The training is decent, and it is a good stepping-stone experience for students looking to get trained in EPIC, but I would not work here for more than a couple of months. The healthcare providers themselves tend to be very kind. However, many of the medical assistants are extremely rude and unprofessional, especially to newer employees and call center employees. Lots of gossip and aggressive confrontation instead of taking steps to find a constructive solutions to problems. I understand this is a high-turnover job and it can be frustrating to constantly deal with new employees, but this type of environment is what causes that turnover. Healthcare should be a team effort, and that is absolutely not the environment here. This is much to the fault of management, who ignore and even are apart of gossip. At any other job with professional management, the way the employees here treat others would not be tolerated. Healthcare is a high stakes environment, but there are plenty of ways to constructively solve problems or deal with conflict besides yelling at fellow employees who are just doing their job - I once experienced an aggressive confrontation by a medical assistant for scheduling an appointment too close to closing (which was approved by a healthcare provider and ended 20 minutes before closing), and would often be treated rudely by employees when asking them to do things that were in their job description. Employees at this company did not take accountability, treat others as teammates, or demonstrate professionalism -- all vital skills for someone working in healthcare. Patients took notice, and most patients I worked with were rightfully extremely frustrated with this clinic. This job still stands out to me as somewhere I would absolutely never go as a patient, and never work as an employee.

I do not recommend working for here, even if you are looking for a place to start. There are plenty of other clinics that are accepting new graduate medical assistants or medical assistants with no experience. Especially for those who wanting to apply for graduate programs, such as PA or Medical school. It is not the best environment to learn about the healthcare field. There is no room for growth and you will slowly lose your drive to work in healthcare. 

For insight, let me tell you about my experience. 

First two weeks of training at corporate:
- Learning about the epic system and for majority of the time you are just picking up phone calls. 

After two weeks of training, you have in clinic training:
  1st Week ~ front desk
   - learning how to check in patients, verify 
     insurance, schedule patients, and learn the 
     appropriate documents to give patients.

   2nd Week ~ back office
    - Trained by other medical assistants who 
      clearly don't have the time due to clinics 
      being understaffed. This leads to poor 
      training. 

    - everything you learn from corporate 
      training will not be useful because you will 
      rarely have time to pick up phones.


Management:
- They talk behind employees backs, which does not create a safe and comfortable environment. 

- Wants you to find your own coverage. Which is difficult if you don't have access to information to the floating MA's. 

- Cares more about public image than patients or employees.

- Must tell them if you're going to work overtime. If you don't you will be written up. However, it is difficult to message supervisors regarding this issue if you are busy. In addition, it can't be expected to finish on time if patients are scheduled at 5:45PM and your shift ends at 6PM.

- Likes to establish superiority, money hungry, and power hungry. 

Other employees:
- Only best thing about the job 
- Been told many times by other employees that this is a terrible company to work at and I should quit. 



 

Do yourself a favor and do NOT work for Perlman (at any location).  I did not know that a job could be so toxic until I unfortunately ended up there.  A quick summary of each of their shortcomings:

-This is a company that embodies the mantra "profits over patients".  Their goal is not to provide quality patient care, but to maximize their revenue by any means necessary.  Patients know this and are angry and upset as a result.

-As part of putting profits over everything else, the expectation of their employees is to not record any overtime.  This means that you have the choice of either (1) abandoning a patient under your care in the middle of their visit to clock out so that you don't get written up, or (2) working overtime and not recording it or getting paid for it (which is what many employees feel pressured to do here).

-The job is incredibly demanding and they expect you to perform at a high level, but they barely pay you above minimum wage.  After a year of working for Perlman, you can expect to receive a $0.50 to $1.00/hour raise.

-The people who comprise management and HR are incredibly underqualified and unprofessional.  

-There is high turnover due to low pay, mismanagement, and general job dissatisfaction, which reduces the quality of the people you work with.  As they continue growing with new locations, expect management to further deteriorate in every clinic.

-The only saving grace of this company, and likely the only reason why they are still in business, is because they have caring and talented medical providers.

In sum, you will deeply regret the stress, depression, and frustration that you will feel if you end up working for Perlman.


They care about numbers. Whether it’s patients seen, calls made, calls received, or referrals made. I got sick and since I didn’t seem “sick enough” I had to work. Didn’t end well. My body got worse from not resting. I had to choose what was more important: getting fired to rest or working.
PTO is not easy at all to use and takes such a long time to accumulate.
Just a note. Training is not the amount they say. Some people are told a few weeks, others a few months. Depending on the position, you could have a quick (2 weeks) or longer (6 months +) training before being allowed to work hybrid or from home. Just an fyi.
It’s easy to get hired. It’s a 5-10 minute video call interview and they get back to you in a week to start in the next couple days.
They kinda give you a lot of information at once, and not everything that is needed, and leave you on your own. To learn, you need to ask a lot of questions. 

Starting off training we only read slides and basically trained each other.
I trained other people while I myself was not trained properly. I was told my roll would be in call center, and I would only be transferring calls to other departments, which is why I accepted the job. FALSE. They expect 7 calls per hour each call under 4 minutes, plus take notes of each call, plus verify or call insurance, pharmacy, billing. I rarely transfer calls because I'm expected to resolve everything, even though I am not trained on insurances, billing or referrals. Management does not receive feedback well- they give you a write up for something petty if you call them out. Most of the day I'm stressed because I'm counting my calls and if I need assistance from management- THEY NEVER ANSWER CALLS.
The pay is not even close to being good for the amount of work you do.


On top of underqualified managers that achieved their roles through favoritism, you will be thrown into a stressful work environment where you are expected to perform the job functions of three people at once all while making less than a worker in the fast food industry.

Perlman Clinic is not a good place to work, especially for those looking to get their career started in the healthcare field. If you choose to work here, some potential issues you may come across include:

1. Improper or rushed training protocols
2. Toxic workplace gossip about peers, patients, and doctors
3. Unprofessionalism 
4. Disorganization or lack of structure
5. Blame-shifting
6. Communication issues
7. Work-induced stress
8. Lack of support

There is a reason why the turnover rate for this position is so high. Please save yourself the headache and look elsewhere for a healthier work environment.



They only trained us for two weeks and I got let go because I took too long on calls and I struggled to find the relevant information (after being on calls for only a couple of hours spanning two days) on Epic (EHR that needs extensive training, not just a few days). Patients complained (which I don't blame them for, they were just looking for help), and the calls got sent to management. They fired me for lack of performance. I liked the trainer, but corporate was only using her innocuous and kind presence to mask their profit driven, unforgiving, and cold business mindset. In an ideal world, this would be the opposite of what healthcare should be, but considering how healthcare works in this country, I'm not surprised.

i’m not even sure where to start. About everything about working here is negative. Aside from their flexibility and nearby food places there’s no actual pros to working here. Staff is underpaid, Management favorites are obvious, and they’re super unorganized. You don’t have your own workspace, time and time you’ll find people sitting at your go-to work station, and left to look for an open computer. Parking ? We were promised parking arrangements, but were later told no. Compensation? Depending on who hired you, not everyone is paid equally. You’ll find people with 0 experience getting paid more than you with experience. They’re constantly hiring due to people ALWAYS quitting. They paint the job description as something far from what you’re actually going to get. 

So disorganized. This is strictly on the call center part (yes it's a call center and they don't tell you that when you're hired).  To save money, they use an externship program so people are constantly in and out. Makes for a stressful environment and hostile co workers. The management is no better, they're rude and not helpful at all. You'll be lucky if you find a few NICE co-workers that can help you sort out through everything. On top of that, they have multiple clinics and different ways of doing things in each clinic. Medical Assistants are no better at helping because they're know it all's and refuse to answer the phone so you're being yelled at by the patients for the clinic's fault. 

I will miss Perlman Clinic. I am moving out of state or I would have worked at Perlman Clinic for many years. Management allows providers to pick up additional shifts for additional compensation, is incredibly flexible with paid and unpaid time off, and allows remote work. You can earn a ton of money in the bonus programs if you see more than 1.6 patients per hour and code appropriately. I love the people I work with and if I have an issue it is always resolved quickly. Medical Assistant turnover is a problem. It is difficult to maintain the same MA but I have found that to be the case in my previous roles elsewhere.
