OMC can be a great place to work, depending on your role, department, manager, and teammembers. They are trying hard to improve, but they have some serious drawbacks.

They do not train their aspiring leaders how to be good leaders or managers when they move into a higher roll with people under them. This is very problematic, causes workplace dynamics issues, and disorganized teams. Dispite the desire of the teams to work well together and on the same page, it is common to receive a variety of answers from different  people or sources when asking questions that should only have one consistent answer. This makes it difficult to learn, know which sources to trust, and figure out which practice is accurate.

When you are delegated to take on a different responsibility,  there is little to no training. You are expected to fall on your face in order to learn. "Everyone has had to learn that way."

Most of the other workers are great to work with. There is a strong effort to make this a tight knit, family like group. But in a lot of departments, there are definite "favorites" based on who will stroke the management's ego and gossip behind closed door with them. 

Because workers who are selected for management roles do not receive any training on how to be a good manager, a person could be good at their job, promoted, but a terrible leader and that greatly impacts the workplace culture. That, I think, is one of the hardest parts of the job. On top of this, if a manager has too many complaints, including HR complaints, against them, they are typically just moved to a different department to be the supervisor or manager there. This doesn't fix anything, but it does temporarily make the problem go away without having to do any training, demotions, or letting people go who have proven time and again that they are toxic to the entire system.

In spite of all this, I see OMC trying hard to "get it right", improve, fix the negatives and move forward to become something better than it was. Starting from the top down. I hope it works. It can be a good place to work with good teammates and job security. 

Our direct supervisor was amazing, love her to pieces miss her every day. However, upper management blatantly disregarded any and all complaints we had about the rapid changes. 

Upper management ALSO repeatedly referred to us workerbees as "bodies" which made it clear where we stood as unimportant. 

I think it's crazy to treat the 'face' of the organization so poorly. Especially when the company collectively is doing so poorly.... 

The general public seems to think this organization doesn't care about their healthcare, and after working there, I can't say I disagree. There are so many people within each department that want the best for their patients, but the higher-ups? They dont and if they do they need to learn how to show it.

You wouldn't be able to keep up with the changes in the registration department even if you were sonic the hedgehog himself...

The coworkers were so amazing though. 

I had to resign from my position, due to several nurses wanting my help with reporting s harassment from a Physician.  I felt I could resume employment at other job locations in the future, and I did not want to risk retaliation. Upon providing extensive evidence to the HR officer, and CEO, the Physician remained employed and I was deselected for another position that a hiring manager wanted to hire me for. This organization promotes s harassment and misconduct, by black-balling reporters and covering for Physicians. Even worse, I had to resign from another community agency, that relied on the hospital for referrals, after the hospital refused to make referrals with me as an employee. This was an emotional, and financially devastating experience.

OMC was a wonderful place to work. Autonomy in the work arena. No work place anxiety. Radiologists would take time to teach us about various exams, to show us what to look for, especially in complicated cases. Immediate supervisor was always proximal and her door was always open to talk.. I worked evening shift M-F with another tech and so a lot of our work was ER related, which meant more trauma type exams than would be experienced working the day shift in the clinical arena. We also spent time in the OR when required. We supported such cases as laparoscopic cholecystectomies, hip replacements, femur roddings, kidney stone chases, pacemaker insertions, porta-caths, and various other extremity surgeries.

The department with which I was affiliated was poorly managed. Salary was below market for the area. Department director does not have the education, experience or background to manage the clinical services.

Other professionals in the department took advantage of this lack of experience to allow inefficient use of time, less than optimal patient care and lack of progress or use of best practice methods.

High turnover in dietitians (5 in less than 12 month period).

Hospital is top heavy with directors/managers. For an average daily census of 45-50, there are at least that many managers/directors if not more.

My shift consisted of the 5am - 1:30 pm, usually 5 days a week but also 6 days if coverage was needed.  I completed AM rounds at the nursing homes three days a week and hospital rounds on the days where nursing homes was not assigned.  I worked remaining hours doing hospital rounds for both Inpatient and Outpatient.  I also assisted with blood draws in ER when a trauma was present.  After lunch I worked as one of three couriers, driving supplies between other lab sites/clinics and as well as specimen pick-ups.  Voluntary coverage included additional night shifts.

I have worked at several places in my lifetime and I have to say this was the most enjoyable place I have ever worked. Awesome co-workers and management. I was treated with respect and consideration at all times.

During my employment I suffered the unfortuneate experience of losing a loved one unexpectedly. Without hesitation my manager stepped up to connect me with the necessary financial assistance to make an otherwise difficult situation be much less stressful. I would recommend working for OMC to anyone. They are pretty stand up!

My only issue was the pay. I have 30 years experience in my field and I started at a level three pay scale. That is the only reason I chose to seek employment elsewhere.

I am so grateful to work for OMC! My team is outstanding and upper leadership genuinely cares about employees, our patients, and the community. We are so fortunate to have such an amazing hospital in our rural area. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to contribute to the community by working at OMC and I hope to remain here throughout the remainder of my career.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The environment is easy going.  The Health Information dept is a great team and manager & supervisor are excellent.  I love my position as ROI Technician & Birth Registrar.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Work load, it can be overwhelming at times and records are time sensitive.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
In the H I M dept, it is team oriented and co-workers and management help each other to help with the work flow.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Happy.  Work flow is pretty consistent and constant.

In this job I volunteered in the hospital gift shop.  Although this was an unpaid position, it offered a non-monetary compensation that was truly heart-warming.  It was a pleasure to be able to be the "bright spot" in someone's day, whether it be an employee having a stressful shift, or a patient's family member dealing with a loved one experiencing serious health challenges. 

As at St. John's Medical Center, one of the most rewarding parts of this job was the annual allocation of funds to fulfill the "wish list" items for the various hospital departments.
