I became the first non-volunteer person associated with a volunteer-based indigent care clinic. This position afforded the clients more continuity of care and follow up of lab results and referrals.A care Clinic was initiated at the local homeless shelter to provide greater access to this population while freeing up space at the regular weekly clinic for other indigent and uninsured individuals to be cared for. A dental clinic was also established by a coalition of individuals and groups interested in bridging the gap in this area of healthcare for the uninsured.

I learned a tremendous amount about the homeless population and their unique healthcare needs, as well as the importance of mental and dental health to the overall health of us all.

Management was somewhat diffuse and included a Medical Director and a "medical" director, as well as other individuals with a specific interest or "stake" in the InReach Clinic.

My co-workers were primarily volunteers in the direct provision of medical services. Supervisory and hospital personnel assisted with expanding programs; a community group was responsible for development of the dental programs; and I became part of a community group with the City of Albany in addressing the issue of homelessness in the community as a part of this issue in the State And Country.

The hardest part of the job was being responsible to so many different leaders of Samaritan Health And Albany General Hospital. I also found it difficult to maintain a detached perspective in how the patients were cared for.

My enjoyment of the job came primarily from working with this patient population, and being able to work with so many different organizations and individuals of the community with similar concerns and goals.

Typical day at work? Short staffed all of the time. Terrible ratio of Medical Assistants to providers (one Medical Assistant had to work with MULTIPLE providers at once).
Management is hired based on favoritism and nepotism, not actual skill or experience. They then show favoritism to the staff that they manage. Management and HR don't treat staff like human beings with real lives and struggles outside of work and when I communicated with them about accommodations I was needing, they just fired me instead of accommodating my disability.
Workplace culture at my clinic specifically was great, I loved all of my providers and coworkers, but the workplace culture for the company as a whole is ATTROCIOUS.  Too many CEOs at the top of the company lining their own pockets and then blaming the staff at the bottom of the pyramid, as if our pennies are the reason the company is in millions of dollars of debt, not the CEOs funneling money from the "not for profit" company. 
Hardest part of the job was the sheer volume of patients to staff and not having enough staff to effectively run a Primary Care clinic. Also not having accommodations for my disabilities met so that I was able to do my job more effectively. 
Do NOT work here. I threw away over 5 years of my life for this company and in the end was treated like garbage anyway, loyalty really truly means nothing to them. You aren't a human to them, you are expendable and replaceable. I'd rather work somewhere where they care about staff wellbeing as humans, not robots. 

I worked for this company almost 15 years and the last 10 years were the most stressful and miserable days of my life. These people do not care about their employees or the patients at all. The only thing they care about is money. I cared very much about my patients and was very vocal about it and was treated so poorly by upper management and corporate management that it became a very toxic workplace environment to work in and they pushed me out to shut me up. I also watched them push out so many amazing doctors who truly cared about their patients all because they didn’t see a patient “every 5 minutes”so they weren’t bringing in the money these greedy people thought they should. I would absolutely not ever recommend working for this company! They don’t care about you or the patients and they sure don’t live up to the “PRIDE” statement they are always preaching to everyone which is…. “As Samaritans, we are all expected to do our jobs with PRIDE — passion, respect, integrity, dedication and excellence”. 
They don’t live by the statement they so passionately speak of. 
I would never work again for this company and would never recommend anyone else does either. And it wouldn’t allow me to leave no stars for my ratings but all of them are less than 1 except the benefits.

SHS has made many structural changes in recent years resulting in numerous layers of overpaid and under qualified management. The people making operational decisions are several layers above providers and far removed from understanding the implications of the changes they are making. They hire under qualified medical directors with little experience who are eager to please their superiors and agree with decisions that are harmful to patients and staffs mental health and well-being. These “puppet medical directors” are pushing high productivity expectations, lots of new metrics to meet, and are micro managing workflow. I have seen a major exodus of experienced, quality healthcare providers in recent years and management seems happy to replace them with green providers that they pay less and micromanage more. They are using medical students to provide healthcare at a reduced expense to the system and to farm new physicians for new hires at a much cheaper rate than providers with years of experience. The quality and outcomes of their services are suffering which is very saddening. They seem to prioritize putting money into marketing, facilities, and the C suites huge salaries, while putting the burden of keeping the company financially stable on the backs of its providers. 

Enjoyed the work and tasks given to me but I felt as though I was the grunt, not appreciated or given a chance to give my all. Performing my job tasks weren't hard and I enjoyed every job duty given but it seemed everyone else in the office were allowed to make daily mistakes but if I were to make any then I was the one looked down apon or reprimanded. Its hard to fit into an office where everyone is so close and you are new, then also be judged for trying to learn, do your best to please but never told anything positive at all even though you knew you had many reasons to be given it. I feel if there were more positive words of encouragement, it could make all the difference in the way a new employee can perform without feeling they have to make sure they are doing it correctly. Feeling appreciated can go a long ways, feeling as though you are just there too work, do whatever is told to you and not sure of your place is a sure recipe for disaster. I would hope most departments even though the employees are close and been together for many years would learn to open up to New people and give them a better chance and understanding than I was given.

During my 16-year tenure, I have had the opportunity to directly impact the health of my community, even though I am not in a clinical position. The culture has helped me grow in the areas of social media, equity and inclusion, leadership, fundraising, project management, and community relations. Training is available and I am limited only by my own creativity and willingness to stretch. Leadership respects my ideas and opinions and I have been able to help shape our department in ways that meet the needs of our community, patients and employees. While we have challenging goals, we also have great leadership and team support to help meet those goals. I could not ask for a better employer. I come to work everyday knowing that what I do matters and that my colleagues and leadership have my back and appreciate my contributions. 

I've worked for Samaritan Health Services for 11 years in different roles. Over the past few years the organization has committed to revitalizing a strong culture and I'm proud to continue to work for this organization. They have made a shift to developing leaders within the organization which shows a clear understanding of how a company should continue to mature and succeed. The culture of the organization has shined over the past few years in regards to how employees have pulled together to help us work through a worldwide pandemic. 

A typical day at work in the RBO involves working at a computer/work station, communicating with coworkers, clinic and hospital staff, and sometimes patients and outside organizations depending on the job.

The mission values statement is P.R.I.D.E, Passion Respect Integrity Dedication Excellence. Many staff members exhibit these qualities but the same is not true for management and leadership, especially in the regional business office. Employees are often undervalued and mistreated. All departments of the RBO are working horribly understaffed but are expected to still meet and exceed goals. Leadership claims to value transparency but none of the staff have any security in what is happening with company issues, planning, or current events that have a large impact on jobs.

I've never experienced worse management in a workplace. Highly unprofessional, selfish, unsupportive, and unorganized. If you are skilled at what you do and have helpful insight,this is not the place for you. There is no leadership here, only management. You are not appreciated as an employee and your needs are not taken into consideration. Lack of staffing for the workload is also a major issue throughout this hospital. The expectations of management didn't match the work volume. Since employed there, there was a 22% increase in volume, but they refused to higher staffing to accomadate the increasing workload and expected the same results. The overall culture of Samaritan is unfriendly and toxic. The only thing I can say is that the pay is decent and the employees(excluding management) are a joy to work with. The cons far outweigh the pros, so please don't subject yourself to this kind of toxic environment, even if the pay seems enticing.

The only major benefit at Samaritan is being able to work mostly remote. Samaritan Health Plans lack the will to hold staff accountable in any meaningful or consistent way to motivate change. I will say that most of the staff are well-intentioned just some entrenched toxic behaviors that have festered over time and thus have become a part of the institutional culture needs to be addressed and removed. They do not offer a competitive wage - they are a rural health system, so the dollars are meager. The lack of institutional processes in writing make it difficult for new hires and staff alike . A task or project that should only take a day turns into a week-long fact-finding mission. I would not recommend as an employer.
