South Community Behavioral Health Care

I really grew professionally because of off-site educational opportunities provided to me by South Community as well as those I pursued individually.  As with any community mental health agency nationally, maintaining that intense of a caseload while being underpaid for current cost of living made the experience untenable for the long-term.  I had hoped to stay on for 2 years, but was only able to maintain the position for 1 year before needing a change of pace.  Also, similar to other CMH agencies nationally, due to the staffing shortages, some managerial staff are unprepared and my manager was very unprofessional-often crossing personal boundaries and gossiping about other therapists during our individual supervisions.  Ultimately, this contributed to my leaving due to feeling unsupported especially when faced with a difficult communication break down regarding policy for therapist that pitted us against prescribers and vice versa regarding client retention.  The executive team (CEO & COO) are very competent, as well as some among the directorial level, however there is only so much those folks can do given the context.  

Upper management has repeatedly failed to fill and retain key leadership positions as well as provide team support in all programs. The amount of pressure and increased workload on clinical staff is not sustainable and when concerns have been brought up, upper management often doubles down on their position and ignore the adverse effects of their predatory policies. For a mental health agency, they do not prioritize the mental wellness of their employees and provide very little support beyond telling you about the EAP (which offers 6 sessions per calendar year). The pay is allegedly competitive with other community mental health agencies, but upper management makes no effort to retain current employees and blames the lack of cost of living adjustments on the clinical staff underperforming, putting the agency in the red financially. Upper management is not transparent and refuses to acknowledge problems the agency is facing with turnover and wait lists negatively impacting client care. Benefits offered for full-time staff are subpar compared to other similar agencies in the area. There is very little job security in grant-funded programs currently due to many of these issues, as community partners are not satisfied with the services being provided (or not being provided). 

TL;DR upper management has created a hostile work environment and the pay is absolutely not worth the expectations.

My pay and benefits at SOUTH COMMUNITY INC are competitive for someone new, but does not allow for financial advancement as job advancement. People work hard and health care is not affordable with such high deductible and deductions , PTO generous, productivity bonus monthly is generous... and achievable.

Job security and advancement
In terms of job security at SOUTH COMMUNITY INC, I think you do you job, no reason to look to let you go. People stay for the most part.

Management
In general, managers at SOUTH COMMUNITY INC over worked at times in work load exceptions of due dates reviews, spread sheets, financials, new telehealth requirements. But this is the job. Great teams of people, great collaborative efforts weekly. All solid good people.

Culture
Collaboration with my colleagues at SOUTH COMMUNITY INC is had working and amazing. Does YOUR CEO salt the drives at 7 AM to avoid people falling? Good people.

Overall
My experience working at SOUTH COMMUNITY INC excellent. I just would love to see an overall increase in all salaries as I know the work from the bottom up and : compensation + love of work = retention. 
Non profits are the backbones the arms of this community.... they need help, resources.

I have had the honor to work with a great company since 2016. I did 8 years on the ACT team. Then I moved to CIT after getting a promotion. South Community provided me support as I completed two degrees at Wright State University. I completed my Bachelors in child welf and Masters in family and Children Social work and both internships with the support of management at South community. They acknowledge performance while giving us opportunities for promotions. They will provide continuing education opportunities and encourage all employees to grow.
My typical day  is doing follow ups that police connect me with in the community. I will make phone calls and do ride alongs with both stations. I work with both departments through out the week. The hardest part of the job is getting individuals to stay engaged for help we can provide.  The most enjoyable part of the job is helping individuals in the community by providing hope and a positive attitude. 

South Community's employees provide care to a wide age range of clients and populations. I've had the honor of being employed for an organization who has provided many opportunities for professional growth and development through completion of daily duties and consulting with a multidisciplinary team and one-on-one as well as group supervision. Management at South Community is positive and supportive of the employees, providing guidance and support as necessary, even going above and beyond. The workplace culture of South Community is exceptional, which is reflected by the highly advertised core values of caring, compassion, and communication. The hardest part of the job can be potential burnout, which is common for the mental health field, and not due to the organization itself (the company greatly encourages self-care). The most enjoyable part of the job is to share with supervisors positive progress noted with clients and to realize an improvement/enhancement in professional growth/development.

The staff I work with are coming together on a daily basis, especially with management providing more oversight, and direction. It is a good company many choose to stay for many years. In fact, it has made some progress in diversity, as I have noticed more minority represented groups in positions, including in administration, which I did not see 8 years ago. More diversity in management is needed, however, that could be said of most places and this is not meant as a negative remark against the agency. I do know, if there is a 'right fit' for an individual, South will do the best it can to find a position for staff retention. I find this a significant plus for myself as I am changing duties due to a disability, of which, I was accommodated and welcomed. I cannot say about 'all' staff of the entire agency, however, each of the many I have encountered out of about 75 or so, only 3 have been non team players, while everyone else is polite, knowledgeable and seemingly enjoy working. 

South was a decent place to work, flexibility was a plus. Make sure you read the handbook. However this was not a secure job as the position I had was grant funded. 

They never gave me the pto hours I earned when I had left the company, that was due to not putting in 2 weeks. I had gave them a one week notice and apparently that was not a proper notice. However I was a good employee and followed all of the companies policy. 

I disagree with their policy. If you were a good employee and never called off I feel you have earned that time and it should be given to you. 

Higher up was sneaky about certain things and didn't always tell the truth when it was discussed with our grant money. 

This job was not secure as there was numerous times I was told you may or may not have a job. 



This company provides an amazing opportunity to work in the school system.  Environment depends on the school assigned.  Direct supervisors are very caring and supportive.  Upper management at times responds to needs of direct service providers but there is some frustration among front line staff.  Compensation is below the average but paid time off is plentiful.  There are some bonus opportunities to offset this but the compensation is mainly in the form of working at amazing schools w/ wonderful staff and resilient children who never fail to amaze.

This is a good company to get experience in the mental health field. They are committed to helping students  by providing a lot of internship opportunities. They also provide free supervision and training for if you are looking to further your licensure.  The company has great support from supervisors.  The biggest issue with the company is their pay is low and their COL wage increases are based on performance of the entire company rather than actual COL increases related to the economy.   Finally once you have reached your highest licensure you cannot get an increase in wages unless the company offers a COL wage increase that year.  

The staff was extremely helpful throughout my time here. They were very supportive and directed me to whatever additional resources I may have needed to complete my work. They were generally very flexible with scheduling needs. Many opportunities were presented, and the staff was even very encouraging of having me run several psychotherapy groups to help meet client needs. Other mental health professionals also expressed an interest in learning new things and working collaboratively to help enhance client care.
