Skyline Chili

A typical day at work would involve me getting to work right away, serving my tables, cleaning as I go, and doing food prep and detail cleaning at the end of my shift. Ensuring customer satisfaction was a huge part of my job by making sure all of my table's needs were met with anything they needed such as running hot food to the table on time, putting bibs on people, building relationships with them so they want to come back, not only for the food but to see me, and a overall experience that highlights their day. 
     This job was my first serving experience which allowed me to learn so much about the food industry and people in general. I learned about patience, hard work when no one was looking, determination, prioritizing, organization, problem solving, visualizing an overall end result, team work, and using my creative mind to make new ideas to benefit the company. 
     The managers really believed in me and pushed me to become not only a better server, but how to be a more successful human being. They taught me that being ten minutes early was being on time, being ready for a shift included eating before hand, having my uniform tucked in, clean, with a name tag, my apron tied on, hair pulled back, and with a smile on my face. They also taught me to leave my everyday, life drama at the doors and that team work makes the dream work! All the managers we ever had really loved what they were doing, constantly were striving to be better people and to move up in the chain. This really motivated me to want to do the same. They allowed me to be trained on every position so I could pick up any shift that was needed. They all really had confidence in me by hiring me as someone with no serving experience, let alone not knowing what the job was, to training me to train new servers; I proved to them I could do it. 
     My other co-workers were phenomenal and also hardworking. They took their jobs seriously but also had a lot of fun too. We all worked as a team and pushed each other to be better. When someone needed a shift covered, we would all switch our schedules to help that person out. This was by far my favorite team to work with.
     The hardest part of my job was keeping calm under stressful situations. The store would get extremely busy and in order to succeed you had to keep a positive outlook and keep your cool, otherwise you would get "weeded" and not be able to serve your tables properly. The way I did this was to keep an open mind and to talk to the other servers. You can't be afraid to ask for help when needed. I learned that this goes for everything in life. You can't do everything alone and always need support and help from those close to you and I considered my Skyline team to be those people. 
     The most enjoyable part of my job was talking to the customers and up-selling new products. I loved when I had a connection with a customer and seeing them walk through the doors of the store, and having their drink on the table and food on the way for them before they even sit down. Talking to strangers and making relationships is a hard task to accomplish but I feel as if I have conquered it over the years. It is the best feeling when you make that connection with someone and then they come back just to see you. It is also a good feeling to up-sell products especially if you are passionate about them. I loved my job and the food so I would try the new food we got and up-sell it to the best of my ability.

To tell the truth I loved working at Skyline Chili. It was a decent place that was regularly busy. The work wasn't anything ridiculous and there was plenty of things to do to keep someone busy. The problems I had dealt with some employees and mainly management. The Moraine, OH store is bad, the owner runs everything. The managers are just higher paying employees that deal with whatever the owner did not want to do. He hired nothing but high school kids, mostly girls, and that didn't work at all. There were a bunch of people that didn't do work causing the rest of the team to make up for it. If someone well qualified applied to the store they would usually get beat out by an attractive girl who wouldn't want to actually work, it was a mess. Then there is also the problem of advancement. I had worked there for almost six years, and I was one of the hardest workers around, but when it came time that we needed a new manager the owner would pick a random person and try to promote them. This lead to many managers being very inexperienced and leaving me to fix their problems. Also good luck getting a raise. In the first four years I received about a total of $0.35 raise and had to practically fight for a raise after working with them for five years. Overall I enjoyed my time there and I would probably still be there today if it weren't for the poor ownership. I'm only saying this about the Skyline Chili in Moraine, OH. I'm sure that the others function like an actual place of work.

Skyline Chili is such a great place with a dedicated work staff and a variety of different things you could do! You learn the background, history, and many things that make people love Skyline, and if you had an amazing staff as I did, you will grow to love it. With all the upsides to a great work job, you might ask yourself... then what's wrong with it? It's everything else that you begin to dislike. You hate that you are constantly stuck in the same spot, and you want to do other things but because you became so "good" at this one job, that's all you do. You look around and realize that you and two other people are the only trained ones on the team, because everyone else got stopped before their training was finished, and you start to question why this person only knows how to do ways, and this person is only trained on coneys, and why this person only washes dishes when there is no dishwasher position. You start to realize that even though in the beginning you were happy and excited about all of the raises and those things they said they were going to give you for all your hard work and dedication, you got none of it. You start to realize that all the people complimenting you, telling you how nice and sweet you are and how you are the nicest fast food person they've come across in a WHILE, you start to realize that if you were as great as everyone said, then why are you still stuck in the same spot?

Typical Day
1. Manager on Duty must clock you in. System does not all self click-ins for non-management.
2. Set up your station. Make sure you are stocked with enough supplies to make it through your shift.
3. Safety and Security. Make sure all food is at proper temperatures and not cross contaminated. Make sure that proper procedures are followed to ensure the safety of bot guests and coworkers. 
4. I have learned how to provide excellent customer service as well as how to cook, prepare, and FIFO to ensure highest quality experience.
5. Management for the most part are extremely chill. In my experience though at my particular store there have been a couple managers over the years who like to stir the pot. They usually don't stick around longer than a couple years.
6. Workplace Culture is fairly lighthearted. Skyline believes in dou g your best to cast a positive shadow. We joke around alot with each other and for the most part try to improve each other's days.
7. Hardest part of the job is just the initial training  process. Skyline has a very particular way they want things to be done and can be challenging at times to adhere to.

I've been here for over a year, and got a lot out of it for a while. I've had enough of the disrespect and condescension from day shift and management. Some people who are lazy or don't know what they're doing are paid more and go undisciplined. Management's idea of discipline and training is to leave passive aggressive notes all over the store. Instead of communicating properly with staff, they prefer to gossip and do childish "write-ups" that don't actually lead to or mean anything. We have a lot of new tedious policies that just create more needless work, like preparing a stupidly specific amount of cheese bags. They're penny-pinching now too, so we can't take any food home at the end of the night (even though we throw a lot of it away). I wouldn't mind going along with these so much if they were just respectful about it. Instead, there are notes saying it's our fault these policies exist because we're all lazy and dumb. I've given nothing but hardwork, love, and respect to all the people who've come through that place. I get very little of it back. What used to be a fun/easy job is now an unnecessarily miserable environment. Plenty of managers who've been there for decades and need to be fired.

Working at Skyline Chili was a pretty solid experience overall, especially if you’re someone who enjoys a fast-paced environment and being part of a tight-knit team. The atmosphere tends to be upbeat and energetic, and coworkers often feel more like friends than just colleagues, which makes even the busiest shifts more manageable.

One of the biggest positives is how quickly you learn. Whether it’s mastering the menu (which has its own unique style compared to other restaurants) or getting efficient during rushes, you definitely build strong multitasking and customer service skills. Management can vary by location, but at its best, it’s supportive and willing to work with your schedule, which is a big plus if you’re balancing school or another job.

That said, it’s not without its challenges. The pace can get intense during peak hours, and you’re on your feet most of the shift. It can also take some time to adjust to the expectations, especially when it comes to speed and accuracy.

Overall, Skyline Chili is a good place to work if you’re looking to gain experience in the food industry, make friends, and don’t mind a little hustle. It’s not always easy, but it can definitely be rewarding.

A typical day at work was coming into a friendly atmosphere with coworkers who wanted to be there just as much as I did. We always ended the day as strong as we started it, had minimal complaints, and plenty of compliments. I learned at Skyline that there are restaurants that value customer service more than anything, Skyline is definitely that restaurant. My coworkers and I always got along. there were never any quarrels, we all worked together as a team because we all knew what was most important, the customers. Management was sketchy at times, but only with a select few, after they were taken care of, management was delightful, kept the workplace in order, but never harsh or unfriendly. The hardest part of the job was dealing with harsh customers at first. Of course there is no pleasing everyone, but after a while I learned to just keep calm, and point them in the right direction, which was to the managers. The best part of the job was the happy customers. It was great to meet new people everyday and put smiles on their faces.

I worked at skyline for about a year, always lots of fun people to work with and a well balanced team. The perks are we never got terribly busy, there were days that we were busy but it’s nothing compared to some of the larger fast food chains like McDonalds. The pay was great when I first started but after Covid while other places were increasing their pay to get more workers, skyline did not meet their competitions pay. This was ultimately what led me to leave. It’s a fun environment to work in and the food isn’t difficult to make. The management was well structured and after just 6 months of working there I became a shift manager. Lots of opportunities to grow and they’re generally lenient with scheduling, as lots of high schoolers and band kids worked with us. The shifts can be anywhere between 4-10 hours but you decide your schedule. We had lots of problems with people calling off because of little discipline for not coming in, but I believe after I left the attendance got a little bit stricter. 

My work at Skyline was the basis for my future. I learned how to interact with coworkers, whether they were younger or older than I was, as well as afforded me the opportunity to be in both the younger and older individual situations for the job. Being in the younger situation allowed me to absorb the knowledge and wisdom of the older, more experienced individuals, while being older set me up for the TA position that I eventually obtained. A typical day included showing up 15 minutes early to clock in and get ready for the shift, head out to the dining room, then make and give out the orders that were produced. When I became a manager, I learned how to interact with customers on a different level. By being the authority figure on any shift I managed, I had to find ways to appease the customers when my employees didn't complete an order correctly. Dealing with angry individuals is a great way to learn about the real world and dissolve tense situations.

I worked there for 2 years. As a production employee and as a server. I can tell you this place screwed me in more ways than I care to count. We had a new manager at least every 5 months. Everything would constantly change, there was no structure. I was told I would be a full time server and a month later I was told that that was never going to happen so I put my 2 weeks in. When I did that they had the audacity to take my serving shifts away, which was right before Christmas. So they screwed me out of at least 300 dollars. You get no reward ever. No "thank you's" for anything ever. If you sit down for 5 minutes to take a break they yell at you. The employees who hardly work or do the bare minimum get all the credit while the full timers get screwed. Don't even think of working here during the school year. We had 3 people everyday doing the job of 6 people. Very understaffed and it made everything a lot worse. I worked there for 2 years and got a 20 cent raise the entire time I was there. This is just an awful place to work. Save yourself the trouble. I wish I would have.
