When I first started here I was leaving a job I had been at for 3 years (and hated), so I was really excited for a fresh start. At first it was pretty good, but I learned very quickly that it wasn't all that great. A lot of people are out for themselves and very self-centered, while the managers continue to pretend that we're all one big happy family. I'm someone my manager can actually count on continuously (i.e. I RARELY ever say no to her requests) yet it seems like I always have to fight & compromise what I want and need for "the good of the team," while everyone else continues to disrespect her & still get what they want. Then when I decided that I didn't want to continuously say yes & be completely agreeable, I was told that I was not being a team player & was being negative. Also, the managers always say that they appreciate you & the work you do, but they don't actually show it. They only say it so that when the yearly survey comes out you can answer the question, "Does my manager appreciate me?" with a yes. If you make the mistake I did (being a "Yes" person), then they will use you as long as you'll let them. 

They're very strict on time (4 mins is late & will get you 1/2 an occurrence. Get enough occurrences & you'll get written up or fired. If you do get written up, you can't transfer or get a raise for a year...and the raise is only a few cents. They also require the Patient Registrars to wear a uniform (navy pants, navy vest or blazer, & an Ochsner shirt) but the only thing they provide you with is the shirt. You have to search different stores to find the very specific color of navy pants they want you to have (they don't sell them in the Ochsner store), & then spend some ridiculous amount of money on a vest or blazer & get the Ochsner logo stitched on it. As far as the MAs & nurses go, they don't provide any scrubs for them.

Of course you can apply to other jobs to move up the ladder from within the company, but if your manager isn't pushing hard for you, then it's very likely you're application won't go anywhere & you'll stay stuck in the same position.

I've been told the office culture at the east bank locations is a lot better than the west bank, but I've only experienced the west bank locations.

Ochsner is about the patient and the patient experience. 
If you're in it just for a job and money then you're in the wrong place to do this. They often do not pay as much as the other health care systems. In the past year or so they have diverted from work-life balance and focused more on micro-managing some areas. When they wre focused on the employee as well as the patient then things worked better. This may depend on the department and specific people in the management positions. They are often quick to write you up for something even something small in comparison to other things and are sometimes unforgiving. Last year they were doing evals for employees and many had good/meets expectations or exceeds expectations and were on target to get their raise at the end of their quarters but then management found ways to write them up before the end of the quarter which prevented them from getting the raise. They went out of their way to do this. Yes it happed to me but it happened to many, many people at least in the Baton Rouge region and we all assumed this was due to the new clinic off of I-10 that went over budget and also cuts in insurance reimbursement. It's sad that they did this to people that have worked there for a very long time. Know that when you have worn out your welcome or if they want you out they will work to push you out the door so that they do not have to pay unemployment. I enjoyed working at Ochsner for many years and my patients loved me but new nursing managers that came into the departments made life difficult for well establshed employees that kept the departments running when they were without nurse managers, etc. Know that I wouldn't have stayed with Ochsner if I disliked it that much. They were one of the best employers that I've had. I had come to the top of my career/position without having to go back to school to pursue more or pursue other employers to get a higher wage. I remained at Ochsner for several years without getting a merit increase because I liked my employer and coworkers. Ochsner is about Ochsner and patient care. They're not about the employees as much as one would think but this is the same with any employer. It's about providing quality service and patient care.

I enjoyed my time at Ochsner Health System. I worked at the main campus on Jefferson Highway. From the moment that I was on board, my knowledge about the health care industry has massively expanded. Everyday was a new learning experience. Even learned things that was not in training. Performed job duties that was not part of my position. Worked different departments in a timely manner.
   The management was great. My manager, supervisor and the director of the admitting department was always present and always available to reach out their hands and help out whenever I came across any issues. As great as they all were, in all honesty, the management lacked in effort when it came to following their own core values. All that put aside, they are the kind of management that can definitely run a team accordingly.
   My co-workers were always there to help as well. Never a dull moment with everyone that I worked with. Got along splendidly with every single one. Every one shared their experiences and tips to keep everything going as smooth as possible.
   Ochsner was always busy. From left to right, responsibilities were always there to be fulfilled. I would have to say that the hardest part of the job was making sure that all of my duties and responsibilities were finished correctly and finished in time before it was asked of me. Working different departments, filling out different paper works, collecting all types of information and keeping everything on a reasonable pace was tough, but I always managed through it. All the hard work always payed off knowing that I executed my job right. Being confident that every patient was taken care of from my part on the next step of their visit was always the most enjoyable part of my day and the most important part of my job.

My time at Oschner was one of the most depressing times of my life. Management does not care for their employees, much less their patients. Conversations with upper management were scripted with zero personality. Managers received training and were directed to speak certain ways and not to stray from their "scripts". This prevented any personal connections with the leadership team and the workplace lacked empathy. 

Nurses were staffed at the minimum regulated guidelines, regardless of the level of patient care needed. This leaves many patients to not receive the attention they needed. Management was more worried about reducing overtime and labor costs than about taking care of patients. There are also med-school students doing procedures in the hospital without a doctor present, which is a whole bunch of liability reasons in itself. I wouldn't trust them with my care. 

The region went through 3 CFOs in less than 3 years, which says a lot about the place. Turnover was extremely high, and anything you would do that so much as ruffled a feather, you were put on a disciplinary plan, at which quitting was your best option, rather than risk getting fired at any given point. 

No matter how good of a worker you were, you could not break out of your shell and work on projects that interested you. Rather you were made to conform to your manager or be let go. As a highly educated employee, I was appalled by the way my department was ran, and how promotions were given based on social status, rather than experience and education. 

I lost all confidence in my work and hated my job until the point that I quit. Don't fall for the "best places to work" BS. They force employee engagement surveys on you and they are tagged to your manager. In small departments it is very easy to pinpoint any negative feedback, so it encourages employees to give positive ratings on every metric, not matter your true feelings.

The job of an interpreter at Ochsner Health Systems is not a bad gig but the problem was and still is,  it's full of toxic employees. Management doesn't care about the situation and sometimes exacerbates and encourages the situation. Also, the job required lots of driving using your own means of transportation. Ochsner's  miles reimbursement policy are below industry standards and the driving is relentless. Lastly, the place became a revolving door of policy changes and employees were forced (not asked) additional job responsibilities without additional compensation.  I wasn’t just an interpreter anymore but I was performing additional responsibilities outside of my job description. By the time I decided to leave, the job had changed so much that I felt like I had accepted a completely different job from when I started.
Please be careful with this job. It's plagued with favoritism, social clicks and managements pets.   There are individuals working there that are not only great workers but really good, decent individuals. Workers who are very dedicated to servicing the patient and who haven’t forgot that their job depends on patient's satisfaction. Unfortunately, these individuals are dismissed and stepped on by a small minority. The rules are made by an authoritarian, control obsessed, small group of individuals who micro-manage and treat the rest of the employees with complete disrespect. Please, before you take this job make sure you ask the right questions and think if this is the type of work atmosphere you want to work in. I realize this is review is long but I wanted to be as detail as possible because if I would’ve known these facts, I would’ve never taken this job. Life is too short to work in a place where the employee is under appreciated and treated unfairly.

Working with my co-workers and the doctors was wonderful. The doctors in this organization truly are some of the best that I have seen and worked for. They care deeply for their patients and will stop at nothing to find a solution to their problems. But the management is horrible. They barely set foot in the department and have no idea what we do on a day to day basis. Most of them have a business degree with absolutely no clinical or medical experience yet they come into the department and try to tell you all the things you aren't doing to their satisfaction. You are improperly trained and then punished when you perform a task that you were improperly trained to do. 

After a year in my permanent department, I never even got a verbal warning. When I was transitioned to the "float pool" after being out for surgery, within a month of being back, I was put on probation due to being improperly trained in a department I had never worked before. It did me no good to plead my case. They were dead set on punishment and then I could not transition back into a permanent job until probation was up. It's horrible. You have a nurse who wants so badly to excel and learn and move forward in her career and be placed in a permanent department but instead of encouraging this growth, we are punished and restricted from advancement.

 I am disgusted with this whole ordeal and very saddened that an organization that I once raved about is now doing this to employees. I am not the only one. The turnover rate is becoming astounding. I know 4 other nurses who have resigned just recently and 3 of the 4 want to pursue a completely different career because nursing for this company has burnt them. And people are asking why we have a shortage of nurses.

One day the telephone was ringing the call light went off letting me know that a patient was calling so I answer the phone an it was someone calling to ask for the location of Ochsner in Kenne. I gave the family member the location to KennerI ask them could help them with anything else, they told me no. I ask them if they have any other problem please give me a call back. At that time I ask the patient was calling on the call light, I said Good Morning how could I help you,she told me that she need some coffee, I call the nursing assistant to the deck at that time she was in the room ith another patient. I ask a nurse to please watch the monitor for me so I coold get the coffee for that patient. I brought it to her,she told me thank you. That day the patient gave me a smile like that was the best coffee she ever had, I learn to always take care of the patient like you take care of your family an like you want someone to treat you with kindness and love with respect,nobody never know what situation they will be in. I'm a type of person I get a lone with anybody, I believe in communicating with other, because that the only way we learn by asking questions and talking with each other. I love to smile when I'm talk to someone and I have to give eye contact when I talk. Sometimes I might have problem with the Doctor writing,but I ask the Charge Nurse or the Doctor before he leave could he please read the order back to me so I could make it right. I'm a type of person believe it or not I love to work. I know that I will be a responsible and a reliable person you can depend on.

For everything to run smoothly, all the pieces and mechanisms need to be working together. The type of culture found in the area I worked? It was cut throat. This cut throat culture was far from effective, it bred a culture of information hoarding and an inappropriate level of competition that was counterproductive to attaining organizational goals. Coworkers striving to be number 1, rather than focusing on being on THE team. Entirely to much gossip, drama, and disloyalty amoungst coworkers. It was like being in middleschool;  longing for the bell to ring so you could go home...
They really need to reevaluate their training methods and focus on the individual and the specfic job they're being trained for...WAY to much time spent on a computer training!
Also...Instead of coworkers training coworkers? They need a lead trainer. A trainer that knows how to train people "AND" that is the trainers only focus and only job, training!  This would allow a new employee one person to go to, to ask questions, and get support. By doing this you'd avoid coworkers having to judge coworkers; work processes/skills or struggles. Coworkers should not be able to evaluate or criticize coworkers work/training or guide them if they lack a skill.  Allowing this leads to gossiping about what is/isn't right with the new hires performance with other coworkers. Also, don't train now for something an employee will need in 2 weeks or 2 months. Segment employee training, and try to plan it so that they'll be using it as much as possible after the training is over. They'll retain more, and you'll waste less time having to retrain overloaded employees. In summary lack of teamwork, poor hands-on new hire training, unprofessional/immature coworkers, no consistent new hire guidance. 


Ochsner can be a great place to work—especially when you're part of a strong team with good management. I started from the bottom and worked my way up, so I know firsthand that growth is possible. However, it's important to be cautious about what you say and do. Unfortunately, some managers let their positions go to their heads, and the focus shifts away from employees, providers, and even patients. It starts to feel like everything revolves around management's interests instead.

The pay is disappointing, especially considering the dedication of employees who travel long distances, often rotating between campuses. It's disheartening that they aren't even offered gas mileage reimbursement.

Ochsner used to have a reputation as a company that was difficult to get into—a place people aspired to work. Lately, it seems standards have dropped, and hiring practices feel rushed and inconsistent.

Another major issue is time off. They don’t like when employees take time off, even when it’s necessary. It creates a stressful environment where people feel guilty or pressured for using their earned PTO.

Having worked in both the hospital and clinic settings, I can honestly say I don’t see myself returning. I’ve never experienced such dysfunction and disorganization in a healthcare organization.

Ochsner, I hope you take this as constructive feedback. Treat your good employees better, let go of those who aren’t contributing positively, and refocus on what really matters: your people and your patients—not just profits.

I have met a few great people here at ochsner. Management needs to be revamp meaning management classes should be a requirement because these people don't have a clue. They are racist, clickish and down right disrespectful a person that's confident, hard working ,responsible, dependable  and loyal to this company and concern about great patient care has no place at Ochsner because you won't be respected if you refuse to be disrespect they frown on that if you allow them to talk to you any kind of way you all in which I don't understand they laugh and smile in your face like they have your best interest but it's not true they could care less if you come up with a better work flow to accommodate patients in a timely manner they shoot it down like your incompetent because they didn't come up with the idea it's no good I've never worked for a company that  try to sabotage your career and lie on you just to make themselves look good the schedule is ridiculous and who ever make it don't have a clue as to what they are doing I've never had a supervisor that I couldn't confide in will turn on you to throw their weight try to confide in upper management is useless sad  not very family oriented future employees BEWARE!! Always crying about patient care but that is not what their action shows how do this company expect employees to be productive in taking care of patients when there's always drama in the department very high turn over READ THE BOOK MARYS MONKEY AND REALLY KNOW THE HISTORY OF WHERE AND WHO YOUR WORKING FOR
