It was not what I expected. Right after training in Columbia  my teamwork in Greenville made me feel very unwelcomed and disrespected, especially head teller and CSR. They would not even stop gossiping in front of me and most of times I felt mistreated and harassed. The young head teller would complain for any little thing just to show any service other than gossiping with the other teller all they long, making work stressful, and with NO collaboration. Head teller would complain even if I had questions after training. Rudeness, Not willing to help and encourage me as a coworker. Lack of professionalism and ethic. I have never seen so much of that in a bank. The tellers would send out referrals all day long even if they never had any conversation with the customers about a product or sales as the customers already called and walked in knowing what they wanted and willing to sit with the CSR. I was shocked especially knowing the manager was aware of it. As a float teller I only watched that kind of conduct at the Broad St branch. HR was not there to assist the employee but just to listen and agree with the manager. In other branches in Greenville I met other unpleasant teller very rude and arrogant, as well as an inflexible manager that would not want to hear me. But fortunately also met a few good mature employees.
No raises, no rewards, in a year of work was never recognized for my great job, for making relationship with new and existing customer and all referrals, sales etc but some some tellers would go and complain unfairly for any little thing as immature tellers they are just to try to create a conflict, example the same head teller from downtown branch that would not make any effort in referrals and just send out fake ones just because a customer came to her station already willing to open a new account or get a loan... ridiculous bad conduct, plus experienced CSR would agree with that and close the referral. CSR would also yell at me and mistreat me in some occasions with no penalties... She just apologized me after the manager spoke to her about it but still would not talk to me friendly as with any other coworker.
I felt myself in a heavy and abusive work environment and it was totally awkward. I could not take it no more and would not recommend this job ... My health worths more than anything, especially getting poor paid hours.

A small bank trying to turn into BoA/Wells without the proper back end infrastructure. Just one look at their Mobile App reviews on Google Play and Apple and you can see how the customers feel, now imagine taking that like a punching bag for 8 hours a day. Constant crashes, downtimes, and lacking in even the most basic features you can find from similar level banks. Also they route all their bank lines through the call center(s) which is just baffling.

COVID did NOT help either... Your coworkers were one of the few things helping keep you sane, but because of COVID everything was rushed into Work From Home and when it was safe for everyone to come back in house, most people opted to stay home. You must have thick skin and a calm, collective mind to succeed. If you can stick with it for at least a year then you'll have the luxury of applying for another position.

The pay and benefits are market average, but be warned that your PTO and Sick Time come from the same pool, so you do not want to have to be out sick if you want to take any real vacations.

Flexibility depends on your Manager, but in general it was fair. As long as it wasn't last minute or asking for every major holiday you would generally get your time off approved. In general Management was readily available to assist you.

Overall I believe the company really bit off more than it could chew with its mergers and aquisitons and really need to update their digital platforms by integrating common features from their competitors to ease the stress on their Customer Service members.

I would not recommend working for or banking at South State Bank. Petty squabbles and childish disagreements are rampant in the Compliance Department and elsewhere. There is no sense of teamwork in the office and everyone tries to throw each other "under the bus". Hard work and loyalty are not appreciated nor recognized. There is a growing culture of micro-management and general unhappiness throughout the office and nothing is being done from the top to resolve the issues. Constant clashes between business units prevents anything from being done. Most of the day is wasted on multiple meetings and calls where nothing is accomplished and prevents the employees from getting their actual work done. Some employees are so overworked that they constantly seem to be on the verge of a meltdown, others don't seem to even have a real job and  just show up to chit chat all day, or close themselves off in their offices and pretend to work. After a management change, I was assigned a new supervisor,  who was an extremely unpleasant, paranoid megalomaniac, lacking in basic social skills. The personality disorders and control issues made for an extremely hostile work environment. She apparently has issues with males and has pushed other male subordinates out of their positions in the past. After trying to bring some of these issues to light, said manager spent her days trying to build a case against me (because she had no other real work to do) and used her connections in HR to railroad me out of the position for no cause. Further, the way that HR matters are handled at South State are a complete joke and of questionable legality. I would not even recommend banking here much less working here. Many employees refuse to open South State accounts and for good reason.

I worked for South State a little over a year as a teller. During my time there, I developed some lasting friendships, and I grew as a person. Unfortunately, the pros of this job are far outweighed by the cons. The traffic at the branch I worked at in Toccoa is insane. South State is easily the busiest bank in town. You can expect to be yelled at by customers on a near daily basis for things that are beyond your control. I remember going home at the end of the day, every day, feeling both mentally and physically exhausted. South State, where I worked, was the place that a lot of people in town came to to pay their rent each month. The first and the third of each month were awful. Coming into work, we'd have a line at the door an hour before we opened of people waiting to get in.  Management at South State is borderline worthless. When we had issues in the branch, we'd go to the manager expecting help or a solution to our issue. Everyone just loved to pretend that nothing could ever go wrong there. Your boss would basically just sweep everything under the rug, and so would their boss, and their boss, etc. When you have an issue that you need to talk with HR about, the regional HR person will essentially ignore your comments, depending on who your regional HR person is. I wouldn't recommend working here personally. It's an alright place to work if you have great coworkers, but that's about it. The only people that I'd recommend South State to are people that like doing the same exact thing every single day for long periods of time. There is absolutely no room for advancement here unless someone retires or quits, and good luck waiting for either of those things to happen

I have worked for several large banks in my career.  South State is my first regional bank.  The culture is so different from the larger banks.  We focus on customer satisfaction first.  Sales is a big part of the job, but not the only part.  That is the new reality of the banking industry.  With all the recent mergers and acquisitions, the dust is still settling and the company is growing.  There are growing pains here and there (IT, regulatory, staffing, employee career pathing) but that is to be expected when creating a new brand.  Each region of the bank is quite different, but in our region here managment strives to be fair. They encourage sales by showing my team how it benefits them and the customer, as opposed to shaming and brow-beating them as some of the bigger banks do.  Upper management will always tell you WHY something needs to be done, not "Because that's how it is".  The company is upfront and sincere.  It's interesting to see some of the other reviews on here and know the other sides to those stories.  Overall if you are looking for a growing regional bank to work for that will reward you with a good bonus program, care about you as a person, and offers decent benefits, this could be the bank for you.  No bank is perfect, but this one is the closest I have ever experienced.

The role of a Branch Manager at SouthState is to lead and develop a team to successfully achieve key performance indicators, including deposit growth, loan production, and overall sales performance. In addition to business development, we oversee daily branch operations, ensuring compliance standards are met and audits are completed accurately and on time.

Leadership support is strong and accessible and guidance is always available when needed. The culture is truly family-like, fostering collaboration, trust, and mutual respect. Sales expectations are clear but never forced; integrity always comes first, and solutions are only offered when they genuinely benefit the client. Because of this values-driven approach, I have consistently met my goals.

Like any management role, challenges exist, particularly during periods of high loan volume or when navigating HR matters…but these situations have always been manageable. Overall, leading a team is both rewarding and enjoyable. SouthState promotes a positive, supportive environment where employees celebrate one another and genuinely enjoy coming to work.

I have been here long enough to know that this was a decent bank to work at in the beginning. But as they acquired more banks- it was all about making dollars and achieve ratings in order to buy more and more banks. The HR is extremely embarrassing and the management is full of egos. They do not care about the employees and their handling of serious issues (especially employee matters) were swept under the rug. I have been privy to sensitive subjects that I would not recommend anyone to work here unless you are a white male with connections and no regard for doing the right thing. It is a shame actually because there are really good people who are more capable but overlooked because they don’t fit into their idea of what a person should look like or who is willing to do the right thing. Just don’t work here. You are better served somewhere else.

Worked here for almost a year and there is always something wrong with something I did for the month. They question if you go to the bathroom and they question if you need time off. Some of the team leads and managers and very condescending (based on my experience). But the pay is good and the opportunity to move out of customer care and into a different section of the bank is great! The position is remote but they threaten to make you come into the office if you have an issue with internet. The customers you have to deal with are very normal for customer care, you have good ones and you have bad ones. But when a customer asks to be escalated to a manager, there are a couple of the managers that don’t want to take the escalation and question if you did certain stuff and try to make you deal with the customer that is already requesting a manager. 

I was originally a CenterState Bank employee but we merged in June to become SouthState Bank in June 2021. The merger was horrible and we are still having technological issues that impact account holders daily. Back office departments throws all the work they are responsible for onto branch staff. I have worked here for 2 years and have been told that there is no room for me to advance any further. Health insurance benefits are not sufficient if you have chronic conditions so I have medical debt. I can’t afford to pay. Also if you are exposed to COVID on the job there is no sick pay so if you have no PTO you will not be compensated. I loved CenterState but SouthState is horrible.
