While in the beginning Renown was a 'great place where great people do great work'...this was four years ago, and that idea quickly deteriorated. In the non-clinical areas, they choose management to manage positions of which they have no experience in. They are far more interested in point of service collections as that is your primary job, collecting. The workload that they give you is enough for at least two people, yet you alone are expected to get it done. Have a patient who was just placed on comfort care? Doesn't matter, you are still expected to get that co-pay/deductible. Or how about that patient in intensive care with grim chances of surviving...Their wife is in there? You'll be getting the money from her as well. Too bad if she is crying and not fully accepting the upcoming loss of her husband. You'll be called every name in the book, desensitizing you as a person. And as a patient access rep, you will feel like you probably deserve it. My biggest piece of advice is to document every thing you do once hired. Print every e-mail between you and your supervisor/manager. Create spreadsheets of interactions with your patients and why they could not pay. And keep it printed... Can't get a patient to pay? Document it, because they will find a way to hold it against you in the end. If you are one of those, that sees a process that doesn't seem to work well, and have an idea for what will/may work, just keep your mouth closed. While they tell you they encourage ideas, they don't. The process of 'climbing the career ladder' is discouraging. They would rather take those who they have gotten close to as regular patient access reps (their friends)instead of way more qualified candidates. Those people who once held the same position as you, that's now your manager, are the ones you have to worry about. If at any point you had a incident with them, they now have an issue with you. You have now become their target. And thus, the beginning of the end begins. Talk to their manager? That's an even bigger mistake. That's where they'll start their process of filtering you out. The nail on your coffin is when you decide you think human resources is on your side. Never ever under any circumstances waste your breath or time speaking with management or human resources. It doesn't matter how well of a job you perform, the extra hours you sign up for to help with their projects, or even the amount of money you do collect. If for any reason your manager or supervisor has an issue with you or simply does not like you, the best thing to do is to start looking into a job transfer out of patient access. I know that the clinical areas are much better and have a higher level of professionalism. In patient access, you will never feel appreciated unless the monthly goal is met. The acknowledgement? Is by e-mail. Collect a $10,000 payment? You'll get... "that's good...but your department still hasn't met their goal so...." It's sad that what was truly such a great place to work, a place I considered a 2nd home, is something that led me into clinical depression myself. The best part of the job was the day I realized that the energy that I was spending to try and deter the patient's negative comments about Renown and going 'above and beyond' would be better spent at nursing school, except this time I will not waste my time with Renown, I will go to a more dignified hospital, where personal opinions on a person won't affect their job. good...but your department still hasn't met their goal so...."

Renown Health has good values, standards of conduct, purpose and ensures their employees are aware.  However, I wish I could have seen my fellow co-workers use them daily with words and actions.
Renown is a good hospital but the employees and management have been know to toss aside all of the knowledge learned in employee orientation & LDU classes and run business their "own" way.  Patients are supposed to be #1 and your employees should follow.  This should not be "for looks"... healthcare is about taking care of the patient NOT undoing rules and then not having ALL employees held accountable.

Renown is supposed to be a great place to do great work well, about 60% is, the other 40%, need to learn how to lead by example.  You may get your work done but when your higher up managers don't get the job done, it's difficult.  Being with Renown, I thought that there would be a purpose to the work being done, not a who-knows-who and what can I get away with attitude.  I learned how I DON'T want to be treated or treat others. I had a GREAT team to work with throughout my time at Renown but management was the downfall.  It's hard when you are always having to "watch your back" because you don't know whose out to get you.  Seems the harder your work, the more people are after you and the more gets piled on.

People, Quality, Stewardship and Service - I believe in it... I believe in the purpose to optimize our patients healthcare experience.  To bad that a few managers and co-workers can bring down an entire organization by NOT doing what they should and not being accountable.  It's also extremely saddening when dealing with management and fellow employees who make work difficult and even when taking information to your manager, they don't do a thing about it.  You get stonewalled and somehow your complaint doesn't get to HR.

I wish everyone the best but when it comes to teamwork, I'd look elsewhere... I hope Renown can take a good look at their toxic environment and clean up.  Good experiences get told to a few, bad experiences get told to many.

I have worked at Renown for over five years, starting as a patient transporter and advancing to a CNA. One of the biggest positives is the opportunity for growth through apprenticeship programs. I was part of the CNA apprenticeship, which helped me move forward in my career, and I appreciate that the organization offers these kinds of pathways. Another strong aspect of working here is the team environment. I genuinely enjoy working with most of my coworkers, and we often support each other and work well as a team, which makes a big difference during busy or stressful shifts. That said, there are still several areas that need improvement. Management can be inconsistent across departments, and at times it feels like employee feedback is not always taken seriously. This can make it difficult to feel fully supported or comfortable bringing up concerns. Career advancement can also be challenging. While there are opportunities on paper, applying for internal positions is not always a smooth process, and communication from recruiters can be lacking. Follow-ups after interviews are not always consistent, which can be frustrating when trying to grow within the company. Compensation is another mixed area. The pay is decent starting out, but it has not kept up well with the cost of living in Reno. Raises over time have been minimal, which can make long-term growth feel limited. There are also times when roles feel stretched, such as unit clerks taking on additional responsibilities like monitor tech duties, and there could be more structured training opportunities for CNAs who want to advance into higher-level roles. Overall, Renown has some solid strengths, especially in terms of entry-level opportunities, training programs, and team culture among coworkers. However, improvements in management communication, internal mobility, and compensation would make a big difference in the overall employee  experience.


Absolute worst management I have been under, requests in your supply chain computer will start popping up as soon as you walk in the door first thing in the morning along with getting bombarded with other requests from delivery drivers, clueless vendors and contractors, lost patients and visitors, and other staff for a non-stop 8 hour day. Good luck taking your break as you will be tending to everyone else's requests back to back. The only few times it is somewhat manageable you'll be monitored and called out for supposedly slacking off when there is nothing else to do. 

Managers do not want to be in this department, other departments do not like dealing with this department. It is very heavily understaffed and is capped on by the day by supposedly superior departments such as nursing and somehow fails to serve its purpose to the company in maintaining adequate supplies to operating rooms and floors.

Moving up a position apparently means by default three years until you advance into a buyer role, with a whopping 50 cents a year to your base pay, which I feel very few people will want to spend their valuable time in a department that plugs and chugs the same cookie cutter role over and over again for barely above what retail and fast food workers pay, and they wonder why no one wants to work at this company because there is literally no room to advance and it is designed to trap people into doing low level work thinking they are making a difference.

It could honestly easily be doubled up on other departments to save a few dollars and would be unnoticed if it were deleted as everyone else could apparently do the supply chain job themselves.

I worked in a very busy office where on any given day your job tasks could be turned upsidedown and we worked as a team to pick up the areas for the tasks that had to be done. As a team we designed an office flow chart for the job tasks that had to be done daily and the first/second/third employee responsible to complete the tasks. Then the additional duties that could wait until a later time to be done. We worked together like a family. At Renown we were encouraged to voice our opionions and suggestions. We were given the "room" to experiment with processes to see what would work better or what did not work at all. We had a company wide gallup survey every six months and we were asked 13 questions and each was given a rate of 1-5. Then we would meet as a workgroup under our specific manager and go over the results of the survey. Then we would pick two areas to work and improve upon. One question was our strength and how to keep it as a strength. The second selected question was our weakness and we worked together on stratgies in order to improve in that area by the time the next survey came around. It was very nice. Also we had recently "invented" a "report card" that we did weekly based on running various reports and we could map out what progress was being accomplished in the whole office. We were able to quickly identify areas that needed improvement.

My experience at work is a mixture of highs and lows. While I find a strong sense of purpose in my work and appreciate the time and location flexibility it offers, these positives are overshadowed by significant concerns. I am grappling with a lack of satisfaction, happiness, and energy in most of my work tasks, which is concerning. The stress levels I experience are consistently high, and I do not feel that my compensation reflects the effort and quality I bring to my role.

Despite these challenges, there are bright spots. I am supported and encouraged by some colleagues, and there is a level of appreciation for me as an individual. However, trust issues with the company, a lack of belonging, and insufficient support from management to succeed are prominent issues. The work environment does not feel inclusive or respectful, which is disheartening.

While I am achieving some of my goals and learning occasionally, the overall environment does not foster the growth and well-being that I seek in a workplace. This dichotomy between purposeful work and an unsupportive environment is at the heart of my workplace experience.

My position in general is super stressful but yet it is rewarding because you learn things you'd never learn elsewhere but the same can be said on other floors. I work on the telemetry unit of Tahoe tower 7th floor at Renown Regional Medical center and i wouldn't trade for anywhere else. Sometimes the workload can get pretty heavy but that is when you step up and ask your nurses for help or anyone that is around and i have never been told no i wont or it will be on my own time. When you do your job the management on this floor is behind you 100% and will go through hoops for you and that is what i love is the support on this floor and overall the support of others that float to this floor. The best part of the job but also the hardest is your patients thriving and getting better, but the process is still the hard part. This is a great place to work at and jump into because it will take you far, sometimes i wish i could get paid more for what i do but that is also when i remind myself i have to put in the time but lets be serious no one thinks in any job they get paid enough so lets be real.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The business has been mismanaged resulting in outsourcing.  Management only looks out for themselves.  HR doesn't appropriately address complaints of a toxic workplace.  There are too many Karens working there.  People won't stand up and deal with issues.  They whine behind the backs of others.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Karens, toxic, cliquish, uncaring.  Any claims of the importance of the employees is just marketing.  Renown only cares about making money and doing as little as possible for the happiness of employees.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I watch team members come in late and other team members leave early.  My manager doesn't know/care since he leaves early, too.
I work with "customers" who stab me in the back.  Most of them are good but the bad players ruin the goodwill of years of prior work.  Bad players tend to be Karens who won't deal directly with issue and instead bring in everyone else to complain about issues.  
Other groups in my department treat my group like we're they're secretaries always telling us to do things, like make phone calls to users, that they should be just as capable of doing.

I’ve worked for Renown for awhile now, and at first it was fun, educational, and fast paced. But then you start to realize how horribly run this place is. Management will replace you in a heartbeat, they don’t care about your well being, they demand more and more out of you while they push surveys and scores at you because their bonuses are affected by these. They get compensated the harder you work for them. Nurses are well understaffed on every floor, slammed with multiple patients which isn’t fair for them or the patients. It just isn’t safe. Ask any employee or traveler who’s come through here, Renown is one of the LOWEST paying hospitals and by far one of the busiest. If you try going to HR with any complaint or concern they immediately turn it on you and will defend management to no end. Again, you’re replaceable (though with the understaffing there they just don’t replace you at all and everyone is forced to work harder). Any accusation you bring up is met with hostility and they’ll look for any reason to write you up and get you out of there. Trust me i’ve seen it happen to multiple people. All in all this place just does not care whatsoever about their employees or patients for that matter. Everything is just numbers and dollars to them.

Renown does a lot of posturing and profiling to ensure the PR is positive. Unfortunately, it is all eyewash. Managers are the typical cowardly, do-nothing, say-nothing, prairie dogs that look to advance within Renown or transfer to another position in another hospital by doing nothing. The misunderstood Socratic Oath of "First do no harm" is taken out of context to be "First do no harm to my career path". The result is a lack of courage, little real action, but a lot of posturing of the hospital. My impression is that the CEO has good intentions and would like to progress. Unfortunately, he is surrounded by petrified, PC, "no action is safe action", 2nd and 3rd tier managers with the typical lack of intestinal fortitude to do great things and sacrifice organizational progress for personal security. Just another hospital with cowardly lions. For the sake of Reno, I hope Renown drastically churns the pot, embraces change for the better, and encourages brave leadership while eliminating the cowardly.
