The interview process - it was over the phone and I enjoyed talking with the person I interviewed with, he assessed my skills and was very personable. It was about an hour phone call, then I got an offer letter the next day.

However, the base pay was less than what I expected. At the time, I had worked another job that paid about $5 more than what they were offering and they asked for proof of my paystub to make sure I was making that much and even then, they only increased $2 than their initial offer and said that "management denied a request for anything more." I've talked to other nurses that have worked here and started about $5 more than what rolling hills offered and they won't increase your base pay unless they really like you. And if you get a good performance yearly eval, you only get a 50 cent raise if you don't call out more than 6 times per year.

During training, I felt thrown to the wolves. It was so busy and I had about 9 patients on my 2nd week and my preceptor barely had time to train me because they were also very busy. It does seem like a lot of charting at first and sometimes you don't get done charting until about 3-4 pm because you're met with so many interruptions. Sometimes you have to go down to the cafeteria for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with the patients depending on what unit you are on which can interrupt your workflow. You're interrupted with a lot of phone calls from patients' family members or admissions that are sometimes back-to-back and admissions does not care if it is shift change. The most inconvenient thing with a new admission is that if it is a male, it is often hard to find another male that is able to  do a skin assessment, and the patient cannot go anywhere (even to the bathroom) alone until the skin assessment is completed.

Now for unit assignments, it is inconvenient not knowing which unit you will work on until 10 minutes before your shift starts. The assignments are made at 5 pm or 5 am depending on which shift you're working. I was on my "home unit" for about 1 month until they floated me to other units. This is only inconvenient because if I am floated to a unit downstairs,  it takes about 5 minutes to walk down there. There were also often times where I am assigned to be a tech and not a nurse, which I have never been at a hospital that does that to the nurses. The only people that do get to be on their assigned unit as a nurse are the ones who have the most seniority or the ones who date their managers. If you're working a shift that other seniority nurses are working, you will likely get floated and there's nothing you can do about it.

The only good thing about working here is the coworkers and the psychiatrists are amazing people to work with.



The co-workers here are great for the most part. A few RNs will make you wonder how they even got their license in the first place or got to work for that matter. Management sends rules down the pipeline that are devoid of all logic and reason for the sake of appearing to be productive or safe aka new coffee rule where patients cannot get their own coffee to stop spread of COVID-19 but they still sit within 6 feet of each other in the dayrooms sharing just about everything from writing utensils, to chairs, phones, and books. They also still have two patients to a room in which they share a bathroom so the whole coffee and snack rules is pointless but someone has to look like a superstar for making the rule. When it comes to money, there are no rules.

Understaffing is a constant problem at this hospital but thats the nature of business. They will run you on the bare minimum and tell you to deal with it. If you want to survive this job you have to disconnect mentally and do your best not to care about the blatant disregard for employee safety from the higher ups. Our new CEO has made it increasingly difficult to deny patients so the units can be pretty dangerous and short staffed at times. 

The pay is mediocre at best and i would not recommend day shift as night shift gets shift differential. You will incur major life stress for not enough pay and it will burn you out. You might argue that seeing the groups and helping patients all day long is rewarding but it hardly is with the increasingly psychotic and violent patients. 

All in all, with the right mindset of coming in to just do a job, it is not bad. The co-workers make it fun and rewarding at times and the patients can give you genuine experiences youll never forget in both good and bad ways. If you can just handle managements occasional pointless rules they pass down through the pipeline and roll with the punches it can be a decent job for a little while

The work culture is very toxic and unprofessional in the Admissions department. They will throw someone with very little training and no experience in on the job and expect them to know everything right off the bat. They want you to answer phones, handle referrals, pre-admit and admit patients, sort through belongings, pull insurance, screen patients at the door, and check vitals. Coworkers are very rude and will stop at nothing to patronize or belittle your work ethic. Admissions counselors will treat the reception staff like they’re beneath them. You will wear lots of hats and juggle many different responsibilities that weren’t necessarily in your job description.  Management puts profits over people and seems to care more about quantity than quality. The Admissions department is a total dumpster fire. They are dealing with staffing issues and oftentimes patients will wait several hours or even all day before they are seen by a counselor and taken to their units. Patients will even code in Admissions due to having to wait so long to be seen and feeling like they’ve been forgotten. I’ve witnessed the Admission staff using vulgar and inappropriate language directed towards patients and staff. The nurses handling referrals won’t stagger the patients and they’ll arrive all at the same time and they constantly exceed capacity. When units are full patients will sleep on the floor. Oftentimes patients will be sent to the wrong units as well. Counselors will also take way too long in their assessments which will add onto the wait time. Management does not care about your safety and they do not have security as well. 

I’ve worked at this hospital for less than two months, and am already very disappointed in management and how a handful of the nursing staff treats other staff members, as well as patients.

There can be poor communication due to being understaffed and having a high turnover rate. For example, a patient was told that she was being discharged the next day. That morning when she inquired about her discharge and her ride to the airport at 8 am, the nurse told her that she wasn’t going home, with no supporting evidence on how he knew this. Ten minutes later, transport showed up ready to take her and had all of her discharge paperwork ready.  

As a new hire, I believe that it’s absolurely imperative to train your staff well, and to give them grace for mistakes- even in a professional, healthcare-based environment. I’ve worked with some nurses who are incredible, and some nurses who have talked behind my back to upper management and who have gone off on me for making a simple mistake when I didn’t know any better. Upper management shows favoritism to staff, and doesn’t care for the well-being of the nursing staff.

I don’t think that the patients are given enough to do. There isn’t a gym, there are very few board games and activities, no video games, and the outdoor space is tiny. Food is excellent. 

The CEO is very caring and visits each unit regularly. He’s very kind. The admission staff and maintenance are all great. There are a couple of nursing supervisors who are cool. It isn’t an absolute nightmare if you want the experience. Just be ready to get in trouble for every tiny thing that you do, and be prepared to work with some jerks.

You will be assigned a "home unit." Given 3 days of orientation. Then floated to any unit at any time, even mid-shift. Ratios are completely unsafe, assignments are not based on acuity, but rather on room numbers/hallway placement. Management roles are selected based on time spent with the company rather than possession of strong leadership qualities. 
It is VERY common to be the only RN on a unit. So, when you need a cosign, have a question about charting, or need help with a potential code...you have to call a manager's cell number. More times than not, you get a voicemail. 


Managers only show face on a unit after a code has been called, regardless of how many times they've been warned about situations reaching boiling points. Then they will blame you, the nurse responsible for 10 - 15 psychiatric patients. They call off staff left and right to save money. But don't worry, you can use your PTO to make up for lost wages. Patient and staff safety is not a priority to the CEO, CNO, and other non-existent management members. The patient care techs are overworked. 

The admissions department is comprised of non-licensed personnel who state patients are "psychotic, manic etc." without having the clinical competency to make said claims. They admit patients knowing full well there is no bed or enough staff to care for them. They even had children sleeping on mattresses on the floor around the nurses' station. Why? Because children have health insurance and RHH can profit off of them. 

The psychiatrist and social workers are top-notch. The group therapy at RHH is far superior to the hospitals in the area. The food in the cafeteria is also great.  

Being a Psych Nurse is a difficult job but the co-workers are great at Rolling Hills.  We have each other's backs.  Don't really feel that same way about the nursing management team, however, as they seem to only point out the things anyone ever does wrong.  If you are hired for a position, such as a Nurse, there are not very many opportunities to move up or to move into different or more challenging roles.  Nursing leadership does not typically offer much praise to employees who do a great job, and they are not the types that are hands-on.  The nursing managers will leave the nurses drowning with an excessive number of patients while they enjoy their nights and/or weekends off.  The CEO is wonderful but he has recently resigned to take a position with another company.  Staffing is an issue a lot of the time, but that's probably just typical for most hospitals. There is quite a bit of staff turnover as well, but there are a few staff members that have stayed around for several years.  Additionally, there isn't great housekeeping at the hospital.  Techs are supposed to do a lot of the cleaning at the same time as they are taking care of patient needs.  The hospital makes the staff pay $4 for a meal from the cafeteria (which is expensive to charge the staff) but upper management gets their meals for free.  The salary is fairly competitive but the health insurance is expensive and doesn't provide very good coverage, so that's something to consider.  They offer a 401(k) with some matching, and there is a small bonus offered to new nurses ($3500).  Overall, it is a good nursing job with great co-workers.

Inadequate leadership. Leadership is promoted through likeability and seniority (aka loyalty) instead of individuals with quality leadership skills. Units are unsafely short staffed, and patients are put on inappropriate units during the admissions process. The harder one works on the floor than those units will be short-staffed with no compensation. In turn, toxic gossip and favoritism from leadership create an unhealthy work environment setting the stage for what's expected by non-leadership employees. It's not the individuals hired that's the issue; it's an upper management problem that drastically needs restructuring, maturity, and decency. Management will engage in bashing the Admissions Department when they should work on building relationships between the departments. Depending on who you're working with will determine the danger and codes on the unit. 
Due to the profit drive, autistic individuals will be put in the largest unit in the hospital as they deteriorate due to the inappropriate and harmful environment.
HR is non-existent and utilizes an old-school, non-scientific approach to Human Resources. There are no exit interviews, no employee appreciation, and no reviews of the patient satisfaction surveys.

After 1 week of orientation ( mainly company policy, harassment etc) I spent a total of 1 day doing intakes with assistance. But with the intake office being so busy ( and somewhat short staffed since it was a holiday) it wasn't very thorough and the person I worked with was a temp filling in.

My first night working a full shift? I was left alone at the end of the shift for 4 hours. Oh! and by the way? There is NO security at Rolling Hills. So when the police drop off an individual and you're working by yourself? It is dangerous. Even the head nurse came down and said " You're here alone? But you just started....that's not right" ( and she was supposed to speak with my supervisor.

I notified my supervisor who said it was a fluke and the second night? My coworker said I would be alone again for over half my shift. Since it was a Friday (busy) night I asked my coworker to call my supervisor as I would be leaving as soon as it slowed down enough. His exact reply? " I don't blame you man."

I understand at some point employees need to sink or swim....but after working 1 day? That's a danger to staff and clients.

Constantly short staffed. Management was unresponsive to almost any request or notice from night shift. Maintenance was questionable at best. All the light bulbs in the parking lot burnt out before they replaced any. Thermostats were not controllable by employees at night. 82° on night shift.. Vacation time accrual went great but I took 3 days off in 18 months. One for family funeral and the other two I took by calling out after being denied with 90 days notice. The employee health insurance was less of a joke and more of a travesty. It was common knowledge that everything was denied at first and this company owns the insurance company.
Pay was good but the atmosphere was frustrating. It sounds petty but almost every Employee of the Month was a day shift office worker. In 18 months, only one night shift nurse was selected for EOM. If you're desperate or want to try out psych this would be a good place. Otherwise, keep looking.

The good: some of my co-workers, psychiatrists are pretty good, providing care to patients who have endured complex trauma. 
The bad: where does one start? Lazy co-workers and no accountability. No security and some very acute patients. Staffing shortage.  Very little housekeeping. You want a clean hospital? Clean it yourself. Poor building maintenance. High staff turnover and burnout. Management attitude that all employees are replaceable. It’s a toxic place to work, causing trauma for their own employees.  No support. Employees only hear what they’re doing wrong. Admissions must accept patients that are too acute and that there aren’t beds and nursing is expected to deal with it. Total lack of consistent training so you aren’t prepared for your job, but don’t make a mistake or you will be crucified. Little to no raises. Pay is lagging behind the market rate if you aren’t a nurse. People are quitting. Every day. The place gives its employees PTSD. Truly.
