I arrive to the office before we open the doors or turn the phones on at 8 AM. I work with one physician and one medical assistant 4 out of 5 days a week. I get to work and immediately start preparing for the appointments already scheduled. I pull all vaccine records on every patient. I print any forms/questionnaires each patient will need. I check each room to make sure it is fully stocked. I am also responsible for checking the crash cart and narcotic log twice a day. I bring patients back and greet them at the door. I walk to them to their room and begin to take vital signs. I also take their chief complaint. I review all medical history, medications, pharmacy, and any procedures they will need. I answer any questions they have regarding vaccines/procedures they will need. After the physician has seen them I preform all injections/procedures as directed by the physician. I make sure all questions have been answered and provide any patient education needed before they leave the office. I tell the patient when to expect their lab results to be back. If they are here for a sick visit I always tell them to call back if their condition changes or they have questions/concerns. I also make sure they know when to follow up with the physician and make any appointments if necessary. I call patients throughout the day for several different reasons. I handle triage calls, medication questions, lab results, and follow ups. I direct any questions/concerns I can't answer to the physician and call the patient back once the physician replies. I obtain any lab specimens needed while the patients are in office. I run tests such as complete blood count, urinalysis, urine pregnancy, mono spot, H pylori, stool blood occult, and other tests we are able to do in office. I also assist the physician with any procedures and make sure all the tools necessary for the procedures are ready for the physician. I go through all the physician's mail and faxes. I sort consult notes or other patient material that needs to be scanned to the charts. I also send letters to patients that can't be reached by phone. I result any paperwork the patient completed at their appointment or scan it to their chart. At the end of the day I make sure I have returned all patient calls, all rooms have been disinfected, and check to see if my coworkers need assistance. I have learned a lot about pediatrics and I am able to use this knowledge to provide patient education. I think the hardest part of my job is admitting a patient to the hospital. No parent wants their child to be sick or have to be hospitalized. The best part of my job is when parents thank me for being compassionate or having patience. A lot of parents love it when we call a few days after their child was seen for a sick visit to follow up. They appreciate the time we take to ensure their child is getting better and getting the best medical care we can provide. A lot of times parents just need someone to talk to or reassurance that they are doing the right thing. It's a great feeling knowing that I was able to make someone else's day better.

Being an intern means in this case that I was assumed to know nothing. The management openly corrected me in front of a patient, very unprofessional. There are different specialties housed at this campus and although a majority of the nurses were helpful, there was a sense of being an outsider if you were not part of a specific group of coworkers. I did enjoy the opportunity to meet and be a part of different specialties and did learn a great deal but the overall environment felt cold and unwelcoming.

Externed as medical assistant under the guidence of nurses and medical assistants. Received one on one training in the field and interacted with doctors and patients. Enjoyed coming to work and providing care to patients. A typical day at work started at 8am checking in patients and performing patient work ups, taking vitals and preparing patients to see physician. Other duties included scheduling, answering phones, monitoring the front desk and updating patient charts, also was responsible for cleanliness of exam rooms and assitiing nurses with vaccinations.

This is a satellite office. The physicians are top notch. The job is repetitive but lively because of the patient interaction. The clinical staff (medical assistants) are great at what they do. 

Both the clerical and medical staff are seriously overworked and turnover is ridiculous. The office manager is oblivious and always MIA, but the physicians, co-workers, and patients make it worthwhile.

Some days were long because you worked from the time the first patient came in until the last patient left. Friday’s you left early as not to get overtime. The office could get very busy and the satalite office even more so. You had to learn to work under the pressure and with or without a computer because the doctor I worked for had just joined South Coast and his staff was learning how they did things. It was a good learning experience.

A typical work day at Southcoast Medical group involves a lot of employees who are like family members to one another away from home. I meet and greet patients from all different cultures and backgrounds. Getting to know patients on a more friendlier level as the visit the doctor.I enjoy learning new material and software that the company provides to accommodate the needs and personal information of the patients.

Worked with Southcoast for almost a decade; Management will tell you one thing and then do something else. too bad that the doctors have let a greedy administration drain the profits and push every employee to their limit. The one nice thing about the company is the people that you work with every day. Some of the individual managers are terrific, but as a company, I would say watch your back.

This is a very productive physicians office.  They have just about every specialty physician that anyone could need in one location.  Everyone works as a team and it makes the time go by quickly.  The hardest part of my job was having to turn patients away due to no availability.  The most enjoyable part of my job was the interaction with all patients by phone and occassionally in person.

Management holds the key to implementing and maintaining a productive positive workplace culture in which they often fall short  - the hardest part of the job was knowing there was no room for growth, no continuing education classes. The most enjoyable part of my job was challenging myself daily to complete tasks timely and to maintain above average customer care.

A typical day at work was never the same. I've learned how to challenge different tasks. Organizational skills worked when teamwork was involved. Each day required management skills but was given at an at the wrong time. The most enjoyable part of the job was seeing the smiles on the patients faces when leaving knowing they put there lives in our hands to justify that everything will get well soon.
