "why?" are usually abundant after the extubation.
After my short period of time within my hometown hospital, I am sad to say that not only do I not desire to affiliate with them, but I would much rather die as opposed to let any person within VVMC attend to my medical needs.

Healthcare has been very challenging this past year in a half.  Despite the circumstances, I am blessed to work with truly amazing and compassionate colleagues.  Professionally, I have been treated with respect, earn an good living, and have vacation time, which I am encouraged to take.  Truly the hardest part of the job for staff who care for patients is being short staffed during this pandemic. More staff would enhance the workplace culture - less pressure.  That being said, the staff that is there are truly compassionate, despite the circumstances.  

My spouse recently visited the Emergency Department and I was able to really see, first hand, how he was treated and cared for. A 100% positive experience, given we all know ED wait times can be long.  Everyone explained what they were doing and continued to reassure as they went along.  Compassionate, knowledgable, and kind care. 

Since NAH is the only hospital in Northern Arizona, it provides a solid place to work and be part of the Flagstaff community.  You gain so many close relationships and whenever you are walking through the hospital, people are friendly and helpful.  

Enjoyed being part of the expansion of out patient infusion services for the Verde Valley Medical Center as a charge and staff RN.  Education was a large part of this growth and new opportunities to learn were always readily available. We would have appreciated keeping one clerical staff member to support the nursing staff.  This important job was not considered necessary and placed an added workload on the RN staff.  This was at times extremely challenging.  This problem  brought nursing management and the infusion staff together to find new and innovative ideas to remedy the situation. One solution was to incorporate other out patient services such as the scheduling department to assist in reducing the RN clerical work load and creating a "Relief RN" position. The ability to find solutions to problems was the strength of the RN Clinical Manager.  Overall, I really enjoyed my work in the infusion unit, and in particular, being able to be a part of the nursing staff creating a safe and healthy work environment for the people in the community requiring our services.

The physicians of HVCNA are top-notch and willing to educate their MAs, recognizing a more educated assistant is an asset to the practice overall. However, beware the spirit of the lone MA who started with the practice and has since left. When I was hired as a new MA graduate my training was not equal to that received by a similarly-hired coworker; I felt at a constant disadvantage despite repeated requests/opportunities sought to bring myself "up to speed." This specialist practice is data-driven, you must be at the "top of your game" every day to be successful.

Changes in daily management before I left the practice held the promise of positive changes amongst staffing practices and in creating a more unified atmosphere between clinical and administrative staff. The hardest part of the job was the feeling of opposing camps amongst staff - supervisors verses junior staff, clinical verses administrative, and further division amongst clinical staff.

You don’t want to work for this company. Salaries are subpar for the most expensive city in AZ. They think they are progressive because salaries are “comparable to other salaries statewide.” Flagstaff has a far higher cost of living than most other areas of AZ. Health benefits are overpriced and pathetic, especially since it’s a HEALTH CARE company. Most departments are chronically understaffed and turnover is very high. Management is the WORST. Top-down style of management that rewards only those who suck up to the person/persons higher up the chain, making them look good the people who are on a management level above them. This leaves all the low-level staff doing all the actual work with no one to advocate for them. Management at this company does not value their employees AT ALL. Low-level workers are viewed as disposable. Find a better place to work, even if it means leaving Flagstaff.

I wish more leaders were proactive and would roll up their sleeves to be helpful but everyone has their team priorities.
The hardest part of the job is having to attend a number of unproductive meetings with other NAH leaders to discuss productivity. It's a waste of time. 
The best part of the job is the team I work is full of incredible people who all want to help. They all want to create a beautiful product for our company. Our team's effort and enthusiasm proves that, while we don't directly interact with the patients, our work is designed to make their lives better.

As a former long term employee I witnessed a steady decline in the kindness, caring and trustworthiness of management from middle to senior level.  The last 3 years being the absolute worst.  I was fearful getting into trouble for any action.  You could be performing excellent work 99.9% if the time but that 0.1% brought trouble down on you so hard and fast that you doubted your skill, your worth and eventually eroded any trust in management.  Eventually management would focus on that 0.1% and your  are placed on disciplinary path to termination.  People write each other up and instead of discussing any of the issues, management believes it is true and makes you even more fearful, alone, paranoid and stressed out.

If you are looking for a workplace that values fairness, equity, safety, professionalism, and accountability, this may not be the right fit. Concerns about safety are often dismissed, and employees who raise them may feel retaliated against rather than supported. HR responsiveness is limited, and communication from leadership is frequently inconsistent and unprofessional.

What many longtime employees describe instead is a deeply entrenched culture of toxicity, favoritism, and double standards, where leadership protects its inner circle while frontline staff are expected to tolerate unacceptable conditions. Unfortunately, these issues appear to have existed for years without meaningful improvement.

Many employees initially had hope that new executive leadership would bring meaningful change and accountability, but so far there has been little visible improvement in the culture or treatment of staff.

FMC is a great place to work. It is a small community hospital that gets a wide variety of patients to keep your skills up to date. Your workloads are very manageable even on the busiest of days. As a therapist here you are well respected by Physicians and nurses throughout the hospital. You take control of the ventilators from intubation all the way to extubation via the vent protocol they follow. Management is great and only getting better in the Respiratory dept. Staff are very friendly and approachable. They support your growth and are willing to advance you as you desire. Their is a great culture here where everyone is respected in their decision making. The toughest part of the job is dealing with the staffing shortages every hospital is facing currently. 

Honestly I was so excited to start my job at Northern Arizona Healthcare. I have lots of friends that are employed by them and thought it would be a great place to work. After the second week of work I realized things weren't as they appeared.  In many departments their were cliques and if you didn't fit in your were an outcast. When ever you asked for help staff had an attitude like why cant you do it yourself. Management were not sufficient leaders and top tier management appeared to be more of bullies than mentors. HR is employed by the company so they go along with anything that the nursing staff suggests, there is no unbiased place to turn for employees. I definitely would not recommend this job to anyone I know.  They talk about a "just culture" where you can come to them if something goes wrong, in reality all staff does is finger point and if you happen to be the one they are pointing the finger at you are out of luck.
