Rush University Medical Center is in my opinion a much better place to work than many other institutions / companies / teaching hospitals in the area. I work for the Decision Support / Budget Office and I have to say that management is exceptional. Respect for peoples' lives, healthy balance, appreciation, understanding - I couldn't ask for more when it comes to simple basic "human towards another human" decency (and I've seen different at my prior workplaces). Typical day at work is filled with responsibilities but if you are open to learning and want to do your job well management will make sure you get all the help you need to succeed. I wouldn't be able to list all the things I've learned so far, there are simply too many. If you are willing to "have management's back" they will have yours as well. For the first time in my life I am able to leave work at work, come home and never worry about it, enjoy my evenings and weekends, I literally don't feel that I am at work when I am at the office, I probably enjoy my job and workplace environment much more than an average employee in this country. Like in all other places there is a little bit of politics and long ago established connections involved, but if you are at the point in your life to be able to tune it out, let go of negativity and judgement, you will be happy with Rush and people working there. My job is demanding at times, which gives me a lot of satisfaction when done well. This is truly a great place to work, therefore if one isn't ready to take responsibility for their mistakes, be at peace with them and willing to learn from them, and not at the point in their life where they appreciate what they are given they should leave open positions to people who will.

Numbers and national recognition is all they care about.  The employees at this institution are hands down the lowest priority. I have never worked for such unprofessional, racist/discriminating idiots in my life.  DON'T LET THE NAME FOOL YOU! I used to feel proud telling people I worked at Rush, and now I realize nothing else matters to them except the higher ups' fattening up their pockets.  They don't care about actual patient safety or care, it's all about their status.  You'd think as much as they push their hypocritical I-CARE values in the thousands of emails you receive that someone in power would have some common sense, but I have never come across a "leader" in this whole institution who actually cared about the patients.  Then, to talk about mental awareness and work-life balance?? They punish and reprimand you when things happen in your life.  Never have I ever worked for such an institution where the turn over rate in EVERY department has been so high.  Their HR department is a joke and does NOT stand bias or equal to their employees.  People are miserable here and cannot stress how unprofessional and racist they are, but if you're white, male, and gay, you'll be the bees knees! 
Examine the rest of the reviews for this horrible and toxic place. The number 1 complaint is management. If they can't keep their ducks in order, how do you think they treat and "manage" the staff below them? 
Here's another little tidbit, why is it just now the whole institution is undergoing "staff changes"? THE WHOLE INSTITUTION! That is including Nursing, HR, Kitchen, Housekeeping, Pharmacy, Employee Services, Wellness Center, Anesthesia, the list goes on. Guess they can't keep people to stay.....

My experience at Rush was invaluable. I began as a student in Health Systems Management, worked as an intern in the Department of Medicine directly reporting to the hospital administrator, progressed to consulting and managing operations for the Rush & Rush Copley physician group practices.

I learned how a great university health system works, provides for its community and remains solvent financially. I also learned to use & train the healthcare applications used by hospital and the physician group practices.

My internship was extraordinary; the hospital administrator could not have been more generous in sharing his knowledge and letting me get right into the real work of healthcare administration. Management in my positions with physician billing were great & I was afforded the opportunity to train and then assist on implementation, training, GoLive & support of the Epic practice management system. My coworkers were friendly and helpful.

The most challenging part of the job was probably meeting the needs of the clients only due to the volume in terms of the groups I was supporting.

There isn't any one thing that was most enjoyable; the entire experience was incredible. Working for a large, prestigious healthcare system in the middle of a great city was exhilirating and exciting. I met such wonderful, talented people all of whom were so happy to share knowledge and experience. Really great place to work.

I worked here for about 4 years on medical staff as a clinical health psychologist and as a faculty member (assistant professor) of their medical school. It has been hands down the best place I have ever worked in my career and was my dream job. Coworkers were excellent, from the highest level of leadership to the support staff in non-clinical roles and everything in between. The culture of professionalism and mutual respect was wonderful; it was great to have colleagues who trusted one another and there was almost no “micro-managing.” Praise was given when deserved and nothing ever seemed punitive or retributory when constructive criticism was provided. Comp and benes were pretty decent. The patient population was diverse and were consistently provided with clear knowledge about patient rights and responsibilities, which felt very supportive to staff so that we could do our jobs and serve patients the best way and the right way we knew how without having to worry about a silly or totally off-base complaint from a patient (rarely if ever happened that I know of) creating a backlash from management against clinicians. The only reason I left was because I had to relocate due to personal reasons. And I miss it all the time! No job I have had since in similar settings compares!

Working for this company has been a great experience. Each day is unpredictable. My daily duties are greeting the patients, checking them in and out for their appointments, answering phone calls, filing/faxing, writing & editing documents. Our doctors sometimes have special requests such as calling another office for a patient's medical records while the patient is being seen for a visit or just simply scanning a document and emailing it to them for their personal records. Some days are busier than others so I've learned to manage my time well. There are days that we are short staffed, which can make things difficult but my co-workers are a great help with assisting me when they see that I am overloaded. They will help me by answering the phones when there are several patients that I need to assist at the front desk. One of the most challenging parts of this job is handling an unhappy or unfriendly patient. There are many situations that I am able to handle such as getting a drug refill taken care of or contacting the doctor if the patient is being demanding but other times I turn to my manager for help when I've tried everything I could and the patient is still unhappy. The most enjoyable part of my job is making our patients feel at ease when they come in for their appointments. Many first time patients don't know what to expect so I keep them well informed of what doctor they are seeing, what their visit is for and what they should expect throughout the visit. It helps them to relax and I am glad that I can help.

Rush has many wonderful people all working together to take excellent care of patients. As an RN, it is absolutely a good place to learn and advance your career. Many RNs seek out Rush because of its well known pre-paid tuition program through Rush University.  It is overall a good organization for nurses in terms of technology and conveniences. However the longer you stay at Rush you'll really learn the culture, which isn't for everyone. Senior leadership is pretty disconnected and out of touch from frontline staff. Concerns are dismissed or ignored. Unit managers sit in their office with doors closed. If concerns are addressed, management is very good at saying "we'll get back to you," and then the subject disappears. Very poor sense of belonging or feeling valued compared to other organizations. Department managers are promoted based on who they are friends with rather than their experience for a position. Managers who do not get along with senior leaders and who stick up for department staff don't tend to stay around too long. The organization is struggling with staffing related to COVID and shortages in all departments, much like other hospitals. As a result, the quality of care is going down due to being forced to do more for patients with less resources. 

As a physician working at [Hospital Name] for the past several years, I have witnessed firsthand the dedication and expertise that define this institution. The hospital maintains high clinical standards, with well-equipped facilities and access to advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies. Patient care is a priority, supported by a multidisciplinary team that collaborates effectively to deliver comprehensive treatment plans.

The nursing staff is exceptional, demonstrating both skill and compassion in managing patient needs. Administrative processes, while sometimes bureaucratic, are generally efficient, and leadership is receptive to feedback aimed at improving workflow and patient outcomes. The hospital also invests in continuing education, offering staff regular training and professional development opportunities.

That said, like many healthcare facilities, the hospital faces challenges. Staffing shortages during peak seasons can strain resources, and certain departments could benefit from additional equipment or upgraded infrastructure. Nonetheless, these challenges are met with a strong culture of teamwork and resilience.

Overall, it is a place where quality care meets a commitment to innovation and learning. As a physician, I am proud to be part of a team that prioritizes patient well-being while fostering an environment of professional growth and collaboration.

I appreciated my experience working at Rush University Health Systems.  It was interesting, rewarding working with pediatric psych patients, and taught me valuable leadership skills.

I saw many psychiatric illnesses, and it was sometimes sad interacting with children with little support at home, or having past exposure to abusive home situations.

The work to life balance was poor.  I worked 3-11, and my commute was 45 minutes.  There was some sort of work meeting or group meeting with the psychiatrist almost every week, which increased my commute time.  You were expected to join various organizations to get further involved with the organization.  The doctors were fair in my opinion; one resident I worked with had never seen a blood glucose machine!  The medical center focused a lot on research, advancement, and the latest technologies which I liked! However, the management expected staff to live, breathe, and give their life for Rush; in some respects in closely resembled a good ole' boys fraternity.  Little diversity in leadership compared to other organizations I've worked with, a lot of nepotism, and entitled families, patients, and staff!

Great learning experience, but beware, your job is not that secure.  Any little mistake or error will be nit picked with a fine toothed comb, leaving you with anxiety and bewilderment.  

Great place to work for 2-5 years!

The best part about working at Rush are the benefits, especially the availability to go to Rush University for free (as long as you're accepted)

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful thing about Rush varies from department to department and how much support departmental leadership actually offers its employees. In general, the hospital is in financial trouble after a series of decisions that they don't have the cash flow to support. There's a huge push to cut back and save money while making a big push to expand market share. 

TLDR: The hospital is working a lot harder with fewer resources and increasingly unhappy employees. Senior leadership tends to make decisions that are not fully thought out.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Work environment and culture vary by department. When I started at Rush, it was a great and collaborative place to work. When I left, everyone I spoke to across the hospital seemed to be burnt out and at various stages of frustration. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Start early, work all day, put in extra hours to get work done & get paid a median wage in comparison to other academic centers. There is no work-life balance.

This company doesn’t abide by their values, management cares more about meeting financial goals than great quality work vs quantity to bring in revenue and the mental sanity of the staff (burn out). There is NO training you sink or swim and having staff deal with revenue you would think there would be thorough revenue cycle training since you’re dealing with the finances but Rush lives up to their name, they R U S H! The turnover is high, the morale is extremely low and nepotism is a problem. You have to pay for parking which is INSANELY expensive along with the Rush gym. As much as we contribute to the company it should be paid. The PTO is a joke (paid Holidays comes out of your own PTO bank), you have to use your cellphone to work and we weren’t reimbursed nor did we receive a stipend for cellphone usage or buying our own equipment, we had to buy our own equipment if we didn’t already have a computer and micromanagement is extremely HIGH. There’s also no structure and no professional development. 

Pros
Teamwork is great, meditation rooms, Flex Time, we have Starbucks, and you work remotely if you choose to do so.

Cons
Low pay increases we received a 2% raise when inflation is up 8%, workloads are unrealistic, the staff do not have support from management, the department has had 3 managers in a years stance, inconsistent adherence to core values.
