Unfortunately, this facility has the potential to offer a lot for its residents and staff, however, it’s primary focus is monetary gain rather than creating a safe environment for both residents and staff. 

The Medical Director (house DR) is said to round once weekly when in reality it is sometimes monthly and without any direct patient contact.  RN and RT meet resistance when they feel a resident may need further assistance via sending to the hospital. Time has demonstrated how delaying this necessary patient-care leads to delayed treatment and even delay in new diagnoses.  Just for reference, the facility is not payed any time residents are sent and admitted to the hospital.

Staffing is a CONTINUOUS issue that is never truly resolved. High nurse-to-patient ratios, understaffed nurse techs, along with the expectation of working beyond your contractual hours leads to a constantly revolving door. It doesn’t help that new nurses are even orienting newer nurses due to lack of long-term employees within the facility. Numerous times orienting RNs are taken off of orientation for a shift to fill a void and then placed back on orientation the following shift. This is neither safe for the residents or the newer, inexperienced nurses. Pay is NOT competitive and benefits continue to decline from their already subpar status. 

Management treats “floor” staff poorly, simply stated. High demands with zero appreciation. Face-to-face communication is management’s preferred method of communication since they deny anything that lacks a paper trail. Issues and concerns brought to their attention are often disregarded.

Staff also meets exceeding frustration from lack of adequate supplies. Forget Evidenced Based Practice that you have learned about because this facility operates strictly off of the cheapest quality of supplies in order to continue to meet the yearly budget cuts to keep costs low for the owner. 

Furthermore, the most disturbing aspect is the level of deceit and lack of ethical decision-making that exists. It is evident through observation of the level of care due to lack of adequate support, resources, and staff. If uncertain about the veracity of the aforementioned, then join the PSC team and see for yourself.

This is heartbreaking for me to have to write. I love the children here. I love my coworkers, the nurses, techs, RTs, PT, Speech Therapy, OT, Recreational Therapists, Activity Assistants. They are wonderful people who genuinely care for these children. The children are the best part. They are the reason many people actually stay for as long as they have. The work is extremely rewarding. 
The management. IT IS HORRIBLE. The Administrator is single handedly destroying this company. She knows next to nothing about healthcare and definitely doesn’t take the time to get to know the children or her staff. There have been over 100 employees that have either resigned or have been fired in the last 2 years. The Administrator openly calls staff members horrible names, constantly using profanity. When you report the Administrator, you get fired or forced to resign, even though it’s supposed to be anonymous, which shows that the corruption goes even higher than the Administrator.
The facility is so sad. It is horribly run down. There have been bugs, black mold under a child’s mattress, and it is overall just a dirty environment which is unacceptable. The morale amongst staff has devastatingly dropped because the work environment is so sad and we have lost people who are such incredible workers and people and would work their butts off for those kids. But any time you challenge management, you’re forced to leave. It’s a tragic situation. And I hope one day the men who own this company will see the disservice that is being done to these children by allowing this corruption to occur. The kids deserve the best. But so do you. Find a job that will value you as much as you value it.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working with the children. They will put a smile on your face. It can be a very busy place . The administrator currently there is a very understanding , professional and understanding beautiful person.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The alarms from vents and continuous pulse ox,s on majority of patients. As a respiratory therapist with many years of experience, my expertise and knowledge was not welcoming. It was just do what you are told especially by the nurses. Some days I would be the only therapist on duty and responsible for at least 24 kids requiring respiratory.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Some people who work there can make it a toxic environment. Not many older (60+) people .Mixed races with some more than others.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Busy with alarms going off continuously and on my feet at least 11.5 hrs.(30min lunch when I can sit) some days I would be the only therapist there with being responsible for at least 24 kids. Nurses helped at times and sometimes not much help at all depending on what nurses were there that day.
There is a lot of weaning , trach care , collar changes, trach changes, trach cleaning ( we had to clean and sterilize our own trachs) equipment changes, wound care on necks, suction, cough assist, CPT, give meds, Co2 monitoring, some kids trachs come out while taken to showers, stock and fill water bags for humidity  on vents at end of shift.

This position does not have set job responsibilities. There are set things you have to do, but the responsibilities are always growing and you are constantly being asked to do things outside of your job umbrella.  The primary responsibility is documentation for government regulated compliance and improving the quality of life for the kids.  This would be a wonderful job if you had to do only that.  This company has a high turnover rate for employees because of the way management runs the "business" of providing care to medically fragile children.  This is a for profit company.  The hardest part of the job is trying to find the time to spend with the sweet children while swimming in paperwork and juggling nurse tech, dietary and transportation job responsibilities. I worked here for a little over a year and toward the end of the year the majority of my co-workers were newer to the company than I was.  The most enjoyable part of the job is working with therapy to improve outcomes for the children. These are the individuals who really care about the kids.  The kids are the reason to come to this job and the only reason to stay.

PSC is not a safe work environment.  Management doesn't respect or appreciate their staff.  They don't hold anyone accountable for their actions. Management at times can be down right disrespect and ignorant to you.  They keep nurses there who are not qualified for the position no matter what they do. You can talk to management and voice your concerns yet truly nothing improves.  Every time they turn it around on you like you are the problem.  So you just stop talking.  
Their isn't any educational training provided to the staff.  They are never visible out on the floor. 
 The state is frequently in the building due to multiple issues. The calls to the state are made by both staff and family.  The racism and favoritism is blant.  Not good if you are not one of the favorites.  The goal working their is pure survival.  Some stress at work is expected here your days wil be filled with ongoing distress.  Everyday you hope to have enough staff to care for the children.  The front line staff do their best to provide excellent care.  It is achieved by working as a team with no help or support from management.  Management there now  has no regard for their staff.

PSC-Philly is a rollercoaster ride. The greatest part of the job is working with the children and enjoying the time spent with them. PSC lacks good management. The company does not value staff and staff opinions. The catty drama ridden environment is enough to mentally break you. Not to mention the lack of support from administration. The nurse to patient ratio is HORRIBLE with  one nurse dealing with 6-8 medically fragile children (mostly trach and vent dependent all with feeding tubes and loads of medications) children. They advertise RT 24/7 but good luck getting half of them to answer alarms. Not to mention you are sometimes both the CNA and nurse. Administration believes that this is appropriate and constantly has the facility working short staffed. Administration who are nurses themselves will not get come on the floor to help at all. You are on your own. The environment is unsafe for these children and I fear losing my license at this facility due to complications related to staffing ratios. Terrible place to work. I feel so bad for these children.

This company is circling the drain when it comes to employee satisfaction.  Upper level management is only concerned with the bottom line and doesn't have an ounce of concern for staff satisfaction or a positive work environment.  The company may have profits monetarily, but that's because they squeeze every last penny out of their employees time cards, low staffing and minimal levels of care provided to the patients.   They treat employees like work mules and don't show appreciation or acknowledgment for any well done task, good job performance or good patient outcome.  The workloads are enormous.  Management often make rash decisions that effect all staff in a negative manner and don't seem to care about ramifications of these changes, nor do they provide explanations of their rash decisions.  Upper management's perspective is: if you don't like how things are run here, no one is forcing you to stay.    Until there is new upper level management that cares about the patients and staff, I'd suggest you quickly pass by any job listings.

If you care at all about the welfare of children and seeing them grow developmentally and socially, do not work here.  Administration is doing a disservice to this children living here; they ignore their behavioral needs as well as their emotional/developmental needs.  There are children here with absolutely no medical needs and are physically hurting other staff and children.  Multiple investigations have happened based on something a child has said, and that staff member has been fired.  This place is filled with gossip; it is clear that 75% of the staff don't want to be there and they make that very clear in the care they provide for the children.  There have been times where children haven't been given any food, medications, or even water for 12 hours straight.  The social workers have no desire or drive to assist these children in discharging; they care more about helping the parents out than the actual children.  Children are hurting staff and no one seems to care.  If you actually want to make a difference in the lives of children, do not work here.

Overall, the place is very nice. It is an excellent place in which these amazing kids that have mental and physical disabilities can be taken care of. The staff is usually very friendly and the kids are always put first. The pay is very nice and holidays are double time. Basically the only con is: the corporate people are oblivious that they are dealing with these kids and view them as mere numbers; therefore, they cut expenses at all cost. (They took away lubrication and wanted saline used to replace trachs!) They ask about the issues that arise but merely give us rehearsed lines and never correct anything such as shortage of staff. Also they treat PRN workers better than full time workers. I have been on 3-11 for about a year now and they have several openings in the morning, but give all the openings to the PRN nurses instead of allowing me to move to mornings all letting the PRN take the open evening shifts.

They seriously don't appreciate their employees, Nurses nor Nurse Techs. They try to cheat you on time when incentives come up, which makes you not want to do them. They also have cliques and serious favoritism within the Point Pleasant location. They totally only look out for those that they are cool with!! You can work your behind off for them and you don't get recognized but those that aren't that hood at their jobs get all the accolades!! The nurses don't help the techs and most of all they always go behind the te hs backs and report them to the higher ups simply because they don't like you for whatever reason and also Management tells your business to their cliques.  Don't stick your neck out for any ody there they all backstabbing constantly. Day & night shift are @ war constantly!!!!!! They also have a very VERY HIGH turnover rate because people aren't treated with respect & appteciation
