Queens Library

I love the library and the neighborhood. We have meetings to collaborate before a new cycle and share ideas. Everyone can see each other's lesson plans online, attendance roster, comments and the supervisor gives some feedback on lesson plans in a professional and productive way. The only thing I don't like is that the student evaluations take too long and it would be better if the office could print out each one with at least the library location and cycle labeled. But they are also written out by hand which takes extra long and that drags on. There is generally a two week break where you don't get paid between cycles but it's not that bad plus sometimes you can get some hours testing new students during that interim. There is technology available there although it isn't set-up for plug and play because you have to set everything up every time and it's time-consuming. The classes are too big and can have 40+ students. The students themselves are great people and the staff is nice. I wouldn't want to forget my experiences here. The pay is good as well. I'd say it should be desirable for ESOL teachers to work for Queens Library. I'm still there and glad I still am because there are budget cuts sometimes where you can lose classes but I can't fault Queens Library for that. I wish them the best and hope they keep improving their adult education programs. When I'm gone I will miss them and I mean that from my heart. I can live with the cons that's for sure because working here has been great.

At Queens Library the typical day would be working with my co-workers and keep the customers happy. My job is to satisfy my customers therefore I would try every professional skills in order to make my customers happy. The environment at the library is very enjoyable, it is like waking up in your dream job. Everyone has smile on their faces and they would go beyond their limits to bring the smile on people's faces. It does not even feel that I am working because I feel that every staff members are like my family. However at times things get hard when it comes to taking care of the specific customers. There are many customers who does not like to be told about the policy and rules of the library, which makes it hard to face the obstacle. For that situation I would strictly tell one of the librarian, manager or supervisor to discuss about the problem. By taking up the job I have learned to manage my time, to be responsible, talk professionally, always have smile while you are at work. Nobody wants to see a dusky face when you are at a job. Moreover, the biggest skill that I have learned is that a person cannot addle their professional and personal life, the two kinds of life should stay at its place.

A regular day at work would consist of me restocking book shelves in the Dewey decimal system and DVD selves in alphabetical order. Sometimes I had created origami programs to bring Japanese culture to the small little world that is out workplace to show them the beauty in which a single piece of paper can create in a few folds. My supervisor instructed me the first 2 or 3 days to simply show me the process in which to do my job and also how the library operates so that I can work fluently and productively. My co-workers treated me like I was working them since day 1 of opening; they easily learned my first name which many people find hard to pronounce and we often make jokes that make slow days go by quicker and always put me in a good mood if I were to ever feel down. I say the hardest part of the job were the fights that occasionally broke out but were easy to fix. The most enjoyable part was making friends and learning more about the world from the customers that I was able to help and impress by fixing their personal laptops that they had trouble with.

A typical job for the library consists of providing a teleconference with approximately 8-10 adults within the age range of 70-94.  I prepare booklets for them about Queens history.  We discuss the booklet.

Opportunities for In Branch onsite work has been developing.

I have learned to have a deep admiration for librarians and our community's older population.

The management is thorough, fair, and encouraging.

Most of my work is from home and over the telephone.  The clients and I have a very good relationship with one another.  Bear in mind I have not met them in person.

The research is the hardest part of the job.  It is important to find as many primary sources for the topics as I can.  However, I enjoy the adventure of it.

The most enjoyable part of the job is what I learn from the clients.  Sometimes I feel I receive more from them than they receive from me.

I am a long time employee and when I first started working here, Queens was known for its excellent training for new librarians, which I was fortunate enough to receive,  This training made Queens Library trained librarians very desirable and many left the system for better jobs elsewhere.  Over time, however, the direction of management has changed for the worse with several poor CEO/Directors in a row; morale became low although this seems to be improving with CEO Dennis Walcott. There is room for advancement here and most people are more than collegial, however, management does play favorites and many Library Managers get away with many things while others are constantly on edge because the "wrong" people don't like them.  It's become very political and not the way it was when I started.  Still, it would be a great first job for many new librarians.

The library is a deeply responsive organization that provides a breadth of truly necessary services. The branches function as much as community and cultural centers as they do places of learning.  The culture of staff, however, is not as collaborative as it ought to be, and department are competitive for resources, information, and preference. This is improving under the current administration, but very, very slowly.  By virtue of its funding sources, the libraries function very bureaucratically, and the internal governance compounds that regulation, getting in its own way quite a bit. It's a shame that this great organization, staffed mostly by dedicated and capable people trips itself up so often.

Too many people mistake a library for being quiet. Haha, not on Jamaica ave.

Even with the wild patrons who'd rage out of their minds for their computer's time expiring or forgetting their own password (I've got some stories, security's awesome though)-it was a very fun (and laid back) job. If you're experienced with computers it's a breeze (you get a lot of people asking how to log into their gmails, or how to turn on caps lock, etc.).

Pay was pretty low by New York standards, hence the reason I had to eventually relocate back to Florida but it seemed there was good opportunities for advancement had I stayed longer.

Good job, I miss it.

Queens Library has enriched my life long before becoming an employee. I did a lot of my research at the library.
On Monday's I teach a beginners and advanced level class.
On Tuesday I open up for other staff and classes. I input data information in the computer. I also administer Tabe test Best Plus and Best Literacy testing..I Answer questions from patrons.
I work with people from many different cultures. We work as a team.
The hardest part of the job is the hours we have to be flexible. When registration starts I can be registering for 5-6- hours and testing students.The most enjoyable part of the job is when I see my students progressing and moving on to the next level.

I Worked at the Queens Library under a contract from FJC Security Services, To me the staff was my family & most of them still are. I still come to visit even though I no longer work here, but I wouldn't mind coming back to work for the Queens Library System I had a great experience, met a lot of ppl , learned a lot . I actually worked ever area of Central Library from the old Media Center to the new, worked the elevators, teen center, the former art gallery, the console, side door & the main floor. Got to know a few parents as well. Funny how I don't work here anymore & I still have corners high school students coming in asking for me to let me know they in college now or they graduated from high school/ college. Glad I had a positive impact on most of them ☺

I have a part time position at the Queens Library.
From the beginning I got the opportunity to learn a lot about the job and it was the most enjoyable part.
Every day I'm engaged with costumers, answering questions,  referring them to appropriate staff, and helping them with the automatic self-check-out and self-check-in systems.
Primarily I do;
Maintenance of book stocks and displays.
Shelving books and library materials.
Helping children's librarian with codding new materials and labeling and linking new DVDs and magazines.
I've had the great pleasure of working with excellent co-workers and managers so far, and it has contributed to our success serving hundreds of customers everyday.
