You are working for one of the best credit unions; not only in the state of California, but in the nation. They will train you a lot, frequently and well. You work with a lot of people who are kind and friendly for the most part. The only difficult part about the job, is that management can be known to favor certain employees and let them slide more on certain things. The job, itself, is relatively easy once you get it down, but there is consistent information being sent to you on a daily basis via email. The constant new updates/info can make it difficult to stay on track as It is rather hard to remember all of the newer information. Then again, newer information typically means we are growing more as a company, which is a good thing.

The credit union generally cares about its employees. Do take advantage of HR and their resources. Do not be afraid to speak up.

The major disadvantage of working for a credit union in general is the pay. You must not expect to make as much as you would at a bank. Because credit unions are not for profit, they simply to not obtain the monetary means to pay employees more. Even if they do, I don't see it happening anytime soon.

The members of the credit union are generally kind and easy to get along with. You must enjoy working with people and do so well. You must be able to handle stress and not take things personally.

It truly is a great starting job for nearly anyone. Working at a financial institution will provide many transferable traits: teamwork, customer service, cash handling, problem solving skills, etc.

If you work for the credit union, do so with morale and ethics.

One last thing: You must be detail oriented.

From the start I knew I was not going to last here because they use odd tactics to get you. For example, the CEO “welcome” video. I felt nothing but welcomed when she basically stated to be extraordinary or else work for their competitors… They also tell you “assume no privacy”… at all! It’s true. They will know your every move (emails, chats, verbal conversations). Oh, they also started to hire literally anyone for management. I saw managers put up with members as if they were not working as managers; rude, disrespectful, and abusing their power. You definitely need to have friends around departments to get by or grow within the company. With all of the overtime, sales pay, closed pay, etc. I was making about $27 an hour as a banker BUT with all of the benefits and taxes I would take home about $18 an hour. Their tuition reimbursement is very biased, which is sad because I saw them pay for my colleague’s tuition for majors obviously not related to finance and said coworkers left right after to work for a job related to their major. Yet, those who kept loyal to the company got nothing. Some people working at operations can be very mean and useless to those in-branch and dealing with members. 
I made great friends working there but we all agreed on the following: too much work, little support and pay. Their sales goals are ridiculous and can terminate your employment if not met. If you decide to work here I would suggest either being a teller or member of management, or something with little to no sales. Otherwise, stay within admin BUT NOT the call center. Good luck!

SDCCU USED to be A GREAT place to work. The culture WAS fantastic, like a family atmosphere. With new upper management in place, it is a nightmare. Longevity and "life's work" is no longer important. Family is not valued anymore by certain depts. and you are nothing but replaceable. They do not appreciate or recognize staff like they used to and its very discouraging. They keep making cuts on incentives and therefore employees are not motivated to sell....the slogan is "Its not big banking, it's better"...however, internal operations are ran JUST like a big banks. There are many staff on leave or have left due to the stress of the work environment. 
In the new hire orientations, you are told: "If you don't want to be here and this isn't for you, then leave. Don't let the door hit you on the way out". 
SDCCU has been voted the Best Place to Work for the past few years...yet none of the internal staff understand how we win this since no one is voting....they are leaving. The turnover is due to bad management, low pay (unless you are an executive) and stressful work conditions. They do not really give out annual raises with your review. Their formula provides you with approx. $0.25 increase or nothing at all. They spend hundreds of thousands of dollars every year, yet fail to recognize the staff that helped them become #1. Definitely talk to some former staff before you choose to work here.

You start the job by having two weeks of training that you have to take and then at the end of it you take a test and if you fail the test you're either fired or required to take the training again.

Then you were placed in the branch and required to get right to it. Location I was at management was very passive aggressive and caused a lot of stress. Luckily every one of the members Representatives was a very chill person and very helpful. I feel like I got more help from the people sitting next to me than I did it from any of the people in charge of me. It felt like the upper management we're trying to get us to compete with each other but luckily the people I worked with were pretty chill and then play that game. But I've heard other branches had a very toxic environment because of that. Then at the end of every shift we have a group meeting with all the members to talk about everything we did that day. It felt very uncomfortable especially for a new person who is still getting their bearings because I clearly wasn't accomplishing as much as the more seasoned veterans. It felt like those meeting for mostly just a shame people into doing better. Overall it was an okay job but I would never go back. The day I left literally led to so much anxiety leaving my body.

I have been working here 3 months as a call center representative and went through almost 2 months of training for the position. I have no banking experience and this job is extremely stressful. Training does not cover nearly as much as you need you will constantly be calling supervisor line for help and most of the time they don’t seem like they want to help you or give you an incorrect answer. You are also expected to train yourself I guess using resources. They don’t prepare you enough for what you actually do it’s extremely overwhelming. You are also micromanaged and all they care about is keeping your hold time down even if it impacts the member experience. They offer good pay and benefits but at what cost? They have high turnover rate and fire people like nothing. Nearly my whole training group is fired. Sdccu is big on Acknowledge Empathize and Reassure to extend to members but don’t extend that to their own employees. You are disposable here, another butt in a chair.

You have to work every other Saturday no OT as you will be switching shifts only


I initially chose to work for this company thinking credit unions were a good place to work as they are supposedly different from big banks. I quickly found out that this credit union only cared about growth and completely neglected the member's needs. Every branch had a different set of rules which made it difficult for members when bringing up concerns. The lack of consistent expectations that varied from branch to branch made members upset. Also, another key point is the lack of information provided to members about certain products just to get a sale was definitely concerning. Members would come back in month after month questioning unknown charges on their loans, accounts, etc. Management would also "coach" you into giving less information in order to make a sale. In my eyes, that is not coaching but more like silencing. Branch managers were only concerned with monthly goals as they would receive a bonus if achieved. Morning meetings were not inclusive of those not making their sales. Recognition only occurred when making sales and ignored when providing excellent customer service. 

Hands down the best employer I've had. Initial training program was wonderful. The branch management was the reason I've been here for a year. They're wonderfully supportive in day to day operations and support your growth and future opportunities. Team I work with is amazing as well. I was promoted after 6 months and enjoyed a 25% pay increase. 
In the last few months though, a lot of differentiation factors that seprate this place from other banks are no longer offered so it is getting hard to push new account to people. Most bankers in my rank have no been able to meet their quotas for many months and its because the branch goals are based on the numbers and demand in 2019. Which is unrealistic as COVID changed everything and people don't typically walk into branches to open accounts. Most people do it online. However, even without meeting my goals, I don't have job insecurity as management also understands this. It is hard to go up from here though because we would need to meet our goals. a lot of Personal bankers get stuck in their rank for a year or two.

Temporary employees are treated like outsiders and made to wear a bright orange lanyard so that everyone knows that they are a temp. It is very degrading.

The administrative office is full of wonderful employees who are so stressed out from management pressure and short staffing that they spend their day utterly miserable. It is very unfortunate and honestly very hard to watch happen to these good, smart, hardworking people.

The company is focused on making more money, growing, and adding new branches but they don't hire more people to help compensate for the growth. In fact, they seem to be getting rid of people and not re-hiring so that the employee base is actually shrinking while the work and pressure are growing. Just not a healthy environment to work in.

Like most other institutions, there are sales goals to be met monthly. Management favors certain employees and will let them get away with murder. If you want to succeed, became the Branch pet. Good luck getting weekends off when they allow the favored one to take all the time off they want and put your advanced request on the back burner. HR doesn’t back their employees like they do their branch managers even when the manager is unethical and many points have been proven. Their motto is “it’s not big bank banking, it’s better” which is a not true. They are turning in to a big bank with the worst online/mobile banking. Management hovers over you while you’re on the phone with a member or will even sit a member down with you if you’re on the phone. Very unprofessional in my opinion. They claim “member first” behaviors, but don’t have that mentality at all times. 

Management is horrible, not really wanting to help employees, let alone the members. Not enough employees so queues very high with upset members spending more time complaining about the hold times. Online banking has NEVER worked properly and they expect goals to be obtained with unreasonable expectations. No way for vacation time to be scheduled, because there are never enough employees to cover while you're away. Run.

Oh, and they train you for two week on how to be a teller, when your position is a customer support specialist on the phones. You will know how to detect fake money and process check deposits more than how to handle member requests over the phone.
