Where to begin when there is so much to say? 

The pay is bad, for what you do. In the "training" your job description and the tasks you can and frequently will do, takes up an entire page. You essentially need to be a taxi driver, a chef, a delivery boy/girl, a friend, a confidant, a pet sitter, a housekeeper, a secretary, AND a personal caregiver, among other things. The people doing one of most these other jobs makes more. 

The benefits are bad and just recently offered, but that's kind of a more widespread issue right now...

They'll compensate you for miles on the job, but when they ask you to go somewhere that's 10 or 15 miles from home for a three hour shift, that mileage really should be compensated because otherwise you spend more on gas and wear and tear on your vehicle.

A lot of offered shifts are 3 or 4 hours long. To get full time hours that way, you need gaps for driving time as well. So even IF you manage to get up to 40 hours, you make have to work 11 hour days just to get 8.

Some of the management is rude and I've also heard this complaint multiple times from patients and families as well. 

I guess the end to my rant is that the training is a joke. Our yearly bit of required training can all be done online. Nothing wrong with online education, but a lot of caregiving skills are best learned hands on and a lot of different clients like things a particular way, but there isn't training for individual clients. Even those that don't need much in the way of personal care should at least have a short training with a current caregiver to get to know the patient, their needs, and their likes and dislikes.

I hate that after so many years, when I actually think about it, I can't think of much good about the office itself. 

And please note that this review is specifically for the Portland OR office. Since the Google reviews keep magically disappearing, this is a better place to review!

A typical day at work: began with checking voice messages left during closed business hours. Checking on  care givers and hospice clients to see that the clients and care givers needs are being met.  Performing intake calls to warrant if client meets requirements to receive in home care.  Weekly coordinate and facilitate potential new hire orientation and screening.  

I learned from this position that clients and staff require attention that  must be dealt with in a timely manner, and with sensitivity.

The management staff was not a cohesive staff.  The organization was marketed as a not for profit organization but the Vice President made it all about the numbers, and how much revenue could be brought in.  I understood that the organization could only survive with the payments of the clients. After I left the organization I discovered that they were being investigated for embezzlement of client security deposits. 

The office  manager of the company was the most compassionate individual that I worked with on a daily basis.  He encouraged me to do my best.  We had a very cohesive working relationship.  

The hardest part of the job was to experience clients who were in their hospice stage in their lives.  The sadness and suffering that the client and family members were experiencing moved my heart to be compassionate and empathetic

The most enjoyable part of the job was to find comfort knowing that the clients and family members were being helped with the challenge of knowing that their loved one would be coming to the end of his or her life.  .

I worked at Right at Home (Chester, VA), and while I appreciate the flexibility in being able to choose my schedule, there are serious issues that impact both caregiver satisfaction and retention.

You may be assigned a regular client, but expect that to change — often, the office pressures you into taking shifts by using guilt tactics, especially when they are short-staffed. I’ve been scheduled for back-to-back shifts with barely any rest in between, including one case where I worked a 24-hour shift and was expected to start another just a few hours later.

Holiday pay is another concern. The company has been known to call clients in advance of holidays to adjust the schedule, effectively removing caregivers from holiday shifts to avoid paying time-and-a-half.

The pay is below average for this type of demanding work, and raises are minimal — around $1 per year, even if you go above and beyond. Short shifts (sometimes just 2 hours) are common, and by the time you factor in gas, it barely covers the cost of commuting.

While they occasionally highlight certain employees, it often feels selective and more like a way to push others to "step up" rather than true recognition. For a company that says it values caregivers, it doesn't often feel that way in practice.

I stayed because I care about my clients, not because of how the company treats its employees.


I left school last summer. I knew that I wanted a career where I could help people. I had thought of going into nursing, but my school Career advisor suggested trying Care first. It was great advice.

I applied to all the reputable firms in Leeds, but only one firm looked at me as an individual, my qualifications and my experiences, and didn’t write me off as being too young.

The training provided was to an excellent level, and when I started visiting clients, I did so with a senior CareGiver whom I shadowed to ensure I was comfortable. Knowing I could continue shadowing until I was confident helped put me at ease.

I started working with Right at Home in September 2023, and it’s been amazing, I’m enjoying working here.

Before I joined Right At Home asked the directors if I do an apprenticeship. They have supported me throughout and have helped me complete my Care Certificate, and now I will be working towards my Level 3 NVQ. I am learning so much, and I am being given a clear career progression. I have also been told I am being fast-tracked towards being a Senior CareGiver.

Not having worked in Care world before there were some things I took for granted, but talking to my colleagues they were surprised that Right at Home paid staff during their training, and shadowing visits and best of all they pay higher than the Living Wage, and higher than other local care companies!

Right At Home has been a win, win win, for me, and long may it continue!


Clients & families were awesome. Management was good at first but once you worked there for a while they seemed to not care for you as much. The company played favorites A LOT, you could tell management about another worker & they would just brush it off. About 6 months after I was there, they started a new 24 hour policy where if you didn't call in 24 hours prior to your shift to let them know you wouldn't be coming you got in trouble, even when I had to call out they still seemed to get irritated with me about it & I tried VERY hard not to call out unless I absolutely had to, they literally fired me over email because I had a flat tire & couldn't get to work because I only have one car & I don't know anyone up here, they said they would send me my seperation notice & they still haven't. This company let's their favorites do whatever they want and those of us who can only work certain hours because we have a family to take care of, they don't really care much about them! If you can work any shift then go for it. But if you enjoy having a set schedule so you can see your family after taking care of others & their families, don't bother with this company. Caregivers are rude, management sucks, they don't train you even though they say they will, you don't get any benefits & they don't pay for your mileage. Don't waste your time!

Loved working for the owner of the Right at Home Tallahassee company!  It was a start up franchise and the owner had been the president of a local branch for over many years  She is awesome!  Very professional, compassionate, driven, sweet, fair, has high expectations and is appreciative of all the efforts her team puts forth on a daily basis. She makes you want to do a great job which is a sign of a great leader!  She would do anything necessary in the business if needed.   Great business development owner, sales and marketing guru and business manager.  Rare!  We had a very unique opportunity to work there for her and I would still be there except I needed to move back to NC. We worked hard all day but time flew by!  I learned a great deal working there that will stick with me for a long time.  There was no problem we couldn't solve as a team and the owner made us feel like we were an important part of the business!!   The workplace culture was awesome.  I loved my office mate and we worked great together. The hardest part of the job was all the call outs and having to take calls 24/7.  The team was always there to help rectify any problems but it was a little bit of an intrusion into my personal life. I think as the company grows the owner will rotate the on call responsiblility though.  She's very open to new ideas.  Right at Home Tallahassee rocks!

The type of work I did would include getting to my Client's house, clocking in via telephone and continuing with whatever the Client needed. A typical day would start out something like this; Making sure the Client ate a good breakfast before or after I arrived, going over any errands and notes the Client had (ex. Doctor's visit, groceries, mail delivery, laundry). Took care of errands, did lighthouse work, and made sure that Client would take their prescribed medication as directed. Also cooked lunch for Clients and prepared dinner if I wasn't going to be there later on in the day.   Management would be understanding for last minute schedule changes for the most part, but I felt management wasn't readily able to talk out any "problems" that would arise with whatever case I had at the time. I didn't work with any other co-workers, as it would be a client to companion work schedule. But I have heard of  2 companions or nurses working 1 case at a time. The hardest part of my job would probably be how far I would have to travel at times to a Client's home, as gas mileage to and from work were not counted, however if you used your own personal vehicle, you would be reimbursed up to a certain percentage for your miles used on your car, which was a plus. The most enjoyable part of my job were definitely the Clients! You meet some very interesting Clients with very interesting stories!  If you like what you do already, it makes it that much more enjoyable.

This place is a joke! They sent me to a mice/rat/bat infested home.
They told me that I could not talk to anybody about a client unless I was on the clock. I went to the office for something, and they asked me about my client, I said I'm sorry but I can't talk to you about the client because I am not on the clock.(that is what they told myself and a friend) They told me that I had better talk to them, and that I was being hard to get along with.
They advertise that they have advancement oppertunities. I know people that have been with this company for years. They have done all of the "continueing education" books that they have. (which is how you earn your pay increases) and they have not seen anything, not one penny from the company.
The management at this location is really poor. They do not seem to care about the client or their family, as long as they, Right At Home, gets their money!
I called in sick one time. They told me that I had to go to the ER/Urgent Care facility. I ended up having a severe allergic reaction to a drug that I had started the day before under the care of my primary care Doctor. When I called them to tell them what was going on, they did not care. they just said call me tomorrow and let me know if you can work.

Right At Home DC has a great motto and they mean well. However, the owners delegate WAY too much for their employees, then schedule lengthy meetings (2 hours long rambling about the same things over and over) and then expect the items discussed in the meeting to be done NOW. Right along with everything else. They fire people often. As in, they'll get rid of an average of about 2-3 people (of an office staff of 5) every 3-4 months or so. Then they don't have to pay benefits. Classy.

Rather than actually training new employees, they have them sit and watch movies about the company for a week and then expect them to be done training and know everything they need to know. They won't take any time and personally show the new employees what they want done their way-and they'll always have someone else tell you what they don't like about your performance. Very much a back-biting atmosphere.

The office I worked at was infested with cockroaches- and they didn't do anything about it. This is a HOME HEALTH COMPANY. Ironic.

One owner is constantly going on vacations, but expects employees to work on call 24/7 for a week on, week off or more. Pay is terrible and the benefits are laughable.

Answering phones, building and booking client and caregiver schedules, payroll processing, process billing, client and caregiver interaction on daily basis, inquiry calls for service, set up new clients in computer, make sure all folders for clients had all and correct paperwork, prepare deposits, and sometimes take to the bank. Processing paperwork for caregivers by state regulations, etc.
Learned alot here, about too many things to name them all, a couple payroll, state regs for home healthcare, etc.
Management, I would say was ok, the owner was the manager and was very controlling, micro managing, hormonally imbalanced and it came out in how she managed her company, always said things like well we should just close the doors and sell the business, which made us nervous about job security. She would talk down to us and not show us respect as human beings, She doesnt have children, so she wasnt very understanding when I had a sick child or check ups for the kids. My co workers were great!
The hardest part of the job was last minute scheduling.
The most enjoyable part of the job was establishing relationships and friendships, with clients and family members, and knowing how great I was at my job in finding them the perfect caregiver.
