Working at Slomin’s Shield as a telemarketer allowed me to enhance my communication skills. I was given a quota to meet each week. Each denial gave me a reason to improve my communication skills with customers. Once I started getting leads, I continued to improve the craft of communication by listening and getting tips from the other employees.

A typical day at Slomin's Shield would include me receiving a list of 150 contact numbers. I would have to call every contact and try to set up an appointment/lead with them to meet with our field sales representative. The field sales representative would then try and sell the prospective customer home heating oil or a home alarm system. If the sales representative sells one of the services, I would get commission from that sale. My goal was to get at least 3 leads a day.

I learned how to build upon the craft of communication. I altered the way I communicate via phone so I could sound more convincing and promising. My co-workers and management did not help me. I had to learn on my own. I paid attention to how the manager and other co-workers get appointments.

The hardest part of the job was to alter the sales pitch. The sales pitch that was given to me initially was a generic and boring sales pitch. With time and diligence, I created a sales pitch that works for me and it made it easier for me to get leads.

The most enjoyable part of the job is to make an appointment. It is rare that a person stays on the phone and listens to what I have to say without hanging up or yelling at me. I was shocked each time I made an appointment with a prospective customer. The shock was enjoying to me because I was getting the job done.

I was hired as customer service in call center, always cold in the office, some workers kept their coats on for the whole shift. I was trained for hvac calls and alarm calls. New systems cameras were being installed after I had been trained, so we had one class on the new camera systems, which were supposed to be operated from client cell phone. The training wasn't thorough, and the clients were sold beyond their technical skill, some couldn't even use their smart phones but the salesperson and the techs installing their cameras would drop the ball and leave customer service to fill the gap. The products didn't work well and the whole endeavor was poorly organized. The benefits were minimal, in lieu of top health or dental the managers/owners would buy high fat fast food lunches periodically. Senior workers did and said whatever they wanted on customer calls, but new workers were monitored and recorded on calls and torn apart for any mistakes. One of the workers listening in on calls was one of the rudest customer service rep's I've ever encountered.  Management watched employees everywhere and showed no trust so in return they received no loyalty and lots of high turnover. The parking was a mess and I had so many flat tires from running over debris. The place was rarely cleaned, and workers had breathing problems due to dirty vents and filthy carpets. A place that makes as much money as this one should hire a decent cleaning company.

I loved my co-workers and enjoyed my hours, but that's where it ends. Managment and supervisors play favorites. They once a year do a firing spree until we are understaffed and have to work 3x as hard. They only care about you if your family otherwise they could give 2 s---s. Forget about raises and advancement. You have to beg for a raise. There are some ways to make extra money from time-time but even that you need to watch to make sure they don't rip you off on. You earn time weekly to use to pay yourself for sick and vacation days (which you have to pray you get only 1 person per shift can have off). There are some overtime opportunities in the winter if you aren't too burnt out to take advantage of. Bssically if you're not fake and a brown nose you will get very little and that you have to fight for. 
The place is a cesspool and everyones too busy including supervisors fooling around with everyone to care. Besides all that my biggest gripe is they do not give you the tools to do your job but expect you to exceede expectations anyway.

I enjoyed working for Slomins Shield as a out door Sales Rep. I learned a lot about sales and leadership. On a daily basis I met with my team and manger to work out a plan to meet sales quotas and to review existing contracts and improve sales techniques. 

The management team was upbeat and we worked together as a family as well as team. We spent over 40 hours a week driving together in a van and became very close. Everyone helped each other and respected our differences. We had weekly lunches were we would spend time at work getting to know one another and build office moral.

The hardest part of my job would have to be the extreme climate conditions. My position required me to work mostly out doors, which meant working in the summer heat, the rain and winter storms. At the same time that was one of my favorite aspects of working at Slomins. I got a chance to feel the wind and smell the fresh flowers and the sun everyday. 

I also like the freedom of working alone and working with a team. I closed deals alone but always returned to my to team to map out areas and brainstorm strategies to create new sales campaigns.

In my time at Slomins I was one of the best selling reps in the company. Within a few months of being a sales rep i was offered the role of team lead,( a field sales manager ) to run the day to day office and a stipend to make up for not being able to sell being as i was the manager and driving the van. this was about 3 months before the Covid pandemic. After being shut down and laid off for a year i was offered to come back as the team lead in a new office. I accepted and worked about 4 months after the pandemic as the team lead all the while not being paid out on my stipend from before or after the pandemic this along with por communication with upper management and the loss of %80 of the reps in the office, i  to make a hard choice and move on. Now other then this its a true door to door job your outside knocking, the pay is good hours are very long and knocking in the dark/cold/rain/snow is somtimes a reality depending on the time of the year,the team leads will go above and beyond to try an help you in any way possible they truly make it as enjoyable and comfortable as they can.

Day to day, I encounter many different personalities with me either going door to door our at a standalone mall location. I've learned how to approach people and anytime, and getting them to actually hear what i have to offer as a sales man. I try my very best not to be pushy but firm in what I sell, so they will buy. 

  Company's management team is very respectful and have good time management with conducting your needs. Coworkers make the day and time fly by, with good humor and respectful sportsmanship. 

   I believe that hardest part of the job would be, signing up someone who doesn't have a good credit score, and having to find out they have been turned down after building a small relationship with them and having them have such hope for the great offer I signed them up for. 

   The best part of the job is actually signing up those who you know are looking to save tons on oil during the year. Just making them happy in paying less makes me happy as a sales rep.

The job is pretty cool when you come in the door.  But once you're there, watch out for the supervisors and management.  They sit back and complain about every little thing that is out of your control and unfairly point the blame on newcomers who were never told how to do certain things,  But with that aside, you do learn a lot.  On a typical day, these are the skills and duties you can expect to incorporate on a day to day basis:

Safely operating an oil truck from the plant, I load at to each consumers home and or business.
Ensuring that the location I am delivering to has the correct address, type of fill and is safe to deliver to.
Meticulously keeping track of how much oil I load, unload, and carry on board.
Keeping an adequate amount of fluid levels and diesel to safely operate my truck.
Promptly delivering oil to all customers desperately in need of having fuel delivered to their desired locations.


Work day in Central Station can be boring and tedious. There's a lot of own time. It's not for anyone that has to constantly do something.
Management in Central Station has a lot to be desired. The have no idea how to motivate let alone how to speak to they're employees. They're condescending at every level. There are no set list of rules or procedures. One days rule changes from day to day. Morale is very low and no one wants to work there. They are very picky over who they hire and 1 out of every 5 applicants might make it through training. The problem is with the Main Supervisor and his son. They can't stand each other and fight all the time. Then they take it out on the employees. Never a nice word for a good job or catching a big mistake. The place could be incredible but these two make it very hard to recommend it to anyone looking for a job.

sitting at your desk all day taking calls from customers for oil, burner service, hvac service and acct related things such as payments. 

pros : pay is fair, benefits such as medical, dental, 401k. occasional food bagels every Saturday morning. people you work along side of.

con: the company is almost 100 yrs old and still stuck on its old way of thinking. takes forever to get a problem resolved. that can cost us the customer. slomins is just money hungry. they do not care about being transparent and clear w/ customers so they understand what they are getting into with us. they only are after locking in the customer under contract. after they sign, service to the customer becomes our 2nd priority especially when it needs to be for a problem that we were out the for but apparently did not get right or fix it the first time.

My first day on the job i got hurt 3 nails went into my head n i was told to take a 5 minute rest in the back of the box truck n i was bleeding, i throw up n i wasnt given any medical attention at all. Then finally at 7 30 pm when i got off the job my parent brought me to a doctor said i had a very bad concussion n that it was too late for stitches but i was only paid 4 dollars for like a 13 hour day n months later when i was finally back to normal i waited for workers comp to call to say im all cleared to work well thats not with slomins u have to go in the next day n get cleared by ur supervisor n i didnt know so i got fired n wasnt given full pay by worker comp n also missed 2 pay checks too by workers comp
