Sstar Family Center is more than just an average health center. Sstar meets the needs of recovering addicts (MAT Program). Sstar provides a detox center on the premises for those in need of recovery. Sstar provides psychiatric care, endocrinolgy care, Internal Medicine. Sstar provides inpatient and outpatient services and has a combative woman's center to help those who are being abused. Sstar has navigators to help those in need of shelter, emergency food, and assists those who do not have health insurance. Sstar is a pediatric and adult family practice with many advantages to help patients and the community. Sstar has 2 locations one at 400 Stanley st and one at 1010 South Main st. Both in Fall River, MA. 1010 South Main st opens early morning two days a week to accommodate those receiving methadone services at Lifeline which is attached to Sstar or to accommodate those who prefer early morning appointments.

A typical day at Sstar started at the office. Began the day with entering new admission c-map data as well as making sure the previous day's data was entered and dispersed accordingly. Picking up information regarding new hospital admissions and locations around the state. Set out to appropriate behavioral health units statewide to meet with new admissions for the day. Translations for Client (patient) and Doctor and/or Psychiatric staff as needed, Client Counseling as needed. Client Psych-Social if possible and goal setting discussion with staff and client. Finishing the day at the office filling out appropriate paper work for the day's tasks.
The most enjoyable part of my job was bringing some hope and confidence to clients whom with out someone to help them communicate their desires or problems and listen to what they are saying would not be able to. Because I am able to speak their language, I believe they feel much more safe in an otherwise unfamiliar, possibly scary situation.

Expect to be here more than you are home. Long hours, always short staffed, frequent gossip and rumor spreading agency-wide. Feels like working in a middle school. Management pushes people out that they don't want to pay anymore and puts their responsibilities  on other employees.  Don't expect extra pay with your extra responsibilities, you WILL be working the job of 3 people for barely the pay of one. Decisions are made with seemingly no prior thought or common sense, and issues are only handled once they occur rather than preemptively.  Very few positives, most coworkers are good and friendly, but be careful there is a lot of internal drama between departments. Love interacting with and helping the patients and community but the environment here is incredibly toxic and oppressive.

A typical work day's duties vary as need arises, at least on a weekly basis I am asked to purchase office or medical supplies, receive invoices and deliveries.

I've learned to track expenses for State and Federal grants, detailed medical product information, and how to record minutes using the PDSA format (Plan, Do, Study, Act)

Management is very accomodating, however need to be on the same page as lower management and work in unison. Division of managment decisions creates confusion and frustration for all staff members. Lack of comminucation is also a problem, making my job as liason difficult at times.

Taking part in quality control meetings have been the most enjoyable part of my job, this is where participation and teamwork can make positive changes.

Overall, I would not advise getting involved with SSTAR. I loved my actual job, but for being hired by SSTAR and dealing with my supervisor, it was not worth it.  The actual hiring process took about two months. My co-workers expressed to me how awful SSTAR was and advised me to continue applying to other jobs before I even really started. My supervisor was never clear in the expectations of me and that was the most challenging part of of the position. I felt as though my supervisor did not care about my clients and only the ones they directly worked with.  I was very much taken advantage of as a new employee and HR was anything but helpful. For my particular position there was no job advancement and little job security. Although I could go on, this type of work environment could work for some, but leaving was the best decision that I made.

During my internship, I gained valuable experience and learned a lot of new skill. The team I worked with was incredibly supportive and welcoming, creating a positive and encouraging environment that allowed me to grow professionally. Everyone was patient and willing to teach me, taking the time to explain tasks, provide feedback, and share insights that enhanced my understanding of the work. I was able to develop a deeper knowledge of the industry and improve my skills in areas like communication, time managment, and problem-solving. Additionally,  I had the opportunity to contribute to various projects, which allowed me to apply my academic knowledge in a real-world setting. Overall, this internship was a rewarding experience that has prepared me for future roles, and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from such a skilled and helpful team. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
It was a pleasure working with the employee's and client's.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Remembering my passwords, procedures, and  making a mistake in processing clients insurance paperwork.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Professional, sense of humor, caring, empathy, trusting, respect for the person.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
It was never typical,  client would be seen by Medical, then directed to admissions at SSTAR or other facilitys. If admitted, clients intake form entered in system. Client is giving meal while waiting to be processed to appropriate unit.  Paperwork follows client documentation entered by office.

The work you do is generally good, but the support and management is just not there. Used to be a good place to work but has recently gotten extremely top heavy. The C-suite is now larger than the number of nurses in the health center. There is no training for new people, so as soon as they hire people they lose them. Used to have a really good time off policy but that has been gutted recently and replaced with more platitudes about doing the work for the patients. The patients are largely unhappy because there are no appointments, yet not enough patients show up to keep the providers occupied. 

I loved my job at SSTAR.   I loved helping the population that I served and I learned a great deal about insurance, concurrent reviews, conflict management and resolution, clinical work in general and psychoeducational groups.  My Clinical Director was marvelous and I still have a positive relationship with her to this day.  I was able to make other friends at SSTAR as well.  The hardest part of my job is watching clients continually filter through the system and the most enjoyable part of my job is helping them to make life changes so that they never have to filter through the system again.

The amount of work expected of an employee here was insane. I was under compensated, under appreciated, and expected to work insane hours. Co-workers were the only saving grace to this job and were helpful and supportive, however management was non-existant and I didn't even have a direct supervisor for 8+ months. There was little opportunity for advancement and training and management keeps you there by promising "opportunities for advancement" which never come to fruition. 
The most enjoyable part of the job was the clients and the flexibility to adapt groups appropriately.
