A Typical Day at Work and My Experience
A typical day at Rivermark involves engaging with team members to ensure that our clients’ needs are met efficiently and professionally. The work is fast-paced but organized, with a strong emphasis on teamwork and attention to detail. Throughout the day, I focus on providing excellent service, solving problems, and supporting my colleagues whenever needed.

What I Believe I Have Learned
Working here has taught me the importance of effective communication, adaptability, and maintaining a positive attitude even during challenging situations. I’ve gained valuable skills in customer service, problem-solving, and time management. Most importantly, I’ve learned the significance of true leadership — leading with empathy, support, and integrity.

Management
The management team at Rivermark is exceptional. They are supportive, approachable, and genuinely invested in the success and well-being of their employees. They set clear expectations, provide guidance, and always make time to listen. Their leadership fosters a positive and motivating work environment where everyone feels valued.

Workplace Culture
The workplace culture here is welcoming, collaborative, and centered around mutual respect. It’s a place where your voice matters, and teamwork is highly encouraged. The company promotes a healthy work-life balance and truly cares about employee development and well-being.

The Hardest Part of the Job
The most challenging aspect of the job can be managing high-pressure situations and balancing multiple priorities at once. Sometimes, dealing with difficult or upset clients can be emotionally taxing. However, the support from management and colleagues makes it easier to handle these moments.

The Most Enjoyable Part of the Job
The most enjoyable part is helping clients and making a positive impact on their experience. I also enjoy working with a team that feels like a community — everyone genuinely cares about each other and strives to do their best. Seeing the results of our hard work and knowing I am part of a supportive environment makes my job fulfilling.

If you're looking for a career with room for advancement, a supportive team of managers, or, pay that keeps up with the current cost of living, this is NOT the place to be! 

The managers are nowhere near supportive or professional to say the least. They constantly contradict themselves, telling you to do one thing and then change their minds without telling you when expecting you to do another. Extremely micro-managing enviroment where everything you do is "picked apart" and questioned, be prepared to feel like you're being interogated each day and have reasoning always ready! 

In this position there's also a VERY HIGH level of sales that you're expected to meet at the end of each month along with a long list of call metrics For example, they want you to deliver the best service any credit union has to offer but they want your calls to be less than four minutes from start to finish, how can you deliver top quality member service this way?! They also score a handful of calls each month down to a "T" based off of three pages of scoring metrics. 

About a year and a half after being with this company, I had applied for two different positions that were posted internally, I was interviewed for both of the positions I had applied for but was NEVER followed up with in regards to the decision on EITHER position! I literally had to keep reaching out to HR and the hiring manager to see if a decision was made, I found out four weeks after the fact that I wasn't selected for either position.

As I mentioned above, do not waste your time with this joke of a credit union! Very little pay for the negative environoment, and high level of performance metrics you have to meet each month.

The majority of the people that work at the credit union are great people-driven, caring and feeling like their job has a purpose. They really care about their Members and how the Credit Union treats them. If you are lucky enough to work in one of the good departments-this place is a great place to work and the benefits are AMAZING!

Not every department here has an issue but several departments are run by Managers with an inherent lack of experience with high school like responses to conflict and coaching. Many Management and Leadership staff have issues dealing with conflict and let issues with staff linger unseasonably long. While most issues are resolved eventually, the lack of response and follow-through have left many staff with a lack of confidence towards their Leadership when it comes to problem resolution. 

Biggest issue is a lack of accountability. This is not enforced enough and often leads to bad feelings between departments/employees and causes projects to lag and stall. Rivermark should focus more on standards and enforcing accountability.

Those issues aside, this was an exciting place to work. They are always doing something new and seemed to be focused on promoting within. Many of the branches are community central and they have colorful, friendly members.

Advantis has two types of employees: those who have decided that they are able to tolerate the masses of workarounds and dysfunctional systems to fill a chair and collect a paycheck for years, and those who are slowly learning that their desire to make improvements and foster positive changes is not shared by upper management.
There are issues ingrained in management, some have been in their positions for decades and resentments between members of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) are apparent. There is an odd sense of secrecy between departments and general difficulty in collaboration between departments. In my short time here, I have seen multiple projects launched without key stakeholders being involved in the process, then when issues arise there are "fires to put out" and tensions between departments continue to increase.
Employees are under great amounts of scrutiny by management as well; they face great pressure to complete a number of tasks to perfection (or else a tiny mistake may come back to haunt them on a review later). There also is simply not enough time in the day to complete all that is asked to the point where employees begin to feel guilt for leaving on time. Work/life balance is sorely lacking and many employees feel that they cannot call in sick or face disappointment from their managers and a backlog of work to catch up on upon their return. All of this to say, that the wages Advantis pays do not outweigh the stresses faced on the job.

This seemed like a really good position for the first couple months but the honeymoon phase wears off quick. Sick and vacation time are shared, so tough luck if you're not feeling well and have to use vacation days. Every other company I've worked for has had separate hours for each.  They like to say they hire within but it is rare that they actually do. Everyone in management makes you feel bad for asking questions and they expect you to know everything. Instead of helping you out with an answer or explanation, they just send you a link to the policy/procedure page. They have a training program they make you do that is so boring and redundant. They go over how important members are and customer service. As if everyone in any customer service role didn't already know how important it is to listen and express empathy. They have a huge focus on selling even though they love to boast thay they're all about the member and not sales. The pay is pretty good but like they say, money doesn't buy happiness. The training when you first start is terrible. They don't teach you anything about their products and services. You're just expected to read articles and do learning modules. There's probably more I'm leaving out but overall I would not recommend this company. Especially if you want to move up eventually.

The training at Rivermark focused heavily on company culture, history, and internal values, but not enough time was spent properly preparing employees for the actual day-to-day role. Customer service banking is extremely fast-paced and stressful, especially for someone without prior banking experience, and the systems and procedures can be overwhelming to learn in such a short amount of time.

While management often said they were there to support and help employees succeed, the training felt rushed and inconsistent. The program was advertised as several months of training, but it felt much shorter once hands-on expectations started. A lot of the learning came down to searching through internal resources on your own while actively handling customers at the same time.

This may be a great workplace for someone who already has a strong banking background or experience using similar systems, but for someone completely new to banking, the learning curve is much steeper than what is communicated during hiring and training. The environment became very stressful because expectations were high, but the hands-on preparation did not feel sufficient for the complexity of the role.

Advantis Credit Union is a good company to work for. Their benefits were $30/month when I worked there for full coverage. In my opinion that is very good coverage. Advantis is a small credit union(120 or so employees and 45,000 members or so). Being a small credit union can be good and bad. I liked knowing everyone in the company, but it did tend to feel more "cliquey" than with the larger banks and credit unions I had worked for in the past. Being a small company is also a negative when it comes to moving up within the company. Be prepared to wait a long time for positions to open up. Another negative to being a smaller company is that change is implemented a lot more. I wasn't sure if the changes were thoroughly thought through sometimes because of how sudden they would be. One day your processing loans, the next your referring them to a loan processor whose position didn't exist a month before that. Branches are leased and not owned. Two of Advantis's busiest branches will have changed locations within the last 5 years. If these things don't bother you I'd recommend working at Advantis. Overall, a very good credit union who values and respects their employees.

Due to the amount of people who have input on a person'a annual review, it is common for the review to take place 2- 4 months late.

ELT sets unrealistic bonus goals, some of which Advantis hasn't even approached in over a year. 

Communication and collaboration between departments is an ongoing issue. It's typical to find out after a project ends that multiple departments (whom the projects outcome would affect) were not involved or notified of possible ramifications. 

The amount of projects in progress right now exceeds the capacity of the Credit Union. Employees across all departments are expected to serve on these projects, in addition to their regular duties, putting a strain on themselves and their coworkers. 

ELT has semi regular meetings with different departments to discuss news and updates regarding the Credit Union, and to ask for feedback- a step in the right direction- but they don't seem to realize how hard it can be to speak your mind on sensitive topics.  And they often get defensive when someone does have something to say.

ELT needs to take a good hard look at the work culture they are perpetuating because it's certainly not in line with being the best company an employee has worked for.

The first week that I was hired on I was asked by my supervisor about my professional goals. I had expressed interest in eventually moving into a leadership/management position eventually. With this in mind, we worked together to create goals that focused my intentions to get to that outcome. Throughout the following year and a half I had the opportunity to attend an internal mentorship course, take numerous online courses recommended by our Learning and Development team, read recommended books on leadership, take part in and eventually lead a High Performance Team and also attend a 6-month college course on leadership thanks to a development grant from Advantis Credit Union. Along with close support from my supervisor, Advantis as a whole allowed me to follow my goals and because of this I have recently been promoted to a leadership position within the company. Throughout this journey I have also made impactful connections and have found passions and talents that I was unaware of beforehand. Advantis helped me grow professionally and personally, and I know that they look forward to continuing to help others as well.

-Prepared and maintained accurate records of all customer service calls with present and prospective members.
-Assisted members in obtaining specialized services from other credit union departments as necessary; providing help to members with specific inquiries or service problems.
-Practiced and adhered to all internal policies, procedures in support of risk management and overall safety soundness and the credit unions compliance with all regulatory requirements, e.g. Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Reserve Requirement for Depository Institutions (Regulation D) etc.
-Provided customer service and technical support for all incoming customer calls, including assistance with website navigation and escalations.
-Preformed other related duties as assigned; Inbound/outbound calls, Opening/Closing accounts, CDss and IRA’s, Wire transfers, Sales and investment services, transferring/dispensing funds.
