I will start off by saying that I'm sure a lot of the environment has to do with my manager and my clinic. I am lucky to have stepped into a position in an established clinic where the providers are familiar with the role and what I do. My manager is amazing. I can't speak for other clinics or managers. What I can say, is that Shields is a great opportunity for me to use my skills and experience in pharmacy in a non-retail setting. I still work with patients, but it's an entirely different experience now. I feel like I'm actually doing something and making a difference for the patients. It can be stressful at times, because every day is different and sometimes things come up that need to be handled immediately. It can throw off your entire "plan" for how you think your day will go. It's a good stress though, because at the end of the day I feel like I've accomplished something. No job is perfect, there will be good days and bad days. There are far more good days than bad. This is also the first place I've ever worked where I truly believe them when they say family comes first. I had a family emergency come up and I have had to miss work for an entire week. Not once did I feel like I was putting anyone out or that my job was in danger. They were amazing and told me to take care of my family and my job would be here when I got back. No company has EVER made me feel like they understand there's life outside of work before. This company has given me everything I need to make sure I can do my job to the best of my ability. If I reach out for help, I get it. It has made a huge difference in my life overall to have a job that I truly love. Even my husband says that I'm almost a different person now and he can tell I'm much happier. I just wish I had known about Shields years before!

Shields is a good place to start if you want experience outside of retail or inpatient settings. Specialty pharmacy has had a huge wave of need in the past couple of years and Shields is doing good job accommodating that need with stretch across the nation. A good fit if you desire to start and move up and potentially relocate to a client hospital's city. All great points if you're needing the experience. 

A lot of reviews here state great pay and it is if you're coming right of retail or inpatient. However, if you're experienced in specialty pharmacy, the pay may seem lackluster. 

Pros:
1. medical benefits are covered by the company - yay!
2. CEO is super involved and very kind to all employees.
3. work/life balance is achievable since most roles are based in clinic settings (liaison positions only)
4. Liaisons have support from the Stoughton office for prior authorizations  amongst other things
5. Good work is noticed and acknowledged in a number of ways. 
6. without experience - pay rate is better than retail or inpatient settings

Cons: 
1. if based in Stoughton - work/life balance can be bit harder to achieve when covering West Coast hospitals/clinics (shifts are a bit later in the day). This may be a perk to some though!
2. workload can get a bit hectic due to new client contracts being implemented fairly quickly.
3. pretty far from metro Boston if you live in the area - commuter rail is somewhat an option. I believe some are shuttled from Quincy if you live more inbound towards Boston.
4. low pay to experienced employees *key word - EXPERIENCED*

I started off at Shields not really knowing what to expect. The work we do is unlike anything I have ever done before but I was up for the challenge. Admittedly, I came in overly confident and accustomed to subpar work cultures that were not inline with that of Shields and as a result, I ran into my fair share of self inflicted bumps and bruises. Shields boasts a culture of KINDNESS and they stand firm in that culture. I wasn’t used to an employer who not only talked the talk but walked the walk. There were times where I could have lost my job and if I were employed with any other employer, I would have but Shields gave me the support and resources I needed in order to be successful and climb up the ladder despite my previous mistakes. They have molded me to
become not only the best professional version of myself, but the best personal version of me through that culture of kindness. The things I have learned since being employed with Shields are invaluable. I love what I do, the people I work with and all of the thousands of patients I’ve gotten to help because of the all of the positive support and grace Shields has provided me. I know what I do makes a difference every day because it’s reflected in the level of appreciation the company shows on a consistent basis. There’s no better place to work than Shields! 

You're probably reading this review because you're like me and you've been in the pharmacy technician industry for quite some time, theres nothing better out there other than customer service jobs, retail pharmacy, insurance, and hospital work...This may seem different, which it is, and you will learn a ton! But this is a very corporate role, sit at your desk role, and there is a lot of rules, documentation, policies you must follow. Its not for everyone, and when I thought I was doing well... they let me go due to my numbers not meeting "their standards." I was completing ALL MY WORK, but it wasn't enough. Whereas others were struggling to keep up... But in my 2 years of employment, people came and went, people whom were new and inexperienced (new manager, trainers) suddenly telling me what not/what to do, there was contradictory information past around, excessive supervision with 2-3 meetings per week, they only see the worse in you and not the best that you can offer... a lot of favoritism is involved, unfortunately for me I was not very social. There's nothing confusing about the work itself, the mission is there. But the communication between the hospital, doctors, nurses, secretaries, b/t insurance and pharmacy can get disorganized and hectic. This job has many hats and it may or may not be for you, but tread carefully.  

Work-life balance
If you are an exempt employee and the intention is for you to be on-call and flexible, you will still be likely to not have a flexible schedule.

Pay & benefits
Pay and benefits are lackluster for the amount that you are responsible for. LOTS of vacation time is the plus

Job security and advancement
It doesn't matter how good at your job you are, if the clinic is resistant then you become the scapegoat.

Management
Management is the great thing about this company. Your direct boss will be wonderful because they have previously performed in your role. Since Jack stepped down as CEO, company culture has changed for the worse.

Culture
My position started with a lot of autonomy, but I am now being micromanaged daily due to no fault of my own. Again, no matter how well you perform- if the clinic is resistant, you are at fault.

Overall
You could have an amazing experience at this company if you get placed in a receptive clinic. Work is challenging, fast-paced and enjoyable. The farther up the chain of command you have to deal with though, the less you feel the company culture of kindness. Things within the culture feel like they are starting to shift negatively since many upper management changes.

Communication between the managers and the clinic is none existent which does not help newcomers. The coworkers in my department has been nothing but drama. The culture is to climb over one another. The environment is not one where you encourage each other, unless you're in a clique, overall it just starts needless drama.  My first introduction to the team was just pure gossip. The work/life balance can be horrid or really good depending on your clinic. While I am grateful and blessed to have a wonderful company I do think that they should investigate the east coast managers especially the ones in MedStar. They have a bias that is unannounced. Even though we all have the same job title, Pharmacy Liaison, there are some that act like they have the right to dictate what other people should or should not do. The actually managers just listens in. If asked the question "should I apply or join Shields?" My answer would be, shockingly, yes!  This company is a wonderful company. But if you see a posting for Washington, D.C for MedStar, avoid at all cost! I say try the remote positions that they offer so you can avoid the chaos if you live in D.C or be a National Pharmacy Liaison because you get to travel. 

Overall, Shields Health Solutions offers valuable experience in specialty pharmacy and patient care coordination, especially for those interested in healthcare operations and communication skills. The work can feel meaningful because you are helping patients navigate medications, insurance issues, and treatment access.

The team environment can be supportive depending on the site and management structure, and there are opportunities to learn a lot about specialty pharmacy workflows and real-world patient interactions.

However, the workload can become stressful at times due to high patient volume, metrics, and fast-paced expectations. Communication and organization between departments can occasionally be inconsistent, which may create frustration during busy periods. Work-life balance and staffing can also vary depending on the location and team.

Overall, it is a decent place to gain healthcare experience and build professional skills, but there are definitely areas that could be improved operationally.

Originally I loved working for Shields, the commute was easy, office setting was relax and the mission was patient care. However as management begin to shift and positions changed, I begin to realize how corrupt the company has become. Day to day tasks were nearly impossible to complete and expectation were so high, work life balance was impossible. Supervisors and some leads did not have the experience or skillset to advise, often these roles were filled based off favoritism and bribes. Employees are not praised for their hard work and instead are demanded for better numbers and faster approval time; as if they were disposable and easily replaced. Prejudice and racism was mostly ignored and sometimes condoned. While on the other side, I would say this company definitely opened my options as a pharamacy technician to expand to hospital and clinical settings. Overall, Shields is a stepping stone for somewhere better but would not consider this company as a long term career.

Shields Health has the potential to be a great company but unfortunately, is plagued by inefficient, unresourceful management.  Initially, you're given all this "support" and "kudos" just for showing up.  Eventually, the support will dwindle as they stretch you thinner and thinner and you'll constantly be challenged to do more with little recognition for your contributions.  Luckily, this is a great place for work/life balance with decent PTO so you can escape from the chaos every now and then.  The work isn't hard and you're able to help patients who really need it.

Pay is competitive but the insurance options are terrible so if you are of poor health or have a bunch of kids, please be aware that you will have a copay for everything... 
Also, no tuition reimbursement so consider that. 

I don't know how the company operates in other regions but this is my experience working for the DC/MD/VA team. 

Shields is one of the most welcoming and inclusive work environments I have ever been a part of.
