My time as a new medical assistant at SNAHC provided valuable insights as I entered the healthcare field. This review reflects my honest perspective.

Work Environment: The workplace culture at SNAHC was informal, which had both positive and negative aspects. On the positive side, it fostered a comfortable atmosphere. However, it frequently resulted in favoritism, where some employees received leniency while others did not. For example, I saw a coworker openly using their phone for the majority of their shift, even with their supervisor, who happened to be their friend, witnessing this behavior. This inconsistency in rule enforcement was common throughout the workplace. Furthermore, hardworking employees often found themselves taking on additional responsibilities to compensate for less productive team members.

Training: The training was unorganized due to lack of coordination among trainers. Each trainer had their own approach and expectations, leading to inconsistencies in the training process.

Pay: It's worth noting that the pay for medical assistants did not consistently align with the scope of responsibilities. Many of us were tasked with duties beyond our initial job descriptions, as hiring specialized staff would be money out of their pockets.

Overall, I would recommend this job to recent graduates seeking experience in the healthcare field. It's unfortunate that the turnover rate is so high but a lot of changes are needed. I hope this feedback contributes to improving the workplace for the sake of the patients who rely on care at SNAHC.

This can be considered my exit interview/survey as I never received one. SNAHC has a lot wrong with it. They underpay staff, have a toxic work environment ( thanks to the Executive team and HR), there is no room for advancement in several departments, salary cuts if you transfer within the company, annual reviews are a joke and are unhelpful ( I haven't seen anyone get more than 3% raise in the two years I was there regardless of how much they went above and beyond), departments are pitted against each other, most managers/ supervisors do not have the training to best support their workers, there is a lack of communication within the organization as a whole, upper management turns a blind eye to problems that staff brings up several times. We get several surveys a year, regarding what SNAHC can do better but there is no action or change implemented. SNAHC is opening new locations without addressing the issues at their original locations. Staff is only asking for pay to be competitive with other FQHCs and that is not the case. I wish SNAHC would take employee retention seriously and actually try to make some changes to the organization to promote a healthy workplace.

Overall, upper management should take a closer look at the day-to-day leadership within the department. There seems to be a disconnect, as the level of support and communication from the direct manager is often lacking. Interactions are not always the kindest and can sometimes come across as passive-aggressive, which creates an uncomfortable work environment. Improving leadership, communication, and overall professionalism would help create a healthier culture and encourage employees to feel more supported. The workload expectations are often unrealistic, and employees are still expected to keep up even when they communicate that they are overwhelmed or falling behind. Unfortunately, support from management is very limited, and even when help is requested, it is rarely provided. This creates a stressful environment where employees are left to manage heavy responsibilities without the guidance or assistance needed to succeed. Until meaningful changes are made, this may not be the most supportive place for employees seeking a positive work environment.

The positions I had were-Patient Service Rep./Behavioral health receptionist. Priority was the Call center. A typical day there were estimate  300+ calls/day, it was monitored, how many calls were answered,dropped and went to voice mail and how long conversation took place.  The system kept track for each individual. Two people were responsible for all incoming calls, scheduling, cancellations,new patient registration, verify insurance, answer questions, and conversation was to be limited to a 3 min time frame.when one of us would be out it was very hard to find someone to help. I had it down because I had the experience from previous company both used same programs. The last two companies I had worked for were Native American facilities. I am a Native American myself. I applied to the companies to be able to work with the native american community of  those areas, one was considered Urban, the other Rural. The hardest part for me is that I am not Bi-lingual. I have learn that I would work with a wide variety of ethnicity. I can get along with fellow co-workers its very easy for me.

SNAHC really is a place where we get our hands into the communities needs & make a difference. While it’s not always a walk in the park, the intrinsic rewards we see in our patients lives make all the difference. Being a community health center in today’s current climate is a challenge in and of itself, yet we still strive to ensure the needs of the community we serve are met & more. The leadership here is outstanding, and really purpose-driven when it comes to ensuring access to care, equality, and creating a culture of continuous improvement. The staff share that commonality, and build that into their day-to-day work. It’s is always inspiring walking into work everyday. And yes, while there are moments of process frustration, long days, complaints, and the negatives of human nature—-that is everywhere from a convenience store to a Fortune 500 company; and most certainly in healthcare! All the work & dedication from the staff make this place work, you just have to be in it to win it. I definitely have & then some.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Frontline staff, patients.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Never fully staffed due to work environment/pay. Majority of the time you won’t get your breaks and will take late lunches with no coverage due to short staffing.   Everyone you report to is in a clique including HR.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Favoritism. Nepotism. “We’re up here, you’re down there” type of leadership. Higher ups/Leadership cannot take negative opinions without retaliation. Hostile and toxic environment. High expectations and responsibilities with low pay. Always understaffed with no support from management. No organization, open communication or structure.  New hires are thrown into their role with no training.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
No such thing as work/life balance. Constantly stressed. Management is never on the same page, rules are never the same and change every other day depending on the person you ask.

I loved my job, my coworkers, and my bosses at SNAHC. It has wonderful people, a collaborative atmosphere, and they do very important work: health care for Native Americans, as well as all other groups. Why did I leave? One of the managers was spreading a rumor that I was unqualified, so my job was going sour and I knew things would only get worse for me. When a long-time employee had trouble keeping up with new responsibilities, I willingly took the fall for her, even though I knew I'd get canned. It worked. I got canned and the long-timer was off the hook. (She still doesn't know I did that for her and neither does anyone else.) I still have great respect and affection for my coworkers; they're good folks and very well qualified. It truly is a great place to work. The whole staff cares deeply about the patients, and the atmosphere is pleasant, so don't let one person spoil your opinion of the place. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Very unorganized and poorly managed. There appears to be a great deal of nepotism and unprofessional conduct. The quality of care of the patients is lacking and inconsiderate of the needs of community members.This facility provides their workers with limited professional advancement, which impedes the workers from enhancing their skill level. This facility has an issue with being a revolving door where there is limited job security and the security of your employment is not dependent on your work competence, but instead dependent on the ability of the worker to concede with the unethical practices of the management. Your skill level will be constantly in question by management who are not even in your profession and that do not know anything about your field.  If you are seeking a positive supportive and fair work environment that values there workers and their skill level then this company is definitely not recommended.

Do not trust the HR department it seems like they fired/let go of their own team. Executive management does not lead by example, there is favortism and the people who get promoted is only because they have become close with the hiring manager. The performance reviews are a joke for the most part. How is it possible that there is a 1-5 scale but no one ever gets a 5 and 4 are pretty rare. Always expect a 3 or less even if you have gone above and beyond that year. Company culture starts at the top and theirs sucks. They end of loosing good people because of the bad cultural environment. It’s rare to find an employee that has been there more than 4 years….most people leave or are let go and when people leave it’s such a mess to pick up the pieces because they leave with knowledge and the rest struggle to keep the routine going and our management expects us to just know what to do with little training and guidance and when mistakes happen we are disciplined. I’ve been at SNAHC for over a year now and I still love it. Although I’m not involved in direct patient care, I feel as though I am part of a larger team that is making a real and measurable impact on the lives of Sacramento’s most at-risk and medically indigent patients. The agency expects a lot of their employees but they also provide ample resources to accomplish whatever training goal or needs the individual employee may have. I appreciate that my thoughts and opinions are valid and never disregarded.

Every young agency has room for improvement and SNAHC is only six years old. Personally, I find it exhilarating and meaningful to be a part of the team that is making healthcare in Sacramento better every day.
