Let me start off by saying I loved my city's immediate and coworkers. I'll get all the good stuff out first. Managers are extremely nice and caring especially considering how much they endure themselves. My manager/coworkers and I were extremely close to the point where you would think we were brothers/sisters/aunts/uncles based on our playful fights and arguments. Many people actively hang out with each other outside of work. The providers (nurses, doctors, PAs, etc) are extremely nice as well and don't feel the need to throw around their titles. Both managers and doctors (at least in my experience) actively listen to suggestions and solutions from admin. Company rewards you for just about anything, but in the payment of food and small offices parties. There are opportunities for growth and even movement into other sectors of the company. You also have the ability to work from other offices around the country. The office culture is super relaxed, but not to the point where it affects how the office is run nor patient care. You learn a lot about patient care and yourself. This is a great post graduation job or getting a feel for the medical field. It definitely helped me realize my short and long term career goals, especially since I didn't see myself working for them for the rest of my life. I will say it is hard to get fired from company unless you are just not doing anything at all. They meet you where you're at and help you in areas that you're lacking in. I was trained for a decent amount of time, but I've seen them just throw employees into the role. Luckily, like I said there's a sense of community, they're patient and they don't put pressure on you to know everything right away. Even if you don't know something, there is always someone that's willing to be patient and help you.

Ok let's get into the nitty gritty...

Company isn't necessarily run by people are genuinely interested in healthcare. Most of the admin I came across were entertainers outside of work. In my opinion it can really affect their ability to empathize with patients especially from certain backgrounds. Everyone puts on a certain face in front company and CEO visits. They try to focus on patient care, but numbers and results are prioritized.

I noticed early on how quickly employees either quit or moved into another sector of the company (roughly 1-2 years). Of course you have your employees that stay longer. Those are the ones that are trying to work their way up or staying for the $2 raise you get every year. Hourly rate is not enough for the amount of work admin do, especially considering that they have you working for multiple cities. Company pressures you to take on more roles, but without the pay. Eight hours of getting verbally abuse by patients and you also want me to play doctor, therapist, phleb, supplier, and event coordinator? Nope. In cities like mine, there are simply not enough admin to handle the workload. Certain districts tend to get swamped in work and cities like mine will have to take on their work as well. I think this could be due to their long hiring process/onboarding (2-3 months). Then they continue to open up new offices?????

 Company mostly caters to affluent/advantaged patients despite claiming to cater to everyone. These advantaged patients get away with child-like behavior compared to the few disadvantaged patients we do come across. They tend to open offices in areas with money and office parties always avoid "urban" areas. Based on my experience this is due to people from other states moving to cities that know absolutely nothing about the city and listening to every single thing they hear on the news. 

Admin handle a lot of calls that should be handled by employees higher up, but the company ( I think purposely) makes it harder to get in touch with those employees. All we can do is take a message and pass it along. We get cursed out when those same employees don't return phone calls/messages. 

Virtual medical team is extremely rude and condescending. I sorta understand because they're understaffed too. Admin handle calls of course and message virtual team when it goes beyond our scope. While you still have the patients on the line, they ignore your messages or instead of talking to the patient themselves, will give a script to say back to the patient. Now all three parties are frustrated with the he say/she say game.

Providers are swamped with work and note taking. They don't space appointments out enough for some of the complex issues that patients come in with so there are times when providers and admin are staying overtime at work. Managers are swamped with work and random company changes. There were a lot of times where the managers couldn't answer our questions because the people above them weren't answering their questions either. It sucks, but I will say again and again, my team made it work and we made lemonade out of lemons (I know I said that wrong).  What was acceptable one week will be completely different the next. Changes happen often and are implemented quickly without the proper training. You just go with the flow and ask questions later. I've witnessed a lot of mistakes happen because of this. 

 I had the most diverse office, but when we would have big company meetings, every office looks pretty uniform and has a certain look. The company significantly lacks black providers. Personally, I was also disappointed when the company didn't even acknowledge black history month. They celebrate and make themes for every other holiday/season, but conveniently skip over black history month. If they knew anything about healthcare, they would know that many of today's discoveries and innovations were only  made possible by testing on black anatomies (slaves and without consent) and black health professionals. Medical Apartheid would be a great place to learn and appreciate an important part of healthcare/history in this country.

Whew...

On a lower scale the company is not too bad, but on a larger scale they stress and pay may not be worth it. All in all admin carries this company on our backs and see little reward for it besides snacks.

One Medical gets your attention with thier “too good” to be true mission and how their different from other companies in that they care about their employees. Once your on boarding and training ends though, you are pretty much left to your own devices, especially, if you are an admin. You are automatically expected to take on additional rolls/tasks that you weren’t properly trained to do or even being fairly compensated for. 

Whenever you try to bring up any valid concerns you are gaslight and belittled. Management will say they are there to support you but all they really do is micro manage you and set “expectations” that aren't always attainable, especially, given how short staffed many offices are and how complex and tedious the tasks can be. There is never any downtime because you have to keep taking on tasks on the side which are kept track of. They care more about meeting “metrics” than actual patient care or providing adequate support and going training to those of us who are keeping the office afloat. 

Whenever you are told to communicate if you need additional support or training, you aren’t being given the time to learn or absorb much of the information. They will overload you with information during your training and then at any given time, the higher level management can make sudden changes to the “standard” work without giving admins any prior notice so you have to unlearn or relearn something again. Since the company went public, their focus has been more on expansion than maintaining their current offices or supporting existing staff.  

Bottom line, instead of feeling like you are in the healthcare industry, the environment ends up feeling more like a corporate clique and it all comes down to whether or not you fit in with the “culture” and are willing to take on additional work/tasks without additional compensation or even adequate training. There are always tons of meetings/huddles to participate in but whatever concerns are brought up or discussed during them don’t seem to get addressed. 

OM is too focused on expanding quickly and putting profit over actually improving the quality of care for patients or offering better support and compensation to help retain existing front desk staff who are expected to just roll with the punches. Last but not least, colleagues will make you feel like they care but will then go behind your back to report you for the smallest thing you say or do. The attitude seems to be anything  can and “will” be used against you.

 As others have mentioned, this is a great place to get experience in the healthcare industry and take advantage of some of their perks  but not a place you could see yourself growing in as opportunities are limited and the role and requirements are constantly being changed without notice or proper compensation. 

When you interview for a job, you never know what you're really getting yourself in to. Just like you, the company is trying to sell the idea that they are a great place to work for, the people are awesome, and that you're helping the company make money to help benefit others. Well...THIS IS THE PLACE! The Culture - the company fosters a transparent culture where they share everything from the jar of peanut butter in the cupboard to the financial situation such as investing efforts. But there's no doubt that as soon as you are hired and you start to talk to other people in the office, you realize that you're all similar people except you have differences that helps you mesh well together. If that at all makes any sense!?! :)

The People - let me tell you...the work is not easy! It's a lot of hard work and it helps to be surrounded by people who understands. We all know we're working hard to change healthcare and who knows, maybe we'll all change the world somehow. But for now it certainly feels good to work with some of the smartest and biggest hearted people you know.

The Company - being that I have worked since I graduated back in 2005, I appreciate the transparency the company offers. There are going to be times they can't share everything but at the right time, they will share that information with you. I have never met a leadership/executive team that sits on the floor with their staff and you can bump in to them in the kitchen and have a great conversation about anything! It's always awkward at first but it's like that with the start of any relationship.

There's not much to complain about and the benefits are pretty decent. There are two things I'd like to mention: (1) I do miss the matching of my 401K from my other jobs. Even at my very first job at a startup, they still matched my 401K. It may have not been a lot but every little bit helps! And (2) there could definitely be MORE culture! It surprises me that we as a group don't do more together. I totally get the whole saving money to do bigger and better things but it certainly doesn't hurt to take the team out every now and then for some drinks, apps and bonding over hobbies and favorite sports teams.

All in all, I am really enjoying my time at Iora Health! My team is great, and the work is challenging. But for me the best part is feeling like I am playing a role in helping change the world of healthcare to what it should be. A place where the care is more important than the quantity of people you bring in to your health offices.

What is the best part of working at the company?
There's no secret that as Medical Assistant and Phlebotomist that a lot of doctors are rude to us and don't appreciate us in a lot of medical facilities and we are often under paid and over worked. Not One Medical. Every Doctor I've encountered here is kind, patient, and don't treat you like you're beneath them. They speak to us, thank us all the time and treat us with kindness and respect. This is the best job I've ever had in this field. Also One Medical is very kind and tentative to people from all walks of life and is very big on diversity and I never seen a place so wonderful and tentative to the LGBTQ+ community like One Medical. I love working here. My training was great. I wasn't just thrown to the wolves like most jobs do you in this field. I still have plenty of help and support whenever I need it. I'm a float and I work at a few of One Medical offices and the work environment is so warm and welcoming. I truly appreciate my job at One Medical because I know my experience at work will be positive, I look forward to coming to work. We need more Medical Facilities like One Medical.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
It's not real stressful most days. On our very busy days like Monday and Friday it's busy but not really stressful unless you're unfortunately working alone, it can get a little overwhelming but we have a great team that will jump in and help.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
My work environment is great. I love my work environment. Other employees are warm, helpful, kind and fun. They remember your birthday and make sure others do as well. Great potlucks, we're provided good snacks, we have amazing Practice coordinators/front desk staff that stay on top of our supplies. The support here is phenomenal. They love celebrating work anniversaries, and encouraging one another here. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day here at One Medical as a Medical Assistant and Phlebotomist is having the time you need to be tentative to our patients. Most medical facilities want Medical Assistant to room patients and do all the point of care testing here the physicians does those things themselves so our patients have less wait time.

One medical was sold as the best of the best of healthcare. And I agree, but there is so much work that is involved, much of what’s put on the admins. As an admin you are overworked and although it’s mainly Monday-Friday (you are “required to volunteer for 2-3 Saturdays), you can’t help but still think of work afterwards. My manager thankfully was super supportive because she was an admin before becoming a manager, but trust that the higher district medical directors don’t care about the admins. If you are an admin, you are either front desk or “Call Center” phones shift. You take calls for all the West Coast, from Arizona to Washington to California, so you can see how stressful that can be, helping a impatient/anxious patient find something that you don’t even know 100%. They say they thrive off feedback, but that’s basically so you feel like you’re heard, but nothing ever gets done about it. I will say I’ve talked to fellow admins and the burnout rate is unacceptable for a healthcare facility.  I find it ironic that the healthcare monstrosity known as One Medical does so much for its patients, yet does so little to support its admins. There were multiple occasion where I reached out to managers, and no one responded. Last but not least, $199 for a membership fee. Wow. Yes, we are expected to have a conversation for people who have been assigned by their insurance companies or just looking for a primary care provider that we charge $199 to be seen by our providers. Yes you get an in office lab, yes you get virtual visits with providers, but guess what, so does Kaiser. Everyone claims to be friendly and nice, and honestly there are genuine people that I’ve come to call close friends if not family, but sometimes it’s good to know when to break off from the family tree. Stress is definitely not worth it here! Especially for doing a ton of work, for a fraction of what other medical admins get paid at other facilities.

One Medical is a mission driven organization looking to change how healthcare is delivered. Easy message, difficult goal, but providers and admin are truly working towards it.

The higher administration is what is truly lacking.They try too hard to standardize little things that do not really have to do with actual healthcare/patient care and fall short and really dwell on that stuff. They care more about metrics than they'll ever care about employees or patients. Office managers and district managers spend all day in meetings that could simply be e-mails and are unavailable to their team. Try to get away with that by saying it's for feedback, etc. and never really provide results. Considering it's this group of individuals that are responsible for most of the organization's workflow and pay... you can see how it ends up being bad.

Admins are providers (both in office and online) are the real patient advocates. However, due to the mess of upper management and lack of resources, this job can prove to be difficult at times. Admins and providers truly do work closely together because no one else is helping them. Extremely underpaid in the healthcare market. The organization spends so much money on appeal and marketing that none of it goes to helping its own staff. 

The work culture is okay when you look soley at the admin team and provider team. Management sucks, but it is fairly doable to move up. Most admin choose not to because the work is less fulfilling and you know you spend all your time in meetings doing nothing beneficial. 

I would not recommend this job to any new graduates, or anyone looking to get into healthcare. You can find better experience elsewhere.

There was always plenty to be done and seemingly not enough time to do it all, but that's typical of any startup. It's really up to you to establish your own work/life balance by naming and sticking to your boundaries. If you ever have too much on your plate, you have to speak up and advocate for yourself. This is true of any job, but especially important to keep in mind when working for a startup.

I appreciated that I had the flexibility to work from home, but also had a cool, modern office to work in as well. The people are awesome. Very few egos getting in the way of work being done efficiently and effectively. People who don't fit the culture typically stick out like sore thumbs right away and don't stay for long. 

There are quite a few younger folks in management positions, which is not necessarily bad, but sometimes you need leaders who are more experienced. That said, there is a lot of support around development but it's a little less evident if you aren't in the administrative or management roles. Again, you have to advocate for yourself because the company is still in its growth phase and figuring things out, e.g. career pathing or learning and development.

My experience at One Medical was disappointing. The culture felt heavily influenced by office politics and micromanagement, which made it difficult for providers to focus on delivering patient care. There appeared to be frequent turnover among both clinical and administrative staff, resulting in a lack of continuity and added strain on the remaining team members.

One of the most frustrating aspects was the extent of non-clinical responsibilities placed on providers. Physicians were often expected to manage tasks that would traditionally be handled by support staff, effectively taking responsibility for much of the patient workflow from check-in to check-out. This created inefficiencies and reduced the time available for meaningful patient interactions.

It is important for prospective employees to understand that management can have a significant impact on the work environment. In my experience, when a manager was not supportive of an employee's success, expectations and processes could be structured in ways that felt like traps, leaving the employee feeling as though the only options were to surrender to unreasonable demands or leave the organization. Rather than receiving constructive support, some employees felt set up to fail, which created stress and uncertainty.

The organization promotes a modern, team-based approach to healthcare, but in practice I found the operational structure to be disorganized and overly management-driven. For providers seeking a collaborative environment with strong clinical support, fair leadership, and stable staffing, this may not be the best fit.

The health coach position is unique but definitely misleading before you're hired. They've grown too fast and where coaches used to be able to spend time with patients and find creative solutions and have more responsibility in the company, they are now too busy with the busy work and are essentially glorified medical assistants. They end up hiring overqualified people who become unhappy with their job and leave. Management does not help employees grow, or even give fair raises. They don't even help you prioritize your work when you have too much to do. They just keep pushing you to do more, which compromises the quality of work. If you're looking for an MA position, this would be a good career move because you'll get paid more and it'll be a little more challenging but nothing you can't handle. They also promise all this training and then don't really deliver, but they also don't really seem to care if you have the training. If they ask you to do something you feel unprepared for, they don't really care if you fail. The co-workers were great though. Everyone was always helpful and it's a pretty collaborative team environment. Also, I was told I have an opportunity for a raise along with an annual review, and that was revoked when it came time for the pay raise (months after review process). To clarify, it's not that my performance did not reflect a pay raise, they actually changed a policy DURING the review process and decided I'm no longer eligible for a raise.

One Medical is a great place to work because it focuses on delivering high-quality, patient-centered care while creating a supportive environment for employees. The company combines technology with healthcare, making it easier for patients to access care and allowing team members to work more efficiently. Employees have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on patients' lives by helping them navigate their healthcare needs and providing excellent service.
